DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com

DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds
or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.
DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. Florida Keys
DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. F
ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. I
t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

eef Runner Boats recently unveiled its new Battle Breast Cancer Boat, which will be raffled at the Miami International Boat Show in February to raise money for Susan G Komen for the Cure (SGK). This is the second year the Miami-based boat builder has raffled a brand new boat for the foundation, and Reef Runner owner Donna Milo said they hope to raise $20,000 with this year’s raffle. Since its founding in 1999, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK has invested nearly $11 million in local breast cancer awareness projects, such as education programs, funding for patient screening, diagnostics and treatment. S
nook season is closed, however you can still catch and release. Greenbacks are still the bait of choice. We have also been catching them on fresh cut bait lying on the bottom. Anglers using live bait should have no problem finding plenty of greenbacks, threadfins, or pinfish. It’s not uncommon for a juvenile snook to chase down a greenback, but the larger fish are usually neutral in pursuing a fast swimming greenback. Instead, they seem content to take damaged or dead bait off the bottom. Redfish are also closed, but you can still catch and release. Redfish seem to be on every grass flat and also eating live and dead baits. We are catching plenty of nice sized fish. The broken bottom grass flats, submerged oyster bars and mangrove shorelines throughout the mid and upper Tampa Bay seem to be holding hungry redfish. Greenbacks, dollar size pinfish, big shrimp, or fresh cut bait along with some good old-fashioned fishing patience seems to do the trick.
Spotted Sea Trout action is on the upswing with good reports when fishing strong tide days around deeper grass flats. They are eating freelined shrimp under a popping cork and freelined greenbacks. Deeper flats and good moving water, in or out, prove deadly in catching nice Trout. If you are interested in something different, perhaps it is time to try artificial lures. Fall and winter are great times to use them. They give fish a look at something totally different--like color, shape, and action or a combination of all might entice them to strike. Some lures float, some dive, while others suspend, but all usually require a learning curve. If you’re an artificial lure angler, topwater lures do well on early morning grass flats. My topwater lures include MirrOLure Top Dogs or Catch 2000 and are loads of fun, especially the unanticipated strike when the explosion from beneath almost stops your heart. Cobia can show up on the back of large rays and manatee. Check buoys and markers and keep an eye out when mackerel fishing, especially if you’re using a chum bag. Have a slightly heavier rig ready, because they tend to pop up at the most inopportune times--like when you are not ready.
Mackerel action should remain strong. Look for diving birds and you have probably found a school of mackerel, jacks, or ladyfish. Also, look for schools of threadfins or glass minnows and you will usually find the same thing. Try using 40-pound to 50-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader with long shank #2 or #3 Daiichi hooks. Free line the baits in the current with a #3 split-shot weight. Mangrove Snapper has flooded Tampa Bay grass flats, bridges, markers, and docks. Try fishing with small greenies and shrimp, as they should produce some nice sized fish often tipping the scales around 1 to 3 pounds. ishing on the west coast of Florida is almost always good, but certain months offer better fishing than others. For me, November is always a special month. The near shore kingfish bite is normally in full swing with lots of schoolie sized kings and big smoker kings to be had with some big Spanish mackerel and even bonita mixed in for an added bonus. This year’s bite will be interesting, as we are not quite sure what effects the red tide will have on them or our bait population. We are hoping and staying positive, as we should be clear of the effects by now. As for methods, both slow trolling and anchoring up and chumming can be productive. Fish areas of hard bottom or structure like rock piles, reefs and wrecks that are holding large amounts of bait for best results. If you’re in search of that big smoker sized king in the 30 to 50-pound range, slow trolling live baits like blue runners, cigar minnows, big pilchards or threadfin herring are going to garner best results. Kingfish tournament Pros work for days collecting the right bait to give themselves the best shot at winning. Remember to troll with the tide and current and don’t troll
