Mediafabrik Mediafabrik

Diploma project/ Projet de Fin d’Études/ 2013 Media / Empowerment / Complementarity

Berlin, 2013, more than twenty years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Mediaspree, a gigantic urban project, start to lack relevance facing the nowadays context. Established at the German reunification, it aimed to create a media quarter on the desindustrialized ex-East Berlin riverbanks. The 2008 economic crisis strikes the top-down project Mediaspree and questions its sustainability.

The Eisfabrik, an old factory on the desindustrialized riverbanks

It is time to step into the breach and follow a new logic. The renovation of the Eisfabrik, an old ice factory located in the Mediaspree project area, will allow me to create a new architecture for the media. This media production centre and startup offices is grounded on citizen initiatives. It will amplify voices (especially with it on-demand radio and TV studios) and create a vivid dialogue in public space. The Mediafabrik will be a main actor into the social changes brought by participation and direct democracy values, in the media as well as in society in general.

The project proposes an alternative to the huge planned «sustainable quarter» which would intensively gentrify this old industrial area of Ivry, a suburb town neighbouring Paris. The construction of a pioneer multi-programmatic block nearby the river Seine aims to bring new urban qualities and reveal the riverside to the inhabitants. Conceived as resource for this upcoming city quarter, the cooperative building offers new opportunities to connect together inhabitants integrating housing, work offices and entertainment areas. The shared spaces can be found in different scales of the project: from the kitchen shared between two flats, the community rooms to the open pedestrian path through the block. They contribute to save space and money, as well as they enhance the community life, putting back the social activities in the city.

2012 Ecology / Share / Accessibility

A pioneer lot to revitalize the neighbourhood

2011 Local / Neighbourhood / Accessibility

In a popular quarter of Istanbul city centre, the project ground, a vacant lot, is already used by the local community as an open air playground and meeting point. The project aims to keep community activities especially the children playground and to bring safety to the area, respecting Turkish lifestyle. It is composed of two parts : a after-school centre for children and a handicraft centre for women. The after-school centre provides new activity rooms such as library, artistic activity room and ball games pitch. Both buildings are linked by open playgrounds and gathering areas in the middle, which allows women to keep control on children. New pedestrian short-cuts improve general accessibility of this dense and sloping neighbourhood. The buildings are set in tiers to take advantage of natural light and to follow the natural slope of the area.

2010 Local / Topography / Protection

The Youth Tree House is designed as a safe place for children in a poor neighbourhood of Istanbul. Hanging above the ground, using constructive steel pillars and beams, the wooden building is protected from the city and street level and only accessible from a footbridge. It also allows to create a free pedestrian path to access down hill to a huge garden, at the moment hard to reach. The building has two orientations: on the one hand, a quiet facade, facing the calm Aynali Cesme street, on which the sleeping rooms are opening, and on the other hand an open panorama facade, with huge terraces to enjoy the view and play. Both sides presents adapted light and sound qualities. Finally a central atrium and split level floors bring light in the building located on a long and tight lot, squeezed between two existing blind gables.

A narrow ground on the slope

Urban ecology

Écologie urbaine

2008 Landscape / Accessibility / Life quality

In Villeneuve-le-roi, suburb town near Paris, the industrial area, blocking the access to the river Seine, suffers currently from a decrease of its activities. The project includes tree complementary proposals, to ensure accessibility for everyone : use water as a starting point of the conversion of the industrial area, connect the city to the riverbanks through a huge urban park and mix subtly housing, industry and community facilities. Extensions of existing roads increase inhabitants mobility through the city, their neighbourhood and the neighbouring cities. Industries are relocated near high roads in order to limit nuisances. The link between housings and industries is insured by shops and community facilities, used by locals and workers.

The isolated industrial zone of Villeneuve le Roi

The park is making a link between the Villeneuve-le-roi inhabitants to the leisure areas at the riverside. It is composed of five islands with different activities : a lake park, a community leisure facilities island, an harbour, a liable to flooding swamp forest, an ornithological reserve and a urban agriculture island. The landscape park is directly connected from the suburb train station and it is included into a wider regional ecological promenade along the river. Then, the existing polluted channel is extended in order to treat its water through a decontaminating process. The project aims to increase the porosity of the city ground and to bring a bigger diversity of riverbanks. The goal of the project is to improve inhabitant life quality through a new urban ecology.

Central gap

Ouverture centrale

In Le Pré Saint Gervais, this housing project : a four-storey building and two row houses, emphasizes on shared spaces. To the one hand, the central crossing staircase provides large covered landings, which are free for the inhabitants to use. They are opening on the garden and the street and allows kitchen and bathrooms from the flats to have secondary lights and ventilations. To the other hand, collective facilities, such as bike parking area, common garden storage room or collective garden, bring high life quality to the inhabitants. Finally, in duplex and houses, the floors adjoin via the split levels floor and stairs. In this project, the shared spaces becomes places to live.

