The 2012 Tall Ships Challenge sets sail May 3-7 WRITTEN BY Calli Arnold PHOTOS courtesy of Visit Savannah

10| COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE

Savannah Riverfront and Visit Savannah will host the 2012 Savannah Tall Ships Challenge May 3–7. The city will welcome some of the most majestic Tall Ships the world has to offer. The event is guaranteed to be one of the most colorful and spectacular ticketed festivals our city has ever seen. Fourteen Tall Ships are confirmed to participate to help Savannah celebrate our rich maritime and nautical history, and to recognize the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. Kicking off on May 3 with the opening ceremonies in downtown Savannah’s Riverfront, visitors will view all the ships, and be able to board many, during the five-day festival, which will also include performances, reenactments, sea shanties, stilt walkers, pirates and more. The full schedule allows visitors to enjoy their own private sailing excursion on participating ships with the Sail-Away Excursion package or to have dinner with the Captain at the Captain’s Dinner, to be held at the Savannah International

Lynx

Lynx is an interpretation of an actual privateer ship named Lynx built by Thomas Kemp in 1812 in Fell’s Point, Md. She was among the first ships to defend American freedom by evading the British naval fleet then blockading American ports and serving in the important privateering efforts.

Peacemaker

The Peacemaker was built on a riverbank in southern Brazil by an Italian family of boat builders, using traditional methods and the finest tropical hardwoods. The ship was first launched in 1989 as the Avany, a name chosen by her designer and owner, Frank Walker, a Brazilian industrialist. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, the American After an initial voyage in the southern Atlantic, Navy consisted of only 17 ships. When a nation they brought the ship up thru the Caribbean to went to war, owners of private vessels were granted Savannah, where they intended to rig her as a special permissions, called “letters of marque,” to three-masted staysail schooner. Other demands prey upon the enemy’s shipping; thus the name captured the attention of the Walker family and “privateers” was born. While rarely engaging enemy during the summer of 2000 the ship was still waiting warships, their impact was felt by English merchants in the Palmer-Johnson boatyard. Purchased by the who insisted on warship escorts for their vessels. To perform this duty, warships were drawn away from engaging the scant American Navy and blockading our coast, and thus did the privateers, motivated by profit, assist in our national defense. Among the Baltimore privateers was the sharp-built tops’l schooner, Lynx. Although captured early in the war, the original Lynx with her rakish profile and superior sailing abilities, served as an inspiration to those ships that would follow.

Twelve Tribes, the ship spent time in various harbors along the southeast Atlantic coast from Beaufort, S.C., to Palm Beach, Fla., until finally settling in Brunswick, Ga. The vision for the ship is to be a seagoing representation of the life of peace and unity in that the Twelve Tribes are living on land in our many communities around the world. It will also provide apprenticeship opportunities for the group’s youth to learn many valuable and practical skills, not only in rigging, sailmaking, sailing, navigation, marine mechanics and carpentry, but also in living and working together in tight quarters, as well as many crosscultural experiences traveling from port to port.

Theodore Too Tugboat

The Tall Ships festival will also feature beloved TV and book character, Theodore Too Tugboat. Theodore Too Tugboat, who resides in Murphy’s Cable Wharf in Halifax, Canada, was originally created by Andrew Cochran, who came up with his brilliant idea one afternoon while walking along the harbor front where he saw two tugboats and a container ship positioned so they appeared to be having a conversation. This prompted him to tell his son bedtime stories of the possible adventures and conversations the tugs might have in the harbor. These bedtime stories soon became the basis for a children’s television show on the CBC network. As the show grew in popularity, so did the requests for more Theodore, leading to the development of Theodore merchandise and eventually the creation of a life-sized replica of the friendly tug. Today, Theodore Too is the official Safe Boating Ambassador for the United States and Canadian Coast Guard and spends much of his time touring the Eastern Seaboard visiting friends and fans. Along with Theodore Too Tugboat, families will appreciate the Kid’s Cove Adventure Area that will be open for children throughout the Savannah Tall Ships Challenge five-day festival. When Rock-N-Roll Gives Back By William McCanless Photos By Tracy Grant I couldn’t tell if I was at a rock n’ roll show, a kids arts n’ craft face-painting marathon, a local charity BBQ, a rowdy, teen’ skate park, or a gigantic artsy hipster party. They all seemed to be going on at once, in one strangely desolate Savannah location more attuned to rough-neck wood workers than a weird, eclectic crowd of foodies, tweens, scene folk, and SCADlings. The Southern Pine Company of Georgia is a sparse, an abandoned landscape of small buildings owned by Ramsey Khalidi, who for the last 25 years has reclaimed, preserved, restored, and supplied vintage old-growth wood for renovation and new construction. On this day in February, however, Khalidi’s do-gooder wood working plant was the spot of, what I thought was going to be an all-daylong powerhouse of rock n’ roll, sweat, blood, and plenty of alcohol-fueled antics. To understand my initial misconception about what I thought I was going to experience at this fest, you first have to understand who was organizing it. This COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE |17