too fast. I usually am bumping my motors in and out of gear and just keeping my baits moving and lines tight! A loose drag is also a key to success as kingfish strikes are often fast and violent. Letting them run a little with the baits and getting that hook set in their mouths good will up your catch rate considerably. Most of the top kingfish tourney guys fish monofilament line verses braided line because of the stretch you get from the mono and the violent strikes that kingfish often offer. You’ll also need to be fishing wire leaders. I use #6 wire most of the time with pretty good results. If live bait is hard to catch for you trolling, a Clark spoon will work as well. Again, a small piece of wire leader is always recommended. Kingfish are by far one of our coolest fish to catch with their sky rocketing ways, long runs and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. ey everybody, it’s safe to go fishing again! Summer is over and with it’s passing the wet weather, red tide, hurricane threats and anything else that’s been keeping you from getting out to catch that once in a lifetime fish have passed with it. Fishing here has never been better! We never experienced the first breath of red tide here. Snook, tarpon, redfish, trout, flounder, sharks, bluefish, mackerel and more have been terrorizing the baitfish and they are still hungry! They’re eating just about anything thrown their way, whether it’s live bait, artificials or even frozen baits. Anglers from up and down the coast have been fishing up here since August and have been reporting that they’ve never caught so many fish in their lives. Once fish move into a new area, they’re not likely to leave for anything except mass bait migrations to somewhere else. Offshore fishing for grouper, snapper, mackerel, amberjack, kingfish and cobia is amazing right now--with anglers reporting

S
oon, the first cold front will hit our area and the water temps will drop to the magical 74-degree mark. As November approaches, so does the west coast flounder run. These odd flat fish with both eyes on top is one of the best eating fish in our waters. One of the best things about them is that they are predictable and easy to target. That doesn’t mean they are easy to catch! Inshore flounder will move into any sandy bottom area surrounded by grass or structure. Shallow pot holes on grass flats, the edges of channels, or sandy areas around oyster beds will all hold fish. Flounder will attack lures and live bait as it runs across their area. The trick is to slow down the presentation as flounder are ambush predator’s that lay in wait for food to swim by.
When you feel the thump, give a slight pause before setting the hook. Flounder tend to grab a bait or lure and will hold it in their teeth lined mouth before swallowing the offering. That’s the part that makes them tricky to catch. When you feel the thump, lower the rod tip and then strike. They should be hooked up. If you miss, slightly move the bait or lure and the flounder might attack again. They are ferocious predators. Best baits are live shrimp, mud minnows (aka killifish), or whitebait. Lures such as soft plastics on a 1/6 to1/4-ounce jighead, or suspended lures like a Mirror-Lure, work great. A trout sized set up works fine for these fish. A 7-foot 6-inch fast-action rod with a 2500 to 3000 class reel loaded with 10-pound braid is all you need. 15 to 20-pound fluorocarbon leader is perfect. If fishing live bait, 1/0 to 3/0 hooks matched to bait size will work best. Circle hooks work well, because the fish will hook themselves if they pull on the bait. A big flounder can feel like a snag--a snag that wants to swim away with your bait! They will grab the bait or lure and try to bury back into the sand. Flounder will stack up in rocky off shore bottom in 20 to 40 feet. Some really nice
sized fish can be caught. If you run into the bigger flounder, bump your tackle up to 12 to 17-pound spinning gear. Live or dead shrimp on a jighead or knocker rig will always produce. A bonus of hog snapper is also a possibility. The flounder bite will remain hot until the water really cools down around mid-tolate December. If you find one flounder, keep fishing the area. These guys like to school up. Multiple fish can come from the same spot. They are best eaten fresh, so never keep more than what you will need for a few dinners. TAMPA’S BEST KEPT SECRET BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE
A
s a young boy growing up in Seminole Heights, Tampa, I would spend countless hours fishing or snatch hooking mullet in the Hillsborough River. I would ride my bicycle after supper to the bridge at Sligh Avenue. There, I would join a couple of others fishing the lights from the bridge. I especially enjoyed watching these guys with long cane poles fishing for and catching snook. They used long, powerful, cane poles, rigged with 36 inches of heavy nylon or Dacron line, and a large lure. They leaned over the bridge railing and with the pole and lure worked a figure 8-pattern in the water, around the pilings. Never a bashful kid and always inquisitive, I asked this tall, lean fellow with a scraggly beard, named Chuck, if he would teach me to fish that way. Hauling a nice fish over the rail he replied, “Sure, do you have a pole?” “No,” I replied, “But I will tomorrow. Can you help me rig it?” “Yea, I’ll help you. It shouldn’t take long to get you set up.” Chuck always seemed to catch more fish, so I figured I might as well learn from the best. Besides, he always kidded me saying, “Boy, you can’t catch anything with that snatch hook.” However, leaving the bridge with four or five mullet each night I soon made him a believer. The following day after school, I went across the street to my neighbor Mr. Davis. A unique man who loved fishing. A retired carpenter, Mr. Davis made his own cane poles from bamboo growing in his yard. Handing me just what I needed, he yelled as I left, “Save some for me.” Later, when dad came home from work, he gave me some heavy Dacron
