Newsletter 2025 SUMMER

Introduction

As we come to the end of the school year it is a fitting time to stop and reflect on the year experienced by all in Coláiste Muire

This year has been extremely busy both inside and outside the classroom I am most grateful to all students and staff who have made this a most memorable and special one in so many ways

It has been a year of highlights including many victories in many areas of school life We are very pleasedto launch our new Bí Cineálta policy imbedding our values of respect and kindness. Someof the activities are reflected here in the accounts and photographs These are a mere glimpse into some of the many happenings throughout the year

It is very heartening to read reflections on school life from Sarah (a first year) and Lucy (a sixth year). These reflections mirror whatColáiste means for all of us. It is fantastic also to read Kate’s experience in Transition Year.

I am extremely privileged to be Principal of Coláiste Muire and to be immersed in such a thriving, dynamic community

I wish our Junior Cycle, Leaving Certificate and L.C.A. students well in their forthcoming exams I know you will do your very best I wish you all a very happy, restful summer. I thank Staff, Parents, Parents Association and our Board of Management for their continued support of all our endeavours

Last year I played Violet Newstead in the school’s production of “Nine to Five” It was the highlight of my Transition Year experience, and I made memories and friends for life We began auditions within the first days back at school, and before I knew it, rehearsals were in full swing. I remember sitting the GP doing our initial read through and feeling so much excitement for what was ahead. My favourite scene to rehearse would have to have been the Act 1 finale “Shine Like the Sun”. The songs message was so powerful and it felt incredible to be singing it alongside two of my closest friends. I’ll never forget standing backstage just before our first Monday matinee I had performed on stage countless times before, but never after putting in so much work and never with so much to do However those nerves were so forgotten once I stepped out onstage, and the rush I felt was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

My advice to anyone considering auditioning for the musical this year would be don’t assume anything! You never know who they are looking for and it very may be you!

HistoryoftheMusical

Since its founding in 1860, Coláiste Muire Ennis has cultivated a vibrant tradition of music and drama, integral to its educational ethos. Historical records from the school's early years highlight the importance placed on the arts, with music instruction and the acquisition of "two magnificent pianos" among the initial investments .

The school's commitment to musical theatre gained momentum in the mid-20th century, with notable productions such as The Gondoliers (1940), Bohemian Girl (1951), and The Arcadian (1954) gracing the stage. In recent decades, the annual school musical has become a cornerstone of the academic calendar, showcasing the talents of our senior students. Memorable performances have included Les Misérables, Fiddler on the Roof, Grease, Cats, and Mamma Mia! .

These productions offer students invaluable opportunities to engage in various aspects of theatre, from acting and singing to set design and stage management, fostering teamwork, creativity, and confidence The school musical is consistently regarded as one of the main highlights of a student's time at Coláiste Muire

Building on this proud tradition, we are thrilled to announce that next year's school musical will be Sister Act. This uplifting production, known for its catchy tunes and heartwarming story, promises to be an exciting project for our students and a delightful experience for audiences.

RIt’s impossible not to feel a bittersweet mix of emotions Our journey together has been full of ups and downs, and this day marks the culmination of it all But before we let the nostalgia overwhelm us, I promise to keep this as uplifting as possible

It feels like just yesterday that Coláiste Muire opened its doors to one of the most academically gifted and hardworking year groups to walk through them. Fast forward 2,438 days, and here we are, standing on the cusp of a new chapter. When we first arrived as wide-eyed first years, we could barely manage the oversized uniforms and the bags that seemed to weigh more than our books I can still remember our first assembly in the Dánlann, where we were told that these next 5-6 years would fly by. Back then, we didn’t give it much thought, but now, standing here today, I can’t help but agree it truly does feel like it’s all passed in the blink of an eye Today is not just a celebration of our academic achievements; it’s a celebration of us as a year group School often brings to mind stress, exams, and sleepless nights And yes, we’ve had our share of all of that, especially this year But more than anything, we’ve shared laughter, joy, and the kind of friendships that make everything worthwhile

It has honestly been nearly impossible to stay in a bad mood here at Coláiste, especially with our year group Whether it was a game of rounders, decorating the Leaving Cert area with festive cheer, or even our more “practical” pursuits, like advocating for free parking, we’ve always approached everything with energy and enthusiasm

And let’s not forget the deep, unspoken way we’ve learned from each other not just from textbooks, but from the shared moments of laughter, the inside jokes, and those little things that remind us of the friendships we’ve built Even as we face the unknown future, these bonds will remain. When we remember the days spent on the back pitch, the musical nights at St. Mary’s Hall, or the chaos of Mission Week, we’ll smile at the memories we've created together Our time together has been far from ordinary We’ve weathered a pandemic, a bomb threat, and perhaps worst of all the temporary absence of the canteen I can still remember how strange and awkward it felt when Covid hit. As first years, we were just getting to know one another, and suddenly, we were forced to stay apart But we pushed through, surviving the awkward silences of Teams calls and the endless confusion over first-year maths It wasn’t easy, but we persevered As we approach the end of our time here, we have one final activity as a year group While it may not be the most exciting thing on our to-do list, I’ve been reliably informed that attendance is, in fact, mandatory