event was put on by Savannah’s own cut-throat sweethearts, The Cusses – a three piece powerhouse of a band. This event dubbed the No Control Festival featured 13 bands that played within a 14-hour period. Yet, what I came across wasn’t the mayhem that I expected. Instead, it was one of the most wonderful examples of rockand-roll giving back to the community and bringing people together. The No Control Festival wasn’t just about the music, in fact, all the bands were more or less just a sound track for the festivities. The Cusses were

18| COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE

able to successfully bring together music lovers of all ages and all backgrounds to one unassuming location that had a little something for everyone. Not only were there multiple vendors set up for food and information on their business, there was an area designated for families with kids to have fun in (if they weren’t already jumping around on the front lines under the music tent). There was even a miniature skate park filled with teenagers listening to music and practicing their skills on a mini half-pipe. Many local artists including Jose Ray, Dr. Z, Andrew Brodhead, Adolfo,

were on hand to create art at the scene. “We just really wanted to celebrate the community and everyone who believed in us and gave us a day to shine,” said Angel Bond in her usual sweet voice as I spoke to her about the origins of the show. Angel Bond and her band mates have worked to put together the festival since November 2011. She said they wanted to do something special for their first record release, but not make it all about themselves. “We brought in bands from all over because we want to help them achieve the success that the community has helped us achieve” she said. “We brought in both local bands and groups out of Atlanta and other surrounding areas, friends of ours who have helped us along the way. After that it was easy to get the vendors and artists on board.” When asked how a skate park showed up in the middle of a warehouse building, Angel laughed.

COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE |21

“Yeah, we actual built that entire thing the night before with extreme help from the guys at Underground Skateboards, especially Andrew Brodhead and Tim Foster. Lots of people came out to help and make that a reality.” Music it seems, isn’t so much about creating stereotypes, as it is about shattering them. As Savannah residents, we should be happy and encouraged that we’re able to take our local goodwill and spread it beyond the bounds of our coastal haven using the vehicles we have fostered ourselves: our music, our artists, our students, and our businesses.

Hometown Highlights Perfect “stay-cation” getaways in your own backyard Photos by Chuck St. Arnaud, Paige Williams, Liberty and Effingham Chamber of Commerce

Savannah is the crown jewel of the Richmond Hill: Coastal Empire. From Tybee’s sandy shores, to the cobblestones of River Street, to the historic homes and moss-draped trees that line its streets, Savannah is a well loved and well known destination. Its storied past and seductive, old Southern charm make it an ideal spot for a weekend respite.

By Chris Sheppard

Richmond Hill is home to the Civil War’s Fort McAllister and tons of coastal fishing, boating and water sports. We’re also the site of Henry Ford’s winter home from the 1930’s, and Richmond Hill has a lot of unique history and architecture thanks But, surrounding Chatham County, in Savannah’s to Mr. Ford. But, even with all of the historic charm backyard, so to speak, are three counties that can we have in Richmond Hill, the place I would most also be called gems in their own rights. its size anywhere. Here are some of the many fun things you can do at J. F. Gregory: • If you are into fishing, there are ponds stocked at various times of the year so you can fish in a quiet setting with the kids. • There is a state-of-the-art children’s playground that is fenced in and has modern play equipment, located right next to clean, well maintained restroom facilities and family picnic areas for a great lunch spot. • Bring your dog (on a leash please) for a run in the wide open, grassy areas of the park. • Take a stroll or a bike ride on the 3.3 mile groomed nature trail, along the back of the park. This trail runs along historic plantation rice dikes. You just can see many varieties of wildlife, including deer and blue heron.