line and an old extra-large Dalton Silver Flash lure. Unable to wait, I headed to the bridge early. Chuck was there and surprised I’d rounded up such a first class cane pole. Together we rigged my outfit and tied on the lure dad had given me. He told me to hang over the rail and work the lure like him. It took some practice and after watching Chuck, I finally got the hang of it. It didn’t take long before I realized why he often sat down, leaned against the concrete, and smoked a cigarette. This leaning over the rail kills your back. Sitting together one night around 9 pm I asked Chuck, “What do they call this kind of fishing.” He looked over saying, “Snook,” with a smile. I countered, “No, you know what I mean”. Then smiling again, he said “I know kid, we call it swishing.” The name seemed to fit perfectly, because that is what you did--swish a lure back and forth. Soon, we’re back at it and catching fish, laughing together and having fun night fishing for Snook. Regardless of the name, it was and probably still is an effective way to catch snook at night. “Swishing--a simple technique requiring inexpensive tackle, some back muscles and a willingness to try something different. O
ver the years of chartering, I have seen a lot of interesting things, met a lot of great people, heard a lot of wonderful stories and have been asked millions of questions. Here are a few of the most important things not to say to the captain on the way out: “Hey, how’s the outboards been working for ya?”, “Looks like the seas are calm out today” or “It looks like it’s not going to rain”. I always tell people “Let’s wait till we get back to the dock and talk about that”. As we all know, if it can...it will! Now that we are past hurricane Michael, here on the Nature Coast the fishing should really turn on. The storm should move in some much-needed cooler waters which bring in the grouper, kingfish, cobia, mackerel and other species ready to eat. This time of year, I get excited about the gag grouper. With cooler water, thousands of stone crab traps are being set out and the grouper will move in to shallower water. Now is the time to check your near shore rock piles. I like to start by chumming up the spot before tossing out a bait. Use live baits like pinfish, pigfish or threadfins. Or, try fresh cut baits or frozen bait like threadfin or mackerel. Use fairly strong gear. I like to use 50 to 60-pound line, as light a weight as you can to keep the bait on the bottom and a 7/0 circle hook. Be patient, and you will be

rewarded. If you’re off shore bottom fishing, put out a freeline with a live bait for kingfish or cobia. These line screamers will be in those same areas. Inshore, the redfish and trout bite should also turn on strong with the cooler water. This is the time of year for those that like to throw artificial baits. With jigs, crankbaits and topwater, you should have no problem enticing a bite. This is also the time of year to be thankful. I am thankful for my family, my friends, and blessed to be able to chase fish with the new friends I meet on every charter. Even when things seem bad, stop and think about how many things you should be thankful for. Have a great Thanksgivings all you fishheads. FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO
W
e are in “Prime Time” for spec fishing now all the way through April. Our water levels remain high, creating the perfect fresh water environments here in Polk County. Come on over. You’ll be glad you did! Our anglers report good size and limits on spec fishing, whether fishing from piers or from boats. The recommended bait for attracting those specs this time of year is still live minnows. As our weather gets cooler and water temperatures drop, it’s a good time to switch baits to jigs or spoons. Some of our recent reports are stating 11 to 12-inch specs being brought in mixed with a fair amount of shell crackers. Our best reporting lakes at this time are lakes Haines and Rochelle in the North Chain. Lake Ariana in Auburndale is also reporting favorable spec fishing from the piers at night. Moving into November, we should see more optimum conditions for specs showing up in the South Chain. Year after year, with the cooler temperatures and higher water levels, Central Florida offers some of the very best fishing in Florida. A good place to start would be in the South Winter Haven Chain at lakes Howard, Shipp, or Cannon. All offer boat launch or pier fishing, so you don’t have to have a boat to enjoy a good day of fishing. Our current reports on bass fishing coming in from both the North and South Chains continue to be excellent. There are many smaller lakes in those areas that are also good producers and worth exploring. Bass are beginning to stage this time of year. To attract those bass, our anglers are
