Foodbank increases stock ahead of expected SNAP lapse

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County has increased its food supplies ahead of the expected Nov. 1 lapse of Calfresh (SNAP) benefits, the program formerly known as food stamps that offers financial assistance to low-income residents to purchase food.

Approximately 55,000 county residents are enrolled in the SNAP program, according to the Foodbank. Half of Santa Barbara County SNAP recipients are children, one in five are older adults on fixed incomes, and one in four are young adults or college students.

SNAP benefits are expected to be cut off for more than 42 million Americans on Saturday. The Trump administration announced last week it would not use emergency funds to fund the program during the government shutdown, which is now in its fourth week. Over 20 states, including California, filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Trump administration, stating the administration’s refusal to fund the SNAP benefits in November is illegal.

“It is important to understand who depends on CalFresh. These are not strangers or outsiders. They are neighbors, coworkers, students, and grandparents striving to make ends meet as the cost of living and food prices reach record highs,” Foodbank representatives said in a press release sent out Tuesday.

In Carpinteria, fresh produce and groceries through the Foodbank are given out at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, 5201 Eighth St., on the second Wednesday of the month, 3-5:30 p.m.; and at Realty Church, operating out of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria at 5315 Foothill Road, on the last Thursday of the month, 4–5 p.m.

Three Church Bazaar returns for 33rd year

The Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness and the County Health Department are encouraging community members to take a social media break during November with a “NoSo November” campaign.

According to the county, excessive social media use can cause anxiety, depression and stress. “Many in our community are feeling the weight of ongoing stress and uncertainty,” Toni Navarro, director of the county’s Department of Behavioral Wellness, said in a press release sent out this week. “Taking a conscious break from social media gives our minds and bodies the chance to reset, reconnect, and recharge — and it’s something we can do together.”

The county recommends spending time outdoors, reading a book, volunteering or meditation as alternatives to social media. Community members can pledge their social media breaks online at countyofsb.org/4833/NoSoNovember-English.

MOVE SBC to give away bike lights

MOVE Santa Barbara County — a nonprofit that promotes walking, biking and public transit throughout the county — is giving away free, rechargeable bike lights in Carpinteria on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Linden and Carpinteria avenues.

At that time, volunteers will help install the lights and offer safety tips, according to a press release sent out last week.

MOVE SBC is also giving out free bike lights on the Santa Barbara Eastside on Milpas and Cota streets on Monday, Nov. 3; in downtown Santa Barbara on State and Ortega streets on Tuesday, Nov. 4; on the Santa Barbara Westside at Micheltorena and San Andres streets on Wednesday, Nov. 5; and in Goleta on Friday, Nov. 7 at 5679 Hollister Ave. All giveaways will begin at 5 p.m.

More information needed on Verizon antenna installation, ARB says

At the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board’s (ARB) Oct. 16 meeting, the board asked Verizon Wireless to come back with more information and a robust plan for its wireless telecommunications antenna array installation project proposed for 912 Linden Ave. The current plans has the installations placed on three separate locations atop the 912 Linden Ave. building, which is home to several businesses such as Sushi Teri, Whimsy Antiques and Pacific Health Foods.

Antenna arrays would be placed in the north corner, with one on each side of Carpinteria’s clock tower, the clock that faces the intersection of Carpinteria and Linden avenues. These antennas would be concealed by architectural features made out of an opaque vinyl material that would mimic the existing clock tower’s wings, making the clock tower look slightly wider while concealing the antenna equipment.

Another array would be installed on the south corner of the building, with a supportive equipment enclosure placed on the back building facing Cactus Lane, directly behind Pacific Health Foods.

Each array would be made up of three wireless radios, two 4-foot-tall wireless panel antennas, and one integrated radio antenna. Verizon Wireless has proposed the project to improve its coverage and overall network performance in downtown Carpinteria and the surrounding area, according to the ARB’s staff report.

“They’ve had coverage issues and they need to improve in building coverage, along with capacity, to improve customer experience within this area,” said city planner Bret McNulty, who presented the project to the board.

The installation would also include new parking for an equipment generator, two secure roof-access ladders, wiring harnessing to connect the wireless components, connections to the area’s existing electrical panels, and an easement along Cactus Lane to allow for an underground electric utility connection.

Staff asked the board to provide direction for the applicant and staff on potential design changes to help the antenna arrays blend more seamlessly with the existing architecture, as well as the project’s overall consistency with Carpinteria’s small beach town character.

Staff also asked for guidance from board members about the project’s compliance with a portion of the city’s municipal code that requires facilities to blend in architecturally.

Celeste Magennis with Centerline Communications spoke on behalf of Verizon Wireless at the Oct. 16 meeting, explaining to the board that she and McNulty had spent several weeks going back and forth to improve the original proposal. Changes from the original proposal focused on improving the look of the clock tower wings to make the design more consistent with the clock tower.

Board member Richard Little questioned whether the installation could be placed about a half mile from the planned site, near Eugenia Place, which would take it out of the main downtown strip. Magennis said Verizon Wireless hopes to improve coverage downtown Carpinteria, near Linden Avenue, hence the proposed location.

A handful of locals spoke against the project during the board’s public comment session, including business owners whose stores are located near the project site. Commenters cited the historic significance of the building where the antennas would be placed and questioned whether the building could handle the weight of the installation.

Gary Binkow, owner of the Longevity Lab located on Carpinteria Avenue, called the project “almost sacrilegious,” and said he was surprised it was being considered. He questioned the project’s necessity and asked why it couldn’t be placed outside of downtown Carpinteria.

“Where are all these people that are saying ‘We need more Verizon, we’re not getting enough bars on our Verizon service,’” Binkow asked. “I think it would be a travesty for you guys to allow them to put this cell tower at the front end of your gorgeous town.”

