oatesville School students and teachers headed back to the classroom on Monday, 5 February and there was plenty of excitement in Room 8, the new entrant class. Principal Richard Johnson says this year the school is boosting its buddy system to help the younger children find their feet. "Shortly we'll ask for volunteers from our year five and six students and then partner them with a new entrant. This year we're doing things a little differently by continuing with the buddy relationship for all of term one instead of just the first weeks." He says, by extending the amount of time the new entrants have

buddies, the aim is to build lasting relationships which are beneficial to both age groups. "The older children enjoy the responsibility of helping the new entrants and it gives the younger children a bigger person they can touch base with to help smooth their initial transition to school. By making it more long term, when other things arise at school, buddies can also help by giving extra support," he says. During term one the school is focusing on cultural diversity and families will be invited to take part in assemblies and other activities around this theme.
