The Sky Viewing Room is a place to relax and observe the sky close to a pond on campus. The project brings attention to the sky by drawing the eye up through slats. The occupant is seated slightly below grade to introduce a new perspective on the site. The shape creates a flow through the space that brings new activity to an otherwise unused location.

The Garden Club is a gallery, exhibition, library, hall, and garden on a site in Roanoke, VA. The club is subterainian to make more room for the garden above. Light floods the club below through large light wells in the space where the floorplan diagram overlaps itself. A maintained garden is kept in the middle where the rooms below are projected on the landscape, wild garden surrounds.

Tasked with creating relief housing for the victims of the earthquake in Ecuador, a system was devised to create a dynamic and organic community. The issue of monotony was diagnosed in many relief and low income housing projects; however, the single unit was never the issue. Instead, the focus of the project was how a community is formed. Precedents of refugee camps and favelas were studied and the result is a unit that changes based on the family and allows an opportunity for a small shop to be run by the family. Organic growth comes by building the homes as needed and off grid.

Presented with examples of performance art by Marina Abramovic, Chris Burden, and Yoko Ono inspiration to create an entry with a statement was quickly realized. First, a space was made that could hold and respond to the artists’ show. A large moving platform in the middle of the space creates a dynamic exhibition space. Minimal interior architecture keeps the focus on the art. The facade responds to the bay window language surrounding the site, but with a twist for foreshadowing. For the statement, Abramovic’s work was taken to heart and blood was used to designate the performance spaces.

Plus Plus Plus was a project that incorporated three different programs, a woodshop, a gallery, and an apartment for an artist in residence into one site in downtown Blacksburg. Located near a live music venue, a niche coffeeshop, a record store, and Virginia Tech’s art studios, my vision was to create a space that invited people in to hangout, play music, and have a good time. This kind of space is missing in the downtown area, so I chose to provide one for the community.
