COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director It is close to the end of February and last night there was another 6-8 inches of snow, adding insult to injury. I need to get the bike to the dealer for warrantee work and servicing before spring, but the weather, driveway and road conditions have not cooperated. The snow along the driveway is taller than me in places. I’m looking forward to a break from the freezing temperatures. I’m off to the greater Atlanta area for a few days of work next week. When I return I’m hoping we begin to thaw out soon. Wishful thinking? Area membership is still strong. We usually see an uptick in membership as spring comes closer and more new Concours owners find us. As of today there are 592 members and 147 associates in the Northeast. There are 469 guest forum subscriber in the Northeast. The number of expired members was lower than normal over the past month or so. As you read through this issue, you will notice that the winter weather has not put a damper on the COG spirit. There were several social activities reported on, and each one had good attendance. Some examples are the Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto, the Big Chill Meet & Greet, MA Opening season social, and the Long Island Meet and Greet. Ben & Abbe took advantage of the weather and hosted a Hudson Valley snow tubing outing at Hunter Mountain, NY. Don’t fret if you missed out… there are more activities on the calendar. Be sure to take a peek in this issue, although the online calendar is the definitive source for up to date activity information. See Terry’s column for advance info on a Fall Rally in Lake George. Also on the schedule are several weekend rides in New England, a joint Northeast/Southeast weekend event in July, and a new location for Dog Days Weekend in August. Online registration is open for the Northeast Spring Fling Rally. Jason wrote up a small bit of information and the registration form is available in this issue. As he would say, “Book your rooms.” Russell & Martha will be running Bug-Splat again at the rally to raise donations for a good cause. Reports from the Cortez, CO 2015 National committee are very positive. They are working hard to pull the schedule together. Registration is doing well and they needed to find additional overflow lodging, as they filled the rally HQ and first batch of overflow rooms. Some lucky northeast members are going to have a great time at this rally.

Tim Anderson #9470 We’ve all got serious cabin fever and PMS with the past month of severe winter weather, but Spring will definitely be here soon! Now is a great time for planning for the coming events and figuring out which ones to put on your ‘must do’ list. The Ride & Event Schedule starting on page 8 is filling up well with all the plans being made or 2015. One of the first will be the Spring Fling in Bedford, PA. See page 7 for the full details and a

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 Greeting from the frigid Northeast! I send my condolences to our northern friends in New England who are so sick of snow at this point they're probably contemplating moving to someplace more pleasant...like Death Valley! Fear not fellow COGgers Spring must eventually find it's way to these climes and we'll be ready. I'm going to start looking into another day ride in April-May perhaps the same route from last year, it seemed to be a good one. We'll try a different lunch stop this time though. Stay tuned to the forum and website for updates. The Spring Fling will be here before you know it so if you're planning on attending book dem rooms lickety split. I'll have to miss this one due to my niece/goddaughter's ROTC commissioning ceremony that weekend. If you haven't been to a rally this is a good one to start with, Jason Kaplitz, rallymeister extraordinaire, throws a mean shindig! I'm also unable to attend the National due to my son's graduation from Navy Basic should fall somewhere in that week if all goes to plan. But, since that leaves a week for another trip I will be at Americade for the full week. I'll try to do a day ride that week for any members attending. I keep it fluid due to the fickle Adirondack weather so I'll post closer to the event and provide folks with contact info who'll be in town. The big news is that we'll be hosting another Lake George Fall Rally. Our target dates are the weekend of Sept. 24-27 or Oct. 1-4. We'll announce final dates sometime in April or

May when Motel Montreal comes out of its winter slumber. We'll have at least one new route from my usual package with Scott's new twistylicious discovery! Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and let's all think warm thoughts! See you all come Spring!

MA, ME, NH, VTGreg & Tracey Habel # 7010/7010A Enough of this living in a Snow-globe; I want out! Beautiful as it is, it is not conducive to Motorcycle riding. I say bring on Spring!! According to the calendar Spring is only about 4 weeks away, however looking out my window I am not so sure. We must keep the faith that the roads will eventually clear and the temps will rise and Spring will arrive. With that said Greg & I will be hosting our first Meet & Greet of the season at Lowell’s Restaurant in Mendon, MA on Saturday, March 28th and with any cooperation from Mother Nature Greg will be leading an afternoon ride after lunch. On Saturday, February 7th I hosted our 2015 opening Social at JJ Boomers in Lowell, MA (Greg couldn’t make it due to having the Flu). With about 12 members in attendance we all enjoyed good company and conversation about the upcoming year and all the plans folks have. I held a raffle for a couple of gift certificates and gave away my commemorative COG 25th Anniversary Rally calendar as we had 2 of them. Pete Stevenson was the winner of the $25 Gift certificate to Murphs; Linda Stephenson won the calendar and Gary Ruppert won a $50 gift certificate to Twisted Throttle. Congratulations everyone and happy shopping!

