THE DRIFTERS We all love The Drifters - the legendary band is the longest running singing group in pop history still performing live.

This time Westlife promises to get closer to their fans than ever before, as they perform all their greatest hits ‘Swear It Again’, ‘Flying Without Wings’ and ‘World of our Own’ as well as, fresh pop anthems from their new album ‘Wild Dreams’.

“We are incredibly excited to announce news of The Wild Dreams Tour. It feels like things are finally starting to return to normal and we can’t wait to enjoy that feeling with our amazing fans,” said the band. “After the last 18 months, this tour means more to us than any that we’ve ever done before. Simply Red’s 1991 classic “Stars” was the best-selling album for two years running in Britain and Europe and every Simply Red studio album has been a UK top ten.

“We’re delighted to working with the team at Castle Park again next year, “said Liz Doogan-Hobbs MBE, CEO of Grandslam Live Ltd. “We love the venue and fans of Simply Red are in for an absolute treat.”

Mick Hucknall has been Simply Red’s songwriter and bandleader since 1985.

His remarkable voice with its raw honey and whiskey tone, has a sinuous flow that can shift from tender sensuality to full on, roaring power in a heartbeat.

“I always want to push my voice a little harder, challenge it a little bit, give myself something to really sing to,” said Mick. “It’s deepened a little bit, but I’ve kept the high end, so I can still hit those notes. Singing is pure pleasure to me.”

Listen out too for saxophonist and original band member, Ian Kirkham, who also joins the line-up. His warm and expansive saxophone playing is a much loved feature of the band’s soulful sound.

ANNOUNCING… GABRIELLE Gabrielle, one of the most iconic female British artists from the past 30 years, will be Simply Red’s special guest.

Gabrielle shot to the top of the charts with her debut hit single ‘Dreams’, which spent three weeks at number 1 in the summer of 1993. Her catalogue of hits includes her second hit single, ‘Rise’ and a further eight top 10 hits, most notably ‘Out Of Reach’ (which featured in ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’), ‘If You Ever’ (with East 17) and ‘Give Me A Little More Time’.

Gabrielle said: “I am really looking forward to sharing the stage with the legends that are Simply Red. Being back in the open air singing in the sun is something we’ve all so looked forward to and, after such a difficult couple of years for everyone, it will be amazing to see people able to come together again through the power of music.”

M - It’s a bit obscure! It’s called ‘Pass Me By’ by Peggy Lee. I was probably two and a half!

THE FIRST SINGLE YOU BOUGHT A - Embarrassed to say but it was ‘The Smurf song’ by Fr Abrams and The Smurfs! Yes, I was not a cool kid.

M - The theme tune to The Poseidon Adventure – ‘The Morning After’ by Maureen McGovern. I would’ve been nine!

YOUR MUSICAL HEROES A - Has to be Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Pavarotti, those are top of the list but it could go on and on.

M - The usual suspects. I love the great American songbook interpreters – Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald. I love Neil Diamond and Tom Jones. There’s far too many to mention.

FAVOURITE WEST END SHOW/S A - Has to be Les Miserables, nothing more to say.

M - How can you ask me to choose between Les Mis, Hairspray and Sweeney Todd? It’s like picking a favourite child.

YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PERFORM A - Too hard to answer that question. I love all the songs I sing.

M - I love performing ‘Stars’ from Les Mis, but nothing beats the kick of performing a song you’ve written yourself and seeing the audience singing along.

YOUR FAVOURITE SUNDAY MORNING SOUNDTRACK A - Something fun and happy because on a Sunday I still get that feeling of having to go to school the next day, so I listen to anything that will relax me and take away that feeling.

M - It opens with Joni Mitchell ‘Chelsea Morning’ and then it would be followed by her albums ‘For the Rose’ and ‘Court and Spark’.

BEST SONG TO DANCE TO A - Ooh! My moves are limited but I did enjoy dancing to the Blues Brothers’ medley on the last tour.

The Romans are returning to Colchester for a new season of open-air theatre. Why not bring along your blankets, chairs and picnics and settle in for some first-class entertainment?

astle Park Theatre’s ‘Roman Season’ in the Bowls Green Lower Castle Park, gets underway with a hilarious sideways look at the classic Hollywood sword and sandals epic, ‘Ben-Hur’ from 3-14 May. Written by Patrick Barlow, the man behind the long running West End hit ‘The 39 Steps’, it features romance, betrayal, sea battles and that famous chariot race.

‘The Boadicea of Britannia Street’ from 17 - 28 May is a touching and funny look at friendship from Ade Morris. It follows

a women writers’ group attempting to stage a play about the Queen of the Iceni who burnt Colchester to the ground.

From 29 May to 2 June, Castle Park’s very own family show, ‘King Coel’s Curtains’ will entertain audiences of all ages in a quest to cheer up the grumpy king.
