Latest Artwork Colchester Academy As a welcome back project, Ms Coburn invited all of our students to fold a paper crane with a wish or hope for the future contained within it. This comes from an old Japanese tradition where people fold 1,000 cranes to make their wishes and hopes come true. We didn’t quite make 1,000 but they do make such a positive splash of colour in our windows. Any student who made one will see their crane hanging up and hopefully remember the Newsletter positive wish for the future contained within it. Ms Coburn Team Leader Art & Technology

Dear Parents and Carers It seems this term has gone so quickly with many things to celebrate and be thankful for across the Academy. Year 7 have settled in brilliantly, the transition to secondary education has gone so smoothly for them and it is lovely to see so many of them fully involved in lessons and extra-curricular activities. Year 11 have, again, outdone themselves with their attitude to their mock exams, focus on applying for post-16 places and a real determination to succeed. Many of them are telling us that they don’t want to leave when the time comes, but that is several months away and by then they will be more than ready to take their next exciting steps into their futures. Please enjoy the articles within this issue, showcasing a small example of the excellent opportunities available to our students. Please have a restful and safe break over the Christmas period and thank you again for the support, kind messages and thank you’s you regularly send to staff – it really does make a difference. Have a safe and restful Christmas break – see you all in 2022. Kind regards

Meet the Staff

In this age of unrelenting information, 24-hour news, social media, and COVID-based restrictions on our lives, it’s no surprise that many of us have recently, at times, felt overwhelmed. I can only imagine how it must feel as a young person, trying to forge a path in the world. As a 30+ year old trainee Design Technology teacher I am forging a new path for myself, having worked in a completely different field for over 10 years. However, I’ve been welcomed by Colchester Academy’s students with open arms, and I’m excited to be taking our journeys together. By now, my students realise that I’ll do my utmost to help them navigate the landscape and ensure they can be the best they can be. And by “best”, I’m not referring exclusively to exam results. I chose to work with Colchester Academy because they understand that success isn’t measured solely on this; they value kindness, compassion, and empathy. I’m not prepared to accept that any student can’t “make it”. I’m enjoying helping students identify their strengths, to unlock their potential. In teaching Design Technology, I have been afforded the opportunity to teach students skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. My educational background is in Art & Design, but with Design Technology encompassing cooking, nutrition, catering, metals, plastics, woods, papers, and boards, I have almost as much to learn as my students! There is lots to take in, but as Albert Einstein once remarked: “You never fail until you stop trying.” In between teaching and looking after my very demanding 5 year old daughter, you’ll often find me plotting my family tree, knitting, painting and creating in the kitchen, with varying levels of success! Miss Taylor Design Technology Teacher

Student Speaking Competition On Thursday 12 November, 3 students from Colchester Academy represented our school in an ESU Speaking competition, where they were arguing for longer paternity leave. They were arguing against Ipswich School. These students were Aistis and Veronica from Year 9 and Louie from Year 10. They were absolutely brilliant, despite a few difficulties. They spoke for over 10 minutes regarding their argument and made some excellent points to support themselves. If they win their side of the debate, they will progress to Round 2 where they will compete again, but I will keep you all informed on the results! Please congratulate these students for being excellent and the other 18 students who were involved in the preparation of the speech. Miss Moore English Teacher

Bake Sale The Year 10 students in CoPE have been focusing on working with others this half term. The students have done lots of tasks and had lots of discussions about working as a team and what good team work looks like. One of the challenges asked of the students was to ‘work with others to help raise money for a good cause’. The students spent the last 6 weeks planning, organising and researching how they were going to run the event and which charity to raise money for. Sarah, Hannah and Alfie did this with minimal input from the teacher and they came up with all the ideas themselves. The Bake Sale was a huge success and we must also say thank you to some Year 7 and Year 11 students who baked some treats for the Bake Sale. The 3 students raised over £114 for BBC Children in Need. Well done. Miss Fosker Teacher of COPE

Any type of performance involves an element of risk, and our performers took those risks and were rewarded with rapturous applause from an excellent audience. Our judges had a very difficult time picking an eventual winner, finally choosing Dylan Mane and Evan Bament (both in Year 9) for their magic trick.
