Ashley Mouriz Co-Founder of HERA iPhone Cases

The trio launched HERA iPhone cases in November of last year, and they’ve had tremendous success in the South Florida market, even making it on the nationally televised segment “Deals and Steals” on Good Morning America. Ashley who has been a long-time handbag, jewelry and accessories designer, was approached by her aunt Mechet and good friend Fabiana on the idea of creating a hybrid between an iPhone case and a handbag.

iPhone cases just got a lot more fashionable! Thanks to Ashley Mouriz, Mechet Naos, and Fabiana Bond, there is now a stylish case that lets us wear the phone with a strap rather than stuff it into our bulging back pocket. In addition, it includes storage space for credit cards while providing full access to the touchscreen, camera and all control buttons and ports without having to open the case.

30 CoCo Plum Living • December 2018

“Mechet would go to soccer games with her boys holding her chair, umbrella and bullhorn. She was constantly misplacing her cell phone. Fabiana runs restaurants with her husband and it was easy to misplace her handbags with her busy lifestyle. So both of them pushed me to think of something that was a hybrid between a phone case and handbag,” explains Ashley. By mid-2017 Fabiana and Ashley had come up with the initial design which includes a patented zipper pocket for credit cards and cash, along with a fashionable cross-body strap that creates a sophisticated hands-free approach to carrying your phone. By October of last year, Ashley and Mechet had visited engineers, suppliers and fabric dealers in Asia to finalize the production process.

Earlier this summer on June 28, the trio caught a big break and were invited to showcase their product on “Deals and Steals” on Good Morning America. Host Tory Johnson loved the HERA cases: “I love that they’re designed by women and made for women on the go. The floral straps are so fun and cute!” After only five minutes of airtime, Ashley was completely sold out, and then the next three shipping days were hectic, to say the least. “We’re so thankful to Good Morning America! We sold thousands of cases within a few minutes. My mother and father stopped what they were doing and they came to help pack and ship! The hallway in our office building was full of boxes for three days. It was insane,” exclaims Ashley. Cases currently retail between $60-$78 while straps retail between $15-$58. Founders of HERA: Fabiana Bond, Mechet Naos & Ashley Mouriz

you use it the more it adapts to your needs. I currently have six credit cards, a business card and cash in my iPhone 8+ case right now. I don’t even touch my own handbags anymore because I have everything I need in my HERA case.” Abover: HERA Featured on Good Morning America

“Since this is a completely new crossover product between a cell phone case and a handbag, it was challenging to find the right engineer,” says Ashley. They finally partnered with an engineer who produced designer handbags for Coach. The goal in mind was to create something that was beautiful, functional but also durable. The HERA case is the style-savvy way to bring along the essentials without the bother of a handbag. The ladies chose a synthetic vegan leather for the cases which gives the product durability and also functionality without sacrificing quality, comfort, or aesthetics. “Our phones fall on the floor, get wet; they go through heat and cold weather. So the vegan leather acts exactly like traditional leather, but won’t stretch or get ruined if it gets wet,” explains Ashley. And you might be surprised how much storage the secret zipper pocket can hold.”It’s like a tight pair of jeans, so the more

32 CoCo Plum Living • December 2018

Phones aren’t just phones anymore, and the HERA straps make it possible to treat our iPhone cases as true fashion accessories. Each case comes with a matching strap and you can always purchase additional straps to match your wardrobes. If you want the Beyonce look, you can add Blaire strap; for a more forward style, the Vanessa studded strap is perfect. “We wanted women to be able to accessorize it and make it their own. The younger generation usually goes for the longer 60” strap because it gives them more room for their selfies. Our new collection of straps will be completely adjustable so there will only be one size, making it way more convenient for our clients,” says Ashley.