• Have a party in the Wetland’s Educational building. This space holds about 75 people, has a full kitchen, screened gazebo, and is available for rent from Richmond Hill City Hall. Call 912-7563345 for information and to make reservations. * You can attend one of the many fun events that take place in the park each year. Some of these include our Independence Day concert, Holiday Chili Cook-off, and special Veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies. See www.richmondhillvisit.com for a full line-up of events. • Pay tribute to our veterans by visiting the Richmond Hill Veterans Monument, located in the central part of J. F. Gregory Park. • Head out to the park on the third weekend each October to attend the Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival (www.goseafoodfestival.com). At the festival you can enjoy headlining musical acts, a car show, carnival rides, awesome seafood, and more. • Do some bird watching on the birding tower located on the trail at the back of the park. COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE |25

• Host an outdoor event under the pavilion located in the park. This covered pavilion has played host to events from 5 to more than 5,000 people. It’s one of the largest covered pavilions on the eastern seaboard. It is home to the Richmond Hill Farmers Market (www.rhga-market. com), held each Tuesday from April to October. For information on the pavilion and to make reservations call Richmond Hill City Hall at 912756-3345. • If you are looking for a little more luxury in an indoor setting, but with a view of the park to die for, you can also host your event at the Richmond Hill City Center (www.richmondhillcitycenter.com). This venue is the newest addition to J. F. Gregory Park and is a wonderful choice for both business meetings and family celebrations in a quiet, beautiful location. The City of Richmond Hill created J. F. Gregory Park as a special place that all of its citizens can use for fun, fellowship, and to enjoy the natural beauty of our community. It has become the heart of our city, and one of the things that makes Richmond Hill a great place to live, work, and play.

Liberty County has biking, kayaking, camping, fishing, hunting, birding, geocaching, and is home to some of today’s rising musical and art talents. We have many historic sites and tourist destinations, affordable and friendly lodging, charming restaurants, and, above all, our famous Southern hospitality. Liberty County is a land of a raw and haunting natural beauty, where tourists can take a step back in time and experience what our country was like during the revolutionary war all the way to the civil rights movement with nationally registered historic venues. The Midway Museum honors the community famed as Georgia’s Cradle of Liberty. On the property is the Midway Church and cemetery, built in 1756, which was burned during the American Revolution and rebuilt in 1792. In this white-frame, New Englandstyle church, Sherman’s cavalry set up foraging headquarters during the Civil War. The Dorchester Academy and Museum, today an active community center and museum, was founded after the Civil War as a school for freed slaves. By 1917, the fully accredited high school had eight buildings and 300 students. In the 1940s, its academic program ended when a consolidated school for black youth was built in nearby Riceboro. The brick school building, an example of Georgian Revival style architecture, is where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. prepared for the 1963 Birmingham campaign, one of the first major victories of the Civil Rights Movement. Liberty County is home to Fort Stewart and

the 3rd infantry Division, the largest military post east of the Mississippi. At the Fort Stewart museum, Liberty County’s military heritage is showcased in ever-changing exhibits featuring objects from WWII, Desert Storm, and present-day military activities. A must-see is the military museum’s high-tech Gulf War exhibit, one of the largest in the country. It displays artillery, tanks, and small arms captured from Iraq. Outside are 25 tanks and motorized vehicles, most from the Gulf War. The Warrior’s Walk honors those who have lost their lives defending our freedom. Museums, a State Park and historic sites await you in Liberty County’s bustling coastal community.