New housing lots in Parisian suburbs

Rehousing of the inhabitants, effects of global policies on local communities (102p/Master thesis) The research work for this thesis were realised in collaboration with the IFEA, the French Institute for Anatolian Studies in Istanbul, where I worked for two months. The urban policies of the ruling political party in Turkey, AKP include massive scale projects of urban renovation. One theme of my thesis was to understand the architectural and sociological effects that would bring one of this project in the particular gecekondu(“slum”) neighbourhood of Basibüyük. Through my research, a second main theme arose: what kind of political project is behind the urban renovation of established popular (and valuable) neighbourhood in Istanbul and more generally isn’t Basibüyük an example of the political will to make of Istanbul a global city.

Plan Basıbüyük, evolution of a gecekondu

1- Locate Maltepe in Istanbul, the Turkish megalopolis 2- The urbanisation of Maltepe and the history of Turkish migrants 3- Reading Basıbüyük through maps

TOKI, buildings built in one night & AKP urban policy 1- Basıbüyük, urban struggle & conservative mahalle 2- TOKI, growth engine for urban transformation projects 3- TOKI, fake solution to social housing problem

The new Basıbüyük as an example of the city to come 1- Housing: towards a normalisation of ways of living 2- Neighbourhood: from a DIY city map to a badly-designed one 3- City: the standardisation logics of global cities

Mediafabrik

Make a stand in public space and public sphere (98 pages/ Final thesis)

The Mediafabrik thesis was written in order to developp a consistent diploma project and to define a specific angle of research. The reuse of an old factory, the Eisfabrik, in Berlin is questioning public space along the Spree river. I developed my own position towards the existing public space and what could then be a nowadays space for participative media in Berlin. Media as creation, production and diffusion of data enrich the opportunity of debate in public space. A unique programme for the Mediafabrik is conceived to pratically create the participative media centre and meet the financial needs of this ambitious project.

Plan I/ Mediaspree & riverbanks

1. Berlin and the Mediaspree project 2. Existing experimentations: regeneration of public space 3. Challenges and resources of the Eisfabrik building

II/ Media & public space(s)

1. Evolution of media architecture following public space 2. From a media critic to programme outlines 3. Public space(s) and today media towards networking

III/ Tool-building & complementary programming

1. Complementary programming, strategy for independence 2. Cooperative economy, an umbrella for the project 3. A position to face Mediaspree, network

Petite Ceinture

When users define the place (17 pages/ Bachelor article) This article was written after a six months sociological field study in Paris. An old abandoned railway skirting around Paris, La Petite Ceinture, seems to be sleeping since thirty years. Observing three different parts of the railway and interviewing users, I discovered totally different realities. Blank spaces are margins where, what can not happen anywhere else, happen. Depending on geography of the space, activities may vary from precarious homes, promenade area to teenager playground.

Plan 1/ Two environments: different spatial qualities 2/ Contradiction between use and law 3/ An image of the Petite Ceinture influenced by the neighbourhood representations 4/ Distinct populations: different communications and visits 5/ Uses that come from spatial qualities and social representations 6/ La Petite Ceinture as a urban wasteland : an uncertain future

Together with Umschichten, we explored different dimensions of temporary architecture always observing how architecture can affect people’s life on a daily and urban basis and as well reveal their desires, fears or deeper thoughts. I worked on differents projects: the Ujazdowski castle through the eyes of it users, the Hotel Shabby Shabby festival and Opelation,This is not Detroit for Urbane Kunst Ruhr. Working with Umschichten included conceptual sensitive drawings, transformation of the office mobile containers and more in situ designing and building. Their special approach passionates me and developped my interest for materials, construction, urban action and temporary architecture as a way to stimulate urban spaces and people lives.

1936 With Panorama landscape architects, I participated in a preliminary urban and landscape study for the renewal of the cityhall area in Cachan, a suburb town of Paris. This work was an opportunity to consider the time scale in a project. Integrated in a longer and historical time frame, the cityhall gardens are made of changing, growing and living materials. The specific landscape architecture approach echoed numerous personal interests on project temporalities and fast evolving environments.

Internship at Eco2scop Stage à Eco2scop

In August 2009, I participated in the activities of a ecological building cooperative company, Eco2scop. We worked in the construction work of the extension of a house in the South of France. The particular approach of Eco2scop, considering the construction work in a wider perspective, taught me a lot about architecture and ecology. For them ecological materials, old building techniques, local environment as well as worker’s health, well-being and continuous learning, were all the aspects of a sustainable work and as a matter of fact the conditions of a sustainable building.

Personal drawings Dessins personnels

I attended different drawing and art courses during the last ten years. I gained technical skills as well as a curiosity for experimentations (linolprint, watercolours, charcoal, sculpture...). I am constantly drawing especially in the form of travel diaries.

Sketchnoting & Graphic Recording I am currently exploring those fields and learning a lot from them. Graphic recording means live-translating a conference or meeting content into a visual informations. The restitution aims to show clearer structure, hierarchy of informations, graphic example, big ideas put in relations,...

Travels Voyages

During the Erasmus year I spent in Turkey, I had the chance, besides getting education at the Istanbul Technical University, to meet a lot of different people and to travel. I particularly appreciated the journeys, I made in the Middle East. I discovered countries and cities, built through thousands of years but still craving for justice and equality in the future. Aleppo, Damascus, Cairo, Diyarbakir, Beirut were some of the cities I had the chance to visit. Each time, I got insights of the city life from locals, which were incredibly enriching for me to shape a view on this passionating and fast evolving region of the world.
