Cultural connections Local Indigenous communities guide how we include culture and knowledge into the Coast Mountain College experience. It is important to recognize and respect all First Nations land and people in each of the communities Coast Mountain College serves. First Nations culture plays a huge role in campus atmosphere and Canadian society. Our classes support First Peoples’ principles of learning and recognize relationships between traditional cultures of our region and success of our students. We develop programs connected to cultural, social, political, and economic values; connected to realities of Indigenous communities we serve.

Land acknowledgement Coast Mountain College acknowledges that our campuses reside on the unceded territories of the Ts’ymsyan, Nisga’a, Haida, Gitsxan and Wet’suwet’en First Peoples. The Terrace campus is located on the traditional territory of the Laxgibuu (Wolf Clan) of the Kitsumkalum, Ts’msyan First Nation. The Smithers campus is located on the unceded territory of the Cas Yikh house who are part of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. Campuses & experiences There many outdoor activities on our campuses and in our communities. Our libraries lend bikes, snowshoes or fishing rods. Get outside and explore!

Student life

Terrace

Each campus hosts various events. Film series, beer and games nights, mountain hikes, First Nations cultural workshops, dance groups and much more at Coast Mountain College.

The Terrace campus is located on 30 acres with surrounding mountain ranges and is approximately five kilometres from city centre.

The Terrace and Smithers campuses have pedal bikes for students. Campuses host conferences, symposiums and other community-based events that students are welcome to attend. Each campus offers the Leaders in Action program for students to organize on-campus events and become on-campus leaders. Prince Rupert In Prince Rupert, our downtown campus is two buildings with an interconnecting breezeway and classrooms, computer labs, science labs and the innovation lab. Community gatherings are hosted at the multi-purpose room, where the large windows let in the sunshine. The campus is busy with the large library, multiple seminar rooms, trades facilities, a Learning Resource Centre and student Lounge.

A cafeteria, with food prepared by students, is open for breakfast and lunch. The Cedar Café offers food, coffee, and a bright study space. The Cedar building has a commons area with a study space, breakout rooms and funky furniture. The Terrace campus has a newly renovated library with study stations, student supports, and a central area for sharing. This gives students an area for learning, research and studying surrounded by wood accents and stunning art created by graduates and faculty from Coast Mountain College. The campus yurt is located in the courtyard and is a teaching lab space for classes. The fitness centre has cardio equipment, free weights and functional training equipment. Change rooms have showers and lockers. At the south end of the campus stands Waap Galts’ap, the longhouse used for student-centered and cultural activities. CMTN is the first and only institution in Canada with a traditional First Nations structure on its campus grounds. The Terrace campus also has brand new student housing with Indigenous art created by alumni and instructors at Coast Mountain College. This stunning building opened its doors in the fall of 2021.

Smithers campus Smithers is a town of approximately 5000 people that serves surrounding First Nations and Bulkley Valley residents. The town has shopping, restaurants and breweries. Smithers has sports all year long such as canoeing, kayaking, golfing, downhill and cross-country skiing. The local ski hill is a short 20-minute drive from downtown that offers student discounts. Events like Midsummer Music Festival and the Fall Fair are always fun for students. There is a strong music scene in Smithers and an art gallery, museum and many theatre performances throughout the year Campus The building is bright with natural light and heated with geothermal energy and represents three themes—forestry, resource management and Indigenous culture. The themes symbolize Coast Mountain College’s connection to the communities of the Northwest. The campus has a large gathering area and bright learning spaces. With video conferencing technology, we offer a variety of courses offered in distributed learning . Student life Smithers has a welcoming atmosphere and many international students. In this small community, students are usually a short bus ride or walking distance from the campus. The main common area is for student gatherings and has a ping pong table. The campus has bicycles and snowshoes available for lending through the library and popular events are the Wet’suwet’en War Canoe Paddle on Tyhee Lake and the horse drawn sleigh ride in the winter.
