mise en place: Duluth Middle School Type: Middle School Duration: 20 weeks Year: 2019 Class: Capstone Studio Software: Rhinoceros, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator “Mise en place” is a French culinary phrase meaning “putting in place.” All the ingredients are measured, cut, peeled, sliced, grated, etc. before one starts cooking. The Duluth Middle School transforms the old traditional school into a facility focused on the unique needs of 21st-century middle school students. The school is divided into small learning communities to help ease students from a middle school environment into one more similar to colleges with increased independence and changing classes through project-based learning opportunities. Mise en place, prepares students to become leaders of holistic problem solvers at times of increasingly unavoidable facts about climate change, population growth, global food crisis, and scarcity of resources by embracing the innate curiosity of children through the natural systems of the world. Middle school students undergoing puberty is one of the most important stages of life seeking for one’s identity and passion as middle school students straddle the line between childhood and adulthood – learning what their interests are and who they will be.

Pyschosocial Stance of Middle Schoolers

Transparency throughout the building not only helps bring daylight deep into the space but also provide a safe environment for learning. Transparency between the classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, and the diningarts facility allows students to connect and explore from others. In addition to creating healthy interior spaces, the exterior space is designed for students to socialize and run off stress before and after school. The school administration and security overlooks the entire facility to ensure a safe environment. The end product is a cheerfully daylit school with the warmth of a heavy timber structure, which fosters a sense of community and curiosity where students can learn and grow.

Panoramic Safety and Security

- Utilizing existing site conditions to preserve the old parking infrastructure and minimize sitework.

- Centralized administration office serving as the main gateway to school entrance for safety and security.

- The courtyard allows natural daylight access to all classrooms and spaces in the facility.

- The office is elevated in a radial form for panoramic view over the entire school and student activities.

- Connecting the green belt language of the site into the spine of the school.

- Elevated space creates void underneath the floor which invites the users into the main circulation of the programs.

- The courtyard is used for urbanfarming.

Classrooms : Transparency and Prospect Prospect: Integrated Folding Glass walls are used throughout the learning environments, connecting them with one and other with the outside environment. The first floor allows learners to directly connect visually with outdoor curricular activities while the second floor allows learners to look down into the spaces below.

Transparency: The operable glass walls provides opportunities for learners to preview all transactions and collaboratively cross each other’s learning environments. The classrooms are programmed, planned and designed to mediate independent, one-to-one, small group, and large-group interactions with additional aid with flexible wheeled furnitures that can be fixed together UP

courtyard, and the West Wing can be observed.

By centralizing the administration office with the teacher’s space progresses the school from being a teacher-centric to a learner-centric environment. It does not only allow teacher’s to have their own personalized spaces but also allows opportunities for two or more classes to work together. UP

Flooring System Integrated to Structure System The mass timber flooring system connected with non-structural concrete creates stronger strength and stiffness to the structure. By combining the flexibility of wood and the stiffness of concrete contributes its spanning capabilities and absorbing vibrations.

Salvaged Lumber Recycled From Demolition

Passive Shading Broad eaves and vertical louvers provide shelter and passive shading to reduce solar radiation.

To achieve sustainable construction and waste management, salvaged two-by-fours and two-by-sixes recycled during the demolition process and near-by construction projects are used to create Nail Laminated Floors nailed with new two-by-eight certified lumbers.

Elevated Administration Admin and faculty space not only encourages collaboration among teachers, but also reduces the sense of ownership of one classroom, an important step in creating a student-centered curriculum.

Transitional Landscape Landscapes leading to recreation, social life, and small-scale food cultivation

The Tower

is a solution to the massive embodied energy in the American Diet.

Y-District is an urban design project

Why is it so tall?

for the city of Savannah, GA reimagining how we could live in the 21st Century. This project focuses on examining the current problems of fragmented lifestyles in a city and envisioning a “sustainable ubiquitous” urban fabric. Y-District reconciles the segregated social disconnection between Yamacraw Village and Historic District of Savannah through evidence-based design, human-centered experience, sustainability, affordability, and innovative mobility.

Okay, but why would you decided to put such a large tower in the middle of a city?

The average American meal travels 1,500 miles from Farm-to-Plate. Currently we are generating 10 kcal of fossil energy to provide 1kcal energy of food.

There is no way that is true... why would we allow that to happen?

Urban Farming Component

For an example there is a sugar farm in Hawaii that ships unproccessed sugar to New York to be packaged and then back to Hawaii in sugar packets to be consumed. So if you travel 1 mile to a coffee shop, the sugar in the packet could of travelled 2,000 miles.

We used the tower on a base approach to our building design. We kept a 2-3 floor (50-60ft) base height to keep a datum with the contextual Savannah. The towers are then set-back minimum 15ft to be perceived less as a street wall hovering above pedestrians to improve the street experience.

?

An Urban Farm That is an 150’ x 150’ @ 37 stories can feed up to 20,000 people.

15 feet set-back to match Savannah’s historic district streetwall experience.

A high-density area is about creating a more livable community, one that has a lower carbon footprint and is overall a more enjoyable place to be. To create a walkable place without relying on the automobile. To generate this high density requires building up, but how much density is not sustainable? The more people we can have per square foot of building space saves materials, ecological area, and promotes local economies. Having too many people can require external assistance. If this becomes a burden to surrounding infrastructure this should be classified as an unsustainable density.

Maximize natural daylight.

