KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE MUSICAL CELEBRATION Remember, reflect, and reconnect with family and friends as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with an evening of uplifting music, inspiration, and unity. This year’s theme, “Mission Possible II: Re-Building Communities Together,” celebrates his lifelong work of promoting equality, building understanding, and fostering community healing.

MONARCH MARCH Celebrate the life of the monarch butterfly with a day of hands-on activities and exploration at Lick Creek Park. Stroll through the Monarch Waystation, visit educational booths, plant seeds, enjoy wildflower walks, learn how to create a home waystation or butterfly garden, and take part in community science projects.

Shop native plants from the Post Oak Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas and enjoy family games and art activities. Parking for this come-and-go event is limited on-site, with additional spaces available at the equestrian lot.

WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with family-friendly activities, including birding tours, games, educational booths, storytime, animal ambassadors and seed garden giveaways. Learn tips for creating a bird-friendly yard or home and take guided walks or sit with the Rio Brazos Audubon Society.

Events held multiple times a year or tailored to a specific age or community group. Free programs for all ages are included.

BIRDING 101 New and experienced birders are invited to sharpen their skills with the Rio Brazos Audubon Society. Learn to identify birds by sight and sound, use field guides and binoculars, and explore the native and migratory species of the Brazos Valley.

The class meets at the Nature Center and includes hikes on Lick Creek Park trails.

Dress for the outdoors and wear closedtoed shoes. Binoculars are available to borrow at the Nature Center. The program has been made possible by the dedication of Rio Brazos Audubon Society volunteers for over a decade.

Create fun memories with friends and family without traveling far away. Choose your adventure or join us for favorites, such as a hot dog dinner, nature presentations, s'mores and a night hike. Learn camping basics and discover the nocturnal creatures that call Lick Creek Park home.

Preview community favorite Monarch March at Lick Creek Park! The Brazos Valley Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist will highlight the Post Oak Pollinator Plant Project (POPPP), a new native plant marker installation supporting monarchs, hummingbirds, bees and other pollinators.

Learn how native plants help pollinators thrive, discover ways to support them in your yard, and celebrate the power of local conservation.

The family-friendly overnight event begins at 6 p.m. Friday and ends at 7 a.m.

Saturday. Campers must bring a tent, supplies, snacks, and drinks. Electricity is not provided, so pack flashlights, tent lanterns, sleeping bags, insect repellent, and folding chairs. Children must be accompanied by an adult (18+), and pets are not allowed. Limited spots are available, and registration ends the Wednesday before camp.

Curious about the plants in your yard or that fascinating bug you found? Learn to identify wildlife and contribute to conservation using the iNaturalist app on your phone. Join Bruce Neville, Master Naturalist and leader of the Brazos Valley City Nature Challenge Team, for an informative class on using the app. You’ll also have a chance to prepare for the City Nature Challenge April 24–27.

ENJOYING DOG-FRIENDLY PARKS WITH YOUR FURRY BEST FRIEND Looking for a new adventure with your furry friend? You’re in the right place.

With 57 dog-friendly parks spread across 1,971 acres, there’s always somewhere new to explore. From shaded trails to open fields, College Station has plenty of space for tails to wag. (See parks on page 84.)

Dogs must be leashed in most areas, and owners should clean up after them. If your pup prefers off-leash fun, several dog parks offer plenty of room to run, benches for breaks, and shaded spots to cool down.

Dog Parks BARRACKS PARK 3331 Cullen Trail

Features a fenced-in recreational area with benches and a covered shelter where owners can relax while their pups play. Hydration fountains are conveniently located along the side of the park.

UNIVERSITY PARK 300 Park Road

Offers separate fenced-in play areas for small and large dogs, plus a wooded walkway leading to a large pond where dogs can cool off and swim. The park also features an agility obstacle course in the large-dog area and a wash and hydration station.