Effingham County: By: Rick Lott One of Coastal Georgia’s hidden jewels is Effingham County. Settled in 1734 by Salzburger colonists, the town of Ebenezer was established along the banks of the Savannah River. Just minutes north of Savannah and a few miles north of I-95, Effingham County offers year-round fun for the whole family. Bring a canoe or kayak and explore the many miles of blackwater creeks and two large rivers. Snap photos of great blue herons and other abundant wildlife found along the shores. The bass fishing is not bad, either. COASTAL EVENTS MAGAZINE |27

If you’re interested in history, Effingham’s past is on display from the earliest colonial years to the Revolutionary War, through to the Civil War and beyond. Travel past Rincon, down Ebenezer Road until it dead-ends in the Savannah River at the old town of Ebenezer. The Jerusalem Lutheran Church still proudly sits on this historic site and has the distinction of being the oldest continuously used house of worship in the country. The Church building hosted both Revolutionary and Civil War armies and rare Revolutionary–era redouts are still visible on the grounds. Up the road a few miles in the city of Springfield is the Historic Effingham Society’s Old Jail Museum and Living History site. Old farm houses and outbuildings dot the area. During Olde Effingham Days, held in mid-April every year, the Living History area comes alive with military reenactments and locals in period clothing, showing how life was lived in the past. The two day family festival includes food, musical performances, and periodic skirmishes from the Civil War era. Civil War history will come to life in Guyton on Saturday, May 12, when a reenactment of a day in the life of Camp Davis is scheduled. Camp Davis was a Confederate training camp for new recruits in 1862. See training drills, life in the camp, cannon firings, and more. Then, help us celebrate the summer with the Effingham Duck Races, held on Saturday, June 2 at the YMCA pool. You can ‘adopt’ a cute little rubber duckie and cheer him on as a sea of yellow races for the finish line. Contact the Chamber or YMCA for duck sales. The summer fun continues with July 4 celebrations and parades in Rincon and Springfield. Fall is a busy time for community events, as well. Effingham Oktoberfest kicks off the autumn season September 28 and 29. In addition to the great food and beverages, there is great entertainment, fun contests like a homemade apple strudel contest, a best whiskers contest and a best dressed pet contest. There will be a variety of artist booths and children’s activities. The Effingham Oktoberfest celebrates the county’s Austrian heritage and features a great

This event was the brain child of Statesboro’s own Lehman Franklin. “This is a region rich in the arts and musical heritage and there simply needs to be a venue to be able to express and celebrate it,” Lehman said. “We also wanted to do something the whole community can come together on and give, serve and build upon for each other.” A cornucopia of musicians from every genre performed at the event. Country, rock, Christian, blues grass, reggae, funk and southern soul were represented at the show. “Almost all of our bands that performed in the festival have a link to Statesboro,” Franklin said. “Either they grew up in ‘the Boro’ and moved away, have family here, or they are currently living and working in the community.” A sampling of local acts included Evensong, Finnagin’s Father, and Gerald Smith. Ann Walsh, an event sponsor and the owner of Free Spirit Pottery & Glass Studio, dedicated a building to arts and crafts. I admire the people who put it together, and I think that this will be great for the community.” The Music Festival did more than simply bring the community together. It helped the city in term of the economy. “Statesboro is an amazing place,” Franklin said. “It is a very giving, very loving and hospitable place where people truly care for your well being. Ford strives to ensure every member has a positive dining experiences and that isn’t always easy. The wait staff and the kitchen work together to make sure special requests are asked once and remembered each and every time they come to dine. According to the staff, some members enjoy their food scalding hot, while others really, really hate onions. Whatever the need, they find a way to do it. Local Country Club by: Lynn Bettencourt

One of the Coastal Empire’s best kept secrets is the culinary master of Savannah Quarters Country Club, Executive Chef Bruce Ford. Ford is no stranger to creating meals fit for kings. In fact, he has cooked for two Presidents and Vice Presidents of the United States, various celebrities, and even British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Ford has already made an impact on the community with his culinary creations. He said he enjoys preparing food for events such as the Telfair Museum’s The Artful Table, a fundraiser in support of the Telfair Museums in Savannah.

Since 2008, Ford has led the kitchen at SQCC. He creates menus full of classic favorites and features “People who don’t even know we exist and really culinary dishes that wow the palette. TRICKS OF THE TRADE from Executive Chef

Bruce Ford Keep it simple! More often than not, you will fail trying to create some exotic dish that has 14 steps to it. Reduce the steps, keep the food simple and don’t try to make it something it isn’t. There is elegance in simplicity. Go for clean and straightforward flavors, using fresh seasonal ingredients, will give you a much better chance at success than trying to recreate something you saw on a TV Chef show. Work in your comfort zone when cooking for guests and experiment on family; family may not like the end product, but they won’t talk about your failure to the neighbors.
