What We Think.

“Nobody’s denying that climate change is real. We’re way beyond that. So, we’ll spare you the lecture since you got this far...

Being conscious, or sustainable, or planet-first... it’s been a core principle of COAT’s since the business was born in 2020. Not because it’s a hot topic (bad pun), or a buzzword, or literally everybody’s marketing campaign... but because sensible people with principles don’t damage the planet.

In fact, sensible people do what they can to make changes for good.

We’re not ones for fads or gimmicks - we just make great paint and give back more to the planet than we take. That’s it.

Industry change starts with transparency and holding everyone to the new way. We’re spelling out exactly how we do things at COAT, and the decisions we’ve made - so people know who they’re buying from, and our industry pals can feel the pressure to level-up.

So, thanks for being curious”

TL;DR?

Our conscious approach, in a nutshell...

100% MADE TO ORDER.

We’re the only major paint player to mix exclusively to customer order. No overproduction, no waste.

THE ONLY CLIMATE POSITIVE PAINT CO. & B CORP CERTIFIED

Independently certified for having measured, minimised, and double carbon offset all Scope 1-3 emissions through UN Gold Standard environmental projects. Understand impact, reverse the tide.

UNIQUE RECYCLING PROGRAMME.

Customers can return paint tins to us for 100% reprocessing. That’s a first. Zero-waste goals.

Mission.

WHY WE EXIST, AND HOW WE DO THINGS.

Mission.

This past few years have changed our view on plenty of things. Our time, our relationships, and even our core values. Most people have found themselves with more time at home, to think about their home life and environment. Decorating is about creating spaces people love, that lastand COAT wants the planet to last too.

COAT Paints launched in 2020, mid pandemic, with a goal to simplify the clunky paint buying experience and give the luxury paint market a swift kick into the modern world. Perhaps the swiftest of those kicks came in the field of planet conscious business - which we think is still lacking in our industry.

“We’ve renovated several houses over the years, and trekking to and from the DIY store for paint tester pots and tiny colour chips left us bored and generally out of time” says Rob Abrahams, co-founder at COAT.

“There’s a screaming lack of environmental consciousness to the paint brands and products out therewith way too much stock on shelves and waste as part of the painting process and supply chain.”

COAT is uniquely focused on simple, smart solutions for choosing colour and minimising environmental impact. “Simplifying things for people, and making the choosing and decorating process super quick and easy is such a big part of the COAT experience” says Rob Green, co-founder at COAT “but beyond that simplicity is a deeprooted mission to make a positive impact on the planet, and society. Not only through our entirely water-based and low-toxin paintsbut through our broader focus as a regenerative business, where we can stand proudly on every ethical decision we make.”

COAT is the first Climate Positive Paint Company in the world, which means the business has taken responsibility for all it’s Scope 1-3 carbon emissions, and offsets unavoidable emissions by contributing double the amount to UN Gold Standard environmental offsetting projects through partner accreditor Carbon Jacked.

meaning of Luxury has evolved” says Rob. “Luxury is about doing good for yourself and for the world. It’s balanced, and democratic. COAT Paints are a symbol of that shift in generational perception and environmental responsibility.”

COAT is proudly championing The New Way to paint that’s simple, conscious, and rooted in doing right for our generation and the next.

“The

Unique Principles.

OUR GUIDING LIGHT ON DOING THINGS RIGHT.

for something - or fall for anything”

1: ZERO-WASTE PRODUCTION

Not unlike fast-fashion, most major paint companies produce colours in huge quantities and drive demand top-down. The industry contributes waste itself, with millions of litres scrapped each year due to overproduction.

“Don’t make things that people don’t want”

2: CLOSED-LOOP RECYCLING

Making smart material choices is the starting point for a low-impact environmental business. 100% of our products, packaging, and anything we touch is fully recyclable - and the majority is recycled too. We’re the first and only paint company to offer direct returns of unused/leftover products for 100% recycling, re-processing, and re-engineering. “Re-use, recycle, send nothing to landfill”

SENSIBLE, GIMMICK-FREE THINKING

3: KIND PRODUCTS, THAT LAST

Unlike some, all COAT paints are 100% water-based, low VOC and without any nasty solvents. They’re animal cruelty free too of course. Substance comes before style for us, and we’ll make sensible material choices that prioritise timelessness and longevity over fast-fashion.

“Make kind products that last”

4: HYPER-LOCAL FOCUCS

One sure-fire way to minimise environmental impact is to source and create things close to home. COAT paints are sourced and manufactured in the UK, and in Belgium for European customers - to avoid long shipping distances. We also ship direct-to-door for all customers, using Carbon Neutral delivery partners - cutting out unnecessary car and lorry journeys.

