Co-Lin welcomes new assistant coaches

The college welcomed four new assistant coaches this fall.

James Scales, III is serving as a volunteer assistant coach with the Wolfpack football team where he coaches the safeties.

Scales was a standout high school defensive back at Carolina Sports Academy. The Greensboro, North Carolina native was rated a three star prospect and ranked as the No. 49 corner in the nation by Rivals.com. He signed with the University of Oregon and suited up for the Ducks from 2011-2012. Scales transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University after his sophomore season and played cornerback for the Lions in 2013.

Brett Shufelt has returned to the Co-Lin coaching staff after previously serving seven seasons as the Wolfpack defensive coordinator. Shufelt is now coaching the linebackers.

In his final season as defensive coordinator in 2010, Shufelt led a unit that gave up a mere 279 yard per game in leading the Wolfpack to the state championship game.

He stepped down as coordinator at that time to focus on his work as an instructor in the college’s social science division.

As an instructor, Shufelt created the college’s first club for history majors, the Co-Lin Centurions. The club established a scholarship that is awarded to a student who is majoring in history. Shufelt has been awarded Instructor of the Year and PTK Faculty Scholar.

Shufelt received a bachelor’s degree in movement science from Western New Mexico State University, a master’s degree in educational administration, and a Ph. D. in educational leadership from Mississippi State University. He has one daughter, Mimi Jake Reed (’12) has been hired as assistant basketball coach for the Wolves. Reed replaces Justin Henley who was recently hired as the head boys’ basketball coach at Petal High School.

Reed suited up for the Wolves from 2010-12 and finished his career at William Carey University, where he recently received his bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, and recreation.

As a member of the Wolves, Reed was a MACJC All-Star game participant after averaging 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game as a sophomore. Reed appeared in all 21 contests as a freshman in Wesson and averaged 4.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. He was part of two very successful seasons for William

Carey while playing for Coach Steve Knight and the Crusaders.

William Carey qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri in both his junior and Reed Scales senior seasons, posting a combined record of 54-9 in Reed’s two seasons in Hattiesburg.

Reed was a highly decorated prep player when he played for Coach Dale Watts at Brookhaven Academy and was part of Shufelt Sims four straight state championship teams for the Cougars. He was selected as an MAIS All-Star and was named Mr. Basketball by The Daily Leader.

Ronald Sims (‘08) has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at Co-Lin. Sims comes to Co-Lin after serving one season as an assistant coach at East Central Community College. Sims knows his way around Wesson as he previously served as a student assistant at Co-Lin from 2007-2008. A Hazlehurst High alum, Sims graduated from Co-Lin with high honors and was inducted into the 2008 Co-Lin Hall of Fame.

Sims went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in business administration/business information systems and a master’s degree in kinesiology/sports administration from Mississippi State University. From 2009-2013 Sims served as either a student assistant or student manager on the Mississippi State baseball team where he gained notoriety in 2013 for carving a spirit stick that the Mississippi State baseball team used as a good luck talisman on their run to Omaha and the College World Series.

Stone Stadium receives new press box/concession stand H. L. Stone Stadium received an upgrade this football season with the completion of a new press box./concession stand.

The first floor of the 4,000 square foot building houses a new ticket booth, larger concession stand area, along with a new hospitality/meeting room. The second floor features home and visitor radio booths and coaches rooms, a room for the official clock operator, the public address announcer and other media, a filming room and the President’s viewing room.

“The new press box is a significant improvement and is another step in our long term plan to improve all of our campus facilities and grounds,”said Co-Lin President Dr. Ronnie Nettles.

Foundation Board elects new officers Robbie Barnes of Magee is the new president of the board of directors of the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation. He follows Tammy Torrey of Meadville. Other officers are Larry Greer of Madison, vice-president; Ralph Anderson of Gulfport, secretary; and Charles Hart of Wesson, treasurer.

Barnes is president and chief executive officer of PriorityOne Bank in Magee. He is a 1981 graduate of CoLin and The University of Southern Mississippi as well as the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. He is involved in numerous community and civic organizations, and is an active member of First Baptist Church of Magee. Barnes and his wife Melissa have two daughters and three grandchildren.

Greer is a native of Wesson and graduated from CoLin High School and the College in 1967. He received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Southern Mississippi and an MBA from Mississippi College. He retired from BellSouth after a 35-year career and also worked for the Mississippi Public Service Commission and served as an adjunct faculty member at Mississippi College. He is married to Carolyn Adcox Greer and they have two sons and four grandchildren.

