December 2018 • Life In The Estates

Since its inception, Gables Estates has been a community comprised of extraordinary families that have significantly contributed to the South Florida landscape. From founder Arthur Vining Davis, who donated 55 acres and $1 million for Baptist Hospital to be built, to today’s most distinguished philanthropic families; our community is one where neighbors seek to make a difference not only in their own lives, but in the lives of others. One of our newest neighbors, Anthony Lopez, is no different. A true local, Anthony was born and raised in South Miami, and has ascended the ranks to become one of South Florida’s most successful young attorneys. He also dedicates much of his time and resources for causes that he’s passionate about, including Kristi House, an organization dedicated to healing and eradicating child sexual abuse in South Florida. Although Lopez is an avid automobile and airplane enthusiast today, he came from relatively humble beginnings. “My father is Cuban and my mother is German-Irish from New York. I grew up in South Miami and my father had a company that sold motion picture equipment,” explains Lopez. Attending Mast Academy High School, Lopez participated in the rowing club at the Miami Rowing Club. Studying Finance at Florida State University he had the aspirations of one day becoming a Wall Street executive. “My grandfather was an attorney in Cuba however, and my father kept pushing me to go to law school. The admiration that my father had for my grandfather really had an impact on me and it made me change my mind.” Lopez finished his undergraduate degree at Florida International University, before receiving a scholarship to attend Law School at St. Thomas University. By Lopez’s third year in Law School he took a job at a law firm that was representing Citizens Property insurance. “At the time, I was an associate and my job was to try to figure out ways to not pay claims. I didn’t feel good about that at all,” he explains. Within a few years the law firm closed down and one of the partners, Santiago El Hayek, called Lopez. “I was 28 years old. It was a great opportunity to become a partner at a young age and to practice something that was much more gratifying,” he explains. Lopez formed Marin, Eljaiek, Lopez and Martinez, Attorneys at Law, and along with chairing the firm’s litigation department, he focuses his practices on representing policyholders in first-party insurance litigation. The firm’s unique approach is one of the reasons for their success. “If a plaintiff sues their own insurance company and wins, Florida statutes require the insurance company to cover the plaintiff’s attorney fees and costs. Firms traditionally charge clients 30% of the settlement, but this Florida statute enables us to represent the smallest and largest claims, ensuring our clients retain all of the settlement,” explains Lopez. Since opening 13 years ago Marin, Eljaiek, Lopez and Martinez has grown to 16 lawyers, 60 employees and an 18,000 sqft of office in Coconut Grove. “The largest asset that most families own is their house, and when that is being threatened, it can be a very traumatic experience. This is one of the few areas of law on the civil side where I can wake up every morning feeling very good

about what I do, because I’m helping people,” he exclaims. Lopez has also overseen and litigated a wide variety of commercial litigation matters, including FACTA class actions, complex real estate disputes, insurance liability matters and construction litigation cases. His first-party insurance practice ranges in matters from typical homeowner insurance disputes to multi-million-dollar commercial property claims. In addition, he has a broad range of experience in the appellate arena, representing clients throughout Florida’s District Courts of Appeal and the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Lopez and his firm have become involved in several local non-profits and about 6 years ago, a high school friend introduced him to Kristi House. “Marta Martinez was a friend of mine from my high school days and she was on the Board of Directors. I thought it was a great cause especially since it’s helping kids,” explains Lopez. Kristi House treats over 1,100 children a year and operates the Orlowitz-Lee Children’s Advocacy Center responsible for sexual abuse and human sex trafficking cases in all of Miami-Dade County, population 2.6 million. Multidisciplinary teams are utilized to design a treatment program that is individually tailored to the specific needs of the child and family. From providing safe housing, including welfare, Medicare, or food stamps, all the way to child advocacy; there is a coordinated system, linking legal, medical and emotional supports to each family. Multiple community partners include the State Attorney’s Office, the Child Protective Team from the University of Miami, the Rape Treatment Center and Miami-Dade County Police force. “I ended up being on the Board of Directors for three years and our firm has been sponsoring their Gala every year. These kids are the most innocent

victims that you can imagine. To get them into an environment where they can be rehabilitated, feel safe and grant them opportunities to become highly functioning, successful people; I don’t know what better cause we could support,” says Lopez. Mid-last year when Lopez was looking for a new home, he decided on the former Gables Estates President, Rene Guerra’s home. “There’s just not many places in South Florida where you can find 1-acre plus properties on the water, and I love riding my bike in the neighborhood,” explains Lopez. Although he enjoys having his home on the water, Lopez is more of an airplane fanatic than a boater. When his firm began expanding to the Florida west coast it seemed like a practical idea to get a pilot’s license. Ever since, Lopez has been an avid flyer and he recently purchased his very own Daher