currently recommending top water frogs. A recommended stick bait, Bass Assassin XX Fat Job (6 ½”) in assorted colors, also appears to be working well. The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments has now ended. In the enclosed photo, the (8 lb 1 oz) beauty proudly displayed by Big Bass/1st Place Winner, Jeremy Scarborough, was landed while fishing a recent tournament on Lake Shipp in the South Winterhaven Chain. Our seasons usually run from April 1st through October 31st. Weekly registration is $30.00 per boat (1 or 2 man) and the tournaments run from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM each Thursday. Prizes are awarded for BIG BASS and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place categories. The location each week is not revealed until Thursday mornings and is announced in “The Ledger” and on our Facebook page. elcome back yak fans. For those who served and are serving--my thanks, a nations thanks and happy Veterans Day. This month the fishing report, a forecast and a story. But first, a prayer for all who just came through last month’s storms. To my Tampa Bay readers, once you’re north of the Pasco line, you can keep your fish--it’s all just fine. Ok, so I’m not a poet. First, the story on a recent trip. I was working an outgoing tide, but was only about an hour or so from the high which meant I had a lot of water. I pulled into a small bay--and by small, I mean about the size of a large living room. This is a bay where I have caught many nice reds, snook and black drum. The bay is fed by three small creeks--and when I say small, these are hardly wider than my kayak. You have to push through the grass and the rocks--we’re talking tight! I set up on the northwest side to cast and pull the lure with the outgoing tide. The first cast was with, of course, my trusty Zara Spook. This monster fish of at least 30 inches plus starts following. Three times he missed the lure and I’m running out of room when the fourth time he nailed it. Game on! About this time that little voice went off in my head. “You remember telling yourself to retie that leader that was a little too long and was catching on the front eye of the rod? You realize that weakens the knot and it’s been like four trips--you are so screwed” it said. I’m telling the little voice to shut up. I’m busy! As the fish headed for the grass, I turn it the first time, but not the second and bink the line broke at the knot. Don’t you hate it when that little voice is right? I paddled over the area with the hope it got hung up or had thrown the lure, but he headed back into the marsh. I’m glad fish can’t laugh! After
a vain search, I left that little bay and worked my way North for about three hours. By this time, it was getting toward the low tide and I’m fishing an outside bay, about a half a mile from where my lure got taken. I got set up facing to the Northwest and saw something big roll out in front of me, and then I saw something white close to where the fish rolled. I’m thinking maybe a diamondback terrapin, but the color was wrong. So, I started paddling and, lo and behold, there was my lure. How in the heck it made it with 2-plus-feet of leader and treble hooks through all that grass and rocks, I’ll never know. And, if I had been there three minutes later, it would’ve been gone. I will never know if the fish I saw roll finally got it loose or was sent to attract my eyes in that direction and I guess I never will. So, tying the lure back on--at the proper length this time--and telling that little voice to go suck eggs, I smiled and paddled on back into the inside to finish the days fishing. Okay, on to fishing and the forecast. The Fall’s cooler water is bringing in the sheepshead and black drum. The trout are finally moving back into the flats, which is great news. I was wondering if I was ever going to see a trout again. Having hooked into more than 20-plus reds on each of my last two outings, I would have to say that the red bite is phenomenal. I’ve seen black drum tailing and sheepshead cutting through the grass with their backs up out of the water. I love this time year. So, blow the dust off your boats and make sure your leaders are not tied too long. Get out there and go fishing. eep jigging or vertical jigging is a fishing method that has been practiced around the world, but is slowly getting acceptance from the saltwater anglers on the east coast. California, Mexico and Cuba have been yoyo jigging for years and have been very productive. The introduction of the Butterfly Jigging system several years ago opened the door for other manufactures producing new versions of jigging products.