February of 2019 will be a huge month for the trio, as they will have HERA featured on QVC’s Fashion Week. Mechet will be presenting the HERA cases, and they will have a five to seven-minute primetime segment on the network! “QVC Headquarters is incredible. We were completely shocked at how large the market for television retail space still is. QVC’s community of loyal customers completely blew our minds,” says Ashley. Growing up in Islands of Cocoplum, Ashley has always had a passion for fashion and design. It’s amazing to see how her talents, dreams, and hard work have come together to create such an innovative and groundbreaking product. We wish Ashley Mouriz the best of luck and we look forward to seeing HERA on QVC! We’d highly encourage you to support our neighbor Ashley Mouriz! If you’re interested in checking out HERA’s product line, visit www. HeraCases.com. Ashley has created a 20% off product code for any residents who may want to purchase HERA cases for the holiday season. Product Code: Cocoplum December 2018 • CoCo Plum Living

rom our nation’s capital to “The City Beautiful” arrives Fiola Miami, the second location of Michelin-starred, Italian restaurant Fiola in Washington, D.C., coveted by celebrities, politicians, and power players alike. Conceptualized by critically-acclaimed Chef Fabio Trabocchiand his wife/business partner Maria, the pair is thrilled to extend their dining room to the community through family tradition, worldclass hospitality, award-winning contemporary cuisine, global wines, andhand-crafted cocktails. Together, their unity of cultures makes the expansion into Miami a seamless endeavor. Since 2011, the dynamic duo has built a culinary empire in Washington, D.C. that includes Fiola, Del Mar, Fiola Mare, two locations of Sfoglina Pasta House, and now Fiola Miami. To reflect the best of Italy’s regional gastronomy entwined with elements that evoke the “Magic City’s” innate style, Fiola Miami’s menu presents contemporary interpretations of Italian classics.

I recently enjoyed two amazing experiences I wish to share with you. The first involves the 33rd annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon hosted by AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals Miami, https://community.afpnet.org/miami/home). Fundraising professionals connect mission and donors. Successful fundraisers build relationships, and through these relationships, donors may be inspired to focus on programs and orgs that resonate with them, ultimately resulting in transformative gifts that can change lives. At the luncheon, I was honored as the Outstanding Philanthropist and joined by Gables Estates neighbor Tony Argiz who was honored as the James W. Mclamore Outstanding Volunteer. Community icon Bob Dickinson received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Coastal Construction and Carnival Foundation were also recognized. I accepted the award in front of my husband Cecil, my two sons Alec and Eric, and many of the fundraising professionals I work with and call friends. The second experience allowed me to share stories and thoughts, from the perspective of a donor, leader of a family foundation, and director of corporate social responsibility. I served on a Philanthropy Panel hosted by The Business Forum Group in Doral led by Pete De La Torre (www.DoralBizForum.com). Maria Alonso, CEO of United Way Miami, gave a brilliant keynote, enlightening us as to the historic significance of American generosity and altruism, helping to build our democratic nation. I am so proud that American values encompass compassion and philanthropy! Carlos Martinez, compassionate CEO of United Homecare (one of my favorite NGOs, featured in the June issue) and Javier

Soto, highly esteemed CEO of the Miami Foundation and founder of Give Miami Day, joined me on the panel. It was a very productive morning as we provided insight to inspire the growing City of Doral to embrace a culture of philanthropy. This month, I wish to highlight Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, globally recognized and admired for its commitment to exploring, explaining and conserving the world of tropical plants. Fairchild Garden is truly a Coral Gables jewel, practically in our backyard! Last year, many of us from Cocoplum communities delighted in an evening at the Garden with Director Dr. Carl Lewis. We learned about the Garden’s work with NASA, growing plants and food in microgravity environments, and about the million orchid project. We have an opportunity to help support the Garden’s important science education and conservation programs by attending Splendor in the Garden Luncheon on Thursday, January 31, and Gala in the Garden on Saturday, January 26. We had lots of fun last year at both the Luncheon and Gala! I invite you to participate. We can put together a table of neighbors and have a wonderful time while helping support Fairchild Garden! For reservations and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Susannah Shubin at sshubin@fairchildgarden.org or online at https://nc.fairchildgarden.org/splendorand https://nc.fairchildgarden.org/gala. Please share your story of philanthropy with me. Send photos and your story to avmilton@bellsouth.net.