22 Life In The Estates • December 2018

TBM 910. “The initial reason I got the plane and my pilot’s license was because we wanted to help more clients on the west coast. I can get to Tampa in 40 minutes, be at a hearing at 9am, and then be back in the office in Coconut Grove by 11am,” says Lopez. “Now my girlfriend Nicole and I love to leave on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings and go to Treasure Cay or Turks and Caicos. The beauty of Miami is that you can jump on an airplane and be in the Bahamas in 30 minutes!” Lopez and his girlfriend Nicole Martin are also excited to be welcoming their first child this coming February. Martin is an accomplished Anesthesiologist and works at the new Universi-

ty of Miami Lennar Center. The couple will be having a boy and are looking forward to building their custom home in Leucadendra to accommodate for the newest member of the family! As Lopez continues to push the boundaries in his practice, he now has one of the largest insurance litigation firms in Florida and he is working on getting his helicopter pilot license. “I like to be challenged so I’m looking to get my helicopter license soon. We’ve been helping a lot of families in the panhandle and we’d like to travel more and possibly open another office in Orlando or Tampa to service the west coast of the state,” says Lopez. Coming from humble beginnings, it is quite inspiring to witness Lopez’s trajectory and it is exciting to see him laying down his roots in our Gables Estates community at this stage of his life. “My father still reminds me almost every time he sees me, that he was the one who convinced me to go to

Law School and what a great decision that was,” exclaims Lopez. We are honored to feature our new neighbor Anthony Lopez in this December issue of Life in the Estates. Marin, Eljaiek, Lopez and Martinez, Attorneys at Law will be the presenting sponsors at Kristi House’s signature annual event, The Kristi House Celebration of Light Gala, at Four Seasons Miami on Saturday, February 2, 2019. And we will be celebrating the arrival of Anthony and Nicole’s first baby boy in that very same month!

I recently enjoyed two amazing experiences I wish to share with you. The first involves the 33rd annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon hosted by AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals Miami, https://community.afpnet.org/miami/ home). Fundraising professionals connect mission and donors. Successful fundraisers build relationships, and through these relationships, donors may be inspired to focus on programs and orgs that resonate with them, ultimately resulting in transformative gifts that can change lives. At the luncheon, I was honored as the Outstanding Philanthropist and joined by Gables Estates neighbor Tony Argiz who was honored as the James W. Mclamore Outstanding Volunteer. Community icon Bob Dickinson received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Coastal Construction and Carnival Foundation were also recognized. I accepted the award in front of my husband Cecil, my two sons Alec and Eric, and many of the fundraising professionals I work with and call friends. The second experience allowed me to share stories and thoughts, from the perspective of a donor, leader of a family foundation, and director of corporate social responsibility. I served on a Philanthropy Panel hosted by The Business Forum Group in Doral led by Pete De La Torre (www.DoralBizForum.com). Maria Alonso, CEO of United Way Miami, gave a brilliant keynote,

enlightening us as to the historic significance of American generosity and altruism, helping to build our democratic nation. I am so proud that American values encompass compassion and philanthropy! Carlos Martinez, compassionate CEO of United Homecare (one of my favorite NGOs, featured in the June issue) and Javier Soto, highly esteemed CEO of the Miami Foundation and founder of Give Miami Day, joined me on the panel. It was a very productive morning as we provided insight to inspire the growing City of Doral to embrace a culture of philanthropy. This month, I wish to highlight Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, globally recognized and admired for its commitment to exploring, explaining and conserving the world of tropical plants. Fairchild Garden is truly a Coral Gables jewel, practically in our backyard! Last year, many of us from Cocoplum communities delighted in an evening at the Garden with Director Dr. Carl Lewis. We learned about the Garden’s work with NASA, growing plants and food in microgravity environments, and about the million orchid project. We have an opportunity to help support the Garden’s important science education and conservation programs by attending Splendor in the Garden Luncheon on Thursday, January 31, and Gala in the Garden on Saturday, January 26. We had lots of fun last year at both the Luncheon and Gala! I invite you to participate. We can put together a table of neighbors and have a wonderful time while helping support Fairchild Garden! For reservations and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Susannah Shubin at sshubin@fairchildgarden.org or online at https://nc.fairchildgarden. org/splendorand https://nc.fairchildgarden.org/gala. Please share your story of philanthropy with me. Send photos and your story to avmilton@bellsouth.net.