Whitney Noll, who owns Pacific Health Foods with her husband Nathan, said she and her husband were concerned about the structural integrity of the one-story building that faces Cactus

Lane, where the supportive equipment shed is proposed.

Noll told board members that in 2018, a civil engineer told her that the building was “marginally constructed” and is being held up by a metal pole and wooden beams. She also told board members that she recently discovered some wood rotting in the corner of the building.

“Back in the day it was a magazine shack (...) It was a storage building for Sushi Teri for the longest time before he graciously gave it to us to expand our family-owned business,” Noll said. “My husband’s and my concern… is putting that much weight on that building.”

The back building currently includes several shelves and a walk-in fridge and freezer used by Pacific Health Foods. Noll

questioned how Verizon Wireless will install a ladder on the outside of the building without damaging the structures and equipment on the other side of the wall.

Noll also noted one of the proposed roof-access ladders would fall into a Pacific Health Food parking spot, and she questioned if this meant the store would be losing one of its parking spots.

“Again, our main concern is if you put what you’re proposing on that one-story building… We have many doubts that you’re going to keep our investment safe,” Noll said.

Following public comments, board members Lisa Woolf and Little suggested Verizon Wireless consider alternative locations for the installation. Little also suggested moving the antenna to the middle of the building.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate at all,” Woolf said. “And it’s offensive to me that we would ever ruin the one architectural feature this town has in the most important intersection in the town.”

Little also said he didn’t like the idea of combining vinyl material with the original stucco that the Carpinteria Clock Tower is made of because vinyl degrades relatively quickly.

Board member Richard Johnson disagreed with his fellow board members, stating that the project was “sensitively designed” and “well done.” Board member Patrick O’Connor asked Verizon Wireless to come back with more information about the alternative site options and why those weren’t chosen, as well as the historical significance of the 912 Linden Ave. building.

After board members voiced their comments, McNulty chimed in and said Verizon Wireless has acknowledged that it has “a ways to go on (the) project,” and that the company had requested a continuance of the preliminary review.

An updated version of the project will be presented at a future ARB meeting for preliminary review.

Board member Woolf made a motion for a continuance to the preliminary review, with the condition that Verizon Wireless consider a different location.

The motion failed, and board member Johnson then motioned to grant the continuance with the advisement that Verizon Wireless restudy the project.

The motion passed, with Woolf voting no and ARB Chair Amy Blakemore absent.

Council questions Chevron decommissioning project’s impact on city roads

On Monday, Chevron U.S.A. Inc. representative Mark Korte-Nahabedian presented a detailed timeline and fielded questions from the Carpinteria City Council about the company’s oil and gas decommissioning project for its facility on the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Chevron is now preparing its permits to begin executing a roughly three-year plan to decommission and remediate the Carpinteria Oil and Gas facility that stretches across 55 acres located on the bluffs behind Carpinteria City Hall, Korte-Nahabedian said.

The project schedule is broken down into four phases: demolition, data collection, remediation and restoration.

Beginning with demolition, excavators will remove above and below ground facilities, along with selected trees that currently stand in the way of removal operations. All of the removed materials will be transported offsite by trucks where they will either be recycled or disposed of.

Remediation work will follow shortly after, excavating and replacing impacted soil to pave the way for the restoration phase. As part of the final restoration phase, Chevron will focus on bluff and surface drainage stabilization along with appropriate revegetation.

“The site restoration plans include bluffs stabilization, which take into account any sort of changes into how the surface drainage works at the property and then it has to stabilize — so, if there’s erosion problems associated with it, Chevron is obligated to come back and ensure that it does perform properly,” Nahabedian said.

They will exit from the east of the property, with traffic control assistance to ensure safety, spitting out onto State Route 150, which will then take them to Highway 101. The trucks will avoid peak traffic hours and busy routes through town.

Councilmember Wade Nomura, however, expressed concern with the impacts that 20-30 trucks a day over a possible three-year period could have on Carpinteria streets. Loaded truck trips can deteriorate paved roads much quicker than average car trips, he pointed out, and asked the Chevron representatives if there were plans to reimburse the city for any long-term damage caused.

“Have we considered any type of funding for the aggressive usage of our roads — deterioration factors of the paved roads — because (Chevron) is going to be taking 20-30 truckloads a day on one, specific route,” Nomura asked.

Short-term damages, like potholes, are accounted for in the current plan, which can be amended as needed, Nahabedian told the council. Community Development Director Nick Bobroff said Chevron has committed to submitting a road assessment to the council before truckloads begin so that the city can have a baseline to compare damages to.

Vice Mayor Mónica Solórzano asked if the 24/7 barge portion of the project — an offshore operation — would cause any

noticeable noise or light.

“The barge will be lit and visible from shore, but will not come within 1,000 feet of the coast,” Nahabedian responded. “(...) We’ve discussed this with some of the Seal Watch organization, who have good concerns about the seals being able to rest at night. The dark skies will be generally maintained, but you will be able to see (the barge) from shore.”

All other project operations will typically take place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Franklin Trail project receives final ARB approval

BY JUN STARKEY The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board (ARB) approved its final review of the Franklin Creek Trail Improvement Project — which would replace the informal trail that connects Carpinteria Avenue to Seventh Street — at its Oct. 16 meeting.

The project, proposed by the city of Carpinteria’s Public Works department, came before the ARB in April. At that time, the board granted preliminary approval with a few comments, including considering a different surface material, confirming that the drainage is coordinated with a nearby project, removing the fabric covering from fencing, and adjusting the plant palette to include more native plants.

The project went before the Carpinteria Planning Commission in July, which also granted approval with the stipulation that a native tree be planted to replace the eucalyptus tree on Carpinteria Avenue, and interpretive signage be placed along the trail.

comments. The final project now includes permeable concrete — a swap from the original plan of asphalt — for the 900-foot paved, 12- to 13-feet-wide path, with two striped lanes for bikes and pedestrians.

