I am so happy to share a few highlights with you from the Conservation League’s 20212022 fiscal year, which ended on June 30.
Sometimes we achieve conservation success within one year, but more often, it is the result of years (sometimes decades) of false starts, disappointments, breakthroughs, & stick-to-it-ness. Our work at Captain Sams Spit, Bay Point Island, & our work with the Burden Creek community, are all examples of long fought efforts. Thank you for sticking with us & supporting us throughout the journey.

As I look back at our successes over the last 12 months, I can’t help but also look forward to the wonderful things to come as we welcome a new Executive Director, Faith Rivers James, to the organization. We are looking forward to her leadership & expertise as we continue to tackle threats to our coast.

OAKVILLE
FOOD ACCESS
We have worked diligently in South Carolina to improve access to solar energy, a cleaner & less expensive alternative to fossil fuels. South Carolina now has the highest installed watts for solar energy per customer (the “solar ratio”) & the highest penetration of rooftop solar in the region.
The South Carolina Ports Authority will not renew its home port contract with Carnival Cruise Lines & will only host port of call ships at the existing cruise terminal when Carnival’s contract expires at the end of 2024. The SCPA has since withdrawn state authorizations to build a new cruise terminal at the north end of Union Pier, ending nearly a decade of litigation.
Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary in the Charleston Harbor has been restored to 32-acres of nesting area using material dredged during the harbor deepening project. Birds are now nesting on Crab Bank for the first time since 2017.

We are promoting sales tax programs in Beaufort, Berkeley, and countiesDorchestertoincrease protected greenspace.
After working with conservation partners & community members since 2018, Oakville, a 137-acre property on Johns Island, adjacent to the Burden Creek community was successfully preserved & protected. The property, on which 400 homes would have been built, is now permanently protected with a conservation easement.

We are fighting both a sand mine & a proposed hospital complex near Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve. operationsThesewould limit the use of prescribed fires & interfere with the unique biology of this woodpeckers.&Venusincludingarea,flytrapsred-cockaded
At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, GrowFood Carolina looked for ways to help farmers find markets for their produce while bringing fresh, local food to families that lack access to it. Through several programs & partnerships, GrowFood has distributed 750,000 pounds of food to families in need.
