Top Tips for Boaters

Book ahead in summer months and during Dartmouth Regatta.

Water taxis are available via Dart Harbour for mid-river moorings.

Tidal awareness is essential when cruising to Dittisham and Stoke Gabriel.

Dinghy access: Always check if there’s a public pontoon or tender dock nearby.

Tips & Advice for Mooring on the River Dart

Know Your Tides

The Dart is tidal up to Totnes, with significant tidal flow, especially around Dartmouth and Dittisham.

Always check tide tables and plan your arrival and departure accordingly, particularly for shallow moorings or slipway access.

Know the Speed Limits

There is a 6-knot maximum speed limit in much of the river.

Observe no-wake zones, especially near moorings, pontoons, and shoreline villages like Stoke Gabriel and Dittisham.

Respect Local Navigation

Keep to the main channel where marked, and note that the river can be narrow and busy.

Be aware of local ferries, such as the Dartmouth–Kingswear ferry, and occasional commercial traffic.

Respect wildlife and habitats, especially in conservation areas upriver.
