01 | THE KOLAM FLOWS INTO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY ARCH 2016: Figuration and Deep Decoration - Second Year Studio Partner: Anthony Iacobucci Critic: James Park Fall 2021 This project takes the Indian Kolam—a ornamental and ceremonial floor artform and pattern—and first dissects it into its respective figures and then rebuilds it through a modern lens. Ultimately proposing a Music Technology Design and Research Academy for northeast San Francisco, the Kolam themes like movement, flow, layering, and depth, remain present throughout the project.

Figures are extracted from precedent Kolam patterns and are then transformed. Figures become paired with each other to form larger “modules”. Modules are configured into “sheets” in 1 to 2 proportions, then those sheets are thickened and laser printed onto chipboard and explored in the physical world. Physical compositions form the foundation towards a final design, while the program is designed to communicate within the sheets.

6 Kolam patterns with movement, flow, layering, and depth were selected and traced. 18 total figures, 3 per drawing, were then extracted with a variety of “single line” and “double line” figures to reflect the natural 4 to 5 line pattern within the Kolam.

Music is a fundamental human trait that has been around for as long as humans themselves. From basic forms like primal instruments to today’s more complex electronic and programmable instruments and theories, music itself has shifted its meaning over time. Today, those musical tools are as accessible as ever and technology plays an ever-increasing role in the world of music. Hoping to intertwine the cultural history of music to its modern context in today’s society, the academy explores Music Technology— specifically, study and design related to audio properties, musical history, instruments, tools, methods, and designs. We ask ourselves, what do our current tools do and how can we design and invent better tools for the future? Located in northeast San Francisco, directly next to Embarcadero Plaza­—an area that has hosted concerts since the 1980s—our site is the perfect place for a music technology design and research academy.

Designing a maker-space duplex home to replace the empty lot at 650 Gaskill St. SE. in Cabbagetown, a historic industrial neighborhood located just east of Atlanta. Understanding and diagramming zoning restrictions and applying that knowledge to design a proposal for the site. The duplex home is designed specifically for a couturier and photographer and has intertwined creative spaces and respective private spaces.

Designing a college campus pavilion that responds to its immediate environment and is easily accessible. Exploring paper-folding methods to form “panels” or “modules” that can be repeated to form the pavilion’s main structure.

Placed on a grassy area on the north face of Georgia Tech’s Price Gilbert Memorial Library, students can relax, study, or simply hangout at the pavilion.

Mapping and diagramming Canton, Georgia to find possible underlying patterns, trends, and organization within the city and surrounding land.

Mapping and diagramming the surrounding area reveals the sprawling nature of Canton, as well as where private and public spaces are defined. The gradual and smooth slopes provide a consistent change in elevation and the organizational layout of downtown Canton is flexible and fairly natural within the first map. On a local level, the neighborhood view reveals the organized yet casual nature of the houses and land.

08 | Analyzing and Diagramming the National Cathedral of Ghana ARCH 2020 : Media + Modeling 2 || October 2021

Using primarily grasshopper—crafting representative 2D and 3D parti diagrams, modeling the defining structures and systems.

The National Cathedral of Ghana, designed by David Adjaye and his firm “Adjaye Associates,” serves as a religious, democratic, and traditional symbol of Ghanian culture and society. It’s roof structure is heavily symbolic to represent the “asesedwa”—the traditional Ghanian stool. Located in Accra, the capital of Ghana, the project will have a 5,000 seat auditorium and be surrounded by 5.5 hectares (roughly 13.5 acres) of gardens. The space will serve as a “worship and community hub”, ultimately serving as a church, music school, art gallery, and bible museum. The project has not been constructed yet, but it was initially designed in 2018.