STEEPLECHASE

301 West Ridge Drive The 1.5-acre fenced-in area is perfect for dogs to burn off energy. A 0.2-mile walking loop inside the fence allows owners to get their steps in, too. When dogs need a rinse and wash, a hydration station is available, so bring a towel. Kids can enjoy a nearby play unit and basketball court.

Designated Off-Leash Trail LICK CREEK PARK

13600 Rock Prairie Road Among the park’s five miles of marked trails sits Raccoon Run, a 1.7-mile off-leash trail that gives dogs more room to roam. Dogs must be under voice control, and dog park rules apply.

Hydration stations and restrooms at the Gary Halter Nature Center are about a half-mile from Raccoon Run. This is the only off-leash trail in Lick Creek Park. Dogs must remain leashed on all other trails.

Dog Park Rules • Park hours are sunrise to sunset.

• Female dogs in heat are not permitted.

• Dogs younger than four months are not allowed in off-leash parks.

• Dogs older than four months must be rabies vaccinated and registered with Brazos County. Registration tags can be purchased through your veterinarian or the Aggieland Humane Society at 979.775.5755.

• Dogs must wear valid county and rabies vaccination tags.

Registration must cover one year from the issue date, matching the rabies vaccination date.

• Pets are not allowed off-leash, except in a designated dog park.

• Owners must clean up after pets on public property.

• Dogs must be removed if uncontrollable.

• Handlers must not allow dogs to dig holes and should fill any holes their dogs create.

Animal Control Ordinances • Pet owners must observe city ordinances, which are enforceable through the courts. Violations are subject to fines up to $500.

• Pets must remain leashed unless in a designated dog park or leash-free area.

• Excessive barking, howling, or other noise may result in a warning or citation.

• Failing to clean up after a pet off property violates city ordinance.

• Leaving an animal in a vehicle or trailer is unlawful during extreme temperatures.

• Nuisance behavior such as chasing, biting, or scratching may result in a warning or citation.

• Under state law, rabies vaccinations are required for dogs, cats, and ferrets over four months old.

TSUNAMI SWIM TEAM REGISTRATION ENDS JUNE 12 Get introduced to competitive swimming while building strength, improving stroke technique and gaining confidence in the water. Swimmers are encouraged to participate in NWAL and TAAF swim meets. The season runs April 22–Aug. 2, with practices at Adamson Lagoon at various times and meet times and locations varying throughout the season. A $10 discount applies for each additional sibling who registers.

Prerequisites Swimmers must be able to swim the length of a 25-yard pool unassisted and must be College Station residents or live in a city that does not have a swim team.

Parent Meeting Parents and swimmers are invited to a parent meeting on Wednesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. at Adamson Lagoon, where coaches will be introduced and information about the summer season and team expectations will be provided.

Evaluations The skill level of all swimmers (new and returning) will be evaluated to ensure placement in the appropriate practice group and maximize development. Evaluations are Monday, April 20, through Thursday, April 23, from 4:30–7 p.m. at Adamson Lagoon. Swimmers must attend one evaluation date, chosen after registration. On-site registration will be available during evaluations. The head coach will contact swimmers who register after the evaluation dates to schedule an alternate time.

Ever-Popular Games of Texas Returns July 30-Aug. 2 The 2026 Summer Games of Texas will return to premier venues across College Station and Bryan for the ninth time from July 30-Aug. 2.

The annual athletic festival is managed by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation and will be hosted by the cities of College Station and Bryan, along with Texas A&M University.

Previous host years include 1988, 1994, 2000, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2025.

Thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators will be in town for the Olympic-style festival, providing a significant economic boost and strengthening the community’s reputation as a top destination for sports tourism.

People of all ages filter through the Lincoln Recreation Center for activities and programs, but few realize the history and contributions of those who walked before them. The Lincoln Recreation Center bears an official Texas Historical Marker for African American Education, as it was College Station’s first and only African American high school. As our community continues to grow, it’s essential to celebrate – and reflect on – our forebears’ monumental contributions.

