I first want to say thank you to the other six Coastal Bend College (CBC) Board of Trustees members for the vote of confidence and allowing me to serve them as Board President for the next few years at CBC. CBC, as my dad has always said, is the best kept secret in the area. The first thing I intend to do is make sure it is not a secret anymore. Coastal Bend College is changing lives and families in our region, and we need to make sure everyone knows about the opportunities it can provide for them. One thing I have learned during my eight years as a trustee is that this role provides a unique insight on growing a community. As a community college our role is to serve the student population by serving as an engine that drives academic success for an end game of a viable and employable graduate. With that, we get citizens that join us in making a better community for all. Our job as trustees is to be a trustworthy steward for the citizens of Bee County and our service district. Coastal Bend College serves as a nexus between the local communities that we serve and the many stakeholders that we have. These stakeholders include: •
Taxpayers of Bee County and community members of our service area who wish to be life-long learners
•
Students that want to be the skilled workers essential for our economic growth
•
Employers who need additional skilled workers
•
Dedicated faculty and staff that work tirelessly to facilitate our students’ needs
•
Independent School Districts that rely on CBC to provide higher education to their students
Coastal Bend College is doing wonderful things under the leadership of Dr. Beatriz Espinoza. She has been at the helm of the college for four years. During that time she and the board have: • Leveraged partnerships for increasing services and decreasing tax payer costs, such as having a joint athletic facilities use agreement with BISD, and partnerships with Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, Bee County Adult Literacy, Women’s Shelter of South Texas Safe Campus program, Angel Care and HALO Flight; • Increased dual enrollment with seven Early College High Schools in 2014–16, 39 ISDs, enrolling over 2,000 students per term, and graduating high school students with certificates and degrees. •
Added undergraduate research in the areas of Biology, Computer Science, and Drafting;
• Obtained and maintained accreditation from SACSCOC, the Texas State Board of Nursing for LVN and RN programs, JRCERT for radiologic technology, CODA for dental hygiene, and AWS certification testing for welding. The team of eight at the helm of CBC takes its responsibilities to serve the students and our communities seriously and to heart. As we start planning for the next school year, I encourage our citizens to engage in activities at CBC and let us know other things that might enrich the collegiate experience for our students and/or our citizens.

CBC Student Selected to Visit NASA this summer oshua Crouch of Coastal Bend College in Beeville has been selected to travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center this summer to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars project (NCAS). Crouch, a native of Kenedy, has been selected as one of 216 community college students from across the U.S. to be part of NCAS. The five-week scholars program culminates with a four-day on-site event at Johnson Space Center and offers students the opportunity to interact with NASA engineers and others as they learn more about careers in science and engineering. While at NASA, students form teams and establish fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. Each team is responsible for developing and testing a prototype rover, forming a company infrastructure, managing a budget, and developing communications and outreach. The on-site experience at NASA includes a tour of facilities and briefings by NASA subject matter experts. NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars is a project funded in part by the Minority University Research and Education Program, or MUREP, which

is committed to the recruitment of underrepresented and underserved students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to sustain a diverse workforce. With this project, NASA continues the agency’s tradition of investing in the nation’s educational programs. It is directly tied to the agency’s major education goal of attracting and retaining students in STEM disciplines critical to NASA’s future missions, which include missions to Mars and beyond. “NCAS not only inspires community college students to advance in STEM fields, but it also opens doors for future careers at NASA. NCAS has a legacy of alumni moving from NASA internships to and ultimately entering the NASA workforce. Beloved pageant returns in honor of College’s 50th anniversary. ast year was a momentous year for Coastal Bend College as it celebrated turning 50 years old. A lot has happened in those 50 years, but one of the most popular and nostalgic traditions is when the College hosted its Miss BCC (Bee County College) scholarship pageants in the 1980’s-1990’s. It seemed fitting to bring back such a popular event, and in doing so CBC has its own royal family making appearances at parades, college functions, and community events. The six CBC students who earned a spot on the 2015-2016 pageant court are diverse — we have a Brit from the UK, several student athletes, a pep band member, and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) students. They had to model both career and formal wear outfits in front of judges and a live audience, and they had to write an essay which accounted for 50% of their overall score. Each student was awarded a CBC scholarship for the academic year.

