The School:

The International School Ho Chi Minh City is a private, non-denominational, international school for expatriate and Vietnamese children. Established in 1993, ISHCMC was the first international school to open in Ho Chi Minh City. The campus is situated in the An Phu District about twenty minutes from the centre. As an International Baccalaureate Organization World School, our curriculum is international in focus and is based on the frameworks of the IB Primary Years Programme (Preschool to Grade 5), the IB Middle Years Programme (Grades 6 to 10), and the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12). The school provides a safe, caring environment and a challenging curriculum driven by our mission of “fostering individual ability.”

The high school curriculum (Grades 9 to 12) is guided by the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. All students in Grades 11 and 12 take IB courses. In addition to their six DP courses, students must complete Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) commitments in Grades 11 and 12, coursework in Theory of Knowledge, and an Extended Essay (for IB Diploma candidates). ISHCMC students primarily attend universities in North America, The United Kingdom, Asia and Australia; courses are collegepreparatory in nature.

Grading:

ISHCMC grades on the IB 1-7 scale and does not calculate GPAs for our students. In cases of transfer students, prior courses at other schools are considered in determining passing credits towards graduation only. ISHCMC will attach official records from prior schools but does not take responsibility for verifying their accuracy.

Successful completion of TOK (Theory of Knowledge), a 4000-word Extended Essay, and CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service).

Completion of 3 Higher Level (HL) courses and 3 Standard Level (SL) courses and the achievement of a score of at least 24 points overall.

IB DP Theory of Knowledge Theory of Knowledge is an epistemological course that trains students to question the knowledge they acquire in all of their IB subjects. Requirements: 

The application of these skills to real-life situations in a comprehensive presentation (all ISHCMC students).



A written demonstration of their understanding of the nature of knowledge and knowledge issues in a 12001600 word externally assessed essay in response to an IBO prompt. (IB Diploma candidates only).

Theory of Knowledge teaches students to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of different ways of knowing, to be critical and questioning and to support arguments with carefully considered evidence from their own experiences.

Co-Curricular The high school has a rich and varied extracurricular programme. High school students are also given the opportunity to represent the school in various athletic and academic events organized by the Mekong River International School Association (MRISA). These events provide opportunities to travel to other countries to engage in the activities of their choice. Above all, the after-school activities programme seeks to unite positively, students, coaches, teachers and students from a variety of international backgrounds through shared experiences.

IB Middle Years Programme

Community service is fundamental to ISHCMC’s ethos and an integral part of the curriculum in all three sections of the school.

The MYP is the ISHCMC curriculum in Grades 6-10. Students are expected to follow courses in eight subject areas.



20+ school-wide service projects are brought together under the umbrella of GIN (Global Issues Network)





All are student initiated and student led; each subcommittee of Education, Environment, Empowerment and Health has a student committee leader.

ISHCMC opts to have its MYP grades externally moderated to ensure international standardisation, and consistently scores above the world average.





Middle and high school students are required to demonstrate a long-term commitment to at least one project per year, continually reflect upon their personal development and provide evidence of having produced the prescribed outcomes.

Students in Grades 9 and 10 are required to be actively involved in Community and Service and work with local NGOs, charities and orphanages.



The Personal Project, the culmination of the MYP studies, is wholly student-led, completed on a topic of student interest and developed over the course of six months. The student’s personal project journal, the final product and a reflective essay are assessed.

Students are encouraged to become caring and compassionate global citizens through participation, and are also challenged to stand for these coveted leadership positions.
