It also elevates the résumé, expanding employment opportunities and distinguishing graduate school applications. Our faculty of leading scholars, scientists, and artists is powerfully motivated to collaborate with students. Partnerships with world-class research and cultural institutions throughout Maine and around the world dramatically expand the offerings.
A FACULTY OF ACTIVE, ACCESSIBLE SCHOLARS AND SCIENTISTS and generous stipends allow students to pursue research all four years.
AN ANNUAL LIBERAL ARTS SYMPOSIUM AND ANNUAL SUMMER RESEARCH RETREAT promote and celebrate the research and creative work of students from across the disciplines; 745 students presented or performed as part of the most recent symposium.
THE COLBY ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM IN THE SCIENCES helps students from diverse backgrounds develop leadership skills in the sciences; participants spend six weeks on campus prior to the start of their first year.
COLBY HUMANITIES LAB courses promote experiential learning—documenting Maine’s musical soundscapes, tracing the history of Italian food culture, and partnering with a local school to re-imagine German folktales.
INTERDISCIPLINARY COMPUTATION majors promote crossdisciplinary thinking and research by combining studies of computer science and any other discipline.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS select a topic of interest (among dozens of options that span the curriculum) and begin working with a professor during the fall of their first year.
As an undergrad, Adam took advantage of Colby’s close partnership with The Jackson Laboratory and landed an opportunity to research mouse models for human cancer. After graduating and spending another summer at Jackson Labs, Adam is pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical informatics at Stanford. “Take a liberal arts approach to life’s opportunities and challenges. Enthusiasm to embrace every learning opportunity I can is my most important takeaway from my Colby education.” 3

YOUR ENDLESS OPPORTUNITY. Whether learning the nuances of international finance, mastering a foreign language, or pursuing biological field research, approximately two-thirds of Colby students expand their understanding of diverse geographies, cultures, economies, and political systems by studying off campus—choosing among more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries. All students benefit from a curriculum anchored in global perspectives (half of all majors have an international component) and a campus dialogue enriched by students from more than 80 nations.
Whatever their course of study, students graduate with the experience, flexibility, and cultural fluency needed to thrive in the emerging global marketplace.
Colby’s highly flexible GLOBAL STUDIES MAJOR crosses four disciplines— government, history, economics, and anthropology—and includes extensive language study. COLBY ART MAJORS traveled to Washington, D.C., on an annual networking and professional experience trip; they met with directors, curators, and other staff of museums, galleries, collective art spaces, and more.

The recipient of scholarships that funded study in Athens, Greece, and Padova, Italy, as a Colby undergrad, Maggie spent the summer following her Colby graduation working in a French bakery and now attends the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. She plans a career in clinical work. “It’s important to step outside your comfort zone. You won’t know the benefits of a little adventure until you’re able to take that first step.”