are looking to do a tire change at Tech Day please contact Pat regarding having your new tires shipped directly to his house. We ask that folks make sure to register for this event and note in your comment the work you would like to do so that we can make sure that we have enough garage space for everyone. We will have the usual coffee & muffins in the morning and lunch with water/ soft drinks will be served in the afternoon. Whether you are doing work; just coming by to help out a fellow COGger or just to hang out we ask that everyone register for this event as space and parking are limited. A big thank you goes out to Kevin Martin for several great rides and overnighters that he will be hosting this year for our area starting in April. If enough people sign up for the overnighters, Kevin will try to secure a group hotel rate. You can find them all on the NE calendar. We may also be adding a few more items to the calendar as there are a few things still in the planning stages so check the calendar periodically for any updates. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net. Please be sure to register on-line at on the NE events calendar at www.cog-online.org, if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. See you soon! Tracey and Greg

The snow that descends on much of Canada at this time of year blessedly has not coincided with our monthly meetings here in southern Ontario. Attendance does drop off somewhat over the winter months but there are stalwarts that make it out for an evening of camaraderie and the telling of a lie or two! The big event for us over the winter is the Toronto International Motorcycle Super Show. It is held on the first weekend of January at the International Centre near Pearson (Toronto) Airport in Mississauga, just west of Toronto. Pri-

(Each person is contacted individually the week after the show.) Interest in the Connie both new and original remains high. It is a lot of fun chatting with riders in general about their bikes and riding interests and extolling the virtues of COG.

marily for clubs, dealers and accessory vendors there are sections for vintage and custom bikes and for owners to sell their bikes. Booth space is supplied to clubs at no charge. Again, Canadian Kawasaki had their manufacturers’ display at the show this year.

And on a related topic, Peter Jackson, who had a spill last fall that banged him up (now largely recovered and back at work) and his ‘98 C10, was able to source a like-new upper fairing from an attendee at the show who had one from a ’03 and who had indicated same on the contact sheet!

(continued from page 3)

The show draws riders from all over Ontario, eastern Quebec, Michigan, upstate New York and even Pennsylvania. COG GTA has had a booth in the show for 12+ years. We have handouts, a contact sheet for follow-up after the show, and knowledgeable staff to answer questions, all in an attempt to bring riders, whether Connie owners or not, into the COG fold. Group members supply bikes for folks to sit on. This year John McClean supplied his venerable ’86 Silverdammit! Again this year Canadian Kawasaki sourced a new C14 for display, in this case a black 2014, graciously supplied by Fast Track Motorsports in Dorchester, Ontario. We extend out thanks to Jeff Quilty, Ontario Sales Manager for Big Green and Charlie Forgues of Fast Track for their continuing support of COG GTA.

Simon, Martin, & Peter spreading the word at the Toronto International Motorcycle Show

Each year we discover Connie owners who are unaware of COG or they do not make the connection between Concours and Kawasaki. We direct them to the COG website and ask them to provide their info on the contact sheet for follow -up. This year we had 41 people sign the sheet, roughly double over last year.

4

And each year we get a bit smarter. For next year to strengthen the ConcoursKawasaki connection we’ll post a Kawasaki banner along with our big COG banner. We’ll also post the meeting locations and times and a Quick Response (QR) code to immediately direct folks to the website. And add the QR to the business cards and other handouts. I encourage other local groups to participate in a show to spread the word, be it over a weekend or a one-day at a swap meet using a card table. The major obstacle is cost. As I said the booth space is provided at no charge. Check with the organizers; if not free I’m sure it will not be too costly for a non-profit organization. I extend my appreciation to the booth staff for a job very well done. I also want to single out Richard de Jong who is the prime mover for show contact and getting the booth set up and knocked down. Thanks, Richard!! Enjoy the rest of the winter, everyone. It is the price we pay for democracy and the riding season. However, there are some groundhogs in Canada and the US with whom I want to have a little chat...

Maryland Russell Fleming #599 Hope everyone had a Great Holiday. Here in MD & South Central PA the season was kicked of on January 25 with The Big Chill Meet & Greet at Jack & Deb’s house in York, PA. It was a good time had by all. Check the COG ride schedule for the details on up coming rides.