Anderson, originally from Wesson, is a graduate of Co-Lin High School and the College in 1963, as well as Mississippi State University. Following his retirement from Bell South after 29 ½ years, today he volunteers with the Special Olympics and is an active member of Nugent United Methodist Church. The scholarship is designated to benefit students enrolled in a healthcare profession from Lincoln, Lawrence, Copiah or Franklin counties. Application for the scholarship may be made through the college’s financial aid office beginning in January 2015. An endowed scholarship is established by a gift of at least $10,000 and is designed to fund a scholarship each year afterwards. Mrs. Smith said Silver Cross Home Foundation was endowing the scholarship as part of an effort to give back to the community.

Foundation News Annual golf tournaments raise money for scholarships The Co-Lin Foundation’s annual Golf Classics in Natchez and Wesson each held successful years in raising funds for scholarships and program support at the college, pulling in almost $13,000 and more than $15,000 respectively. The Co-Lin Foundation provides over $200,000 in scholarships to over 200 Co-Lin students and faculty.

“The golf tournaments give Co-Lin supporters a fun day and help raise money to support scholarships and a variety of other needs of the college and students. I appreciate the golfers and especially the businesses who support the college through the tournaments,” David Campbell, executive director of the Foundation said. “This was the 21st year of the Wesson tournament and the 14th year for Natchez, and the tournaments have grown almost every year.” The 2015 Natchez tournament is scheduled for April 23 at Beau Pre, and the Wesson tournament is planned for June 18 at Wolf Hollow Golf Course on the Wesson campus.

Donations sought for Tarver memorial scholarship

A scholarship fund has been established within the CopiahLincoln Community College Foundation in memory of John D. Tarver of Wesson, who passed away at age 45 on June 16.

Tarver was the owner of Peak-Performance Heating and Air-Conditioning, which was the recipient of the Rheem Top Contractor award, and Houston Burris Service Training Certificate of Award. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Tarver is survived by his wife, Lisa and sons, Blake Tarver, a 2012 graduate of Co-Lin; Jacob Tarver, a 2014 graduate of Co-Lin; daughter, Lacie Tarver; brothers, Ken Tarver, Mark Tarver; and sisters, Kathy Tarver, Claudette Tarver, and Brenda Price.

“Even though John didn’t attend Co-Lin, he was so proud of how his boys had excelled at Co-Lin,” Lisa Tarver said. “Education and hard work were so important to him, and he’d be proud that this scholarship will help students receive an education.”

Former Wolfpack Athlete Turned Model July. Long says some friends and family have given him a bit of a hard time for appearing on the cover of a romance novel, but he takes it all in stride.

“This is just a fun thing to do right now, but if it turns into something bigger, I would love that,” Long said, citing a few friends who have turned to modeling full-time.

The book has already led to other modeling opportunities for Long and a contract with SEG talent agency of Nashville. He recently modeled in a photo shoot with Spirit Fitness in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and appeared in videos for the commercial and residential workout equipment company. Those photos will appear in print ads and television commercials promoting new equipment in the fall. Long is also gearing up for a potential shoot with ABC’s The Bachelor franchise.

While he hopes the modeling career continues to take off, Long isn’t relying on his looks to carry him just yet. He plans to return to Ole Miss in the fall, and has plans to apply to physical therapy

The Alumni Association will hold its awards luncheon in the Cafeteria in the Henley Building at 11 a.m. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased at the registration tables or the door. The class of 1964 will be presented with golden anniversary commemorative pins. Other reunion classes, outstanding alumni, Sports Hall of Fame inductees, Band and Colette honorees and outstanding instructors and staff will be recognized. A business meeting is planned at the end of the luncheon.

Tailgate Party A tailgate party will be held from 12-2 p.m. in the center of campus.

There will be food, music, and activities for children. The Sojourners will perform at 12:30 p.m. A pep rally featuring the Blue Wave Show Band, the Colettes, Flag Corps, and cheerleaders will be held at 1 p.m.

The band and Colette alumni chapter will hold a book signing for their

new history book under the tents during the tailgate party. All former band and Colette directors are invited to attend. Any class or group interested in setting up a tent should contact the alumni office at (601) 643-8498.

