The false turkey tail mushroom (Stereum ostrea) is a type of fungus that grows in large layered clumps on stumps and logs of deciduous trees, especially oaks. All mushrooms are fungi, not all fungi are mushrooms. Mushrooms are essentially the fruiting body of a fungus. Mushrooms are important in decomposition and they require a substrate that is high in decaying plant material.

This fall, I backpacked in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After several long and wet days of hiking and high-water stream crossings, my ascent to the top of Clingman’s Dome was a slow and arduous one.
Reaching the 6,600+ foot peak was important to me as the pinnacle of this year’s backpacking trip. I was looking forward to seeing the amazingly vast expanse of Southern Appalachian forest that lies along the TennesseeNorth Carolina border from the very top. I was definitely not alone. I was impressed not by the vista (the fog set in and you could not see a thing!), but with the huge number of visitors at Clingman’s Dome that day. Yep, people love national parks. According to N.C. Division of State Parks, North Carolinians are visiting state parks in record numbers (in

PrESErvATION Of SPrINgEr’S POINT IS COmPLETE!
The North Carolina Coastal Land Trust has purchased 8.63 acres at the entrance to the Springer’s Point Preserve on Ocracoke Island, describing the acquisition as the “final puzzle piece” in the protection of Springer’s Point.
“Springer’s Point is an ecological and cultural treasure of Ocracoke and North Carolina,” said Walker Golder, Executive Director of the Coastal Land Trust. “This latest acquisition was essential to protect the overall integrity of the Preserve.”
The newly expanded 132-acre Springer’s Point Preserve permanently protects important and declining habitats of maritime forest and maritime shrub communities, tidal red cedar forest, and estuarine marsh, enhances water quality and protects riparian buffers along the Pamlico Sound and Old Slough, and bolsters the overall ecological integrity and resilience of Springer’s Point Preserve. The Preserve, which overlooks Teach’s Hole, has intriguing local lore as the reputed lair of Edward Teach, better known as SprIngEr’S continued on page 4

This rigorous application process confirms that all of the work undertaken by the CLT adheres to the national Land Trust Alliance’s Standards and Practices.
Accreditation is awarded to land trusts that meet the
highest national standards for excellence and conservation permanence. These trusts are united by strong ethical practices and a commitment to the long-term stewardship of land and conservation easements in the public interest.

“The expansion of Springer’s Point Preserve is about preserving and sharing an intimate, hidden part of what makes Ocracoke unique and magical,” said Lena Austin O’Neal, the Springer’s Point Preserve Steward. “Being able to share the ecological gifts of our island and educating visitors about the importance of saving these special places is vital to a sustainable future for Ocracoke.”
The Coastal Land Trust initially purchased 31 acres at Springer’s Point in 2002. An additional 91 acres was purchased in 2006 and the Coastal Land Trust officially opened the 122-acre Springer’s Point Preserve to the public. In May 2020, the Coastal Land Trust purchased two Pamlico Sound-front tracts surrounded by the Preserve.
“With this latest purchase, the conservation of Springer’s Point, a long-time top priority for the Coastal Land Trust, is now complete,” said Golder.
funding for the project was provided by two u.S. fish and Wildlife Service North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA)
2020, 1.9 million visitors were recorded, 400,000 more than in any other year on record). Demand is equally high for local parks.
Billy Wilkes, Director of Craven County Parks and Recreation, contacted me several months ago and said, “People are calling and requesting more places to hike, ride bikes, and enjoy nature. Can the Coastal Land Trust help?” My response was an immediate, “Yes, yes, we can!”
On November 1, 2021, the Coastal Land Trust did just that by purchasing 105-acres of land along Brice’s Creek in a rapidly developing section of Craven County. The purchase was made possible with generous grants from Bass Pro Shops and the Richard Chapman Cleve fund of the North Carolina Community foundation.
The Coastal Land Trust also tapped its Croatan internal revolving loan fund, a special fund that provides immediate access to funds and allows the Coastal Land Trust to move quickly to secure land. The fund was created through a settlement between N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and Sierra Club over the State’s u.S. 70 Havelock Bypass through the Croatan National forest. This is the seventh conservation purchase the Coastal Land Trust has made using the Havelock Bypass Settlement funds.
Once the internal loan funds are replenished, the 105-acre property, along with 67 acres of neighboring land already owned by the Coastal Land Trust, will be transferred to Craven County to become a new nature park. Stay tuned for news on park planning! Coastal Land Trust has heard the clarion call for more public outdoor spaces to enjoy nature –and we are responding!

Coastal Land Trust has worked with various local governments and landowners to conserve land that has resulted in 8 new local nature-oriented parks: Brunswick County Nature Park, Latham-Whitehurst Nature Park, Oakhurst Nature Park, Havelock’s Slocum Creek and Lewis farm Parks, Airlie Gardens, Piney Ridge Nature Preserve, and now a new park along Brice’s Creek! This does not include the thousands of acres Coastal Land Trust has conserved and transferred to N.C. State Parks and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission to become public parks and game lands.

Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden
I discovered Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden several years ago, while Mr. Rehder was still alive. I love what the Coastal Land Trust has done to take care of it over the years. I love to take friends there and encourage out-of-town visitors to see it while they are here. I have also told my students at uNCW about it and taken carloads of them in the spring.
Now that I am retired, I have even more time to enjoy wildflowers in nature. I appreciate the work the Coastal Land Trust is doing to help conserve our priceless natural coastal lands.

The 2021 Annual Celebration featured Tom Earnhardt discussing North Carolina’s unique flora and fauna. The safe gathering was educational and fun, but we look forward to seeing you in person next year!

By Laurie M. King President, Board of Directors
This year’s Annual Celebration was, in my experience, captivating. While I lamented the missed opportunity to see Old Town in person, I’m so glad we were all able to gather and celebrate the Coastal Land Trust safely, and I look forward to our plans to gather next year.
The joy of our virtual meeting was experiencing Tom Earnhardt’s lecture not only in words, but with the beautiful imagery of North Carolina’s flora and fauna as well. Tom underlined the need to protect North Carolina by highlighting our unique ecosystem: home both to subtropical species not seen any farther North, as well as temperate species not seen any farther South.
Tom’s talk put into perspective some of the Coastal Land Trust’s ‘Big Wins’ of the last year that we jubilantly celebrated later in the evening. Of those, the purchase of Hutaff Island means that this important location for migratory bird populations will be forever protected, and the completion of Springer’s Point Preserve will enable residents and visitors of Ocracoke to enjoy that spectacular piece of land for generations to come.
Achievements such as these are a reflection of many years of dedicated work by the Coastal Land Trust. I am truly humbled by the opportunity to serve as President of the Board, and I look forward to celebrating all that we will accomplish together – supporters, board, and staff –in the year to come!
