New Year’s Eve

Author: Tamara Britten

As 2019 approaches, we look at where best to see in the new year DIANI Diani Beach Festival at Diani Beach Club

D

iani Beach Festival, back for its second year, runs the whole month of December giving you 'a December to remember,' as they say. Skydive Diani, based at Diani Beach Club, will kick off the month with a skydiving boogie. With tandem jumps, solo jumps and the Accelerated Free Fall course, there's plenty to keep adrenalin junkies happy. For those who prefer to keep two feet on the ground – or beach – there's a heap of sporting fun including football, beach volleyball and more. The club is open to all, and everyone is welcome to use the pool, hang out on the beach, enjoy the bar and participate in the many sporting events. 'There will be lots of activities during the day,’ says Sandeep, event organiser, 'And more adult style concerts during the evenings.'

On the 27th December, things start to heat up with a high-end fashion show followed by an after party. On the 29th, the threeday finale to the year starts with the opening party. While there will be international names, the theme of this year's event is 'support Kenya', and the event is showcasing Kenyan talent.

Photo by Diani Beach Club Kenya's most loved band, Sauti Sol, will headline, to be followed by several big name DJs. On the 30th, Jameson Live is hosting live music from a number of bands including Nairobi's Tetu Shani. And on the 31st, the highlight event is sponsored by Pernod Ricard; with a backstage champagne lounge, a VIP Absolut party zone, and a Jameson dance area, there are plenty of places to strut your stuff. WATAMU Rio Carnival at Ocean Sports

O

cean Sports has an action packed silly season planned for all ages. They kick off on 22nd December with a Christmas Craft Fair; with vendors piling in from around Kenya, this is the place to buy all your Christmas gifts. The children get their fun the following day, with a kids' Christmas party and a visit from Santa. Seafarers are the focus on the 27th with a fishing auction, followed by a two-day deep sea fishing competition culminating with prize giving on the 29th: Oh come, all ye anglers and try your hand at this.

The Rio Carnival will be an extravaganza of glitz and glamour. Kicking off on the 31st with a dinner – masks and feathers available – and following up with a party headlining Nairobi's DJ Sumo, with supporting DJs including DJ Btown and DJ Shock; the Bar Factory, Russian Mixologists, will run the cocktail bar. And don't stop there! The New Year's Day party promises to be yet another day filled with fun. Get tickets at : reservations@gmail.com or +254 724 389 732

The fashion show on the 28th starts the main events; don't miss Kenya's finest models sashaying down the catwalk – this will fulfil all your fashion dreams. The New Year's Eve warm-up party steals the show on the 29th, then the action moves to the beach on the 30th for the Watamu Ashes, a beach cricket contest between Ocean Sports and Hemingway's.

KILIFI Beneath the Baobabs at Distant Relatives

K

ilifi has for some years been known up and down the coast for its New Year's festivals – which grow bigger and more flamboyant by the year. This year they too will kick off early, starting on 14th December with Roots Connection Band, a home-grown Roots Reggae band from Nairobi. The reggae theme continues with Reggae Vibes on 27th December: Major Selektas will be playing, with live roots performances from Baraka FM's Natty OJ. Enchanted, on 28th December – the final Friday of the year – offers a sundowner acoustic set followed by DJ sets until 1.

Beneath the Baobabs, the Kilifi New Year Festival, will run from 30th Dec to 2nd Jan. In 20 acres of forests dotted with thousand-year-old baobabs on the shores of Takaungu Creek, the festival promotes freedom of expression, conscious living, nature and creativity. With organic food stalls, Kenyan brews, juices and cocktails, fashion, arts and crafts, and legendary acts from around the world, this festival hits the spot. Expect great music, conscious and sustainable living and the dramatic burning of a huge wooden sculpture. Get tickets at : http://festkt.co/Wg6Rsn

Before the Baobabs, on the 29th, is a warm-up to the main event. A line-up of Kenya's top DJs and musicians takes the stage from 2pm to 2am at Distant Relatives, fusing electronic and live music in what they're calling a 'true sonic adventure in an intimate setting by the coast.’

iani, a small coastal town south of Mombasa, once again will be the lucky hosts to another amazing performance from Sauti Sol, a Kenyan Afro-pop band. The gig is guaranteed to bring in a crowd of fun loving coasties and tourists, all ready to sing and dance the night away to Sauti Sols hits. Songs such as Melanin, Live and Die in Afrika and Rewind will certainly make an appearance on the night and people will for sure be cheering for more long after the show has ended.

Sauti Sol's both national and international success has helped put Kenya on the international music platform. Originally starting as a three piece a cappella group in 2005 with band members BienAimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi, all of whom went to high school together in Nairobi. Soon after guitarist, Polycarp Otieno joined and Sauti (Kiswahili for 'Sound') was formed. They soon wrote their first song, "Mafunzo ya Dunia" (meaning lessons of the world), which was later featured on their first album 'Mwanzo', released in 2008. Shortly after their first song, the band added 'Sol' to their name, a Spanish word meaning 'sun', and Sauti Sol (meaning 'voices in the sun') was born.

