The Top 3 Most Common Structural Chimney Problems A chimney is a very simple piece of technology that has been used for hundreds of years. While these are not used as common as they once were domestically, they still adorn many homes and buildings across Scotland and remain crucial for industrial purposes. Chimney maintenance and repair has been at the heart of Balmore's roofing services for 30 years and in that time we have come across numerous problems that compromise the structural integrity of the chimney and lead to potential issues with function.

In the vast majority of jobs that we attend, the root cause generally comes down to one thing: moisture. A chimney, like a roof, is greatly exposed to the elements so, through constant battering from wind, rain, and snow, tends to succumb to moisture. Here are three of the most common cases of structural damage to chimneys that our Glasgow roofers and steeplejacks come across. 1. Brickwork Problems Regular inspections and maintenance are essential in ensuring water does not penetrate the chimney system. While masonry is extremely durable, when neglected, damaged mortar can cause the structure to lean, crumble or, in some cases, completely collapse. In most cases, the problem can be rectified by removing and replacing damaged mortar, but damage that is more serious may require the replacement of moisture-damaged bricks. 2. Cracked Chimney Crown
