Welcome‌ We saw the first glimmer of summer last month when the temperature crept into the low sixties. We are probably thinking of our summer holidays which for me this year will be in the UK so for the next few months we will be advertising hotels, holiday resorts and attractions for all the family to enjoy. For the children this month Thomas the Tank will be at the SevernValley and the animals and walks make Rays Farm and Country Matters great days out. Look at the new feature on food written by Phil from the Deli in Bewdley and try some of his delious fare from his shop. Next month the new on-line magazine Your Local Trader.biz will be published and you can follow its progress throughout the year until it goes to print in twelve months time. We are hoping to include on-line shopping to help you purchase those hard to find items to assist you with DIY, motor repairs, gardening as well as listing a mulititude of tools and gadgets. Don’t forget you can advertise any items for sale by emailing or going on-line. I look forward to hearing readers thoughts on the magazine and you can contact me by emailing editorial@yourlocaltimes.co.uk or by phoning on 01299 402094.

Coming Attractions 2009 Heritage Run Sunday 7th June 2009

This year the Arden MG Club’s Heritage Run will take place on Sunday 7th June 2009. The Heritage Run is an extremely popular event attracting between 150 - 200 MG cars. The Run has finished somewhere different each year with the final destination being selected for its historical or transport related interest. Past Runs have taken us to the site of the MG factory in Abingdon, the Cotswolds Motor Museum, the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb and last year to the transport day at Hartlebury castle. This year we are combining history and transport with a visit to the Severn Valley Railway. The Severn Valley Railway is a full size standard gauge railway line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains between Kidderminster and Bridgenorth, a distance of 16 miles. The route follows closely the course of the River Severn for most of the way, the highlight being the crossing of the River Severn over the Victoria Bridge. Some of the views en route are only visible from the railway and quaint “olde world” stations punctuate the journey. Return tickets for the full train journey can be purchase with the entry form for £7 per person (half the price of a normal adult fare.) Tickets will only be valid for the day of the Run but they are the Rover tickets, ie. “hop on hop off”. The Run will be approximately 60 miles and the Tulip Rally Instruction will be provided in a special booklet. From start to finish the Run will meander through some of the little known highways and byways of Worcestershire, where there are some magnificent views of the countryside. 4

The Heritage Run is self-financing with all entrants paying a small fee. In the past a small profit has been made enabling the Arden MG Club to make donations to local charities such as the local Alzheimer’s group, Life Jackets for the Centenary Trust, a Special School in the area, Shakespeare Hospice and many other worthwhile causes. This year, it is hoped that a donation can once again be made to County Air Ambulance and other local charities. The cost of entry will be £12 per car, which includes car parking, a Rally Plaque and a Route Book with detailed instructions. Any train tickets ordered with the entry form will be sent out with the Rally Plaques. The Run is open to MG cars only and will be on a first come first served basis. For further details and entry forms, please write to Allen Smith, 53, School Road, Great Alne, Alcester, Warwickshire. B49 6HQ or telephone on 01789 488 280 or e-mail Jual@greatalne.plus.com.

The Land Rover Day on the 14th June is now an annual event. There will be many Land Rovers at stations along the line. A new event for the SVR on the 13th Sept is the Bus Rally. Bewdley Station will host a variety of historic buses.

Enjoying local wildlife Visitors are welcome to explore the woodland which surrounds Rays farm located in the heart of the beautiful South Shropshire countryside. The path meanders past the stream where occasionally otters are seen slipping into the deep water pools. For those wishing to linger, seats are provided where you may glimpse rabbits, kingfishers and woodpeckers, or watch the skies for buzzards on patrol. Wild deer, badgers, voles and mink inhabit these woods waiting for the evening to arrive and the visitors to return homeward before adventuring out in search of food. Relax and enjoy the wildlife as nature intended with its array of wild flowers and ferns all creating that perfect atmosphere. Experience the peace and beauty while unwinding and letting the time drift by. Visit the wild bird viewing hide and who knows what birds you will see. As we make our way back to the farm past the wild bird viewing hide we reflect how the landscape may have looked in previous generations. About 200 years ago the view across the lane and over the fields to the woodlands may have looked very different to that which you see today - the area was an industrial site. Download our walk through history map or collect your map from the farm during your visit. At the farm you will see many breeds of deer, including reindeer, pygmy goats, ponies and donkeys, red squirrels as well as ducks and geese, peafoul and ferrets and the childrens’ favourites the rabbits and guinea pigs. Rays Farm Country Matters is a farm for the animals and for people who wish to enjoy a close encounter with them. The paddocks hold the donkeys, ponies and horse whilst another holds Llamas and Alpacas. 6