CBC students receive $40K from Barnhart Foundation
CBC Foundation 50 for 50 Giving Campaign Scholarship Recipients The Coastal Bend College (CBC) Foundation recently awarded students at all CBC locations with over $17,000 in scholarship funds as part of its 50 for 50 Giving Campaign. The CBC Foundation scholarships were merit based and selected by the CBC Foundation Scholarship Committee. The campaign was part of the College’s 50th anniversary giving campaign in 2015. The scholarship funds are comprised of donor, employee, and gala sponsorships/contributions.

Each spring semester, the Barnhart Foundations holds a scholarship competition for CBC students who are planning to transfer to a four-year university, have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA), and have exemplified qualities pertaining to leadership and community service. Students must write an essay and answer several questions pertaining to their career goals and character. Four student finalists are then chosen from all the applications received for one-on-one inperson interviews with the Barnhart Foundation to determine the scholarship recipient(s). This year, the Barnhart Foundation awarded each of the four finalists with a $10,000 transfer scholarship. “We’re immensely proud of our students, and we’re grateful to the Barnhart Foundation for finding each of the finalists worthy of receiving a scholarship. Making a $40,000 investment in CBC students speaks volumes about the caliber of students we have,” said Nora Morales, director of financial aid. Congratulations to Chelsea Alvarado (Beeville) who is transferring to the University of Texas San Antonio to major in kinesiology; Colter Dees (George West) who is transferring to the University of Texas at Austin to become a pharmacist; Shan Liu (Beeville) who is transferring to the University of Texas at Austin to major in business/accounting; and Mary Jane Luther (George West) who is transferring to Texas A&M College Station to major in accounting. CBC Foundation awards Faculty Innovative Teaching Grants
Coastal Bend College (CBC) is committed to enhancing the instruction and learning environment for all students through innovative instruction methods. Several of CBC’s faculty members received extra funding thanks to Innovative Teaching Grants sponsored by the CBC Foundation. The Foundation would like to congratulate Cynthia Newton, assistant professor of cosmetology; Jarod Bleibdrey, assistant professor of criminal justice and history; Leonard Scott, assistant professor of computer information technology; and Kenneth Nagle, adjunct continuing education instructor, on being selected as the spring 2016 Innovative Teaching Grant recipients. CBC’s workforce and academic faculty members are eligible to apply for the Innovative Teaching Grant. All submitted grant proposals are reviewed and selected by the CBC Foundation Board of Directors. Technology in the Classroom/Lab Cynthia Newton, CBC assistant professor of cosmetology, is redesigning the technological features of the cosmetology classrooms and labs at the CBC Pleasanton location. CBC Pleasanton’s cosmetology program redesign will feature modern technology such as iPads. Clients who visit CBC Pleasanton’s Cosmetology Salon will now have the opportunity to access a visual aid while they search for their desired service.
Students will also have the opportunity to post their work to social media as well as keep a record of it for their cosmetology portfolio. Posting his or her work to social media will demonstrate each student’s talent as well as build clientele. In addition, students will also have access to the iPads while they complete Blackboard assignments and practice for the Texas Department of License and Regulations (TDLR) licensure exam. “This learning tool will increase the success of our students,” Newton said. “Utilizing the latest technologies will assist with the recruitment, retention, and completion of CBC Pleasanton’s Cosmetology students.” Career Realization Jarod Bleibdrey, CBC assistant professor of criminal justice and history, is utilizing the Bee County Sherriff’s Office and the Beeville Police Department for a job shadowing research project. The job shadowing process will assist 30 students, who are enrolled in CJLE 2420, determine which branch of law enforcement they would like to pursue. During the job shadowing process, students are responsible for an activity log that they will complete daily. Students must document all calls, events, and disturbances that take place while participating in the job shadowing project. “By offering the students a true view of the realistic daily routine of law enforcement officers, the students will better understand the occupation and dispel the stereotypical viewpoints,” Bleibdrey said.