The financial goal for 2019 is $100,000 in scholarship funds and the deadline for donations is March 15, 2019. The first part of the initiative will be to establish a committee composed of Islands of Cocoplum Board members and donors. That committee will review the scholarships applications and select the scholarship recipients for the year. The next step will be to introduce the scholarship recipients to residents in the community. This will take place through an acceptance ceremony at the IOC Clubhouse, along with an article in the Cocoplum Magazine, in addition to other media outlets. The article will include relevant information about the students including their background and academic interests, encouraging the entire community to follow up on the progress of the students throughout their college years. “We are designing the program for two kinds of donors; those who

would like to take an active role in the lives of the students as well as those who would like to take a more passive role,” explains Matt. “We understand our residents have busy lives, so we have opportunities in place for residents who would like to donate and stay informed about the progress of the students. We will also have opportunities for donors who would like to take a more active role in mentoring students and offering internships or vocational opportunities,” explains Martinez. An overview and timeline of the initiative can be found below: The IOC Philanthropy Committee will raise scholarship funds from homeowners each year • The IOC Philanthropy Committee will provide a list of IOC business owners who would consider participating in this program by offering summer internships to scholarship recipients

• The IOC Philanthropy Committee will serve as a conduit for scholarship recipients to be considered for summer internship opportunities directly with IOC business owners • Coral Gables High School will draft a scholarship application and market the opportunity to its students • IOC Board in conjunction with scholarship donors will review applications, interview the final candidates and select students to receive the award • IOC Board and Coral Gables High School staff will determine the amount of the scholarships based on the annual donations • Contribution deadline: March 15 • Application Deadline: April 1 • Announce Scholarship Recipients: May 1

We are proud to support the IOC partnership with Coral Gables High School and we encourage any residents who would like to take part in this initiative to reach out to Matt Martinez at matt@beaconhillpg.comfor more information. The Coral Gables Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and will be administering all donations for this cause.

The Initiative Will Provide Scholarships & Vocational Opportunities to Rising Seniors Exactly three miles due north from Cartagena Plaza, there is a public high school that was designed to house 2,800 students for the affluent Coral Gables community. Today, the school has over 3,200 students, and with 76% of the students on free or reduced lunch, the students aren’t exactly affluent. Actually, a recent top-performing student who is attending FIU on a full scholarship had been homeless for all four years of high school. Despite those challenges, she still managed to graduate with honors, and although the student had numerous options to attend several prestigious universities, the family could not afford out-of-state tuition and housing.

“I’ve driven by the school countless times, but only recently did I realize the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of so many local families,” explains Matt Martinez, Islands of Cocoplum President and Chair of the Philanthropy Committee. With a minority rate of over 90%, a largely underprivileged student population, and overpopulated classrooms, Coral Gables High School faces significant challenges. Even with those challenges, however, over 94% of seniors attend university and the IB Program is one of the top performing programs in the county.

This upcoming 2019 year, Islands of Cocoplum Philanthropy Committee has decided to partner with Coral Gables High School to help local, high-performing, underprivileged students attend university and acquire internship and vocational opportunities with business owners throughout our own community. “We are offering a unique opportunity to help rising seniors pay their college tuition through scholarships as well as gain valuable work experience with summer internships, thus providing scholarship recipients with a direct path to future employment opportunities upon graduation from college,” explains Martinez. Coral Gables High School Principal, Adolfo Costa, is excited to partner with Islands of Cocoplum for the new initiative. “We believe that opportunities for students to interact with business owners are enormously beneficial. Currently, there are very few vehicles that can facilitate these relationships and our partnership with Islands of Cocoplum would have a tremendous impact in the lives of our students.” “Our goal is to target this initiative toward rising seniors who are economically disadvantaged yet show academic promise. We want donors to be actively engaged with the process of selecting scholarship recipients and ultimately know the students who have had successful internships with business owners,” says Martinez. “The hope is to facilitate the process of giving back to our community in a meaningful way.” December 2018 • CoCo Plum Living