Rides lied up include the March 21-22 Crab Cake Ride, the April 11 Meet & Greet hosted by Chuck Landis, and the May 3 C14 Ride at Fredrick, MD. May 14-17 is the Spring Fling in Bedford, PA, bring your money so you can play Bug Splat 50-50 which I will run to raise money for a local charity which will give COG a good name in the community so they will welcome us back again. Here is a report by Deb about The Chill Meet & Greet: Nineteen members from the Northeast Chapter rallied around the wood stove at Jack Frederick's garage on Sunday, January 25, at the "Big Chill" to enjoy bowls of chili, share past riding adventures and look forward to warmer days and future rides. This gathering was successfully squeezed in between two snow events, but that did not hamper a few hardy souls from arriving on bikes. The event marked the kickoff to another season of good times and rides with fellow Coggers in 2015. Hopefully, we can recruit a few new members for the "Table of Truth" where tell-alls are a must and secrets are not allowed! New friendships were forged and a good time was had by all. This was the first time Jack & Deb hosted an event, and they look forward to holding another gathering later in the year. See You at one of the rides in the near future.

NY (Long Island) Roger Mercer #8867 Well it’s February 16th, it didn’t get out of the teens today, single digits this morning, a solid 8-10” of snow still on the ground, yet we still had a COGger RIDE to our meet & greet today here on Long Island!!! Kevin Remsen rode from Oceanside to Lindenhurst, a good half hour ride. Yes folks, he really does prefer his motorcycle over his car!! We had a great turn out, 14 of us for lunch. Not too shabby for February. A great big thank you to Rich Wackett for putting this event together. Great people and great conversation. I know I’ve said it before, but we really do have a great group here on the island. We had a couple new folks and a few of the usual suspects show up. While we ate and caught up with

everyone, we nailed down a couple of dates for upcoming events. The first will be an “Events Planning” meet & greet. We will be hosting that at our house on March 14th at 3 PM. That event is already on the calendar and on the Event Schedule on Page 8! Some of the topics we will be covering are what rallies folks plan on attending, who plans to go to the National & the possibility of hosting our own rally over the summer. The second is going to be a tech day hosted by rAt Cycles, again, at our house. That will be on April 11th, 9 AM-5 PM(ish) Please e-mail me with the type of service you plan on performing that day so we can put a schedule together. Please bring with you any fluids you will be needing that day OR prepay and I can order whatever you need. Please check with me before purchasing any parts, fluids or tires as I may be able to get you a better price and free shipping. Hope to see you all soon.

Long Island Meet & Greet Crew

Hudson Valley Snow Tubing Day By Ben Otunu #8594 The 2015 winter from hell required a different approach to off-season Meet & Greet. Abbe and I thought it was best to work with nature rather than against it since we did not have a chance in hell of getting the temperature to rise above freezing anytime soon. The normal Diner Meet and Greet was becoming old and mundane, so we bounced around a few ideas including indoor Go-cart racing, skiing and snow

2015 - Issue #1 – Early Spring

tubing. Snow tubing won, as it was the most affordable and within everyone’s skill level. It was time to find new and exciting event that members could participate in during this historically cold winter. The decision was made to start exploring possible locations with visits to Hunter Mountain, Windham and West Point ski resorts as possible venues for the Meet & greet.

(l-r) Sydney, Jeenie, Abbe Otunu, Wayne Sikorski and Helene Deely

Hunter Mountain seemed ideal because of the ease of access, affordability and the 18 tubing lanes available for all age groups. So Hunter Mountain it was! We had no idea of what to expect as neither one of us has ever gone snow tubing. The event was eventually posted on the COG calendar and Facebook, all we could do now is wait for people to sign up. Our expectation was set low, extremely low. At best we thought two or three people may show up given the distance and the predicted bad weather for the weekend. To our surprise nine people accepted the Facebook invite, five on COG calendar and another three made commitments by phone. The final tally was seven COG members and five friends of COG. The geographic distribution extended from South Jersey to Boston, MA. The $20 entrance fee was good for two hours of slope time for as many runs as you could you make it up the hill. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the resort had an airport style conveyer walkway that made it a lot easier to make it to the top of the hill without killing our knees. I must have gone at least ten or more times with warm-up breaks at the fire pit once in awhile. After the first few runs, everyone was trying to find out the most aerodynamic

way of covering the longest distance possible before coming to a stop. Some people who shall remain nameless seem to only make it halfway down the hill most of the time. I guess too many advice on form and technique can get confusing sometimes. Snow Tubing was not the only topic of discussion. What good is a fire pit without cigars? Besides tubing, the group had a couple of Cigar aficionados including our very own, Cigar Wayne and Outback Jon with their box of cigars. The two held court around the fire pit discussing numerous subjects including guns, rounds, caliber, magazine restrictions, state gun laws and more. Yes, just another typical COG Meet and Greet except the temperature was around 15 degrees and we are sitting around a fire. The crowd was manageable, till about 3 o'clock when the lines started getting Longer and the wait time went from about seven minutes to nearly 15 minutes before you get to the top of the hill. Nobody seemed to mind the slightly longer wait toward the end as many of us had already slid down the mountain about a dozen times. By around 4 o'clock people started heading home to beat the snow that was projected to cover the entire Northeastern United States. First to leave was Wayne and Maryann Geiser who made the longest trac all the way from Boston with an overnight in Kingston, NY followed by Wayne Sikorski and Helene from South Jersey. Thanks to all the members and friends who attend: Jonathan Gould, Wayne Geiser, Maryann Geiser, Wayne Sikorski and Helene Deely plus five nonCOG members. Special thanks to Abbe Otunu for doing most of the leg-work that made the even a success.