Augmented/ Virtual Reality Leonard Scott, CBC assistant professor of computer information technology, and Kenneth Nagle, CBC continuing education adjunct instructor, have teamed up to create augmented/virtual reality systems for use in classrooms, orientations, special events, robotic navigation, and hands on virtual labs. Students who are enrolled in Game Design I, Game Design II, and 3-D Animation will be provided with augmented/virtual reality equipment. This state-of-the-art equipment will provide students with insight on the emerging technologies that are utilized by professionals in the computer information technology industry. Students will showcase and provide an understanding regarding augmented/ virtual reality by creating demonstration environments. Overall, the augmented/ virtual reality systems will assist students in honing their computer programming and/or game design skills. R.W. Dirks’ Challenge 2016 R.W. “Bill” Dirks has been a champion and pioneer for Bee County College, and subsequently Coastal Bend College, since he joined the Board of Trustees in 1971. He was involved in laying the foundation for a robust, student-centered institution to educate and serve the South Texas region.

Mr. Dirks served his community and the college as a trustee for 37 years. His children attended BCC/CBC and his daughter Laura Fischer currently serves as the President of the CBC Board of Trustees and the CBC Foundation. Over the course of his decades of service, Mr. Dirks has donated over $170,000 to the college, “I am very much in support of the college, because Coastal Bend College is the best thing that has ever happened to this community.”

Mr. Dirks’ most recent donation of $25,000 came in 2015 as a way to honor the college’s 50th anniversary celebration. As part of his donation, Mr. Dirks issued a challenge to supporters and friends of the college to collectively match his donation, and thus the R.W. Dirks Challenge was born. Now through August 31, 2016, Mr. Dirks will match all donations to the R.W. Dirks Challenge up to $25,000. Mr. Dirks’ challenge is all about investing in our future workforce and improving the quality of life in our community with a more educated citizenry.

s a small community college, Coastal Bend College (CBC) strives to provide students with high quality, hands-on educational opportunities. One of the most recent opportunities came from the Reenergize Renewable Energy Research & Education Partnership (Reenergize Grant) with Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. This grant partnership is designed to generate an interest in undergraduate research pertaining to renewable energy resources. Students participating in the grant have three renewable energy areas of focus to choose from: solar and wind energy research; bio-fuels and water treatment research; and waste heat capture and fuel cell research. Currently, three small groups of CBC students are conducting experiments and research about their topic. Each of the groups is supervised and guided by a CBC faculty member who has experience in that specific area of study. Students who participate in the project are responsible for generating a hypothesis, creating the required environment for the experiment, conducting the experiment, collecting the data, and reporting on their findings in a presentation format. All of their experiments and research is conducted throughout the academic year in the College’s state-of-theart science laboratories.
ALGAE & BIO FUELS PROJECT
Emily Hinojosa, a sophomore at CBC, was the first student to join the project. In fact, Hinojosa is the first student to conduct any undergraduate research at the College. CBC’s Dean of Academics Mark Secord chose her to participate because she is an exceptional student who is eager to learn about science. “I knew that she would see the project through,” Secord said. “Some students just stand out.” Hinojosa is researching ways to grow algae, extract/harvest the lipids, and convert them into a bio fuel that can replace gasoline and power vehicles. Bio fuels are growing in popularity and production according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administation. In December 2015, U.S. production of biodiesel topped over 108 million gallons— a 2 million gallon increase over November’s production. Before beginning her own research, Hinojosa read through large amounts of research materials pertaining to algae growth and conversion into bio fuels. “There were no directions on how I should or shouldn’t do my experiments, so I basically came up with everything on my own after researching best practices at other institutions,” Hinojosa said. Eventually she decided to model her experiments on research that was conducted by Montana State University. She chose to base it off of their research because it took them 11 years to perfect the science behind it.