The plan also includes benches, gates, trash cans and lighting, as well as a chain link fence that would run along the creek side of the path.

The project was also updated to include coast live oaks, which was suggested by ARB Chair Amy Blakemore during the ARB’s preliminary review of the project.

“I think it’s a fine project, I think it’s been a long time coming,” said ARB member Richard Johnson.

Board member Richard Little agreed with Johnson’s comments but requested that the tree that is planted along Carpinteria Avenue be planted in a 36-inch box instead of a 24-inch box, due to how fast the plant grows.

Blakemore agreed with Little and motioned to approve the project with the stipulation for a 36-inch box for the tree.

The motion was approved by the board unanimously.

City representatives headed to Sacramento to argue against proposed county rezones

Carpinteria Councilmember Julia Mayer and City Manager Michael Ramirez will head to Sacramento next week to speak out against Santa Barbara County’s proposed rezones of three Carpinteria Valley properties — located just outside city limits — for high-density housing.

The three Carpinteria Valley properties, which could bring more than 600 new units of housing to the valley, are: a parcel known as the Bailard Property at 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave.; Van Wingerden 1 at 4098 Via Real; and Van Wingerden 2 at 4711 Foothill Road. The Bailard parcel — which was sold to the county by the Carpinteria Unified School District — is currently zoned as single-family residential, while the two Van Wingerden properties are designated agricultural.

The rezones are currently in the hands of the California Coastal Commission, which will vote next week on Nov. 6 to approve, deny or modify the county’s proposal. Coastal Commission staff are recommending the approval of the county’s rezones.

Like the city, the county must plan for a certain number of housing units, mandated by the state of California, in its Housing Element to help address the state’s housing crisis. But Carpinteria council members have repeatedly spoken out against the county’s proposed rezones over the past few years, arguing that putting high-density housing in those areas of the Carpinteria Valley would fundamentally change the Carpinteria landscape and unfairly burden the area.

City Principal Planner Mindy Fogg told the council on Monday that staff are concerned that this could “undermine agriculture preservation goals and place additional strain on city infrastructure and services.”

In addition to sending Councilmember Mayer and City Manager Ramirez as in-person representatives, city staff are preparing a formal comment letter for the Coastal Commission. “...we have had a number of email exchanges with Coastal Commission staff over the last 18 months as well, reminding them that this is of interest to us and sharing our concerns,” Community

We strongly urge you to identify the single primary concern as maintaining the urban rural boundary as a long-standing, important planning boundary that needs to be there and counted on by property owners and by speculators so that we don’t have a bunch of agriculture properties getting speculative purchases from people who want to grow condos.”

New standardized trash cans cost $84k

On Monday night, the Carpinteria City Council authorized the $84,865 purchase of 35 new trash receptacles for installation throughout the city.

In early 2022, the city began an initiative to standardize public trash cans with the goal of replacing aging and damaged units, improving collection efficiency for the city waste hauler E.J. Harrison & Sons, and creating uniformity.

Later that year, the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board (ARB) approved an urban-renaissance model — a 36-gallon stainless steel unit, powder-coated in “Carpinteria Green” — as the new standardized trash can.

The bins include an integrated dome lid to protect from animals and weather and side-opening doors to allow ease and efficiency during waste hauler collection. They have two collection receptacles, one intended for trash and the other for cans and bottles, but a single streamliner, meaning both trash and recyclables are collected together.

The collected waste is taken to Gold Coast Recycling Transfer Station, where recyclables are sorted after collection.

tacles, the city can streamline collection, improve recycling recovery, and reduce costs by only purchasing one unit instead of two separate bins.”

Since 2022, the city has purchased 28 new receptacles as part of the plan to gradually implement new bins across the city until complete replacement and will obtain another 35 cans for the amount of $84,865 — $2,424 per can — with Monday’s vote. The council approved a 5% increase to its solid waste franchise fees in March of this year to fund the can replacements.

The city currently has 150 trash cans in the public right-of-way and 64 in the parks, Millar said. “...it will take a few years before we can replace all of them, but we are slowly working towards it,” she said.

The Carpinteria City Council passed two proclamations during Monday night’s meeting, declaring October as Promotoras Month in the city of Carpinteria and celebrating the 39th California Avocado Festival, which was held on Linden Avenue earlier this month.

The first proclamation celebrates promotoras, community health workers, in honor of their dedicated work to ensure access to health services for all. The proclamation largely attributed Carpinteria children and families’ access to vital services — including early education, mental health supports, food and housing assistance, and preventive healthcare — to the work of promotoras.

“This is really a recognition for all of our wonderful promotoras and we just wanted to make sure that they’re acknowledged for all of their hard work — they are trusted messengers in the community and the Carpinteria Children’s Project can’t do the work that we do without them,” Carpinteria Children’s Project Executive Director Teresa Alvarez told the council on Monday.

The council’s second proclamation paid special homage to the annual California Avocado Festival — known colloquially as AvoFest — which hit 39 years earlier this month. The festival has

grown over the past few decades from a small, community affair to a large free music and street festival. The proclamation specifically thanked Festival Board Co-President Mike Lazaro, Festival Director Olivia Sorgman and the entire Avocado Festival Board of Directors.

“We are so proud of everything we accomplished and so thankful for everyone that makes it possible,” Sorgman shared. “And we are so excited that next year is the 40th (anniversary)!”

Reflections on self-sufficiency

THE LAY OF THE LAND M I K E WO N D O LOW S K I As we trudged up the mountain under the bright August sun, we approached a lone scraggly whitebark pine and realized it offered the last small spot of shade before Kearsarge Pass. After a short break in the shade, we strapped our backpacks on again and continued above the treeline toward the pass.

It was day two of a five-day backpacking trip where my wife Diane and I hiked across the Sierra Nevada. We started at the Onion Valley Trailhead on the east side and finished at Roads End in Kings Canyon National Park on the west. For serious backpackers, it is not a tremendously difficult route, but for us it was a fun challenge.