Maximize outdoor spaces. Rotation to enlarge distance between exterior walls

Savannah Port

: An economical boom for Savannah and the entire state of Georgia.

Those SHIPS ARE HUGE!

That has to bring in tons of money for the city of Savannah.

They have to be! They carry around 12,000 thousand shipping containers total a weight near 600,000 tons.

Absolutely! The Savannah port is the 37th largest in the world, with plans to make it the 7th largest by 2030, and the third largest by 2040. At that point it would be handling 30 million shipping containers and employing a little under 3 million people across Georgia.

Graft: Timber in the City Type: Mixed Use(Residential, Commercial, Day-care) Duration: 10 weeks Year: 2018 Class: Architecture Studio IV Software: Rhinoceros, Revit, V-Ray, Photoshop, Illustrator

City is like a living organism. It is born, it is raised and developed. It has its prime moment thus followed by decay. Eventually dying. Reviving a city and leading it to a resilient environment is the architect’s responsibility yet their role. The concept GRAFT is to create a composition appearing as a pivotal point in the area’s new esplanade and Queens plaza master plan. It is located at the edge of commercial district transitioning into residential district. GRAFT symbolizes the symbiosis of a tree setting its root to a Place; embracing the local community to the fast developing area by providing opportunities. The timber presents the equity in ecology by creating a sustainable environment. The high rise of its structure resembles the potential of timber structure as a viable replacement of modern day construction technology which is the major cause of climate change. The aim for this project is to design an innovative urban center in the Long island city area which incorporates Biophilic design in an urban context. GRAFT will employ various built in systematic environment strategies to integrate timber as a unifying element through the various programmatic expressions of an urban center. A progressive approach of incorporating biophilic design in all three realms of the project which comprises of community wellness, living & early child hood education.

1. Pre-fab and flatpack The modular materials of the project are prefabricated at local timber facility. Local construction processes creates jobs for the regional economy.

2. Deliver Due to possibilities at the river, timbers are delivered not only by trucks but also flexible by barges at the East River.

3. Unpack Flat pack assembly boxes are unpacked on site. Materials are prepped and staged under a temporary structure to control environmental conditions.

4. Assemble & Stack Modular mass timber components assembled on site. Higher workability with lighter construction material. Faster construction and lesser noise during assembly.

This number is only expected to rise faster than before. Where borders were once ambiguous and invisible, symbolic boundaries between countries have now emerged as physical structures. Today, such boundaries are demarcated by architectural interventions of violence, designed to keep families, neighbors, and entire communities apart. Architects have long been the creative yet destructive hand for oppressive political states. Walls between borders are designed to incite fear, which is in turn reflected in the hearts of the people divided by them. As designers, turning our back on this phenomena makes us part of the problem and part of the wall. We can, however, change the way borders are addressed moving forward. In place of division, we can foster unity; in place of walls, we can build communities. Every Man’s Land aims to reconnect communities divided by borders, to offer a sense of ownership, belonging, and symbiosis between border communities and the environment around them.

Site Context With cities becoming denser by the year, new solutions need to be drawn up with respect to housing, jobs and education. Our project aims to provide answers to these wicked problems, by providing citizens of both countries a means of dignified and sustainable living. Every Man’s Land reimagines border conflict zones as vibrant ecosystems of cross-cultural interactions, where two countries steward a new era of renewable energy reform and global connectivity.

- Residential - Job/training - School - Community Space - Commercial

Floor Plates - Vertical Urban Farming More than either a wall or a tower, Every Man’s Land functions as a network, stitching the unique proposed structures and existing border communities together. Through the inclusion of a Hyperloop transportation system, east-west travel for both the U.S. and Mexico is facilitated, positioning the project as the spine of borderland communities.

Foldable Structures - Everyman’s Land Border

The expanse and orientation of the structure offer ideal opportunities to harness wind and solar energy at a significant scale. Such infrastructure will drastically diminish the use of fossil fuels in surrounding cities and towns of both countries, taking some of them off the grid entirely. The structures will leverage the project so that it helps to transform design and purpose of traditional walls to the construction of energy infrastructure along the border. Reconsiderations of the border wall and recreation of social improvements will serve as a catalyst of positive economic value to the border community.

According to a new study by Kerry Emanuel, a prominent hurricane researcher at MIT, found that contrary to previous findings, tropical cyclones are likely to become both stronger and more frequent in the years to come. Recently, Hurricane Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico and the people and the country was heavily damaged. LA CAPA : THE CLOAK is an airport located at San Juan, Peurto Rico reconstructed from the existing airport Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport. The airport is dedicated to government officials and NGO organization personnel to be able to respond quickly at times of crisis such as hurricanes or other natural disasters in the region.

Puerto Rico being United States’ territory, is the hub to reach aid to regions in central Americas. With the persistent prediction of future coming hurricanes, THE CLOAK will not only serve for daily airport operations but also training Rescue Teams and NGO volunteers in quick response to act with field manual at the time of crisis. It’s site location which is right adjacent to the Crowley Terminal Office, seaport of Puerto Rico, where most of the country’s imports are processed, and the Puerto Rico Convention Center, creates significance to the program for Government Officials and leaders to quickly respond and mobilize during emergencies and hold strategic plans at the command center.

The concept of this project is approached through investigating the wind of the site and the fundamentals of aerodynamics in studying the reaction mechanism of the wind force. CLOAK, symbolizing fabrication, implies the beauty of elegance of fabric when taken into the air, how it can serve as protection(embracing the community at crisis), and define one cultures’ identity through resilience.
