Surf Happens offers community surf day

Surf Happens Foundation began funding free community outreach surfing days to community youths in 2014 and has offered seven days and served 160 students since the launch of the program. Targeted beneficiaries include youth from lower-income communities and families affected by cancer. In July, the foundation sponsored a free surf day for 15 Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Eureka! Program participants. Eureka! is a five-year college bound program that encourages girls to participate in science, technology, engineering, math and sports. The surf day served as an opportunity to experience a new sport and new way of interacting with the ocean. They learned about ocean safety, tide/wind/swell and surfing history.

JGs of the Week A’s (ages 14 to 17)

Isabella Montes De Oca was chosen for JG of the Week for her long time commitment and work ethic in her group. Isabella missed a week of JGs due to some bad foot blisters from a tough JG workout but that didn’t stop her from placing in first place in the A’s long run in the Carp Competition. Isabella is a fierce competitor and humble JG, always smiling and having fun. Natalie Torres has tremendous work ethic and leadership. When Natalie runs, swims or paddles hard, all the A’s follow and do the same. Her leadership and work ethic has helped set the standard for the A’s group and all other JGs to follow. ––A Instructors

Carpinteria AYSO Strikers celebrating a season of success were, from back left, A. Pakes, K. Seabra, S. Johnson, K. Meza, C. Meister, A. Jimenez and J. Gordon, and from front left, S. Mead, A. Springer, J. Gonella, V. Delk, J. Freeman and E. Gropper.

Kellen Dulcich came out of nowhere and made the flags team last week. He fought through a tough situation at the Carp Comp and had a strong showing in the C’s Flag event. He has impressed all the instructors with his tenacity and work ethic. Marcus Lopez exemplifies many qualities that the Junior Lifeguard program attempts to instill in its kids. Without question he encourages his teammates and even goes as far as to help swim in JGs as he did in one of last weeks workouts. Brandon Rodgers and Calvin Lundy are both incredible athletes, both finishing in top places for multiple events including distance paddle where Brandon took first place. The two friends set an excellent example for the other JG’s, showing them how to compete in top form while also having fun. Emma Holmstrom just plain likes to work hard. She is determined and focused in our workouts and was 100 percent ready to compete hard at every one of her events last Friday at our Carp Competition. Ainslee Alexander is one of our fastest paddlers and placed in the top three in the Carp Comp distance paddle event.

The Carpinteria Triton 16U water polo club captured third place at a tournament at Shaver Lake on July 18.

Water polo has successful Shaver Lake tourney

Carpinteria Aquatics Club sent its Tritons 16U boys squad to a freshwater tourney at Shaver Lake on the weekend of July 17 and 18, and the team posted at 3-2 record for third place. The Tritons opened the tourney on Friday with a 11-10 loss against Conqueror Water Polo. The team made adjustments and fixed mistakes to pick up a 12-3 victory over Ojai in game two. The team won its first game 12-0 on Saturday over the Redwood Rangers and at that point was in a three-way tie for first place. The second game of the day was a war against AMP that involved physical play. “They wanted to win this and they played so hard,” commented coach Matt Organista. In the end, Carpinteria lost 8-7. Organista called it one of the most physical games of water polo he has seen in 10 years. The Tritons concluded the tournament with an 8-0 shutout. Organista stated that the Tritons were the only team to post a shutout, and they posted two.
