I’m a massive fan of Elf and especially Buddyit’s a great role to release my inner child!
14 DEC5 JAN
Astar-studded cast is set to take to the stage for ELF - THE MUSICAL - the festive blockbuster coming to Charter Hall on a 36-show run from 14 December 2024.
Buddy the Elf, the eccentric human raised by Santa’s elves, will be performed by Essex’s own Jake Quickenden. The actor, singer and X-Factor star is best known for winning the 2018 Dancing on Ice, becoming runner-up in 2014’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here and more recently taking part in Celebrity MasterChef.
Originally from Scunthorpe, Jake now lives close to Colchester in Boxted, Essex. His TV appearances include a role in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and he has performed in numerous stage productions such as Hair The Musical, Footloose and The Full Monty.
Jake said: “I’m a massive fan of Elf and especially Buddy - it’s a great role to release my inner child! This will be an incredible show and something the whole audience will remember as a special time.”
Jovie, the unenthusiastic department store worker who captures Buddy’s heart, will be played by Ipswich’s very own Jade Mayjean. The singer/ songwriter found fame in her early 20s on BBC’s The Voice where she secured Kylie Minogue as her mentor and performed to millions of national TV viewers week after week. Jade went on to release her album 20Sixty.
Jade said: “Ever since I can remember I have been singing and I love the stage. I’m so looking forward to Colchester’s production of Elf and just cannot wait to get started.”
Distinguished actor of TV and stage, Gary Turner, will take
the role of Walter Hobbs, the cynical business executive who is revealed as Buddy’s biological father. Gary is best known for his role as the good-looking chef, Carlos Diaz in ITV’s Emmerdale, which he played from 2000 to 2004. The 56 year old has since starred in a variety of TV, film and stage roles including Sy Spector in Bodyguard the Musical and Errol Flynn in A Question of Errol Flynn.
Jake and Jade’s impressive performances have already wowed the likes of Simon Cowell, Kylie Minogue and Tom Jones, so we’re sure audiences from across the region are going to be bowled over by the singing, dancing and acting of all three performers in this fabulous, festive production that’s not to be missed!
Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International, ELF-THE MUSICAL is based on the book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin; with music by Matthew Sklar and song lyrics by Chad Beguelin. The show is based on the New Line Cinema film written by David Berenbaum which starred Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and James Caan as Elf, Jovie and Walter.
It tells the hilarious tale of Buddy, who, as a baby, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and grows up in the North Pole. Raised as an elf and never quite fitting in, when Santa tells him the truth of his birth father, Buddy sets out to New York for a family reunion to remember.
ELF-THE MUSICAL runs until 5 January 2025 with matinees and evening performances.
The people have spoken! The Pub Landlord is back for another round of Guv Island in 2025 - with fresh brew material!
In this exclusive Q&A, we spent some time in the company of British comedian, actor and writer, Al Murray to get to know him a little better and find out more about his alter ego, the Pub Landlord.
Al, you’ve described the Pub Landlord as a “know-all know-nothing blowhard who knows the answer to every question even though he hasn’t been asked any of them” - who or what inspired his creation?
I used to listen to lots of phone ins! When I first came up with the character the aim was to be as daft as possible and make sure it was funny. Somehow the Pub Landlord came out in the wash. When was the pub landlord’s first performance and has he changed over the years?
The first stuff I did was in Edinburgh at the Fringe, and the character was a stop gap to fill a hole in a show. When he started he was reticent about being on stage. That’s the thing that has changed the most. He’s now become aware of his “fame”, he sees himself as a voice of the people ‘common sense dispenser’ who has come to help.
How would you describe the Pub Landlord in three words?
Tall, bald, right.
What topics will the landlord tackle in this latest show?
The state of the nation, what to do about Artificial Intelligence and which jobs are safe, young people, being offended, who really should be sent to Rwanda, the perils and benefits of Tik Tok, why no one is talking about Brexit,
Al, what do you hope audiences will take away from the show?
A night of laughs, wisdom, and if you’re sat at the front, maybe soggy trousers. Do audiences confuse Al Murray with his comedy creation?
I hope not! I think The Pub Landlord is kind of obvious enough .... but part of the fun is that in the end you never can control what people make of you. If someone does think he’s real then that strikes me as pretty funny and another joke in with all the others. Sometimes offstage it can take people by surprise when I speak and don’t sound like him, but it’s not something I lose any sleep over.
Does your real-life fascination with military history inform the show?