“Source, produce, and ship with minimal miles”

5: REGENERATIVE BUSINESS

To sustain isn’t enough. COAT is the first and only Climate Positive Paint Company. This means we remove more carbon than our impact. More than double, actually. Combined with our zero-waste production and loop recycling system, we’re giving back more than we take.

“Give back more to the world than we take”

NOTROCKETSCIENCE, JUST GOOD DECISIONS

1.

Zero-Waste Production.

“Don’t make things that people don’t want...”

100% Made to Order.

UNLIKE OTHERS, WE DON’T MAKE PAINT UNTIL SOMEONE ORDERS IT.

Most paint companies batch-produce paint in large quantities, in different colours, only for it to sit on shelves in stores or warehouses. Customers then take multiple trips to-and-from the stores to pick out a dusty tin at best - and at worst, this paint goes unsold and wasted. But not COAT. We produce paint to order in only the colours people want, and send it straight to home via Carbon Neutral delivery partners. That’s less waste, and less car trips.

Only the colours people want, and zero waste production.

Fresh Paints.

Who wants some old paint off a dusty shelf? Paint made to be stocked often has more nasty preservatives, and is more likely to split and separate whilst it waits for an owner. So for that luxuriously smooth pour and near-zero VOC’s, we’re 100% freshly mixed for you.

The COAT made to order difference...

ClosedLoop Recycling 2.

“Re-use, recycle, send nothing to landfill”

Smart Packaging.

Online business has driven an increase in packaging use. Whether keeping things simple with infinitely recyclable paint tins - or using unbleached cardboard and biodegradable inksevery single piece of COAT’s packaging is consciously sourced and easily recyclable.

PAINT TINS: no gimmicks, round tins are infinitely recyclable and easy to access for every last drop.

BOXES: unbleached, mostly recycled and 100% recyclable.

FITMENTS: Protective shipping moulds are 100% recycled and recyclable.

BAGS: Essential for transit, we use renewable organic cotton, not fossilfuelled plastics.

LITERATURE: Any printed materials are 100% recycled and biodegradable.

STIRRERS: Wooden stir sticks are FSC certified and usable for years.

Paint Recycling.

2 million litres of excess paint is sent to landfill every year in the UK. (50% of it is probably in your shed or under-stairs cupboard, right!?).

Paint tins are infinitely recyclable, so they’re by far the best vessel for the environment. Forget small plastic pouches and washing paint down the sink...

Any COAT customer can send back their empty tins or unused paint, and we’ll process them fully for recycling. That means the tins, handles, and most importantly any excess paint is recycled.

We work to turn all excess or waste paint into a new recycled paint product - so there’s nothing going to waste. That’s zero to landfill.

Step 1, only make paint people want. Step 2, take back tins and dregs for 100% recycling. That’s closing the loop on industry waste.

3.

Kind Products - That Last.

“Make kind products that last”

Kind Paints.

Not all paint is water-based and Low VOC like ours. Paints with high levels of VOCs still use heavy solvents and harmful chemicals. No thanks. We’re constantly pushing limits to make quality longlasting paints that are kind to people, and the planet.

The entire COAT Paints range is:

Made to orders (zero waste)

Water-based (no solvents)

Low VOC (nasty chemical compounds)

Zero VOC pigments

Locally sourced and made (UK & BE)

100% Animal cruelty free

Child Safe Certified (EN71-3)

Pet Safe Certified (EN71-3)

Indoor Air Comfort A+ (Eurofins)

Clever Little Samples.

Typical paint tester pots are wasteful and usually not recyclable. People buy loads of them, and they knock around in draws or go straight to landfill.

There’s no world where paint tester pots make sense.

So we changed the game with COAT Peel & Stick Samples. 95% less waste, 100% recyclable, and 110% smarter thinking.

Any conscious business thinks hard about single-use plastics, and our Samples are the pack leader when it comes to practical and responsible choices:

95% less waste than a conventional 200ml tester pot (our swatches use <10ml of paint)

100% Adhesive free (no solvents)

100% Recyclable PET material

100% Colour accurate

We’re about creating spaces to love, that feel good on plenty of levels...

Made-To-Last Supplies.

There’s plastic everywhere when it comes to paint tools. But like tester pots, they’re often non-recyclable virgin plastic and destined for landfill. Not good enough. COAT supplies are made from sustainably sourced bamboo, recyclable metal and recycled filaments - for a perfectly luxe finish that’s kinder than plastics.

What’s more, COAT supplies are engineered to last a lifetime.

Paint Brushes - infinitely farm-able fast-growing bamboo handles, re-used bristles and sturdy recyclable metal.

Paint Roller Frames - infinitely farmable fast-growing bamboo handles, and sturdy recyclable metal.

Paint Roller Sleeves - 100% recyclable when used with water-based paints like COAT.