Reunions Several reunions are planned from 1-2:30 p.m. The high school class of ‘56/college class of ’58 will meet in the Henley cafeteria private dining room immediately following the luncheon. The high school class of ‘54 will meet the Mutton building café, and the college class of ’54 will meet in Oswalt Library at 1:00. The class of ’63 will meet in Smith Hall. The cheerleader alumni chapter, the first black football players alumni chapter, and the class of 1974 will all meet under the tents at the tailgate party. All classes that end in “4” are encouraged to meet under the tents. If you would like to reserve another location for your class or group, contact the alumni office.

here are they now?

One is the son of a former Co-Lin president, one the daughter of a current employee, and one is a former instructor. All three consider themselves to have “grown up on Co-Lin’s campus,” and the experience made a profound impact on their lives. Here’s what they’re up to today:

William “Bill” Thames (’89) of Meridian is a familiar name to many Co-Lin alumni, faculty and staff members. The son of former president Billy B. Thames and his wife, Anne, the younger Thames literally grew up on the Co-Lin campus along with his sisters, Rachel Thames Peeples (‘83) and Rebecca Thames Wilson (‘87). Dr. Thames was president at Co-Lin from 1968Thames then 1997.

After graduating from Co-Lin, Thames received a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Mississippi State University, Thames today and completed additional military training at the US Naval Test Pilot School and Air Command and Staff College, M.S. Military Arts and Sciences.

Today, Thames is an officer in the US Navy, specifically a naval aviator, and serves as the commanding officer of Training Squadron Seven flying the T-45C. His job is to train carrier pilots for the fleet. He has completed numerous tours in the U.S. and overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thames and his wife Susan are parents to two boys, Will, 17 and Chris, 13. He is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and Central United Methodist Church in Meridian.

While he has enjoyed his experiences across the globe, Thames is happy to be closer to his family in Mississippi. “The people, place and events made Co-Lin a wonderful place to grow up and I owe so much to the faculty, staff and people of Wesson,” Thames said.

After Co-Lin, Davis graduated from Troy University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism with emphasis in sports information in 2006 and from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a master’s degree in communication management in 2009.

Today she serves as senior marketing/PR coordinator at Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. She attends Crieve Hall Church of Christ in Nashville and enjoys volunteering for various community events and organizations including Habitat for Humanity, American Heart Association and the Music City Marathon.

She serves as Wellness Champion at Gaylord, promoting health and wellness to the property’s Davis then 3,500 employees.

She also enjoys attending leadership lectures and events at the nearby universities and playing volleyball for the city sports league.

Davis today “My time at Co-Lin not only prepared me academically for the next steps in my education but also allowed me to understand the importance of getting involved in school and in the community,” Davis said. “I still carry the invaluable lessons I learned in my professional and personal life, and Co-Lin will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Leah Davis (’04) of Nashville, Tenn., is the daughter of Natalie Davis, Co-Lin’s director of public information, and her husband Stephen, however she made a name for herself as a student at Co-Lin all on her own. Davis served as vice president of fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa and vice president of Sigma Kappa Delta, was a member of the Trailblazers, and

Billy Folkes of Sumrall worked at CoLin from 1963-1977 and says it was the best time of his life. Folkes taught mathematics courses for seven years, and then spent the next seven years in administration, serving as an assistant to Dr. Billy Thames, and focusing on continuing education, GED classes, and helped to begin the state’s first senior aides

Folkes received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Southern Mississippi, a master’s degree in mathematics from The University of Mississippi, and a specialist degree in education administration with an emphasis in higher education. After Co-Lin, he spent 13 years working at Southern Miss as director of continuing education and assistant dean of continuing education. He moved on to Mississippi College to lead their continuing education program for three years before returning to Southern Miss for a few years before Folkes then his retirement in 2007.

Today Folkes participates in a Senior Olympic basketball team with some friends in the Pine Belt area. They play at Folkes today least two days a week at Southern Miss and have competed all over the U.S., placing fourth in the nation in their over 70 age group in 2011. His team placed second in the nation in the over 75 age group in 2013. The Senior Olympic Games are hosted every two years and feature competitions in a variety of sports and age groups. Folkes says he played basketball in high school, and enjoyed playing in the faculty vs. students games coordinated

by Alton Ricks when he worked at Co-Lin. In addition to basketball, Folkes spends time serving on two boards, Primary Health Care, which runs 17 “sliding scale” clinics in southeast Mississippi, as well as the South Mississippi Regional Housing Board, which works with low-income tenants to secure housing. Folkes has been married to his wife, Sarah for more than 55 years, and they have two children, Madelyn Lofton of Clinton, and Wayne Folkes of Hattiesburg and five grandchildren.