Kristi House is dedicated to eradicating child abuse and child sex trafficking—working nationally on solutions, and locally to heal child-victims. Operating the only Child Advocacy Center in Miami-Dade County, Kristi House is responsible for providing trauma-focused therapy and coordinating child-victims’ legal, medical, and social services needs. Gables Estates neighbors Kara Zeder and Anthony Lopez have been long-time supporters of the organization helping make Kristi House one of the top Child Advocacy Centers in the U.S. Founded in 1995 as a private, not-for-profit 501c3 organization, Kristi House provides an integrated solution for families navigating the complex services involved in the healing process, working closely with seven major agency partners. The Center is nationally recognized for its evidenced-based, therapeutic expertise in treating child trauma. All services are provided at no charge, reaching more than 1,000 families a year.

CELEBRATION OF

LIGHT GALA COMING UP FEBRUARY 2, 2019

gables estates neighbors support kristy house

Kristi House is a leader among the 854 Children’s Advocacy Centers in the country, winning federal support for its programs, and having created one of the first programs for child sex trafficking victims in the U.S. based on a Children’s Advocacy Center. KristiHouse has led the field in best practices for young, vulnerable victims of child abuse and sex trafficking. Kristi House’s annual fundraising dinner and auction event was started by volunteer philanthropists when Kristi House was just a few years old and has become the organization’s signature fundraising event. Annually it provides nearly 15% of Kristi House’s operating budget of$4.4 million. In keeping with national best practices for fundraising, less than 25% of the gross proceeds are spent on “putting on” the event. The 2019 event will be The Kristi House Celebration of Light Gala at Four Seasons Miami. We have cause to celebrate! This past year has brought us to a critical juncture in the community consciousness where many have found their voice, along with hope, after enduring the despair and darkness of abuse and assault. We’ll come together at the Celebration of Light Gala to herald the healing progress made and to provide continued support for the safe haven that Kristi House has been for the children since 1995. The evening celebrates the light that, together, we can shed on the dark topic of child abuse and sex trafficking. The elegant evening will feature gourmet cuisine, great cocktails and fine wine, dancing, a luxury auction, and a few surprises. Supporters and attendees at Kristi House’s annual dinner are savvy, well-educated, affluent couples and community leaders who appreciate the finer things in life and love a good time for a good cause. They are especially attracted to exotic vacation getaways and unique experiences, made possible by donations from individual and community supporters. The dinner features outstanding gourmet courses from Four Seasons, with fine wine paired with each course. The guest list is

limited to 325 guests, for a more intimate setting with top-notch service by sommeliers and waiters. Four Seasons and Republic National Distributing Company have been partners and underwriters of this event for more than 10 years. A selection of just 10 packages is offered in the live auction. These live auction items are the crème-de la crème, with special perks that make them the most coveted auction prizes. The luxury trips are fabulous and bid up beyond value, yielding excitement and revenues for Kristi House. The silent auction features luxury goods and fine wines, many of which cannot be bought in stores. Several years ago, Kristi House’s auction went electronic, using personal, hand-held devices so guests are able to see each item and read details without leaving their seats. These devices provide excellent branding opportunities for the very top donors with logos and messages going across the screen and embedded in key places, triggered to come up at key times. A complete large-screen video system is also an integral part of the event so that dazzling images help to convey the excitement of the items to the guests from every vantage point in the room. Video messages from key sponsors are also welcome in this format. We are proud that Gables Estates neighbors are making such a significant impact on child abuse and sex trafficking in South Florida! If you’d like to get more information on Kristi House, please reach out to Jennifer Pena at 305-710-2026 or email: JPena@kristihouse.org.