Thousands arrived in Brazos County as slaves. Formal education didn’t exist, but the Public School Act of 1871 changed that. By 1923, 127 African American students were enrolled in the A&M Consolidated School District. Buildings accommodated only elementary school students until an agreement was reached to bus them to Kemp High School in Bryan.

In the 1930s, the number of African American students grew steadily, along with tuition and transportation costs.

After approval in the 1941 bond election, the school district purchased five acres for $100 per acre to build a high school.

A&M Consolidated Negro School opened its doors for the 1941-42 academic year, consisting of a building with six classrooms, a principal’s office, and a homemaking cottage.

The school flourished, expanding to 10 teachers and 296 children. In 1945, a small plot one block away was purchased for an athletic field. The school’s name was changed to Lincoln High School in 1946, and Willie A. Tarrow was named principal.

On Jan. 20, 1966, a fire at Lincoln destroyed one of three classroom buildings, displacing 100 students. The facilities were not rebuilt, and the fire’s cause was never determined.

Some speculated it may have been set intentionally to force integration more quickly.

The local newspaper claimed an unknown arsonist set several mysterious fires during that time. At the end of the 1965-66 school year, Lincoln’s doors were shut for good, and the remaining students were integrated into A&M Consolidated schools.

Lincoln High served as the social hub for College Station’s Black community and developed a unique personality. The school colors were purple and gold, and students chose the panther as their mascot. The school’s motto was, “Forward Forever, Backward Never,” and its song was, “O’ Lincoln High.”

In 1967, an informal agreement between the City of College Station and the school district allowed the property to be temporarily used as a city park. The buildings were used for occasional gatherings of small church groups.

In 1968, the school district agreed to lease the land and facilities to the City for 10 years.

Discussions about integrating the A&M Consolidated School District began in 1956.

After a series of meetings and seminars, officials adopted a wait-and-see approach. In the early 1960s, the school district received notice that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had requested immediate integration of the city’s schools. An integration plan adopted by the school district was a stair-step method through which the Black elementary students would be fused with white elementary students, one grade at a time. Each year, a new grade would leave Lincoln and become integrated, and attendance at Lincoln became voluntary.

Two Lincoln teachers were reassigned to A&M Consolidated High School, and several white teachers were moved to Lincoln. By 1965, grades one and two had been phased into the A&M Consolidated school system.

The College Station Parks and Recreation offices moved into Lincoln and used the facilities for continuing education classes and as a neighborhood recreation center. City property adjacent to the school became an all-purpose sports field. The homemaking cottage served as the Parks and Recreation Department Office, and the industrial arts shop was converted into a department shop. In 1978, the city bought the land and refurbished the entire facility.

On June 6, 1980, the Lincoln Recreation Center was officially dedicated and has since served as a tribute to the school that once stood on the site. The center is home to many community activities, including youth after-school and summer programs, a senior outreach program, an immunization program, and an emergency management site.

The memories and influence of Lincoln High School remain, and its many trophies are proudly displayed.

In 1982, former students formed the Lincoln Former Students Association to organize biennial reunions, provide scholarships for Black students, and preserve the heritage and memories of the Lincoln School.

Voters approved a $4.3 million expansion in the 2008 bond election, adding a gymnasium, office and meeting space, and other improvements. The project was completed in 2017.

Today, the center carries on an indelible legacy of learning, community pride, and freedom.

Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial is Our Community’s Hidden Gem Tucked away in Veterans Park and Athletic Complex at 3101 Harvey Road is a hidden gem, a 12-acre site dedicated to veterans of our nation’s major wars. The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial (BVVM) includes life-sized statues, a Wall of Honor, interpretive panels, and memorial sites.

Their task was great and their sacrifice even greater, but their legacy stands firm, and their memories burn bright.” Bush later remarked that the BVVM is of similar quality to those on the famed mall in Washington, D.C.