“The extra research and reading that I have done for my research has helped me develop my critical thinking and high-level reading comprehension skills,” Hinojosa said.
ABSORPTION REFRIGERATOR
Joshua Crouch, a freshman at CBC, is another Reenergize Grant researcher. His group’s experiment is based on an electricity generating absorption refrigerator’s ability to constantly cool water in order to prevent a solar panel from over heating. Essentially, the cooled water helps the solar panel run efficiently. A variety of experiments regarding this specific topic exist, but Crouch and his peers opted to put their own theories to the test. They purchased the required equipment including a refrigerator, solar panels and additional electrical equipment. The students’ research set-up is behind the Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building at CBC Beeville. The solar panels have temperature sensors behind them and the information that is gathered is sent to a computer that is constantly logging updates for the students to analyse. Crouch and his peers are hoping to create a self-sustaining cooling system for solar panels. Essentially, water is run and cooled through the refrigerator. The chilled water is then funnelled to the solar panel to help cool it off and keep it running efficiently. Overheated solar panels run less efficiently and have shorter lifespans than properly regulated panels according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Crouch adds, “Being able to work on these experiments helps me apply my love and passion for engineering outside of the classroom. This has helped me tremendously since I plan to transfer to a university.” Overall, the Reenergize Grant hopes to generate an interest within CBC’s students. The grant and the College would like to facilitate a

direct pathway from an associates degree, bachelor’s degree and doctoral degree. In order to accomplish this goal, the grant must generate an interest for undergraduate research at the community college level. “The Reenergize Grant opened me up to research and helped me decide the university I want to transfer to,” Hinojosa said. “I’m glad that I was able to experience this level of research at CBC before transferring to a university.”

CBC Takes Welding Training on the Road A Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant worth $277,000 has helped Coastal Bend College (CBC) provide its students and industry partners with a new stateof-the-art Welding Technology Trailer. The welding technology trailer is the latest addition to CBC’s growing fleet of mobile classrooms – CBC also has two nursing simulation trailers and an oil and gas
process technology trailer. The trailer will be utilized at all four CBC locations in Beeville, Alice, Kingsville and Pleasanton, in addition to being available to the over 38 dual enrollment high schools and businesses in a 16 county area. The Welding Technology Trailer is equipped with top of the line Lincoln Electric equipment that is used in the
welding industry. The trailer currently features eight Power Wave C300 MultiProcess Educational Ready-Paks, two Power Wave S350’s and one Torchmate 2X2 CNC Prototyping System/ Tomahawk 625 Plasma Cutter. The main highlight of this trailer is its ability to take high quality, college level welding courses on the road to rural communities. Students will be able to earn marketable skills achievement awards, Level I and II certificates, and earn credits toward an associate of applied science degree. Individual welding booths allow students to work one-on-one with the equipment used in welding shops today. Hands on training will focus on several types of welding: shielded metal arc welding (stick welding), gas tungsten arc welding (TIG), gas metal arc welding (MIG), flux core arc welding and plasma cutting. These courses and trainings, many of which can be completed in weeks as opposed to traditional college semesters, will make students ideal candidates for entry-level welding careers and provide customized training to the industry. In the Coastal Bend region, entrylevel welders earn an average of $21.37 per hour according to the United States
Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics 2014 data. The increase in recent years in oil and gas related occupations has created opportunities and demand for highly skilled welders in the region. CBC is an American Welding Society (AWS) School Excelling through National Skill Standards Education (SENSE) Training Organization. The CBC welding technology curriculum is aligned with the requirements found in the AWS SENSE specifications and guidelines. Trainees that complete a SENSEcompliant training at CBC are eligible to receive an AWS Sense Certification and wallet card that is valid throughout the nation. CBC is currently working on becoming an American Welding Society (AWS) testing facility. CBC’s welding technology curriculum is also aligned with standards set by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Former CBC airframe student soars to success
Choosing to deactivate Coastal Bend College’s (CBC) airframe and powerplant technology programs in May 2015 was not an easy choice for the administration to recommend and the CBC Board of Trustees to make.