We hiked up and over the crest of the Sierra Nevada, around towering granite monoliths, along picturesque lakes, and through glacier-cut valleys. The route includes sections of the famous John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. Our pride began to grow as we thought about how self-sufficient we were. We carried all our food, filtered our water, and camped with only the equipment on our backs.

We heeded information warning us to be extra careful with our backpacks and our food because of increased bear activity in certain areas.

All in all, we were feeling pretty good about ourselves — alone in the wilderness, self-sufficient, not needing anything from anyone, just us and the mountains.

While that thought was bouncing around in my head, I found myself carefully stepping down the stones set in the trail like a staircase to descend past Bullfrog Lake. I had to admit to myself

that our “complete self-sufficiency” was pretty heavily reliant on the work of trail builders and trail maintenance crews. There were also the folks who developed the CalTopo mapping app on our iPhones, not to mention the GPS capability of the iPhones themselves or the USB battery we recharged them from every night.

Yes, we were carrying all our food. It included pre-packaged dehydrated backpacking food that becomes a surprisingly tasty meal just by adding boiling water. It also included electrolyte-balanced energy bars and roasted cashews and macadamia nuts. Some clever people figured out how to dehydrate and package the food so it was the minimum possible weight for us to carry, yet nutritious and tasty. Similarly, someone else figured out optimal recipes for energy bars. Yet others grew our nuts someplace far away, allowing us to minimize our pack weights with this energy-dense food.

The water we drank and used for cooking had to be filtered, and so our water filters (invented and manufactured by yet other people) were critical to us. Our tent, sleeping bags and sleeping pad are incredibly lightweight and the result of years of designers tweaking them to meet backpackers’ needs.

Oh, and our one-way hike was only possible thanks to my sister who shuttled us from where we parked our car at the end point all the way around the Sierra Nevada to our starting point!

The bottom line is that we did indeed work hard, and we felt good about achieving our goal, but we were far from self-sufficient.

This made me think about other times when we might feel we are achieving something solely through our own skill, grit, and determination, blazing our own trail. It might be an entrepreneur who creates a new business, or a Do-It-Yourselfer who single-handedly builds an addition to their house, or maybe a writer who finishes their first novel.

But each also relies on a multitude of other people: manufacturers of the product to be sold by the entrepreneur, a lumberyard and a paint manufacturer for the DIY enthusiast, a treasured high school teacher for the future New York Times bestselling author.

Every one of them also depends on clean running water, a functioning sewer system, roads that allow them (and deliveries to them) to get around, and police and fire protection. Then there is the infrastructure to ensure their food is safe and that the products they buy are what they should be. That inspiring high school teacher also needs a classroom as well as a paycheck. The author’s flight to meet with their editor would not happen without TSA agents and FAA air traffic controllers.

It is clear that even the most self-sufficient of us relies on the support of others, especially various levels of government without which there would be no clean running water, roads, public safety pro-

tection, public schools, or safe airline flights.

Government is not free of problems – no organization is. The publicly traded company I work for isn’t perfect. My boss isn’t. I’m not. But we work to improve the organization, not just criticize it or shut it down or dismantle it. Government is all of us, and it is up to us to take an active role to shape it into what works best for everyone.

Every week at the Carpinteria Community Library, something special happens.

In quiet corners and the community room, pairs of people meet to talk, read, laugh, and learn together. These aren’t formal classes or grammar drills; they’re conversations that build confidence, connection, and community.

The Adult Literacy Program at the Carpinteria Library matches volunteer tutors with adults who want to learn and improve their English reading, writing, or speaking skills. Our learners come from all walks of life — some have recently arrived in Carpinteria, while others have called it home for decades. Many are parents, grandparents, or community members who work in local businesses, have children in local schools, and proudly call this beautiful town home.

What they all share is a desire to grow.

Some want to speak more comfortably with their children’s teachers, read instructions at work, or ask for help at the store. Others simply want to feel more confident when talking with neighbors or coworkers.

As a tutor, you don’t need to be a teacher or speak another language besides English. What we need most are people who are patient, kind, and willing to listen. Your role is to offer learners a safe, encouraging space to practice English, something many don’t get at home or work. The library provides training, materials, and ongoing support to help you feel prepared and confident.

Volunteering as a literacy tutor is one of the most rewarding ways to make an impact right here in Carpinteria. You’ll see the difference your time makes, not only in someone’s English skills but in their confidence and sense of belonging.

Our learners remind us that learning never stops. Many are women who devoted years to raising children and caring for their families and are now taking time to do something for themselves. Others are men working to take the next step in their careers and provide a better future for their families.

The Palm Loft Gallery (410 Palm Ave., A-1) will host a book signing and author talk with Michael Bond Smith for his new book, “The Magical Murals of Sandyland Cove,” on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.

“The Magical Murals of Sandyland Cove” features murals from Carpinteria, including the iconic “World’s Safest Beach” mural by local artist John Wullbrandt. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event. Attendees can meet Smith and learn the inspiration behind his latest work, gallery owner Arturo Tello said in an email.

Carpinteria radio station to broadcast “War of the Worlds”

The Carpinteria Valley Radio will present Orson Welles’ legendary radio broadcast “War of the Worlds” in its entirety on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m., the station announced this week.

Carpinteria Valley Radio encourages locals to tune in to the broadcast “to experience the original broadcast that famously scared the heck out of America 87 years ago.”

Fall Arts & Craft Faire: Nov. 1

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center will host its fall Arts & Craft Faire on Saturday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with featured artist of the month, candle creator Trisha Taylor.

Taylor creates soy candles “infused with Reiki love and healing energy,” said Chris Monteath with the arts center. “She strives to offer a joyful and soulful experience through her candles.”