Massage Envy South Miami Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary Husband and wife team, Wayne Retsema and Lourdes Martinez, are celebrating their 10-year anniversary of Massage Envy in South Miami! Having served many of our Cocoplum, Islands of Cocoplum and Tahiti Beach families for the last decade, the couple has just completed a massive renovation to their Massage Envy location, bringing a fresh new look, upgraded state-of-the-art equipment, and the same exceptional service that our neighbors have grown accustomed to over the years. Although now owners of the wildly popular Brickell, South Miami and Country Walk locations, Wayne and Lourdes were unlikely candidates for a Massage Envy franchise. Wayne had been a famous radio personality for over 20 years and Lourdes a successful residential realtor when in 2007 the couple found themselves rethinking their careers. “It was the height of the housing market collapse and so many people were under stress because of the economy. I thought,

‘Wow, I really need a massage more than ever,’ and that’s when the idea hit me,” recalls Lourdes. Within a few months, Wayne and Lourdes had purchased the Massage Envy franchise for South Miami and found their ideal location on the corner of Red Road and 72ndstreet. “Our family thought we were crazy to open up a company in the middle of a recession, but we really believed in the importance of health and wellness. Looking back today we are so appreciative of our Coral Gables and South Miami community for believing in us and supporting us the entire way,” exclaims Lourdes. The Massage Envy brand, which is the largest purveyor of massage services in the world, continues to grow in its reach as well as the services they offer. “It’s amazing that more than 50% of all massages that are administered in the U.S. are done so by Massage Envy locations,” says Lourdes. Of course, the brand offers the most robust selection of massag-

es including: Swedish, trigger point therapy, deep tissue, sports massage, reflexology, cranial sacral therapy, geriatric, and prenatal massages. But most impressive perhaps is the continuing education and intense screening that therapists must complete as an ongoing process. “Our therapist must undergo schooling and re-certification in their massage specialty each year, and we run annual background checks every six months,” explains Wayne, “We want our clients to have access to the most advanced techniques in the industry, along with the understanding that they can trust every single one of our therapists.” Through the years Massage Envy has used test markets, such as Wayne and Lourdes’ South Miami location, to expand its services into facials and advanced skin care treatments, as well as total body stretches. “10 years ago, when we opened our South Miami location we were one of the first clinics in the country to introduce facials and other skin care treatments. Today this is one of the most popular services we offer,” explains Wayne. time and help reveal healthy, glowing skin immediately. As Massage Envy continues to push the envelope, they have has just rolled out a new partnership with the clinically proven Jan Marini and Obagi skin care lines. “These brands give us an even more clinical dimension. We can now offer results-driven and comprehensive skin care treatments that enhance the client experience,” says Wayne. One of the newest treatments that Massage Envy has developed is the Streto Method. Combining over 15 years of massage expertise with the latest stretch research, the total

Method to help relieve stress and ease muscle tension. “Since we are health and wellness fanatics, we love how Massage Envy continues to push the boundaries and offer services that are on the cutting edge,” says Lourdes. Today, Lourdes is one of the most fervent supporters of non-profits and local charities in South Miami. Lourdes has partnered up with several of our Cocoplum neighbors to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation and the Cancerlink Foundation, among others. “One of the things I’m most excited and proud about is giving back to the community. We feel the support from the community and it feels so gratifying to be able to give back,” exclaims Lourdes. The couple loves working together in the family business and even has added their daughter Madison to the team. “Madison has been working at the South Miami clinic since she was 14 years old, and it’s very special to us because now she manages the location, which happens to be one of the top performing clinics in the state,” says Lourdes. Wayne and Lourdes continue to expand into other sectors of health and wellness, as they will be opening three acupuncture clinics in 2019. “Modern Acupuncture is the first franchise acupuncture business in the world. There are just under 40 locations around the country and it follows the same business model as Massage Envy,” says Wayne. The couple explains that there’s not many affordable and convenient acupuncture clinics out there where clients can just drop in at any time and get their treatment quickly and professionally. Their first Modern Accupuncture location will be opening in Pinecrest Village near the Whole Foods

on 104thstreet and the couple ensures that clients will be able to experience the same level of service as their Massage Envy locations. Additional South Miami and Doral locations are in the works as well! We are proud to feature our Sponsors of the Month, Wayne and Lourdes, in this December issue of Cocoplum Living, and we hope you stop by to say “hello” at their Massage Envy in South Miami or their upcoming Modern Acupuncture location in Pinecrest!
