Warrior football continues run

Warrior football games relocated to the new Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium in 1999. The first game at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium was a 28-6 win over Fillmore in 1999. Chris Gocong played on that football squad and eventually went on to play profes-

sionally for both the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns. The final team to play at Memorial Field, the 1998 Warrior football squad finished as runners up in CIF. In 2002, the team coached by Coley Candaele picked up a CIF championship and undefeated season. Stars of the 2002 team were Joel Carty (Defensive Player of the Year), quarterback Aaron Gonzales (Offensive Player of the Year), Alani Coleman, Pedro Ramirez, Jorge Gonzalez, Luis Soto and Evan Boardman. The Warriors posted a come-from-behind victory in the championship against Valley Christian. At La Playa Stadium in a cold rain, the team scored on a 4-yard Carty run with 39 seconds remaining to deliver the 25-22 victory.

Boys soccer captures CIF title in 1999

The Warrior soccer team tied Orange Lutheran 1-1 in its CIF Championship match in 1999 to earn a co-championship. Vincent Torres was named the player of the game for Carpinteria, which fell behind 1-0 in the first half. The Warriors netted the equalizer on a corner kick from the foot of Aaron Lopez to Alex Karpenko, who nailed home the score. The teams played to a tie and the championship format was limited on time and prevented a winner from being named. Jeremiah Sobenes coached the team.

2003 girls swimming takes CIF D 4 Title

Warrior boys soccer captured a co-championship in 1999.

Warrior swimmers Emlynn Tursick, Laura Harz, Jaisy Hanson, Jenny Stetson and Sarma Zemjanis made school history by capturing a CIF title. The team edged Quartz Hill, and the championship came down to a make-or-break 4x400 relay. Zemjanis, Hanson, Harz and Tursick blew away Quartz in the final race, and the team captured first or second place in 5-of-12 events. Sean Boyd coached the squad.
