HOW DID YOU START YOUR CODING

where did it all begin for you?

“My earliest memory of anything code-related was when I was 11 and my friend and I messed with a Telnet command that plays a mini-version of Star Wars: A New Hope in the terminal.”

“I always had an interest in tech and wanted to build something of my own.

In sophomore year, I entered a hackathon with no knowledge of coding, just to see what it was about. So I searched YouTube for tutorials and pulled an allnighter to finish the project.

Ended up getting first place and fell in love with programming.”

“I learned SQL on the job because I was working in community and they had a built-in analytical SQL runner. So I would formalize questions and pair with a data scientist!

“I took a C course when I was in high school because it was super fun. Then, I didn't even own a computer so I had to download an emulator in my Android phone and practice C on that.

Before that, I did a computer project back in 7th grade on detecting laser using a web camera but that was mostly a bunch of stuff put together.”

The age old question that every student and young professional gets asked in interviews. You might have your next 5 years planned out, or you might have no idea what's in store.

We could say the same thing about the tech industry, as it is constantly evolving with the new integration of AI in all of your favorite products, AR/VR, Web3, and so much more. Innovation is happening, and as the next generation of computer scientists, the need for new skills will continue to evolve alongside us.

Be ready and on the lookout to solve the new problems the world presents!

At times, it can feel a bit overwh when trying to balance classes, hobbies, and personal interests. The experience in university is incredibly unique, and it can become problematic when it starts turning into a competition. The concept of passion looks very different on every CS student, if at all. And wether you're on a tech journey to save the world or to provide for yourself, there's a space for passion in every reason.