Running around in another enclosure are the hens, Bantums, Ducks, Geese, Turkey foul and Pea foul. Enjoy the splendour of the many owls which the farm has on display with their grace and splendour. A lovely day out for those who wish to walk in the 8 acres of ancient woodland or those who want to see the wildlife and animals. The farm is owned and operated by Frank and Rose Cartwright and their daughter Julie since it was bought in 1982 as a small holding. Being such a haven with its wonderful woodland they opened it in 1990 and today attract thousands of visitors a year. Open every day from 10am till 5-30pm till the end of October Rays Farm Country Matters has a warm welcome for everyone. It caters for groups and school trips and has a coffee and gift shop where visitors can browse and take refreshment. Rays farm can be found on the B4363 near Billingsley on the Bridgnorth to Cleobury Road and is well sign posted. You can find all the details on the web site at www. raysfarm.com and plan your great day out.

Flower Power Like most cats, Morris is also partial to all kinds of scent. Therefore, Staff at the Park regularly introduces a variety of new smells to the Tiger Reserve giving Morris and his companions something else to investigate. This comes from a range of sources and in the past has included aftershave and ladies perfume, which creates the ultimate fascination. At this time of the year Staff can fortunately relax a little from their creative, if sometimes rather bizarre sensory duties, since the whiff of fresh flowers is all that is required to keep Morris interested.

There is nothing quite like the sight of a bright yellow daffodil to raise the spirits and for Morris the 16-year-old Bengal Tiger at West Midland Safari Park, it was no exception. Heralding the start of British Summer Time, Morris was seen strolling through the daffs during the glorious early summer sunshine in the four-mile self-drive safari in Bewdley, Worcestershire. And, despite being the largest member of the cat family with powerful paws concealing razor sharp claws, Morris still managed to tip toe through the delicate blooms without the slightest spoil. 8

Morris is one of seventeen Bengal Tigers at West Midland Safari Park - eleven of which are white - which represents, by far, the largest group of Bengal Tigers in the UK. The entire group can be seen daily and throughout the Easter Holidays, including Good Friday and Bank Holiday Monday. West Midland Safari & Leisure Park is open 7 days until Friday, 6th November 2009. Admission costs £11.50 for adults, £10.50 for children. A new family saver ticket has been introduced for 2009 costing £40.00 admitting two adults and two children. Admission costs also include a free return ticket. Amusement rides charged extra in all cases. Further information is available from the Park’s official website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114.

The Deli @ Bewdley… Brie One of the world’s greatest cheeses and the most famous from France, Brie is a soft-ripened cow’s milk cheese named after the historic French region where it originated. The elegant cheese is characterized by a smooth, edible, white downy rind, and a creamy rich, buttery interior. Very soft and savory, Brie practically oozes at the peak of ripeness, displaying earthy mushroom overtones and a slight hint of ammonia. Brie is known as “The King of Cheeses.” Because the “Brie” name is not protected, there are many varieties made around the world, particularly in North America, Germany and Great Britain. But as any connoisseur will tell you, French Brie is best, especially Brie de Meaux if you can get it. Made outside of Paris since the eighth century, this finest Brie presents an indescribable sweetness and a very soft combination of hazelnut and fruit aromas A Cheese Fit for Royalty According to legend, Charlemagne had his first taste of Brie in 1774 and instantly fell in love with it. Since then, the velvety cheese has been a favorite of noblemen throughout the world. It’s been said that during the French Revolution, Louis XVI’s last wish was for a final taste of Brie. And in 1815, the Congress of Vienna officially recognized Brie as a “royal cheese” when 30 European ambassadors cast votes in its favour. Making Brie Brie can be made from whole or skimmed milks, and milks that are raw or pasteurized. After the curd is obtained, the cheese is cast into molds, traditionally with a perforated ladle or shovel called a “pelle à brie.” The molds are filled with several thin layers of cheese and drained for approximately 18 hours. After the cheese is taken out of the molds, it is salted and inoculated with Penicillium candidum. This fungus creates a light crust on the surface and softens the cheese as it continues to move toward the center. So unlike many other cheeses, Brie actually ripens from the outside in. Brie is typically aged in cellars for at least four weeks.

