Financial Commitment

Grants and scholarships include all (federal, state and Coe) gift assistance that does not require repayment. In recent years Coe invested over $14.7 million in our incoming class.

After financial aid is applied, the difference in cost is the remaining balance. Payment can be made per term or over the course of 10 months. Some families elect to use a Parent PLUS Loan to cover all or a portion of this out-of-pocket cost.

Terms to Know Direct Cost: The cost of education expenses billed by a college (tuition, room and board). Student Aid Index (SAI): The SAI is an eligibility index number that a college’s financial aid office uses to determine how much federal student aid the student would receive if the student attended the school. This number results from the information that the student provides in their FAFSA form. To calculate a SAI, a need-based analysis is conducted. The analysis takes into account the income and assets of the student and their parents or spouse, if applicable. The analysis formula used considers both taxed and untaxed income, as well as any assets and benefits received, such as unemployment or Social Security. Note: Your SAI is not the amount of money your family will have to pay for college nor is it the amount of federal student aid you will receive. It is a number used by the college to calculate the amount of federal student aid you are eligible to receive. Grants: Awards that do not need to be repaid. They are often need-based and vary in dollar amount. Coe Grants Federal Pell Grants Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOGs) Iowa Tuition Grants (ITGs) Loans: Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. Federal Direct Stafford Loans Federal Perkins Loans Parent PLUS Loans Out-of-Pocket Cost: The difference between the direct cost and scholarships, grants, loans and college work-study. Financial Aid Offer: Once you file, Coe typically receives your FAFSA results within two weeks. Within 10 days after that, we will mail your financial aid offer to you. Scholarships: Academically strong students or those with a particular skill or talent may qualify for renewable scholarships that do not need to be paid back. Work-Study: Federal and Coe work-study awards are valued at $1,300 and $1,800 per year (six to eight hours per week) and provide a job on or near campus.