he Board’s decision came after a thorough analysis of the program’s viability and sustainability, as well as input from representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a required certification for the program to exist. At the time, students were understandably upset at the decision after they had spent weeks advocating to keep their program active. However, nearly a year later, things couldn’t be brighter for one of CBC’s former airframe students. Cody Potts was one of the students affected by the deactivation of the program. Now he’s wrapping up his first year in the airframe program at Midland College (shown in photo to left). In Midland, he has access to three airports to gain hands-on skills to supplement what he’s learning in the classroom. Potts works as a line technician and customer service representative at Odessa Schlemeyer Field. As a line technician, he fuels, marshalls and tows planes. “Access to these airports and opportunities in Midland was the main advantage over Beeville. I even started my own business up here, C&L Plane Wash, where I detail planes and restore leather. It came about after I saw a demand and need for it,” Potts said. “I also manage two King airplanes and a Cessna Citation jet. I prepare their flight schedules and keep them clean. It keeps me busy, that’s for sure.” Potts was quick to acknowledge that the guidance he received from CBC’s Vice-President of Instruction, Dr. Kyle Wagner, helped him get to where he is today. Wagner assisted Potts with transferring to Midland, and Wagner also keeps in touch to check on his progression in his courses. CBC provided monetary assistance for transitioning students in the program to an accredited and certified Texas community college. In Potts case, the assistance helped Potts move to Midland and pay for his courses. This helped Potts land on his feet a bit quicker after a trying spring 2015 semester. “I talked closely to the president (Dr. Beatriz T. Espinoza) when this was all happening last year. She was understanding and professional, and ultimately you could tell she wanted what was best for the students,” Potts said. “If you would work with them (administration) they would work with you.” Looking forward, Potts plans to graduate from Midland College and transfer to a four-year university to major in operations management. United Airlines has reached out with a job offer, but for now Potts is preparing to take his written/oral airframe exam to obtain his license at the end of summer 2016. “I do believe everything that happened in Beeville was for the best. CBC really tried to accommodate all of us as best as possible, and I really appreciate that. Change can be good.”

PLEASANTON Coastal Bend College’s (CBC) partnership with Workforce Solutions spans several years—the Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend’s (WFSCB) Beeville Career Center opened on CBC Beeville’s campus back in 2014. Locations at CBC’s Alice and Kingsville locations soon followed in 2015. It was only natural to complete the integration by welcoming Workforce Solutions Alamo (WFSA), which serves the greater San Antonio area, to the CBC Pleasanton site. A ribbon cutting was held in March to celebrate the partnership. Their new career center boasts several computer stations for job/ career seekers, a state-of-the art training and conference room, and plenty of friendly, knowledgeable staff to help job seekers. Some of the services offered at WFSA include job development and placement assistance, career counseling, financial assistance for training, and job search workshops on resume writing, job applications, and more. The partnership between WFSA and CBC also helps remove barriers for prospective students and job seekers by providing information about courses, training and job seeking all under one roof. Students can visit with a CBC advisor and then visit the career center about 25 feet away. With the recent decline in
Workforce Solutions Alamo joins CBC family opportunities available in Eagle Ford Shale related industries, WFSA serves an important role in helping affected workers find gainful employment. “We have numerous industries that are seeking to hire dislocated workers from the Eagle Ford Shale such as construction, manufacturing and logistics, to name a few. The skills sets are easily transferable. We are working to transition those seeking assistance to those available jobs,” said Eva Esquivel, director of external relations for WFSA. CBC President Dr. Beatriz T. Espinoza views the partnership as a way to not only impact the Pleasanton job market, but also Texas’ as a whole, “Texas is in an excellent position to have jobs for workers. The students received a guided tour of the College’s facilities/programs, visited the process technology, nursing and welding mobile training units, and received assistance with the CBC Admissions Application. Over 100 students attended the annual Cougar Day New Student Orientation held in Pleasanton. Cougar Day is a new student orientation that is part of the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to increase student success and retention rates. Although Cougar Days are typically held in the summer, CBC transitioned to offering them in the spring semester to reach high school seniors earlier. Students at Cougar Day attend various breakout sessions designed to equip them with knowledge and tools to navigate the CBC admissions, financial aid and advising process. Cougar Day data has shown that students who attend a Cougar Day event are more likely to succeed in their first year of college. High schools in