Our time in Coláiste will not be defined by grades, popularity, or achievements Instead, it will be remembered for the friends who made us smile and laugh each day The future is uncertain, but we face it with a shared sense of purpose and joy As the saying goes, “those days are gone so go on now, go fly.” And, just in case things get tough, I’ll leave you with one final piece of wisdom from Muhammad Ali: “If they can make penicillin out of mouldy bread, they can sure make something out of you ”

Before I conclude, I want to offer a huge thank you to the teachers and staff of Coláiste. Each of us has our own personal heroes in this school the ones who made us want to return each day And while we may joke about it, there’s no denying the importance of the law in ensuring we kept coming back In all seriousness, thank you to everyone here for making Coláiste such a special place There is no other school quite like this one, where the support and guidance are matched by the respect and appreciation from staff You have all played a huge role in shaping h d d d ill l h impact you’ve had on our lives

And finally, to my year thank you for everything It has been an absolute honour and privilege to be your Deputy Head Girl, and I will carry that with me forever While it’s hard to say goodbye, I’ll leave you with a quote from Winnie the Pooh: “How lucky are we to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard ”

Here’s to the future, to what lies ahead, and to the unforgettable memories we’ve made together

Reflection

I have learned a lot of new things this past year, not just school stuff, but overall. I think my brain might have grown to the size of Mount Everest, but I have grown as a person too. People used to tell me that there is a massive change between primary and secondary school but I don’t think there really is I definitely noticed the hours, however it was all worth it when you get to go uptown with your friends on a Friday! As much as I have enjoyed my first year in Coláiste, there are things I would’ve liked someone to tell me before starting this new chapter

The first piece of advice I would like to give is “be organised”! As one very wise English teacher once said “organisation is key”. You should always leave out the things you want to remember the night before, because believe me, you will not remember them otherwise. I learnt this the hard way. Countless times! Trust me, I am still learning, just this week a friend asked me to bring her in denim shorts. I left them upstairs on my desk and, of course, I forgot them!

One piece of information I can not recommend enough is being confident to talk to new people and make new friends. I have met so many amazing, wonderful, kind, caring new friends that I would not have met any other way. The way I thought was easiest to make new friends is by joining all the extra-curricular activities that are in the school It is much easier to connect with people when you are doing something you both enjoy Don’t worry if you don’t get on with everyone Out of the billions of people on earth, not every one of them is going to be your best friend, and that’s ok!

Don’t stress if you don’t get in the same class as all of your friends I only got in a class with one person that I knew, but then I realised all the familiar faces from the other activities that are in the school Now, I would say I am in the class with all of my closest friends - and living my best life! At the start of the year, I thought it was the end of the world when I didn’t get the subjects I wanted and my other friends got theirs However, I not think I would have regretted it all if I had changed anything!

If I have learned anything since coming to Coláiste Muire last September, it’s when you do something - give it your absolute all! Whether that is exams, matches, homework assignments, or anything at all Coláiste has shown me that hard work is worth it because there is always a reward In this school, we get to do things that other schools don’t I saw this during several occasions, but some stood out to me more than others, especially Mission Week and Coláiste Fest I realised how much power the school has when we all worked together I saw this in countless ways - such as fundraising thousands of euro for charities and a school in Africa - creating experiences and memories that I will never forget

In conclusion, enjoy the short time you have in 1 Year, as it goes too fast! Be your best self and give it everything you’ve got, because you only get one shot. Have fun, make memories and don’t forget to laugh. Good luck!

Reflection

This past year has felt like I was given a blank sketchbook, so much room for colour, fun and growth All I had to do was pick up the paintbrush Transition year has been, without a doubt, one of the best years of my life Looking back, I have made so many new friends and countless memories The skills I developed will stay with me forever I can confidently say that I have grown, not only as a person, but as a teammate, friend and student

y to and g in he took art for t

g , p y y never found myself bored or looking for something to do

Transition year also helped me in choosing possible future career paths Careers class helped me understand what jobs I would suit based on my personality and strengths and what roles I would excel in I now know that I am somewhat of a “social butterfly”, working well with others I found that I have leadership qualities and have a tendency to lean into a managerial positions My work experience was invaluable in my search for my career possibilities I went into my old primary school and into University Hospital Limerick Working in the primary school, I discovered that I love working with children and helping them learn I adored every minute of observing in the hospital These experiences helped me choose my subjects for leaving cert and gave me more clarity on what career I want to pursue

Overall, I have had a fantastic year in transition year, full of laughter, fun and opportunities to grow and learn To me, it should be a staple in every students learning journey The reality is, I am so glad that I embraced the spirit of Ty, picking up that oh-so important paintbrush, because now I have a perfectly curated, kaleidoscope of memories that will last a lifetime
