CARLSBAD — For the 25 years Julie Garrido has known her husband Frank, he has always been inventing things. But over the last six months, his latest invention has really taken off. Things moved quickly with the Cabinet Hero, beginning with its inception. “I’ve been a cabinet finisher for over 25 years,” Frank said. “I noticed that the sink area and trash pullout doors get the most use and the finish starts to wear away. I had an idea for a product that could protect those cabinets effectively and affordably.” “He told me he had an idea for a mass market product,” Julie said. “And by the time I woke up the next morning, he had a prototype. He created out of a need for something he saw. And that’s how it came to be.” The Cabinet Hero is a simple device that slips over the top edge of cabinet doors and drawer fronts to protect

them from damage of everyday use. “It comes in three different sizes to fit the most common size doors,” Julie said. “It’s a basic product that solves a problem. It’s made of flexible material, it’s safe and it’s FDA approved.” After patenting the product the Carlsbad residents say the last six months since they launched the product have been a whirlwind and the customer response has been affirming. “We hear people say that they’ve been searching for a product like this and people can’t believe it took so long,” Frank said. “We are the only one on the market.” For the Garridos, not only is it important that they are providing a product that is useful and accessible to all homeowners, but they also want to support their local economy. “We are making 100% of our product here in the U.S.,” Julie said. “I’m a military Air Force Vet,”

Julie Garrido & her husband Frank Frank added. “We have strong roots here and we want to keep jobs here. We are having a local factory make a whole new batch of products.” The Cabinet Hero was created with homeowners, remodeling companies, landlords and cabinet manufacturers in mind. “This product

RICHLY REFINED ARCHITECTURE highlights luxurious Loden at Olivenhain in Encinitas, by Woodbridge Pacific Group.

Diverse Buyers Are Embracing Loden At Olivenhain In Encinitas

L

oden at Olivenhain is drawing homebuyers as diverse as the opportunities builder Woodbridge Pacific Group offers at this secluded enclave, and they are drawn by the fusion of estate home design and a unique town and country lifestyle. “Some buyers grew up in Encinitas and are returning to raise their families in the place they love most,” said Chad Ross, Senior Sales Counselor for Loden builder Woodbridge Pacific Group (WPG). “Couples looking to downsize from Rancho Santa Fe, and multi-gen households love Loden,” added Ross. “The level of choice we offer in designs, home sites and personalizing opportunities makes it possible to craft your new home to your specific preferences, and that’s very enticing!” Loden at Olivenhain includes just 16 residences, on homesites of 9,000 to more than 26,000 square feet. In 7 unique configurations, one and two-story designs provide approximately 3,100 to 4,500 square feet of living space and up to 6 bedrooms and 6.5 baths. Pricing is from the $1.4 millions, and WPG offers a 3% referral fee to cooperating brokers. Adjacent to Rancho Santa Fe, Loden offers views oriented to a spectacular natural setting of rolling hills and majestic stands of mature eucalyptus. Richly detailed architecture includes Monterey, Tuscan, Spanish, Italianate, Farmhouse, Traditional, Santa Barbara and Modern styles. Formal dining rooms and expansive great rooms with showcase kitchens highlight every design. Each

home includes a covered outdoor living space, and courtyards, porches or decks further enrich selected plans. Opulent master suites are situated on ground or second level, depending on plan. Secondary bedrooms feature en suite or Jack and Jill bath design, and one home includes a self-contained casita. Home offices, game rooms, media rooms and lofts are among per plan highlights. “These homes will look and live very much like custom designs,” said Ross. “Add the beautiful setting and town and country living, and it’s easy to see why Loden shoppers make the decision to be Loden buyers.” Location advantages include highly ranked elementary, middle and high schools, and easy access to upscale shopping, dining and entertainment at La Jolla Village Square, Del Mar Shopping Center, Del Mar Plaza and Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Residents are also just 5 miles from the Pacific, with parks and preserves close at hand. Among them: Torrey Pines State Reserve, Torrey Hills Park and Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. Located at Dove Song Way and Desert Rose Way in Encinitas, Loden’s sales gallery is open Saturday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call 858882-7881 to speak with Senior Counselor Chad Ross. “To get the latest on our upcoming model opening and available homes, we suggest becoming part of our priority list,” Ross said. “You can sign up at the gallery, or register online at LodenOlivenhain.com.”

