A House in Rome

01

Rome is a city both static and alive. The monuments and ruins of Rome are perceived as a constant, however they act as a form that is equally malleable and human in its expression. In the weathering of these symbols, the scale of the human hand that created it becomes apparent. This informed the facade system, as it appears unified when not engaged, yet when acted upon the human hand dictates the facade’s erosion. The everchanging state of a monument also led to the inclusion of an adaptive monument, or “nonument”, which changes based on the flooding of the bordering Tiber River. The act of flooding also transforms the amphitheater to an altar to the water, in reference to the natural mechanisms that work to reform these long-standing structures. Flooding of the Tiber causes a deposit of silt, which informed the use of varying opacities, and inspired the movement of water throughout the project as a phenomenological element. Through the collection of rain and flood water, the project reintroduces it to public spaces both within and outside of the project.

The idea for the following pavilion was originally synthesized through the creation of a chair. The design parameters that were established included using two materials and exploring joinery. I chose metal rod and wood, and the joinery method included braising and embedding. The original idea for the chair was to be wide and encompassing, and to allow for the chair to yield to its occupant. The design was then tailored to allow for easier construction, and moved to an easellike construction and a three-legged design. The angle of the spine allows the legs to take an angle allowing for more stability, which is partially lost when using three legs. The flexibility of the metal rod once sat in gives the occupant a feeling of being held, as the chair conforms to ones weight.

The sculptural nature of the chair back references the human form, and is ergonomically considerate. This action of yielding to the occupant then deserved exploration at a larger scale.

This pavilion houses hammocks is used to actively rest and interact with the surrounding prairie. The pavilion yields to its occupants, as the hammocks are part of a larger mechanism. This mechanism is engaged once the hammocks are sat in, mechanically altering the position of a glass mosaic. This mosaic is to be designed by a local artist, whose work features Florida’s natural landscape. The project also contains suspended walls to playfully engage the light passing through the mosaic. Its effects cause phenomenology to yield to the observer, synthesizing an interaction between occupant and their greater surroundings.

This project serves as an exploration of aperture, assembly, and procession. Rather than being selfcontained, the design was intented to act as part of a larger system, encouraging the procession to be partially inferred. This procession places an importance on threshold, giving these moments more weight. The thresholds are an extension of tectonic elements formed by the main aperture, which works to be both a densely formed datum and an expressed joint. This works to filter light and engages with the project, acting between rigorous dense delineation or softer diffusion.

The stair portion engages both assembly and procession, not only in being a tectonic element itself, yet by further exhibiting the project’s assembly to the observer as they are encouraged to continue their exploration.

The wetlands of Florida are vast, lively, and harsh as the project serves to take in much of the surrounding conditions while protecting the art it houses. In the rightmost section, specific art, which is to be separate from the main collection, is hung and exposed to the elements.

The content of this art is an abstraction of the surrounding environment, and the dialogue with its context works to abstract it further.

The act of observing nature feels passive. To negate this the lookout encourages a more active observing experience.

The lookout is composed of two main parts, the pod and the arm. These pieces work to provide two unique experiences.

The project began with the conception of the arm, which was created as a “sacred object” combining fabric and framework. The fabric and framework correspond with each other, changing as it moves away from the pod.

The framework is structurally informed by the rigidity introduced to the fabric. The fabric is laminated to increase rigidity, as the layers decrease down the length of the arm. The rigidity of the fabric alters the framework tectonically. This influences the composition created with the dense site context. Focus is brought to the small scale, and observing becomes intimate.

The monument is located in Owens River Valley in California.

The Valley’s water supply has been diverted to supply water to Los Angeles, depriving the valley of the water it once contained. The monument is meant to confront the visitor, with design language inspired by nuclear waste repositories, which exist nearby. The project is designed specifically to amplify and proffer the mishandling of this land by its previous occupants, and also exists as a piece of paper architecture, extending far beyond the deliverables presented.

20 This project encourages a deeper engagement with music through its program, which includes a live music venue, record store, recording studio, practice rooms, and a music library. The project is constructed to bleed phenomenological elements that externally engage and further music’s presence on both the busy pedestrian road to the south of the project, and the greater downtown region it inhabits. This notion is reinforced by the creation of a perforated block and through the nature of the building’s construction, interweaving interior and exterior spaces.

The city confronts its occupants with austere social and physical barriers. Within this project, this notion is challenged through symbolic reference to the historic castles within the region. Frosted glass works to dissolve the human form of both the pedestrian and the building’s occupants, and act as a gate to interpersonal connection. This connection is woven into the program, as the hotel houses spaces for dance and for breaking bread, serving as differing expressions of communion. Once this engagement is achieved the tower serves as a gate to the city, framing a view outwards. Austere walls are present, yet they are carved and punctured, abstractly weathered by the ever-present social conditions.