attendance included Poteet High School (seen above with State Representative Ryan Guillen), Charlotte High School, Jourdanton High School, Pleasanton High School and Stockdale High School. The keynote speaker for the event was State Representative Ryan Guillen who spoke about the importance of education. Born to two public school educators and after losing his mother and step-dad to a tragic car accident at a young age, Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen has dedicated his adult life to public service to “try to make a difference in the short time we have on Earth.” Guillen has been in office since 2002. “Learning is a lifelong endeavor. There’s no classroom or institution that can teach you as much as you can learn by just listening to what’s around you. Every moment has something to teach you. It will foster innovation and lead you down paths. Listening is the most enlightening thing you can ever do in your life. Without inspiration there is no success,” Guillen said. CBC Kingsville inducts new cohort of PTK students Coastal Bend College’s (CBC) Rho Lambda chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) hosted a spring induction ceremony at the CBC Kingsville site for its newest members on Thursday, April 14. PTK is an international academic honor society that promotes scholarship amongst two-year college students. PTK provides students with the opportunity to develop a specific skill set focused on honor, leadership and service. In order to be eligible for PTK membership, students must successfully complete 12 credit hours and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Once a student has successfully completed all specified requirements, they are invited to join CBC’s Rho Lambda chapter of PTK. The Safe Campus Project of the Women’s Shelter of South Texas provides free, comprehensive, and confidential services for female and male victims of sexual assault while educating the community on the prevention of sexual violence.
A victim advocate will be available at regularly scheduled times on each campus, and when requested, to respond to primary and secondary sexual assault victims. In 2015, the Women’s Shelter of South Texas provided free, comprehensive services to over 2,500 adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence across a twelvecounty service area in South Texas. Almost half of those served were children. The Safe Campus program of the Women’s Shelter of South Texas is committed to preventing and responding to sexual assault on campus, off campus, anytime, and anywhere. ”We are excited about the opportunities to launch our Safe Campus initiate with Coastal Bend College. Our goal is to make services for sexual assault victims more accessible and to start the conversation in each community about preventing this violence before it ever begins. Buegeler is Orange Grove’s first dual enrollment student to earn Associate of Arts degree Coastal Bend College (CBC) Dual Enrollment student Triston Daniel Buegeler recently graduated with an Associate of Arts at the College’s annual commencement ceremonies. He is the first Orange Grove High School (OGHS) dual enrollment student to graduate from CBC. CBC’s Dual Enrollment Program provides eligible high school students with the opportunity to earn college credit while they are still in high school. This opportunity will jump-start their college career and shorten their time to college graduation, while also reducing their future college expenses. As a participant in the dual enrollment program, students have the opportunity to pursue transferrable college credit and/or obtain an associate’s degree or workforce certificate. Buegeler is currently in the top 25% of his senior class with a 97.53 grade point average and has maintained a position on the academic honor roll for all four years at OGHS. His extracurricular clubs/activities at OGHS include Future Doctors of America, High School Tech Club, Student Council, Texas Ancient Free & Accepted Mason, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, OGHS varsity football team, and OGHS band member. Upon completion of his high school career in June, Buegeler plans to attend San Houston State University (SHSU) where he will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Pleasanton student Maria Moreno appears in Church’s Loves San Antonio documentary Life’s been pretty exciting for Coastal Bend College student Maria Moreno this spring. She recently graduated from CBC Pleasanton, was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, and became the star of a short-documentary titled Church’s Loves San Antonio. In honor of its 64th anniversary, Church’s Chicken® is returning to its Texas roots and celebrating the birthplace of its very first restaurant - San Antonio, TX. As part of the “Church’s® Loves Communities” campaign, the brand released a short documentary highlighting San Antonio, the people who live there and everything that gives it character. The “Church’s Loves San Antonio” documentary is now available on Churchs. com and Church’s official YouTube page. “At Church’s, we love, respect and value the communities we call home, and have been demonstrating that since our inception in 1952,” said Mark Snyder, Chief Marketing Officer for Church’s Chicken. “Our ‘Church’s Loves Communities’ campaign provides a platform to showcase the essence of key cities and neighborhoods we serve and our team members who add great value to both our restaurants and these areas. As the original hometown of our brand, it was natural to put the spotlight on San Antonio, especially during our anniversary.”