to $1,000 for materials like the wooden frames, protective suit and tools. It takes ample time and research to do it properly, plus, as the Africanization of bees makes some more aggressive, beekeepers must learn how to handle and mitigate those encounters. Conor Kelly of Encinitas Bee Company, a bee removal service, says this causes many people to give up early. “They just want to put the box there, and they want to come collect honey when it's time,” Kelly said. “It's just not how it works.” Yet many people like Leffingwell stick with it, enjoying time spent with their bees. According to James McDonald, owner of Encinitas Bee Company, the best way to start beekeeping is by reading introductory books, attending San Diego Beekeeping Society meetings and shadowing an experienced beekeeper. “No one wants to bee keep on their own,” McDonald said. “Find another beekeeper. Post online and say, ‘I want to be a tagalong.’” There are also services that will start and maintain your colony for a fee, if you don’t have the time. However, if you’re just getting into it for the honey, McDonald advises against it. “When people just want to get into beekeeping for the honey, just stop,” McDonald said. “You're not going to be happy about this. You should do it for the joy of the bees.”

ADU’s and YOU! ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS Ranging from a small 224 SF studio to 1,200 SF three full bedrooms, designed by two talented local architects

Y

ou’ve just learned your mother-in-law needs to move in and you’re already panicking about space. Or maybe you’ve been wanting to find a way to generate additional income through a rental unit? Look no further, consider adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) built by Encinitas-based Cross Construction Inc. These granny flats, or guest houses, are attached or detached residential dwelling units on the same lot as an existing single-family dwelling unit. Now is the time to consider an ADU as CA state law has changed to encourage the building of more affordable housing. For example, different cities in North County have adopted and updated their own ordinances to make building ADUs simple, so it’s a slam dunk. Many homeowners in Encinitas,

Solana Beach, Carlsbad, and Oceanside are building ADUs since the state now says they can be built concurrently with a single-family home. Additionally, they’ve opened areas were ADUs can be built, reduced fees and parking requirements, and amended building setbacks from property lines. It is now easier than ever to build an ADU. Encinitas for instance is at the forefront of the ADU trend with eight pre-designed plans, ranging from a small 224 SF studio to 1,200 SF three full bedrooms, designed by two talented local architects. These plans are part of the City’s PRADU, or permit ready ADU, program that also includes reduced fees and expedited permitting timeframes. This allows homeowners to quickly add an ADU to their property with minimal costs. “Besides adding increased prop-

erty value, generating additional income, ADU’s offer multigenerational living and an overall great lifestyle,” said Cross Construction Inc.’s Chief Operating Officer Cailin Drakos. Locally owned Cross Construction Inc. is a leading commercial and residential general contractor and has been serving the community of San Diego County since 1991. Cross specializes in ADUs, custom homes, extensive remodels, landscaping, and commercial projects. Cross has several experienced teams who self-perform all landscape and hardscape to ensure your project is delivered with the highest quality. Once you decide on adding an ADU to your property, Cross Construction Inc. can help with all phases from financing and design to permitting and construction. In order to streamline the process and make it even easier for you, Cross worked with

an interior designer to create standardized interior finish packages. Simply select what works for your budget and Cross will handle the rest. Or you can work directly with the Cross designer to customize the look and feel of your new ADU. Whether it is the expertise of the Cross team, the depth of its planning, the quality of its craftsmanship or its attention to your specific construction needs and desires, Cross is committed to bringing your construction project to life. We invite you to consider building your ADU now and start living your dream lifestyle! ou probably drive by at least once a week, but if you’ve never stopped in, you’re in for a surprise. “ People are always blown away” says Judy Swain owner of Bamboo 2U & Beach House Too in Leucadia who is celebrating their 20th anniversary with a slight change in name, look, and array of new merchandise. While she still carries plenty of Hawaiian décor, Swain welcomes the change. The store is best identified by the colorful locally made redwood lifeguard chairs lining the front walk. To many it’s still a secret, but behind those chairs is 3500 sq ft. of coastal home furnishings and accessories as well as gifts galore! This is a great time to stop in and take advantage of the up to 70% off sale on selected merchandise for your personal home, or perhaps even your beach rental. “By adding some coastal décor, you may bring more vacationers wanting the beach lifestyle experience and in turn you can earn more income,” says Judy’s long-time friend and in-home decorator Tami Kennedy. “We’re having the clearance sale to make room for new merchandise that is now arriving weekly and most importantly items that are locally crafted.” Both Judy and Tami are available should you need help with personal shopping or pulling your décor together. Along with the iconic redwood lifeguard chairs available are both Adirondack and Cottage-style garden furniture. If pieces

