Term 2 Starts in Level 2

warm welcome awaited Coatesville School students on Monday 18 May, when school resumed after the lockdown. Principal Richard Johnson and his team of staff greeted school families on their way back into the familiar school routine. Under the Level 2 restrictions, parents were encouraged not to walk children to their classes, so some students chose to walk to their class in a group with teacher Shay Behague. But for many, the chance to be back with their friends had them running through the gate. Like all New Zealand schools, Coatesville School offered distance learning via online teaching to its 290 students during the lockdown period. Richard says this went well for the most part. Devices were made available to any students who needed them so 100 percent of the students were capable of working online by the

time lockdown began. "We offered home learning from our hub on our website before distance learning officially started after Easter," says Richard. "We communicated with parents via email and they have been amazing. It was teachers, parents and the kids who made it work." Each day at 9am teachers sent out a video through Google Meet, greeting the children and giving an outline of the day's learning. This was followed up by an email that included links to any work resources needed by students and parents providing support for their children. Teachers met with classes for roughly an hour per day at a pre-arranged time. Richard says: "It seems to have worked from everyone's viewpoint and the kids have thoroughly enjoyed it."