Metal Tray - 100% recyclable, sturdy, and made to last.

4.

Hyper-Local Focus.

“Source, produce, and ship with minimal miles”

Local Sourcing & Production.

One way we can reduce carbon emissions overall is by eradicating unnecessary transportation. The biggest impact isn’t individuals, but companies air-freighting things all over the world. We keep it simple, with local sourcing, local mixing for each market, and carbon neutral deliveries to door:

Tin and raw materials and from UK and EU suppliers

Manufactured in the UK

Coloured and mixed locally - in Suffolk for UK orders, and Brussels for EU orders

Delivered directly to door via Carbon Neutral delivery partners (UK)

Direct Delivery.

It’s boring, but so important.

We deliver paint directly to your home.

Think less lorries hauling paint to different store locations - and less cars on the road. Think less ships and planes getting the raw materials over too, like some manufacturers.

What’s more, our chosen delivery partners in the UK are Carbon Neutral with a modern fleet including electric vehicles.

Regenerative Business. 5.

“Give back more to the world than we take”

Carbon Offsetting.

In a nutshell, Carbon Offsetting means measuring your Carbon Footprint, and then taking action to mitigate it by investing financially in carbon offsetting projects that contribute net positively to Carbon reduction. Critically, this is one part of a carbon reduction strategyand not a ‘sticking plaster’. Eradicate first, and offset the unavoidable.

COAT is the first Carbon Positive Paint Company in the world.

Our business has taken responsibility for all Scope 1-3 carbon emissions - meaning not only ours, but those of our supply chain too. We mitigate any unavoidable impact by contributing double the amount to the UN Gold Standard environmental offsetting projects via our accreditation partner Carbon Jacked.

Double offsetting means that we’re not just neutralising our emissions, but contributing net positively to the planet.

Crisis UK Partnership.

We're proud of our luxury paint products and conscious approach. But while our mission is to help people create spaces that they love, we know there are still people in the UK without four walls to call home.

COAT supports Crisis, the national charity against homelessness, as a corporate partner.

Just last year, Crisis supported over 20,000 people with funding to help get out of homelessness. That includes over 1,500 people getting safe and secure accommodation, 8,500 making use of Crisis services.

We donate to Crisis each quarter. It's not a silver bullet, but it's important to us that businesses like ours help to level the playing field.

As we all take steps to improve our own homes with a fresh paint jobCOAT customers are supporting those without a home too. That sort of regenerative business is exactly what the world needs, in so many ways.

B Corp Certified.

COAT is the UK’s first B Corp Certified paint company.

COAT is part of a small but powerful group of companies globally using business as a force for good.

Becoming B Corp certified involves rigorous assessment of every part of the COAT business - from Environmental, Social, and Customer impact to Employee wellbeing.

We need an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economic system for all people and the planet.

We’re proud to be B Corp Certified, and a force for change.

Carbon Neutral Climate Positive

SUSTAINING ISN’T REALLY ENOUGH.

CARBON NEUTRAL

COAT has been a certified Carbon Neutral business since day one. For us, it was a fundamental part of creating a new business in the world - we just had to make sure we weren’t damaging the planet further.

It’s good, but we can do better.

= CLIMATE POSITIVE

This means going beyond neutrality. It’s a lot more work to measure and quantify, but being Climate Positive (or Carbon Positive, or Carbon Negative, or Planet Positive...) means measuring, owning, and offsetting the unavoidable emissions in our business. We know our impact, and we contribute double that back to climate positive projects that support UN sustainability goals worldwide.

We’re owning it.

Verified Climate Action, by Carbon Jacked

MEASURED, OWNED, VERIFIED.

Shockingly, there is currently no legislation dictating footprint assessments - and no requirement within the paint industry.

But we’ve decided to take action, and partner with Carbon Jacked as an independent third party to review, measure, and offset our emissions - in a rigorous, tangible way that we can stand by.

Carbon Jacked is a totally independent third-party provider of carbon footprint assessments and formal verification of carbon neutrality, in line with the recognised Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol - which is the international framework for carbon accounting.

This is an accredited process and we are so happy to be working with an expert group as driven towards climate positive change as us. Beyond the measurement, Carbon Jacked help COAT to offset any unavoidable emissions through financial contribution to UN Gold Standard sustainability projects across the globe.

“Like us COAT do things differently. They don’t see sustainability as an afterthought. They prioritised it from the start, partnering with Carbon Jacked to make them carbon neutral from day one.

And now they’ve gone even further by taking responsibility for their entire supply chain and offsetting twice as much CO2 as they produce. The amount they’ve done in less than a year is genuinely standout.”

Assessment Methodology

AN INDEPENDENT PROCESS.