Well there’s a bit of the show about the NHS which leans into that somewhat. The Pub Landlord is one of those people whose eternal regret is that he missed the Second World War.
As a history lover, have you visited Colchester before?
I’ve not been to Colchester for history stuff, though the last time I stayed there was in a hotel which was 2nd Special Air Service Brigade’s HQ at the end of the war. That’s the kind of thing I notice and point out excitedly to my family.
Who are your dream dinner party guests?
Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, Eva Green (though I wouldn’t want Monty talking to her to be honest), John Bonham, Joan of Arc (they can chat) and Steve Martin.
The Gov Island tour takes you across the UK. When you’re on the road – what tracks make your top playlist?
There’s a David Bowie live album from the nineties called Bowie at the Beeb which has been an evergreen all time car touring favourite. It’s fantastic. Finally, we have to ask, what’s your favourite war film?
A Bridge Too Far. If it’s on, I’ll watch it.
Check out a tempting handful of the many comedy stars coming to Charter Hall.

TV’s most interesting globetrotter reveals why he’s in a class of his own
With his latest tour, ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ Simon hopes to encourage people to take a few more risks and find value in nature, wherever it may be.
27 November 2024
Author and TV presenter, Simon Reeve, is one of the world’s most adventurous travellers. His unique brand of documentary filmmaking combines travel and adventure with current affairs, history, wildlife, culture and conservation.
With his latest tour, To the Ends of the Earth, Simon hopes to encourage people to take a few more risks and find value in nature, wherever it may be.
Simon’s experiences of growing up in inner city London, escaping from a mental health crisis to flee to Scotland and finding his feet – quite literally –see him well placed to suggest ways others can discover more personal wild moments.
Simon said. “I want to remind audiences there’s a really beautiful, wild world out there for us to love and experience. My theme for the tour is ‘wild places exist and we need to find them’. There’s not much in life that I am sure about, but I am sure about this. The value of getting into nature is very simple, whether it’s a local park, a remote national park, or a far-flung
“I’ve travelled through so many completely different environments and am looking forward to sharing some of that.... What it’s like to be in the desert, in the mountains, the coldest places on the planet, and all the other extreme locations I’ve visited.
“Noticing nature around you is a bloody tonic. It’s a lot cheaper than therapy or other exercise, but super-valuable for us as individuals and collectively. So, if you aren’t great at taking chances or eating in restaurants that don’t have photos of the food outside, come along and let’s see if I can persuade you to have a few more adventures.
“In terms of learning about myself and the world around us, almost everywhere I’ve visited has taught me something. A big lesson for me has been staying with people who take what they need from Mother Nature, not what they want. I’ll talk about some of those remote communities on my tour – I won’t romanticise their lives, and often there is a comparative poverty, but it’s worth being reminded of those ways of living.”
“My journeys are about people and that’s what viewers remember and talk to me about. I love that. Travel can never be boring when you’re connecting with people.”

Celebrating the music and life of Whitney Houston
After landmark performances at the Royal Albert Hall and The London Palladium, Whitney –Queen of the Night comes to Charter Hall for the the show’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
We asked, Adenike Adewale, the star of the show, to tell us more.
HOW DID YOUR SINGING CAREER TAKE OFF?
I started singing in choirs and at school at a young age but I was shy and happy to stay in the background. Singing and writing songs was my joy and remained a huge hobby. Over time I ended up singing at events and later got the confidence to apply for The Voice. It was a massive experience for me and I realised it was what I really wanted to do.
WHAT MAKES WHITNEY SUCH A SPECIAL ARTIST FOR YOU?
That vocal passion she had, the gospel background, it spoke to me. I aspired to have that range and that freedom of vocal ability – it was so powerful.
WHY DOES WHITNEY’S MUSIC STILL HAVE SUCH INFLUENCE?
You still see teenagers go crazy over I Wanna Dance With Somebody, just as their mums and grandmothers have done. Whitney was true to her personality and was able to portray that with music.
HOW DO YOU RE-CREATE WHITNEY’S IMMACULATE VOICE?
It takes a lot of practice, rehearsals and spending time listening to Whitney’s music. I work hard to keep my voice fit so that I can enjoy every performance and make sure everybody has a good time.
WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT…
The show goes through Whitney’s life and achievements. The band plays a huge role with guitar, bass, saxophone, percussion, drummer and piano, two backing dancers and singers, and a featured vocalist. We get on so well and it’s great to be able to take audiences on the journey – it’s magical.