are not in stock during your visit, they will be ordered and customized to fit your needs, including taller chairs to capture that ocean view from your balcony. Wander through the ever-changing collection of vintage to new bamboo, natural wood and up-cycled furniture, wall art including ocean scenes and carved masked for your tiki bar, accessories for every room including sea-life plates for dining to oceanthemed bedding. “We have seashells for specimens to display or hundreds of smaller shells and sea glass for your craft projects. Mermaids, seahorses, turtles and dolphins for kids ‘rooms to collectors. Carved Hawaiian masks and poles for your tiki bar, jewelry and more to fit your home or luggage for the memory or souvenir of your beach vacation.” Judy and Tami invite you to come by and visit and suggest you plan to spend some time meandering the store. They love the people they meet, and over the last few decades Judy and her shop have become part of the local landscape. For anyone who hasn’t visited the store before, be prepared to have a penny in hand to drop in the “first-timers’ jar. The money is collected and given to San Diego Challenged Athletes Foundation. “I can’t tell you how many people say they’ve been meaning to come in for years ,” Swain said with a laugh. Fed by Bowman the Tree Doctor

Not Fed by Bowman

‘TREE DOCTOR’ Voted Best of North County

Since 1985, Russell Bowman has been delighting residents of San Diego County with his plant expertise. So, it’s no wonder Bowman Plant and Tree Care Specialists have been named the San Diego Union-Tribune Community Press’ “Best of North County” for tree and plant care for a 2nd year in a row. Lovingly referred to as the “tree doctor extraordinaire” by his clients, Bowman is known for transforming sickly trees and gardens into Disneyesque wonderlands. Using his own proprietary blend of organic biological nutrition, Bowman feeds plants at night—a trick he picked up during his time as a horticulturist at Disneyland. “When you feed plants at night, they have enough time to absorb the nutrition, before it is degraded by the sun’s rays.” He said. “That’s why, when most people are winding down their days, eating dinner, and going to bed, we are out feeding plants and trees.” He’s done more than just care for sick plants, he’s revolutionized both residential and commercial properties. “When you give your body proper nutrition, it affects your overall health and boosts your immunity

so you don’t get sick. The same is true for plants and trees.” Bowman feeds complete “nutrition delivery biology” derived from earthworm castings to replenish the missing healthy soil biology. This works with a client’s current irrigation system so that each time the landscaping is watered, the needed soil biology is replenished. “This is the secret to keeping your property looking like a five-star resort.” Russell is quick to point out that healthy plants are also environmentally friendly. A healthy plant will be more efficient at photosynthesizing sunlight into oxygen and the healthy soil uses far less water. Bowman has had clients report a thirty percent reduction in their water bills after getting their soil healthy, while their gardens remain lush and vibrant. A favorite example of the efficacy of replenishing the soil biology is a pair of neighboring Jacaranda trees and lawns. The owners of the property on the above left used Bowman (The Tree Doctor), which not only made their lawn greener but also caused their tree to continue to bloom abundantly for four (4) months longer, after the tree on the above right had lost its last purple flower.

Bowman’s dedication to plants is unwavering. He often finishes at 11 PM at night after feeding the trees and gardens for customers around the county. He donates his time to teach the children how to care for trees and gardens at El Refugio Orphanage in Mexico. He donates his time and expertise for the trees and gardens at the Rock Church in Point Loma, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the YMCA, Stone Brewery in Escondido, and San Diego Botanic Garden. He also served with the San Diego Rose Society in Balboa Park for 12 years. “My calling is to beautify the earth, making trees and plants healthy,” The Master Gardner taught me everything I know. I’ve learned that when you love something, it’s not something you have to do; it’s something you want to do.” To learn more about Bowman and his services, please contact Russell 858-499-9417 for a complimentary consultation. He provides tree and plant nutritional care as well as ongoing routine garden maintenance. ART in the

GARDEN MOSAIC ARTIST, Marsha Rafter, creates large sculptures for her clients in San Diego.

