California Coastal Cleanup Day is also the first day of Santa Barbara County’s Creek Week, which features additional opportunities to volunteer and learn about the connection between local watersheds and the open ocean. The City of Carpinteria provided kayaks and a guided tour of the reef and ocean areas to the west of Fourth Beach.

Everyone knows the energy flows better on a clean beach—none more than the participants in Jessica Kolbe’s Qi Gong class at the end of Linden Avenue.
From left, Cindy Matsumura, Carolyn Haines, Adam Haines and Jan Silk of Carpinteria Family School all set up to scour Jelly Bowl. Volunteers removed 44 pounds of trash from about a half-mile stretch of coastline. Silk has been “captain” of the Jelly Bowl Beach cleanup for five-plus years.