Arts center to host Day of the Dead celebration Sunday

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center will host a free, family-friendly Day of the Dead celebration on Sunday, Nov. 2, 4–6 p.m., with food, performances and a community altar for locals to honor and remember their loved ones.

Community members are encouraged to bring photos of their loved ones who have passed away to place on the community ofrenda, according to a press release from the arts center sent out this week. Hot chocolate and traditional bread will also be offered.

“We are thrilled to open our doors and hearts to celebrate this meaningful tradition together,” said Lourdes Trigueros, a member of the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center Board of Directors. “Día de los Muertos is a time to honor our loved ones who have passed and to share the beauty of culture, art, and remembrance with our

entire community. Everyone is welcome to join in this joyful and colorful celebration.”

Las Chinas Oaxaqueñas Las Isabeles from Oxnard, a traditional Oaxacan dance group, will perform, directed by Ana Avendaño. The group represents the spirit of Oaxaca’s traditional festivals, the arts center stated in a press release, performing the Jarabe del Valle while wearing brightly colored clothing and carrying flower-filled baskets, which symbolizes faith, gratitude and community.

The event is a collaboration between PacWest Blooms, the Carpinteria Children’s Project, and the arts center. The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center is located at 865 Linden Ave.

AgeWell, SBCC collaborate for first responder photography show

Carpinteria’s AgeWell Program has partnered with the Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) School of Extended Learning to create “Portraits of Life After Service — A Moving Tribute Honoring Veterans and First Responders,” an exhibit featuring photos created by veterans, first responders and their families.

The show will take place at The Alcazar Theatre, 4916 Carpinteria Ave., on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

The veterans and first responders participated in a specialized photography class at SBCC, guided by instructors Bill and Steve Espinosa, which was designed to foster creativity and connection, according to a press release from the city sent out last week.

The Espinosa brothers will introduce the program at the Thursday event and explain how they collaborated with participants to create the show. The show will include brief storytelling and discussion segments with the photographers.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, though reservations are encouraged. For more information or to reserve a seat, visit thealcazar.org or contact Jena Jenkins at jenaj@carpinteriaca.gov.

Carpinteria Beautiful, Skate Foundation among Festival of Trees recipients

Funds from the 16th annual Festival of Trees, hosted by the Lions Club of Carpinteria, will benefit eight local nonprofits, organizers announced this week.

They include: Carpinteria Beautiful, California Women for Agriculture, Carpinteria Senior Citizens, the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, Carpinteria Historical Society, the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning, the Carpinteria Skate Foundation and the Carpinteria Children’s Project.

During the Festival of Trees, which kicks off Nov. 28 at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Cetner, local organizations, artists, businesses and schools decorate Christmas trees to be displayed and auctioned off at the arts center. The trees can be seen at the arts center from Nov. 28 until Dec. 14.

Morning Rotary learns about city’s financial future

Carpinteria’s City Manager Michael Ramirez spoke to the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning at a special meeting last week about the fiscal challenges and opportunities facing Carpinteria.

Ramirez offered insights into the city’s budget priorities and long-term planning efforts, club representatives told Coastal View News.

“The meeting fostered thoughtful discussion and meaningful connections among city leadership, community members, and local Rotarians, reflecting Rotary’s ongoing commitment to informed dialogue and civic collaboration,” said the club’s President Stephen Gerteis.

Noon Rotary learns about handwriting from expert

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon heard from handwriting specialist Chuck Talmage at a recent club meeting, who gave club members insight into the psychology of handwriting.

“He also talked about the handwriting samples of Michael Jackson, Beethoven and Audrey Hepburn,” club member Karen Graf said. “His presentation was interesting and educational.”

Noon Rotary hits goat donation goal

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon has now donated 53 goats to families in need through its Goat Project, surpassing the club’s goal of donating 50 goats in 2025.

The goats provide families in impoverished areas with milk and cheese and create manure to enrich the soil. The goats also reproduce, allowing families to expand their herd, club representatives told Coastal View News. The cost of donating a goat is $70.

“Each donor gets to name their goat, and creativity runs wild,” said the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon President David Powdrell. “Some of our favorites include Vincent Van Goat, Avo, Ubuntu, Charlotte, Ziggy, Blossom, and Heidrun — but all 53 have names as unique as the families they help support.”

Carpinteria Beautiful’s Bryan Mootz said the volunteers started at the Carpinteria Bluffs Parking Lot and worked their way east on Carpinteria Avenue. They filled nine bags of trash, picked up two chairs, and pulled a cabinet out of the bushes for the city’s Public Works Department to grab. “Not one volunteer complained. Carpinteria Beautiful and Cate School are planning another cleanup in November,” Mootz said. CAPP Advertisement Carpinteria Valley Water District (Owner) is requesting Bids for the construction of the following Project: Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project Advanced Water Purification Facility Bids for the construction of the Project will be received at the Carpinteria Valley Water District’s offices located at 1301 Santa Ynez Ave, Carpinteria, CA 93013, until 14th of November up to but no later than 3:00 PM local time. At that time the Bids received will be publicly opened and read.

The Project includes the following Work: The Advanced Water Purification Facilit y (AWPF) c onstr uction includes demolition of existing structures, soil improvements (deep cement soil mixing, helical anchors), civil site work and grading, concrete construction, building and canopy construction, yard piping, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, SCADA systems, and equipment installation.

Labor Compliance Pursuant to Labor Code Section 1773, Owner has obtained the prevailing rate of per diem wages and the prevailing wage rate for holiday and overtime work applicable in Santa Barbara County from the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations for each craft, classification, or type of worker needed to execute this contract. A copy of these prevailing wage rates may be obtained via the internet at: www.dir.ca.gov/dlsr/.

