Renewable energy sources related Studies – National level

1. Study for Integration of Wind Power Plants in Transmission System – technical constrains and balancing maximal wind penetration in National power system. Main objective is to study the quantity of wind generation that may be connected to analysed transmission grid at different periods in the future, including the identification of necessary transmission network reinforcements for their facilitation. In addition, this study is expected to propose technical requirements/standards for connection of wind power generation facilities to the transmission network, which includes analysis of and proposed modifications to the existing technical secondary legislation concerning transmission network operations (Transmission Grid Code).

Power System and Electricity Market Studies and Analyses 1

2. Study for estimation of total capacity and costs for integration of RES in National power system – overview of technical and financial implications of RES integration in power system. Focus should be put on wind power plants (WPP) and photovoltaic power plants (PVPP) due to uncertainties in forecasts and intermittent production. Integration of RES should be studied in different aspects:

3. Identification of all types of RES (locations, installed capacities) that could be implemented in country, with emphasis of WPP and PVPP.

4. Forecasts on RES production unbalances on yearly, seasonal, daily and hourly level.

5. Estimation of RES implications on electricity demand.

6. Analyses of existing feed-in tariff, feed-in premium tariff and forecasts of future schemes for RES support.

7. Analyses of technical constraint in transmission system because of RES integration.

8. Forecast of system services for different level of RES integration.

9. Estimation of total costs for integration of RES (WPP and PVPP).

Power System and Market Analyses on National Level

1. Studies for market coupling: running different scenarios for market coupling (full, partial, and no market coupling) as well as checking specific regimes in Load Flow to analyse effects on the transmission grid.

2. Flexibility studies for investment in generation/production/storage units: running iterative market calculations to find the optimal investment in the generation portfolio to increase the flexibility of the power system based on social-economic welfare increase on a national or regional level. We can include all sorts of devices ranging from conventional generators/investments to smart technologies.

3. Screening of the flexibility needs of a National Power System or wider region: running advanced algorithms to estimate flexibility needs of a power system and the system inertia on operational and planning horizons. We are checking:

• Penetration of RES.

• Probability for RES congestion.

• System inertia.

4. Estimation of aFRR and mFRR: estimating the aFRR and mFRR on a national level, an LFC block, or a region based on deterministic methodology or stochastic static methodology using historical or synthetically generated (we can use synthetically generated production curves for PV and wind power plants, production curves, as well as a randomly generated forced outage patterns of the thermal generators and transposing the data to probability density function (PDF), so we can run a convolution analysis of the generated PDFs.

Power System and Electricity Market Studies and Analyses 2

Transmission system related Studies

1. Transmission expansion studies:

• running market analyses with market simulation software for different time horizons to find the best solution from a predetermined set of potential solutions,

• Identification of internal bottlenecks in national grid.

• Sensitivity analyses of grid performance on different scenarios

• checking specific regimes with Load Flow Software, and

• checking the solutions from an economic point of view with a cost-benefit analysis.

• Performance of candidate national projects in different scenarios.

2. Strategy for reconstruction/ revitalization of National Transmission System TSOs worldwide are facing significant challenges in carrying out their tasks related to the development of the network and facing the gradual increase in the need to renew aging equipment to maintain a high level of security of supply. The renewal of the network equipment will be required in the next decades. Significant investments must be made to maintain system performance and cost under control. According to some analyses overhead lines reconductoring and replacement will occupy around 77% of expenses of TSO’s in next 15 years. TSOs have no common approach and methodology today to assess how and when to renew the existing system components. These types of Studies will support decision to renew existing assets of the network and create dataset for input to the Maintenance and Refurbishment as Asset Management Plan of TSOs in coming years.

3. Dynamic modeling of National Power system – creating and verify National Dynamic Simulation Model. All the machines connected to the high voltage network and represented in Load flow model are represented individually with appropriate data set, which consists of models of generators, excitation systems, power system stabilizers (if any) and turbines and governors.

• Based on received data, Model Integrator constructed initial dynamic model. For all new generator units and units for whom data is not available for some reason, typical parameters, or production unit’s construction data (if available) are used.

• Each generation unit which is in operation in at least one regime was tested in isolated operation on standard excitation system test and turbine-governor controller test. In case when response to these tests didn’t comply with standard requirements, appropriate parameters have been adjusted.

• Special attention is paid on modeling static and dynamic parameters of RES and BESS plant equipment, such as modules, inverters, transformers, cables, BESS

• Check system response to zero disturbance, i.e., simulation without any disturbance in system, for period of monitoring 10 seconds. System response shows “flat line” which means that all values are within limits and model showed numerical stability.

• Check transient stability to selected disturbances in system. The model was tested on typical disturbance (fault on some important branch in system followed by outage of

Power System and Electricity Market Studies and Analyses 3

faulted branch). As result from such simulation, system reached new state equilibrium without any tripping of generator or any other element in system.

• Power System restoration with external Voltage soured (top-down)

• System restoration requirements

• Operation procedure for restoration

5. Study for Power Losses in National Power System

Battery Energy Storage Services

Electricity grids across the world are evolving to accommodate the rapid rise of renewable and decentralised energy generation technologies. Maintaining moment-to-moment power stability across these networks is a growing challenge for transmission and distribution network operators.

Harnessing intermittent sources of electricity at a local level and transforming their value into dispatchable network resources is now a technically realistic prospect in the advent of maturing Battery Energy Storage Services technologies. Greater energy security and the availability of requisite capacity during daily peak demand periods can be achieved through the flexibility that Battery Energy Storage Services technologies are well suited to enable, absorbing power and energy when nature is ready and releasing it when consumers are ready.

COLENCO can assist electricity generators, network utilities and energy suppliers enhance the flexibility and energy security of their systems and increase the value of their electricity operations by helping them utilise the maturing range of Battery Energy Storage Services technologies now available.

• Investment analyses in BESS: running calculations to investigate if the investment in batteries to flatten the production profile of PV is economically justified.

• Grid balancing and support systems including Virtual Power Plants

• PV and wind generator co-located systems for firming capacity and resolving settlement imbalance

• Continuity of power from renewable generators in weak grid, micro-grid and stand-alone situations

Power System and Electricity Market Studies and Analyses 4

• Transient (dynamic) analyses will provide a detailed understanding on the effects of significant disturbances that may occur during operation of the planned PV plant incl. BESS. The influence of such disturbances shall be simulated in respect to the PV power plant and the related grid integration point (PoC).

Smart grid related Studies

1. Automated Demand Response - The strategic objective of the study is to define basic framework and guidelines for potential development of future programs for integration of demand response in National Transmission System in terms of achieving a greater security of supply in the system, as well as greater economic efficiency and increased sustainability. Processes, aimed to make demand flexible, require considering the multifaceted features of the problem.

2. Effects of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV) on the National Transmission and Distribution Grid- This type of studies investigates effects of plug-in electric vehicles on the transmission electricity grid. More specifically, it will suggest approaches for:

• Offering backup for renewable power sources including wind and solar power,
