January 11 – The Cate School boys basketball team dropped a game to Foothill Tech by a score of 61-50. marko Pliso got two fouls in the first quarter, but after sitting out the entire first half while the Rams fell behind 32-16, Pliso got back in the game in the third quarter an contributed 11. mason mackall’s eight points in the third also helped trim the lead to 40-39. To start the fourth, Cate took its first lead of the game on a layup by Mackall, but back-to-back three-pointers by Foothill Tech put the game out of reach. The Rams from the free throw line made just nine of 23 with Mackall scoring 17 and grabbing eight rebounds, and Pliso ending up with 16 for the game. “In a game of ups and downs, it was a thriller,” said Cate coach Andy Gil. Cate is now 5-3 and 1-1 in league. January 13 – The Cate School boys basketball team hosted Fillmore in a Frontier league game, coming away with 74-58 win. “Patrick armstrong was awesome tonight, he had a career high 15 points tonight, and was able to disrupt Fillmore’s zone by getting four tip-ins in the first quarter,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Freshman Khadim Pouye knocked down three three-pointers in the third quarter, finishing with 11 in the quarter and the game, giving Cate a 65-46 lead. “marko Pliso had a terrific night, finishing with 25 points and seven three-pointers, and able to find his rhythm which we will need in league,” said Gil. aries Díaz for Fillmore finished with 25 points. January 16 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team beat crosstown rival Cate by a score of 3-2. The Rams scored in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. in the 50th minute, warrior Vincent gonzalez tied the game with his second goal in as many games. Cate scored in the 71st minute to recapture the lead. Then luis garcia converted a penalty kick after a warrior was fouled inside the 18 in the 77th minute. alberto arroyo sealed the come-from-behind victory, converting a free kick from outside the 18 with a shot that took a bounce in front of the Ram keeper and out of reach for the victory.

Girls soccer

January 14 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat Cate School in a Frontier league game, 3-1. Dayne wagner opened the scoring in the first half as she lofted the ball over the Ram keeper’s head from about 25 yards out. wagner then followed it up by putting away a penalty kick about midway through the first half. Cate answered back in the second half with a goal from about 25 yards out as well. Then, elizabeth estrada flicked home a free kick from Wagner for the final goal of the game. “we had a lot of opportunities to put the game away, but Cate just kept battling back and was impressive with how hard they continued to fight for every first and second ball,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant.

Boys soccer

January 16 – The Cate School boys soccer team lost at home to Carpinteria, 3-2. The Rams scored in the 15th minute when captain ryan borchardt made a run from the back and finished a through ball from buba Fofanah. The warriors tied the game, and the two teams went into the half knotted at 1-1 as Cate keeper Cullen barber stopped a penalty kick to keep the score even. Cate struck again in the second half when ben Jessup’s far-post free kick was headed to the middle by captain Christian Herman; and then nodded onto the far post by Harry Corman where Fofanah put the finishing touches on it. Down 2-1, the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick with three minutes to play, which they converted; and the warriors scored again in the waning seconds of the game off a free kick from outside the box. “we just couldn’t find the back of the net to put the game away,” said Rams coach Pete Mack.

January 17 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team defeated Santa Clara in a Frontier league game, 4-0. ava gropper followed a shot from erika estrada, and tucked the ball away to make it a 1-0 game. Dayne wagner netted the second goal on a pass from alejandra alvarez. Kendra meza scored her third goal of the year late in the first half. aisha Duarte finished the scoring in the second half from 18 yards out. Carpinteria is now 6-4 overall and 4-0 in league.

January 12 - The Cate School girls basketball team brought home a 44-30 win against Villanova. elle Smith scored a total of 14 points, while morgan Prinz had 15 rebounds and eight points. amber thiery ended up with eight points, running the offense. Freshmen Piper brooks and maya blattberg scored six and five, respectively. georgia Douglas came in off the bench, and grabbed five rebounds and scored two points. “Daphne mcKeefry and laura Vences also came off the bench ready and aggressive, helping keep the level of play elevated,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta. “The Rams played very tough with a greater level of composure and confidence,” added Venditta. January 17 - The Cate School girls basketball team won against Malibu by a score of 31-15. “The Rams began the game looking tired and lackadaisical,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. Although Cate squandered an eight-point lead in the second quarter, the team still managed to stay ahead. “The efforts of captains amber thiery and morgan Prinz, and sophomore elle Smith helped the Rams begin the second half with much greater intensity,” explained Venditta. morgan Prinz and maisie oswald had six points each. Smith finished with four points, and maya blattberg and Piper brooks each finished with two.

January 13 - The Cate School boys soccer team dropped a match last night at Fillmore, 2-1. The Rams got on the board first in the eight-minute mark when Jack Deardorff sent a throw-in to the box that captain Christian Herman nodded on to baker Fox who tallied his first goal of the year. Fillmore knotted the score in the 47th minute on a free kick from the top of the box. The Flashes took the lead in the 64th minute on a scramble in front of the Cate net. “Our back held together incredibly well with captain ryan borchardt and ben Jessup quarterbacking it,” said Rams coach Peter Mack. Between the pipes, Cullen barber recorded 15 saves. Cate drops to 2-4-1 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