In addition, a copy of the Davis Bacon prevailing rate of per diem wages is attached to the Bidding Documents and the latest can be downloaded at the following address: https:// sam.gov/ and shall be made available to interested parties upon request. The successful Bidder shall post a copy of the prevailing wage rates at each job site. It shall be mandatory upon the Bidder to whom the Contract is awarded, and upon any subcontractors, to comply with all Labor Code provisions, which include but are not limited to the payment of not less than the said specified prevailing wage rates to all workers employed by them in the execution of the Contract, employment of apprentices, hours of labor and debarment of contractors and subcontractors.

Since this Project is funded in whole or in part with federal funds, the work must also comply with the minimum rates for wages for laborers and mechanics as determined by the Secretary of Labor in accordance with the provisions of Davis-Bacon. As between the State and Federal rates, the higher of the two rates must be paid. Attention is directed to the Funding Agreement Conditions section of the Bidding Documents.

It wasn’t an Elvis sighting, but for Santa Cruz Island it was close. Something so small had just caught everyone in the immediate vicinity by surprise. A tiny island spotted skunk on Santa Cruz Island had just emerged from the undergrowth of a tangled maze of island morning glory.

Weighing in at a svelte one pound, one of the rarest carnivores in the world decided it wasn’t keeping vampire hours on Sept. 18. Secretive and nocturnal, its fur was matted from heavy rain the night before. It loped up Scorpion Canyon in the middle of 20 or so bewildered gawkers like it owned the craggy gorge, despite the fact that seven or eight island foxes living in the lower canyon might have had something to say about that.

Still, when you’re one of roughly one thousand and only found on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands, maybe making a rare, mid-day appearance to strut its stinky self was cool as long as it didn’t decide to spray anyone.

While leading a kayak tour on Sept. 17, northwest winds generated by Mario whipped up at Cavern Point, notorious for winds billowing upward and swirling around the cove and its wave-battered cliffs. When gusts of wind funneled into Cavern Point that early afternoon, the water darkened and rippled rapidly.

I had a father and son in a tandem that had a slight problem shifting their weight in unison, and the vortex did a number on them. Flipping out of their kayak, the vortex spun them around in a whirlpool until the gust dissipated. When it did, I gathered father and son into their boat, only for the vortex to crank up again. This time they not only fell out of their kayak, but the vortex lifted their boat off the water and spun it into the air. The kayak landed upside down on top of the son.

Fortunately, the elements corrected the situation and the kayak flipped back over.

This time father and son scrambled into the kayak much faster, and retreated into Cavern Point Cave and out of the tumult.

I’ve always been amazed how northwest winds gather, billow and unleash mighty gusts wherever the island protrudes further out than the rest. Some of those places can be escaped quite easily by simply paddling by, but some of those places like the cove at Cavern Point create such a force, it can catch unwary visitors off guard.

The unseasonal vortex at Cavern Point turned out to be a prelude for later that evening. Just after midnight, Scorpion Canyon lit up with rapid fire lightning bolts. Maybe 10 seconds apart, Tropical Storm Mario was upon us dumping an inch of rain until dawn. The next morning there were a lot of soggy tents and sleeping bags throughout the lower campground.

It caught the island foxes off guard too. A number of them emerged from underneath bushels of Santa Cruz Island buckwheat and lemonade berry dampened and bewildered. When was the last time it rained mid-September?

Appearing bedraggled following the late summer downpour, they shook it off, and instantly got busy grooming themselves and each other, which is part of their behavior. Pairs of island foxes often display grooming practices where they trade-off on grooming and removing ticks.

Scorpion Canyon was wet. Lots of puddles were immediately used by busy house finches, rufous-crowned and Lincoln sparrows, quirky cowbirds and raucous ravens. That dump of rain was like a shot of Vitamin-B for the local island fauna. And later that day, after all kayak tours were finished, and gear was cleaned up and put away, the biggest surprise with the smallest stature caught everyone off guard just like Tropical Storm Mario.

Still, when you’re one of roughly one thousand and only found on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands, maybe making a rare, midday appearance to strut its stinky self was cool as long as it didn’t decide to spray anyone.

Deluge disorientation

Maybe it was the weather, heavy humidity hanging in the warm autumn air that drew one of the tiniest carnivores in the world out into the open. One of the guides nonchalantly said, “Hey, daytime skunk.” Some of us didn’t believe what we were hearing. Some of us glanced into the general vicinity, but island spotted skunks being so small, most of us didn’t see it at first.

Then, I saw a guide sit down on the ground with his camera, and I knew something spectacular was up. After crossing the dirt road, a matted little skunk trotted into the island morning glory. Thinking the show was over, five minutes later the island spotted skunk was on the move again. It crossed into the corral and beelined it to the grapevine that was left over during the ranching era on Santa Cruz Island.

I hopped the fence, and bushwhacked into the gully where I found the skunk munching on more grapes than it could handle. After it got its fill of grapes, it did what island spotted skunks do best and burrowed into a maze of grapevines, lemonade berry and coyote bush wrapped around a toyon tree.

No one saw the island spotted skunk again, but these rare island inhabitants are mostly smelled before being seen.

So, that evening as I walked up Scorpion Canyon to my tent, my sense of smell was on high alert, but expectations were low, nocturnal natural wonders the hardest to come by.

Carpinteria football falls 49-0 in Homecoming game

BY RYAN P. CRUZ PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium was filled with Warrior spirit for this year’s Homecoming football game against Nordhoff High School on Friday, Oct. 24. But on the field, the visiting Rangers held control from the first quarter to the final whistle, with Nordhoff claiming the win over Carpinteria in a 49-0 shutout.

The Warriors struggled to defend against Nordhoff’s pass-heavy offense, and early in the game Rangers junior quarterback Michael Dennie hit senior tight end Elliot Sheets for a 50-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

The Rangers’ offense continued to hit on big passes in the second quarter.