Author: Kelly - Marie Martin

Not only has Sauti Sol helped boost international awareness for African artists, in 2012, Sauti Sol began the Soma Soma Initiative at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa. The initiative was set up to advocate education for all Kenyan youths, deeming education 'paramount for a strong foundation for any nation's future' providing opportunities for everyone regardless of 'sociopolitical and economic stratification'. The Soma Soma Initiative’s mission is to ‘inspire and mentor youth on matters pertaining education’.

This year, Sauti Sol announced that they will be retiring and focusing on starting a new record label for other Kenyan artists. Many fans will be sad to hear this news, however, there is light at the end of the tunnel as they have also said that they have not given up performing forever and plan to come back in the future to perform together. Although Sauti Sol will be no more, we all should be excited to see what new talent will come from their new label and to hear more from Kenya's music scene, and we can only hope, with Sauti Sol's expertise and support, these new talented musicians will rise to the heights of Sauti Sol.

Since then they have released a further two albums and have received both local and international recognition, nominated for several awards including Kisima Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act, BET Awards 2015 and many more. Sauti Sols success has not gone unappreciated and in 2015, with the release of their third album, Live and Die in Afrika, the band released the album for free upload for 48 hours as an early Christmas present for their fans, a total of 400,000 downloads were made during this period. Sauti Sol has also performed around the world including a variety of African and European countries, and although they have had to postpone, will also be touring the USA in the near future. Impressively, all four members of Sauti Sol found time during their successful and busy careers to graduate from university, with degrees ranging from Journalism, Actuarial Science and Commerse and Finance. Showing the world they are more than just talented musicians!

Sauti Sol will be performing at the Diani Beach Festival at Diani Beach Club on the 29th December 2018, along with other artists such as Deejay Kace, DJ Skillz and DJ Brooke Bailey. Don't miss out on seeing this talented and energetic group perform, which could be our last opportunity to see them on stage for a while! Tickets available at www.dianibeachfestival.com.

Shore, located in picturesque KiliďŹ on Kenya's north coast, is much

more than a cool and dynamic fashion brand. It is a celebration of

Kenya's amazing natural heritage and a great example of how fashion can be a force for good.

Siblings and 4 Shore founders Larissa and David grew up in Kenya, surrounded by its diverse plants, abundant wildlife and colourful marine ecosystems. Today this idyllic environment provides the inspiration for their clothing designs. 4Shore is all about quality beach clothing that epitomises a youthful, coastal and environmentally conscious culture.

Their designs start life as beautiful drawings and watercolours before being digitally printed onto certiďŹ ed organic cotton clothing using non-toxic water-based inks. 4Shore uses plastic as little as possible, and all items are sent to customers in wax paper or locally made baobab or banana leaf paper when available.

4Shore also works in partnership with 'Green World Campaign' to oset their carbon footprint and to set a positive example to other clothing companies. Together, they plant indigenous or food trees in rural schools and deforested parts of their local area.

4Shore stands in stark contrast to fast and ultimately unsustainable fashion. They want their t-shirts to become "old favourites" that last- for years, not purchased on a whim and thrown out next season. For more information and to check out their e-shop, go to www.4shore.org

THE DIANI NGALAWA REGATTA T

he Diani Ngalawa Regatta, now in its 6th year, is the only event on the South Coast

which showcases traditional local culture. The fishermen from along the beach come

together to race their ngalawas (canoes with outriggers dug out of giant mango trees). Their skill in manoeuvring their boats as they fly across the waves is awesome. You can join the fun by sponsoring a boat, crewing, learning how to sail or just cheering them on. The Indian ocean trade links to the Middle East and India influence the food of nearby islands Funzi and Wasini. Enjoy the snacks or lunch, flavoured with spices, tamarind and coconut, cooked by the women of these islands. There is also a bar and other food stalls. Local handicrafts are for sale - woven mats, hats, baskets etc, lessos (traditional wraps) - and the income from these goes to women’s groups. Local produce is also available and there are stalls featuring various items of local interest. Ladies can have their hair plaited, hands painted with henna and learn how lessos are worn by watching the ‘Mama Lesso’ competition. Join in the Kayamba dance, which is performed at ceremonies to mark important events during the year and get blessed by a traditional healer who will be on hand for consultations. Enjoy a day out at the seaside and celebrate the fascinating history and way of life of Africa’s best beach! We hope very much to see you at Safari Beach Hotel, Diani Beach Road, on 13th January 2019! This event is organised by the South Coast Eco-Tourism Association and supported by the South Coast Residents’ Association. For further information or to sponsor a boat or take a stall please call Gerald 0728 765 764 or Hilary 0714293053