VA/WV Ride Report & Planning Our group has many rides and meets planned and we have plenty of opportunity for an enjoyable riding season in 2015. We haven’t had much opportunity to get together during the winter months, but we did have a nice ride dodging ice on January 4th, where 5 of us rode out the Parkway then found our way out 39 to Warm Springs, VA for lunch. Then a few days later, on the 10th, we met at the DC motorcycle show, where 13 of us and a few guests enjoyed lunch at Capitol City Brewery.

scheduled for March 7th in Charlottesville at Michie’s Tavern, 683 Thomas Jefferson Pkwy. The VA/WV team has rides scheduled for every month this year and we are hoping to add more. Dan Hermes is working on setting up a track day where we can see how well we handle our steeds. This will be communicated as soon as we have all the details, but it should be a great day! April 12th we have a meet & greet for breakfast and a ride in Gordonsville at the Inwood Restaurant on Route 15, just North of the roundabout. Meeting at 8:00 AM for a good meal and then there will be several options for rides afterward. May 2nd is another breakfast ride in Churchville. We will meet at T Bone Tooters, 3790 Churchville Ave at 8:00 AM. Then we have the day, heading west out 33 into WV, need I say more? This will be a good warm up ride for the Spring Fling, which is two weeks later. June 3rd we have a dinner meet & greet in Harrisonburg, VA at Clementine’s, 14 South Main Street. In July we have two weekend rides planned. On July 10th we have a ride planned with our members out of North Carolina. We will be staying at the New River Campground, (Hotels close by) and enjoying a couple days of riding NC/VA roads. Marion and the Back of the Dragon is an hour away, Boone is an hour away in the other direction. Riding in any direction from that spot will be great. On July 24th we will get together for some sun and enjoyment at VA Beach KOA. We will be taking a ride to the Cape Hatteras Light House on Saturday. If you’re interested, we are plan-

On February 7th we had a meet & greet at Shawn’s Smokehouse BBQ Company. The weather cooperated and we had nine people show up and enjoyed some really good BBQ. (See photo on page 2) All expressed plans for doing a lot of riding this summer and it was a good meet. Only one brake failure in the group….. We have another lunch meet & greet

ning dinner at the Smoke BBQ Restaurant and Bar, 10900 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. Order “THE” Hot Dog, wow, it’s awesome. On August 6th, we have Dog Days in Staunton, VA. This rally should be great! Some of the best roads in the country. Staunton offers a great launching spot. September 9th we are back to meet & greets in Richmond. October 16th weekend at camp out at one wheel only, Pat Sprague’s house. November 13th weekend is the annual Burr Ride in Natural Bridge. All ride information is available on the NE online calendar or feel free to drop Glenn or me an email or call. We are available for other rides and any suggestions. Maryland Meet & Greet Russell Fleming #599 What a way to start a weekend with 10 inches of snow on Saturday the day before the Meet & Greet in Maryland and South Central PA at Illiano J & P Pizza in Hampstead, MD. I started cleaning driveways at 8 AM and finished at noon, just in time for me to cleanup and make the get together. Good thing I’m only 15 minutes away from Illiano’s. There were 11 hungry people who show-up for some good Italian food and motorcycle talk and everyone asked if could we come back here for another M&G sometime. Event was attended by Russell & Martha Fleming, Jack Frederick & Deb Bahn, Bowie Pearre, Dwight Hoyle, Chuck & Tracy Landis, Steve & Maricric Browne and Dale McGinns.

You’re done! Thanks for helping! photo courtesy Kevin Martin #145

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! In a recent discussion about the Northeast-specific online web pages, I mentioned that there seemed to be fewer pictures taken and shared during this year’s events. It was suggested that a short reminder might be in order. So here it is (there are only three steps) …

10

1.

Remember to take your camera—Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.

2.

Take a picture— … or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”

3.

Share them—Include them in a post in the forum thread about the event you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior. If you already use a photo hosting site, use the direct link from the individual photo or the photo album in your message. Alternatively, you can use the “Media” portion of the forum (see the top banner on the forum web page) to upload your photos.