Don’t just take our word for it. In fact, don’t take anyone’s word for it. Ask questions, challenge, push for more... that’s what we do at COAT. Becoming Climate Positive isn’t some certificate you getthere’s a rigorous evaluation process, action plan and financial commitment to make as a company.

Here’s how we’ve been assessed by internationally renowned standards by independent body Carbon Jacked. The numbers here are actuals from April 2021 - March 2022, and we’re working with Carbon Jacked on an ongoing basis to update our measures annually on a retrospective basis.

Beyond Basics.

“Greenwashing by companies is pretty prevalent. Producing plastics, and then cleaning the Oceans. Polluting the planet, then planting new trees.

We’ll never knock the positive actions anyone takes, but to be truly conscious companies need to think in a deeper way, and be far more transparent.”

Scope 1-3 Emissions

DIGGING DEEPER...

Some companies will look at carbon emissions termed ‘Scope 1 and Scope 2’. That means, as far as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol goes, direct emissions from controlled operations and indirect emissions from purchased energy. Basically, the stuff companies have direct control over.

Scope 3 emissions refer to all other indirect emissions from the activities of a company. So that means supply partners, fulfilment partners, logistics carriers...things where companies might have influence, but not direct control.

At COAT we decided to own our Scope 3 emissions too. We want to drive change, and if we can make friends and influence people to make better climate decisions let’s do it. In the meantime we’re taking responsibility and offsetting our supply chain emissions too.

Our emissions calcs don’t include ‘end of life treatment’ of our products i.e. what people do with leftover paint for example - but we’re tackling those by only making paint to order (zero waste), and with our unique closed-loop recycling programmes. And there’s always more to do.

LET’S OWN IT.

Our Carbon Footprint.

COAT’s annual carbon footprint, including indirect Scope 3 emissions, is 339.6 tonnes of CO2e. For an entire company, that’s a pretty darn small footprint. Scope 1 and 2 emissions (the direct COAT business) make up just 1% of COAT’s carbon footprint - with the vast majority coming from indirect Scope 3 emissions from our suppliers and

339.6 TONNES CO2e*
THAT’S ABOUT 100 CARS WORTH - FOR AN ENTIRE COMPANY...

RESPONSIBILITY, BEYOND OUR OWN BUSINESS.

77% of COAT’s Scope 3 emissions come from Purchased Goods and Services. That’s the stuff we buy from our suppliers. It is not unusual for an online business like COAT to have limited Scope 1 & 2 emissions - but it means that to have the greatest positive impact, we’re focusing improvements on Scope 3 and the areas in our supply chain that are more difficult to influence. The stuff in your control is easy. Influencing and taking responsibility for others is not - but it’s the right thing.

Purchased Goods & Services emissions are the emissions of a product or service from its creation to the point of purchase (‘cradle to gate’). For example, the emissions associated with the purchase of paint would include all raw materials, production and operations. For PG&S, by far the biggest source of COAT’s emissions comes from base paint and

How We Offset.

WE DOUBLE-OFFSET, TO GO FURTHER.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. That’s not so far away...

COAT contributes financially to initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting way beyond a minimal offset amount. Not only that, the projects we support are verified Gold Standard by the UN, and contribute to 12 of these 17 sustainable development goals.

That’s pretty cool, right? (pun absolutely intended).

Read more about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: https://sdgs.un.org/goals

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Let’s be super clear - COAT has double offset our unavoidable carbon emissions. That means offsetting twice the amount of our measured carbon footprint - because we think that ‘to sustain’ in this world is not enough. We want to give back more than we take, and help to turn the tides.

We’re supporting projects verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme, which is one of the leading international standards for the verification of carbon credits in the world. If you’re going to do it, do it right.

PROTECTING TREES > PLANTING NEW ONES.

Effectively protecting and restoring forests has the potential to mitigate 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030significantly reducing the effects of climate change. Planting new trees ain’t going to save us, so let’s protect the trees we’ve got.

But you might not know that poorly planned and illegal farming is responsible for 80% of forest loss - lots of which happens across continents like Africa and South America. Carbon Tanzania is an organisation that COAT supports with carbon offsetting credits, with projects designed to address the issue of poorly planned or illegal deforestation by empowering communities to enforce their land use plans and defend their land rights. With irreversible climate changes less than a decade away - we think the battle lies in protecting ancient forests, not necessarily in planting new seeds. It’s sad, but we’ve got to move faster than that.

We’ve shared how we do things at COAT and the ethical decisions we make. Not because we’re sanctimonious - but because we think consumers deserve to know who they’re buying from, to make conscious choices. A few too many charts perhaps, but you get it.

We’re not chaining ourselves to trees at the weekend or anything, we’re just really conscious of our impact and making the right decisions for a better future. We’ve got all control, so we’re making sure we use ours in the right way.