Dennie threw his second touchdown on a deep fade down the left sideline. On the next drive, he threw another 48-yard bomb to set Nordhoff up for an easy running touchdown. Nordhoff held on to a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Nordhoff’s passing game continued to put up points. Dennie threw two more touchdown passes in the third quarter to head into the fourth with Nordhoff firmly in the lead, 35-0.

Nordhoff put up two more scores in the fourth quarter — a 56-yard pass and a 72-yard catch-and run — to give the Rangers the win by a final score of 49-0.

“It was a disappointing result tonight, but looking on the bright side, we still control our own destiny,” said Carpinteria co-coach Van Latham.

The Warriors take the field for the Oct. 24 homecoming game.

The Warriors are still tied for third place in the Citrus Coast League, setting up a big matchup against Channel Islands this week. The winner of this game will clinch a spot in the CIF playoffs.

“We play Channel Islands next week.

We are currently tied for third. The winner of next week’s game goes to the playoffs,” Latham said.

Warriors water polo headed to playoffs with win streak

Carpinteria finished the regular season on a seven-game win streak, capping off the season with a 10-8 win on the road at Camarillo on Oct. 22.

The Warriors celebrated its nine seniors — Massimo Bonilla-Zakosek, Sebastian Chisum-Grindle, Jake Ehlers, Jeremy Haines, Sky Korling, Taison Lee, Sam Medel, Micah Smith and Dezmond Witherspoon — in the final home game the day before on Oct. 21. Each one of the seniors scored in the 20-0 win over Nordhoff.

On Oct. 22, the Warriors traveled to Camarillo and came away with a hard-fought victory, despite Carpinteria missing part of its starting roster.

Carpinteria was led by Chris Reed and Micah Smith, who set the stage with three early goals in the first quarter. Sky Korling and Ryder Shaw scored a pair of goals in the second to give the Warriors a 5-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, Camarillo cut the lead to one goal before Carpinteria’s offense responded and put the Warriors back up by two heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, goaltender Stefano Piccoletti stepped up to maintain the two goal lead and help the Warriors claim the win, 10-8.

The Warriors are now preparing for the highly competitive CIF Division 2 playoffs, starting with a first-round matchup against Crean Lutheran, the champion of the Coast View League. The Warriors will face Crean Lutheran on the road on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Carpinteria tennis continues Citrus Coast League domination

Carpinteria girls tennis sailed through the Citrus Coast League schedule this year, capping off the regular season with a 15-3 win over Fillmore to finish with a perfect 12-0 league record in 2025.

It was Senior Day for the four veteran members of the Warriors squad — Kacy Kramer, Karissa Cavier, Abby Gobbell and Charlotte Cooney — who were honored in a pre-game ceremony before the win over Fillmore on Oct. 23.

Cooney, a senior captain who has not been defeated in either singles or doubles this season, finished with yet another 3-0 sweep in singles against Fillmore. “(Charlotte) is just a true competitor,” coach Charles Bryant said.

Gobbell also turned in a 3-0 sweep on senior day, adding to a successful senior season in singles play. The Warriors mixed it up in doubles play, with Kramer teaming up with two different partners to finish 3-0, and four more duos teaming up to help Carpinteria claim the win.

“Overall, it was a great day for seniors Charlotte Cooney, Kacy Kramer, Abby Gobbell and Karissa Cavier and the rest of the team,” coach Bryant said. “There is a strong bond and chemistry on this team with the players. They truly have a good time together and work hard for each other.”

The Warriors had six individual players qualify for the first round of the Citrus Coast League Individual Tournament on Monday, Oct. 27. After a long day of competition on the first day, all six advanced for the final rounds to be played later this week.

Aubrey Alcaraz earned a spot in the singles finals, while Izzy Scott earned a spot in the consolation third place match.

The doubles duo of sister Charlotte and Caroline Cooney cruised through the first round to clinch a spot in the finals against Malibu. The duo of Emily Banks and Cailyn Gillen fell in the semifinals, but will advance for a chance to play in the third-place match.

Carpinteria runners take on Mt. SAC Invitational

Carpinteria boys and girls cross country competed at the annual Mt. SAC Invitational at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday, Oct. 24.

Warriors junior Jaqueline Guadian finished higher than any other varsity Carpinteria runner, claiming seventh place overall in the girls Division 5 race with a time of 21:03. Sophomore Mila Martins took fifth overall in the girls sophomore race with a time of 22:15, while freshman Penelope Rowe finished 12th in the freshman girls race with a time of 24:39.

Warriors golfers cap off regular season

Carpinteria girls golf finished off the season with one last Citrus Coast League group match, hosted by Hueneme High School at Seabee Golf Course in Oxnard on Thursday, Oct. 23.

The Warriors took fourth place as a team in the group match with a score of 279.

Nordhoff took the top spot with a score of 264, while the match host Hueneme claimed third place with a team score of 268.

Carpinteria senior Jamaica Cook had finished the previous 10 matches as the overall low medalist, and while she was not the low scorer of all players the final match, she led the team with a score of 47 and secured yet another Citrus Coast League MVP award for her season-long consistency.

“Her play has earned her back-to-back League MVP honors once again and her teammates and I couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments,” said Carpinteria coach Craig Cook. “But what really sets Jamaica apart is her great attitude and her drive to succeed!”

Cook will continue to compete after earning a spot in the CIF Southern Section Individual Tournament this week at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

Cate Rams Roundup

Cate boys water polo suffered a one-goal loss in the final game of the regular season schedule, falling to Thousand Oaks 11-10 in a non-league matchup on Oct. 22.

The Rams still claimed the Tri-Valley League title with a perfect 6-0 record against league opponents, but Cate’s five-game win streak ended in a close battle against Thousand Oaks in the final regular season game before the playoffs.

Cate is scheduled to face Riverside Polytechnic on the road in the first round of the CIF Division 2 playoffs.

“I think this game will serve as a nice wake-up call for our group heading into the postseason,” Cate coach Jesse Morrison said of the loss to Thousand Oaks.