“Working at Co-Lin was the best job I ever had,” Folkes said. “We really were one big family, and I still stay in touch with many of the friends I made during my time there.”

Alumni News Fuller retires from teaching Barbara Welch Fuller (‘67) of Mendenhall retired from teaching secondary English after 42 years in the classroom, teaching at Pinola High, Brookhaven High, and Simpson Academy. She continues to teach the Senior Project class at Simpson Academy. She has accumulated many awards during her teaching career, including being inducted into the Mississippi Star Teacher Hall of Fame for being selected a Star teacher by ten Star students.

Taylor Crane Berry (‘11) of Brookhaven, a graduate of the Associate Degree Nursing program and an ER nurse at Kings Daughters Medical Center, landed a role in the John Krasinksi film, “The Hollars,” which was filmed in Brookhaven and Jackson over the summer. The movie will be released in 2015 and features a star-studded cast including Krasinski, Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Charlie Day and Josh Groban.

Kelly ordained

John Kelly (’01) of Flowood was ordained into the ministry on July 27 at Meadville Baptist Church. Kelly serves as college pastor at Pine Lake Church in Brandon.

He is a former Mr. CoLin and is a member of Kelly the Co-Lin Hall of Fame.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in cross-cultural communication and religion from Mississippi College.

Maura Smith (’14) recently returned from a summer serving as a missionary in India.

She was selected and sent by the International Mission Board. Smith is currently pursuing a career in nursing at Co-Lin.

Band and Colette Book Now Available

The History of the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Band and Colettes is available for purchase for $50 and can be shipped for $60. Tracking the Classes Congratulations Jack Case (‘59) on being inducted into Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Co-Lin Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the Co-Lin Board of Trustees.

Dr. Roneasa Garner (‘07) on receiving her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Samford University: McWhorter School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, Alabama. Garner played on the Lady Wolves Basketball team from 2005-2007. She is now the newest pharmacist at Hudson Discount Drugs in Monticello.

Mary LaFrancis (‘10) on being nominated for rookie nurse of the year by the Mississippi Nurses Association. Previously, she was selected rookie nurse of the year at Baptist Hospital in Jackson where she works as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit. She also worked at the hospital’s adult oncology department.

Jedd Moak (‘13) on being selected as president of the Baptist Student Union leadership team for the state of Mississippi. Jedd also serves as BSU president at Mississippi State University.

Randall Bradberry, a former football coach at Co-Lin, on being one of the 15 inducted into the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Bradberry was inducted representing East Mississippi Community College where he played quarterback and served as head football coach.

Richard Williams, a former basketball coach at Co-Lin, on being inducted in to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He coached at Mississippi State University and led the team to win an SEC championship.

In MemoriamWilliam “Billy” Strait (‘48) passed away on May 3.

C. A. “Charlie” Martin (‘53) passed away on May 24. He served in France as a medic for the U. S. Army during World War II. Mickey Corban (‘54) passed away on July 24. He was a linebacker on the Co-Lin Wolves football team.

Tim Johnson (attended) passed away on July 9.

Bobby Joe Oswalt passed away on April 13. He was the former CoLin football coach. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and played football at The University of Mississippi. He served as an assistant coach at Co-Lin in 1955 and 1956 to the late Coach A.J. Mangum, who passed away last year. Oswalt coached at Holmes, Co-Lin and East Central community colleges and Louisiana College before becoming head football coach at Columbia High School.

He left coaching in 1970 to work full time at Camp Shelby as Range Control Officer, and retired in 1981 as Brigadier General.

Dr. Eddie Smith passed away on April 14. Dr. Smith was the Director of the Natchez Campus from 1973 to 1974. He assumed the duties of Dean of Instruction on the Wesson Campus on January 1, 1980. He remained in that position until he moved back to Decatur to become President of his alma mater, East Central Junior College, in 1985.

Lolita Kendall passed away April 1. She was former SOAR (SSS) Academic Counselor for Natchez Campus.

George Holcomb passed away on May 9. He worked in the maintenance department on the Wesson Campus.