By Jano Nightingale

Claude Monet created his garden in Giverny, France simply so he could walk outdoors and paint. His famous “Water Lilies” were painted on the grounds of his French home, while standing on the pastel

pink bridge overlooking his pond. He was obsessed with a color palette so exact that he pulled hundreds of yellow lilies out of his French garden and replaced them with red tulips because the yellow did not fit into the composition of

the “Water Lilies.”

It’s not EPOXY, it’s BETTER

or nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and its tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the San Diego area. Today California homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage

from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex the best residential warranty in the market! Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on California garage floors for over 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”

CREATE YOUR OWN BACKYARD LANDSCAPE Some artists paint in their gardens, whereas Rebecca Parker’s entire life is centered on creating art

in her garden shop and beyond. “I am always creating something,” she told me in her lovely, crowded outdoor shop located at 3087 State Street in Carlsbad. She had just returned TURN TO GARDEN ON 23

Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed epoxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks – I will never do that. We always do it the right way, not the easiest way” says Paul. For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

Mexican Talavera pottery creates a grouping for the yard. GARDEN CONTINUED FROM

21

from a buying trip to Scottsdale, Arizona and had painted the interior of a friend’s house with a desert mural. Located on State Street in a tiny alley way is one the most hidden treasures in Carlsbad. Rebecca Parker, of Rebecca’s Garden, has a treasure trove of collectibles that could fit into any style of gardening. Her prices are reasonable, so you can easily pick up a few pieces and create your own sculptural garden. She scours estate sales and auctions, with trips to Mexico. If you have a favorite color or style, you could probably find it there. Above all, her shop exemplifies the three principles of landscape design: Color, form and texture. Color in her shop comes from Talavera pottery, English blue porcelain and hand made ceramics. Form is present in every sculpture, a sitting Buddha and stone troughs. And texture abounds in cylindrical fire sticks, spikey cacti and pearly jade plants. Rebecca has noticed, in 30 years of collecting and landscaping client’s yards that “most people are just afraid to get started. I had a student in my

succulent wreath class who spent an hour trying to find two succulents that were identical. Just chose what you like, and go from there!” Her shop is open every day, and photos can be found at www.rebeccasgardencarlsbad.com The trick it seems to low-cost decorative gardening is to use a small amount of plant material, such as succulents, cacti, perennial cuttings or vegetables, which can be set off by a beautiful piece of pottery or found object. According to Scott Calhoun, in his book, “Hot Pot,” (Rio Nuevo Publishers, Tucson) when planting single specimen plants such as agave, cacti and succulents, it is important to “remember that the plant is the number-one element. You want to select containers that show off the plant’s best characteristics. When placing pots in your yard, create a grouping near the entryway, on a narrow walkway or a stairway. In contemporary staging, plants are used in a rhythmic and sculptural way to create a kind of living potted work of art.” Homeowners or apartment dwellers can create their own artistic backyard landscape, or can go in search of artists who create garden sculpture.

MOSAIC ARTIST For the homeowner or businessperson who would like to create a dramatic statement in their garden, local artist, Marsha Rafter, designs strikingly beautiful mosaic sculpture for each specific client and location. Marsha began her artistic career as a ceramist in North Carolina and moved to California to further her artistic studies. In 2004 she attended the Society of American Mosaics conference, and since that time has worked in mosaics, often incorporating ceramics into her work. Her large-scale outdoor works have recently been shown in the San Diego Botanic Sculpture Show for three years. She lives and teaches weekly classes in her studio in Escondido, and conducts workshops nationally and internationally. As she describes her work, “the juxtaposition of the handmade tiles and embellishments with stained glass, smalti or found objects creates a particularly interesting and wonderful contrast in mosaics.” Her website https://marsharafter.com includes information BLUE AND WHITE pottery set off about her artwork, classes and upcom- a simple fern for an elegant look in the yard. ing events.