Do we feel like champions?

C R U Z As I sat watching the epic 18-inning Dodgers-Blue Jays World Series game Monday night — the second-longest game in Major League Baseball playoff history, second only to the Dodgers’ 18-inning win in the 2018 World Series — I felt a nagging feeling that something just wasn’t right.

I couldn’t place it at first. My lifelong favorite team was in the World Series, and the little sports fanatic inside me had every reason to be ecstatic to experience a historic game firsthand. On the field, the action was amazing. Shohei Ohtani got on base a record nine times, had four extra-base hits, and smashed two home runs. We saw 19 different pitchers, including late-game heroics from little-known relievers like Will Klein.

As Freddie Freeman walked up to the plate in the bottom of the 18th, six-anda-half hours into the game, the broadcast showed images of the crowd at Dodger Stadium, and it hit me. That feeling that was bugging me was the same one that had been brewing all season long, that uncertainty that someone feels when they love something or someone that doesn’t quite love them back.

I saw many Latino faces in the crowd, wearing Dodger hats and $200 jerseys and sitting in seats that cost a good week’s pay, cheering their hearts out and soaking in the huge moment they were watching. I was reminded that Latinos make up more than 40% of the Dodgers ticket-buying fanbase on any given night, and as a whole Latinos contribute more than $300

million to the Dodgers’ annual revenue.

But that love that Latinos show isn’t reciprocated in any meaningful way.

Sure, I’ve been among those who have celebrated the Dodgers for signing some of the most famous Mexican ballplayers of all time, and for their willingness to court Latino fans with Spanish language broadcasts and mariachi nights. Over the decades, the Dodgers fanbase had even started to forget (if not forgive) the Mexican families that were uprooted in the 50s to make room for the stadium.

It’s surprising what sports fans — myself included — are willing to overlook when their favorite teams are winning.

The recent on-field success of the Dodgers has served as a distraction from the mess that’s happening all around the franchise and in the city of Los Angeles.

Earlier this year the Dodgers began to receive criticism about the organization’s lack of support for the Latino community in Los Angeles. In the summer, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations swept through Los Angeles neighborhoods and the Dodgers were noticeably silent about the situation. At one point, ICE used Dodger Stadium as a staging ground for federal agents.

When fans staged a protest, the Dodgers spun the incident with a press release saying the federal agents were denied entrance to the stadium parking lot, and the next day the organization announced a $1 million donation to support families of immigrants. The announcement, however, did not explicitly acknowledge any of the immigration raids.

More recently, it was revealed that Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter has alleged financial ties to the GEO Group, a private-prison company that runs ICE facilities. These financial ties also link Walter to the surveillance tech firm Palantir, a company that supports ICE’s data-tracking system.

Professional sports is full of reminders about the true nature of business. They don’t love us like we love them. When I spend a full paycheck on a trip to watch a game, it’s just a drop in the bucket to the billions they are bringing in, and the CEO in the front office could probably care less about what the community thinks as long

as the team keeps winning and they keep buying tickets.

There are Dodgers fans out there that feel that same nagging feeling I do, torn between their love for their favorite team and their love for their community.

Business owner Guillermo A. Pinon, of Distrito Catorce in Boyle Heights, has long expressed his love for the Dodgers with artwork in his restaurant.

Pinon recently commissioned a new piece from muralist Sergio D. Robleto, which they thought up together as a “reflection of the struggle of the community coming to terms with the realities of ICE raids,” and more specifically, Dodgers fans’ collective disappointment with how the team has responded in regard to owner Walter.

The painting depicts Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela — a Mexican-born pitcher who became an icon for young Latino fans — handcuffed by a masked ICE agent. Below the painting reads a message: “I Love the Dodgers But I Love My Community More. Community Over Profits.”

I thought about this painting as I watched the final seconds of the Dodgers 18-inning World Series win. Freeman smashed another walk-off home run, and the team took one more step to winning their second World Series in a row. The Dodgers are better now than they have been in my entire life. Everything is lining up, and it should feel great, but I just don’t feel like much of a champion this year.

On habituation

Throughout August into mid-October, a badly wounded seal has been spotted on the seal rookery beach. There are three common threats to harbor seals that may have caused this injury to the pelvic flippers. One is boat-strike which can happen when an inattentive seal encounters a propeller or bow of a fast-moving boat.

A second is entanglement with fishing lines or other ocean trash. And a third is when an exhausted seal sleeps at sea in a position known as bottling, during which they sleep vertically with only their head above water. Sharks or other large ocean predators can readily bite at the dangling pelvic flippers.

What to know

Many people ask about why the seals will be frightened off the beach by beach walkers or loud voices at the Overlook, but not by pier walkers or train horns.

When wild animals become fearful of a potential threat, they watch for signs that the threat is coming closer. For seals, the likelihood of the threat must be weighed against the energy expenditure required to flee into the ocean. Pier walkers and trains never come closer, and the seals

become desensitized. But beach walkers can harm them or separate them from their pups and that desensitization, or habituation, works against natural survival mechanisms. Studies suggest that habituation to humans decreases their fear of natural predators in the wild. The motorboat closes in the fisherman casting lines are tolerated until the seal becomes entangled. And the sharks? The shark may escape detection due to habituation, or due to slowed reflexes. And seals that are forced to sleep at sea do not get sufficient deep restorative sleep.

predator of harbor seal pups) at sites with high levels of boat traffic compared to seals at haul-out sites with minimal boat traffic. We believe these findings provide some of the first evidence to support the hypothesis that habituation to humans reduces aversion to natural predators in the wild. Although harbor seals populations in the Salish Sea are healthy, our findings could have broad management implications for less healthy or less resilient prey species and, with the help of additional long-term studies, may necessitate stricter guidelines for industries that rely on this process as a means of observing wildlife.”
