The Music Award Holder’s Recital on Thursday 6 February proved to be a showcase of Cokethorpe’s musically talented. Performers presented a diverse programme covering a range of instrumental and vocal styles. It is always positive to see pupils from all year groups delivering something collectively and there are certainly some younger pupils hot on the heels of those a few years ahead of them! Congratulations to all of the performers.

Woodwind Recital

The Woodwind Recital proved to be an excellent showcase for Mr Adlington’s pupils. In contrast to previous Recitals this term, the programme was dominated by GCSE and A Level students. Philip Thornton (Fifth Form, Harcourt) and Henry Leonard-Taylor (Fifth Form, Swift) each performed confident solos on the clarinet. This was followed by a polished performance by Katherine Woolley (Upper Sixth, Queen Anne) on the flute, and then an equally polished musical rendition of The Mountain by her brother Edward (Fifth Form, Queen Anne) on the saxophone. The programme was concluded with two Grade 8 clarinet pieces performed stylishly by Ross Battersby (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne), after which he was joined by the clarinet group - Henry, Phillip, Florian Goette (Third Form, Queen Anne), Richard Turner (Fourth Form, Feilden), May Manning (Upper First, Swift) and Hannah Berry (Upper First, Feilden) for a rendition of Tum Balalaika and Deep River. Congratulations and thanks to all involved.

Singing Recital

presented a variety of songs ranging from Handel by way of Irish folksong to Cry Me A River. Although Drama commitments meant we missed out on the Third and Fourth Form singers on this occasion, the audience greatly enjoyed Lower Sixth Former Kathryn Norris’s (Vanbrugh) characterful performance of Popular from Wicked. Many congratulations to all the performers, especially to those for whom this was their first ever solo performance.

Chris Prendergast Visit

Strings Magazine

The Corinthian Room was the setting on Monday 10 February for a lunchtime recital, showcasing the talents of thirteen Senior School students all of whom take singing lessons at School. This is one of a series of concerts focussing on a particular instrument or instrument family. Lower First was particularly well represented, with Frankie Brown (Vanbrugh), Camilla Kilgour (Swift), Téo Loeffen (Gascoigne) and Hollie Jackson (Swift) giving us a lively selection of songs from stage and screen before Charlie Clarke (Harcourt), Lily Sweet (Queen Anne) and Athis Knox (Feilden) gave polished renditions of pieces from their recent and forthcoming singing exams. The Upper Firsts did not disappoint as Megan Cambrey (Feilden), Amy Didcock (Queen Anne), Scarlett Howard (Gascoigne), Freddie Gray (Gascoigne) and Sophie Wheeler (Swift)

Abbey Chamber Concert

On Sunday 6 April Cokethorpe students and staff performed in the series of Abbey Concerts at St Nicholas Church in Abingdon. The concert featured performances by Lukas Russell (Upper First, Gascoigne), Aidan King (Lower Sixth, Gascoigne), Ross Battersby (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne), Katherine Woolley (Upper Sixth, Queen Anne), Jacob Yolland (Upper Sixth, Gascoigne), and Mr Chim; accompanied by Mrs Payne.

On Monday 10 February, visiting music teacher Ian Aguado-Bush invited his friend Chris Prendergast, drummer for The Kooks and Alex Clare, into School to give his students some master classes. Chris has played on hit songs such as Too Close by Alex Clare and numerous Kooks songs.