18

Buying Tips When ripe, Brie will be perfectly soft and creamy throughout. As you shop, look for rounds that are plump, but no more than one inch thick. When thicker than that, the cheese may over-ripen at the edges before ripening in the center. Brie is best purchased when it feels resilient to the touch. And don’t be concerned if the rind shows some pale brown edges. Preparation Tips For maximum flavor, bring Brie to room temperature before serving or using in recipes. Simply let it rest on the counter for 30 to 60 minutes. The natural white rind of soft-ripened Brie is edible, and makes an elegant presentation when offering the cheese as an appetizer or dessert. However, when serving Brie with wine, it’s best to remove the rind, as its salty ammonia overtones will overpower the vintage. To do this, use a sharp knife to cut the rind away – this is easier done when the cheese is chilled. Another option is to soften the cheese at room temperature and then use a spoon to scoop the cheese from the rind. Serving Ideas Brie is a gastronomical luxury whether served at room temperature or smoothly melted into cooked recipes. Top a round with your favorite flavor of jam and bake in the oven until the cheese starts to ooze. Or, toss chunks of Brie (rind removed) with cooked pasta like rotini or cavatappi for a very sophisticated macaroni and cheese. And while an elegant option for any occasion, Brie is perhaps at its best when packed in a romantic picnic lunch for two. Spread it on crackers, croissants, or crusty breads and enjoy with fruits like green apples, strawberries, pears, and grapes. Brie also loves the company of a good wine – pair it with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Red Bordeaux or Champagne.

Local Times Why you need to Advertise… Advertising can be expensive whether you are looking for new staff, selling your services as a builder, window cleaner, take away restaurant, selling your car or even your home. Large publications like newspapers certainly have a large readership but how long does a newspaper remain in your home? Do they look exciting and colourful? No. Are they easy to read. No. Can you store them for reference easily. No. Publications of a specific type like computing, fishing, hobbies, wedding and bridal remain with us for a lot longer and may even get stored for reference. At Your Local Times we want you to advertise not because we are cheaper than other publications but because you are the person who wants to start a business, or may already have one. You can feel you are contributing to the local economy and the local community. You can use your advertisement in the magazine as your ‘literature’ for selling your services instead of having flyers printed and then distributed as ‘junk mail’. Is your business on the Internet? If you haven’t got a website then we can build you a site from your advertisement and put you on-line for very little cost. If you have a website then we can link it from your advert. Surfing the web rarely finds a small website unless you are a specialist business or the browser has an exact name. We can help you to advertise to a wider audience. Remember you need to increase your customer base and your revenue every year otherwise inflation will erode your standard of living. Look upon advertsing as a necesity not as luxury. Ask yourself this question; Why do the large supermarkets and companies advertise? We all use them and know they are there don’t we? Market share. They have to keep reminding us what they have on offer and keep us coming back. They must make sure we don’t use the competition. It’s the same for any small business - we need customers for the business to grow. So attract your potential customers by advertising in Your Local Times magazine and on-line.

The Zoo… Despite what the Fashion Police may say about the 70’s that decade holds many happy memories for me, but for the benefit of this article, it was the decade I purchased my first computer – a Sharp MZ80K which had a staggering 48k RAM !! Having been a bit of a techno geek most of my life, I suppose it was inevitable I’d end up in computers…. In 1999, whilst I was working for Siemens as a Controls Engineer, my wife, with many years behind her in the fitness industry, decided to leave her full-time office job to pursue a ten week intensive course to become a personal trainer. We needed to replace her income and after a very long walk one Summer night, we decided it was up to me and so, with only weekends free, I applied to Excalibur Computer Fairs. Initially, with a healthy interest in movies as well as computers, to give us the edge, we traded in original vcd movies, console peripherals and multi-region dvd players. After ten weeks, we realised that we had something special and in Jan 2000, handed in my notice, to a very confused employer, so I could focus on running our own business. Initially working from home, we stayed with the weekend computer fairs, but also changed our web site and began to build on the mail order side of things. It got to the point where we needed a unit, thus began phase 3. In 2002, we moved from Stourbridge to Far Forest near Bewdley. I made the decision to move the company also so we took up residence in a multi-tenanted office building in the town. It was during our time here that things began 30

to change. It seemed there was a demand for somebody in the area who knew about computers to help the ailing and technically lacking so with “wish we’d known about you before” echoing in my ears, having fixed a few pc related issues, decided it was time for the final phase – move to a high street shop to build customer awareness. I’d managed two computer stores previously – Software World (1984) and Mr Disk (1987), so in November 2003, we acquired the keys to our current trading address. Mail order is now gone, we focus mainly on pc and laptop repair, but have many other aces up our collective sleeve. As for the company name, that’s another story…