Chartered on July 17, 2000, as a non-profit corporation, the BVVM is supported by generous residents, partners, and community organizations, including Brazos County and the municipalities of Bryan and College Station.

The mission of the BVVM’s all-volunteer board of directors is to proactively pay tribute to veterans through an educational venue where future generations can learn that freedom comes with a heavy price.

Former President George H.W. Bush helped dedicate the BVVM on Nov. 10, 2002. “The Brazos Valley community can stand proud,” Bush said. “The names that mark the memorial showcase the sons and daughters who gave

Louis L. Adam Memorial Plaza & Wall of Honor Within the Louis L. Adam Memorial Plaza sits the 250-ton red granite Wall of Honor, which serves as the memorial’s focal point.

The wall features the etched names of nearly 7,000 veterans from all periods of U.S. history who are family and friends of Brazos Valley residents.

Notable names include 24 presidents and former Texas A&M students who received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award. The bronze sculpture mounted at the top of the wall depicts a G.I. carrying a fellow soldier to safety. The statue is the work of artist Robert Eccleston of Schuyler Falls, N.Y.

Lynn Stuart Pathway & Memorial Sites Named after Brig. Gen. Louis Lynn Stuart (U.S. Army), the Lynn Stuart Pathway is a half-mile trail connecting the BVVM memorials. The pathway features interpretive panels with historical background for each conflict, granite markers, and steel benches adorned with donor plaques. Most of the sites have life-sized, bronze statues designed and sculpted by Navasota’s J. Payne Lara.

Notable sites along the trail include the War on Terror Memorial that displays a steel relic from one of the World Trade Center towers and the Vietnam War Memorial that features a 15-foot-high bronze UH-1D Huey helicopter plate depicting soldiers preparing to drop into a dangerous landing zone.

Park Curfews Neighborhood Parks: 11 p.m.–5 a.m.

Community Parks: 1–5 a.m.

Prohibited in All Parks • Glass bottles or containers

• Cutting, digging or destroying vegetation • Wading or swimming in park ponds • Littering

• Campfires • Livestock

• Hot air balloons

• Dunking booths

• Confetti or glitter

• Golf, including practice driving or hitting balls • Feeding ducks and waterfowl

• No tents or RV camping without prior approval from park staff.

• All wildlife is protected.

• Vehicles must park in designated paved areas only.

Off-road vehicles are not allowed.

• Non-city advertising is prohibited unless approved by contract. Anyone wishing to sell items (food, drinks, shirts, caps, etc.) or solicit from park patrons must apply for a Park Vendor Permit through the Parks and Recreation Office and may also need a Health Permit from the Brazos County Health Department.

• Gyms, boot camps and fitness groups must purchase a Park Vendor Permit through the Parks and Recreation Office to host workout sessions in city parks.

• Alcohol may be consumed by adults 21 and older.

Alcohol or any other items may not be sold without a TABC license.

• Fishing in park ponds is free and open to the public.

Texas Community Fishing Lake and state regulations apply. Contact Texas Parks and Wildlife for regulations, license information and daily bag limits.

• No pony rides, sidewalk chalk, crawfish boils or bounce houses without prior approval.

• Obey all “Fields Closed” signs. Field status is updated daily at cstx.gov/FieldStatus.

Rented Spaces • Pavilions may be used if not rented, but kitchen and restroom access is not allowed.

• Athletic fields must be reserved separately from pavilion rentals.

• Courts (tennis, pickleball, basketball and sand volleyball) are open on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved.

• Renters must follow all guidelines outlined in their rental agreement.

s t h g Li ! t u O HELP MIGRATING BIRDS STAY ON COURSE Lights at night can disorient migrating birds during the spring (March 1June 15) and fall (Aug. 15-Nov. 30) seasons, increasing the risk of fatal collisions with windows, glass doors, and glass walls.

Turn off nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. to provide safe passage for nocturnal travelers.