The “Church’s Loves San Antonio” documentary is the second installment of the series. Church’s first film cast the spotlight on Compton, CA earlier this year. Each documentary tackles issues and elements of progress within the cultural makeup of the community. The San Antonio short features the issue of immigration. As the U.S. city with the largest Hispanic population, it generated topics of immigration in conjunction with family, work ethic and Mexican-American culture. This latest film takes viewers on this journey from the perspective of a 19-year-old Church’s Employee Scholar who resides in the greater San Antonio area. HALO Flight moves Alice operations to CBC Alice
HALO Flight will begin offering EMT courses in August 2016 ribbon cutting ceremony was held on April 12 in honor of HALO-Flight, Inc.’s new operations at the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Alice site. HALO-Flight’s mission is to provide emergency medical transport for critically ill or injured persons requiring medical or trauma facilities within their South Texas service area. Emergency assistance is provided to all persons regardless of their ability to pay. All transports are staffed by specially trained medical crews and outfitted with the very latest in emergency medical equipment. The arrival of HALO-Flight to the CBC Alice site pairs well with CBC’s current allied health course offerings. CBC’s nursing education division offers phlebotomy, certified nurse’s aide (CNA), licensed vocational nursing (LVN), and registered/professional nursing (RN) courses.
Custom training and continuing education courses are also available related to the health industry. HALO-Flight and CBC are working together to provide training for emergency responders beginning in August 2016. The course length is approximately six months. Classes are held three nights a week: Monday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. There will be some Saturday labs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the course. The course consists of 210 classroom hours, plus 24 hours of hospital clinical internship and at least 48 hours of precepted ambulance rotation. Prerequisite for entry is a high school diploma or GED and a minimum age of 18 by the end of the course. A criminal background check will be required of all students. CONGRATS, 2016 GRADS! Each year CBC’s graduating class gets larger, and this year’s grads earned nearly 800 certificates and degrees. Coastal Bend College’s (CBC) 2016 commencement was the largest to date. Over 400 graduates combined walked the stage in two ceremonies, and the audience numbered well over 2,000 friends, family members and loved ones. This year’s commencement speaker and the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year was Bee County Judge Stephanie Silvas, seen left taking a selfie with CBC President Dr. Beatriz Espinoza and our 2016 afternoon grads. Judge Silvas enrolled at CBC after finding out her sister was diagnosed with San Diego High School Graduates breast cancer. Initially, Judge Silvas was enrolled at a university, but ultimately learned that coming back to “this little gem [CBC] back home” was the best thing she did for her education and her family. After completing her education at CBC, she transferred and earned her bachelor’s degree at Texas State University. Judge Silvas went on to complete her doctorate of Juris Prudence in 2011 at Western New England University School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was appointed Bee County Judge on May 11, 2015 during the Bee County Commissioners’ Court Regular Term Meeting by a unanimous vote and is the first female judge in Bee County.