Find a location with moderate current and look for rocky areas, wrecks or other structure. A good bottom sounder is important in order to read not only the bottom, but the fish. Position the boat directly over the structure or fish and drop a jig. The weight of the jig is determined by the current and depth of water. I recommend having a good selection of jigs before starting on your jigging trip.
This simple technique allows you to drop the jig to the bottom, always staying in touch. By this I mean you must always feel the jig, as this will help in hook setting and also keeping the jig from twisting around your leader or line. There are several methods of deep jigging. One is positioning the boat directly over the fish or drifting over the bottom across the rocks or wreck. Always drift parallel to the rocks or wreck. Once the fish are located, it’s time to decide which lures will work best--metal jigs or soft plastic bait. Please note that your lure should be heavy enough to touch bottom at all times. When you drift beyond the ledge, rocks or wreck area, crank up and start another up current drift. Drop down to the bottom, crank one turn on the reel and start the drift again. Once a fish is hooked, drop a marker over the side. This will give you a reference point for your next drift or to do a stationary drop. When drifting for your best position in the boat, a good point to remember is that when the wind is in your face, you are in the right place. Anchoring is another choice if there is a strong current or strong wind. Position the boat over the structure and start jigging, allowing the jig to hit bottom every time.

Technique Red Snapper Red snapper jigging is slightly different in that you are fishing mid-water fish rather than on the bottom. A good bottom machine will mark red snapper as an inverted chevron. Drop the jig and follow it down on your bottom machine until it reaches the area where the
snapper are showing up and start your jigging at that point. It’s a trial and error for the novice, but with a little hard work you can manage the technique. Tackle With metal jigs in fast currents or deep water, I prefer conventional reels with a fast retrieve mediumaction rod with 40 to 50-pound test braided line and a 36-inch 60-pound test clear mono leader. I find that a good grade of clear monofilament line works well and has a thinner diameter than fluorocarbon. In shallow waters of 20 to 60 feet, I prefer soft baits on spinning tackle. I use a medium-action rod spooled with 30-pound test braided line and a 36-inch fluorocarbon leader of 40-pound test. A tight drag is recommended since you are fishing over structure. These fish will head for the nearest hole or structure when they strike. Under normal conditions I would use a conventional reel for grouper fishing, but I find spinning tackle to be less straining and easier to maintain the proper motion for longer periods of time. FLATS TO NEARSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. GARY BURCH

ovember’s temperatures will be up and down all month. It’s very typical for this time of year to have these kinds of conditions. Cold fronts will come through and cool things down and the sun comes out and warms it back up. The key is to fish the warm-up when fish are more active. There are plenty of warm days and some great fishing in the Clearwater and Dunedin areas this month. Redfish, 20-plus-inch trout,
mackerel, some flounder and a few pompano are just a few of what’s on tap for November. Lots of other species like kingfish, ladyfish and small sharks make a showing as well. As long as the weather says relatively stable for the entire month, look for a steady bite throughout the bays and flats. Start your search for big gator trout along the numerous grass flats of St. Joseph Sound. The fish will be laying in about 3 to 4-feet of water--mostly around grass and sand-type bottoms. The fish will move around from day-to-day and so should you. Use white bait if you can find it, other wise use live shrimp. There are lots of artificials that catch big trout as well. One such jig I used last year to catch several gator trout over 24 inches was the “Mr. Twister” in root beer color. Redfish will be found on many of the flats of both Clearwater and Dunedin Bays. These fish may be found one day and not the next. When you find some fish, use a
stealth approach, because the less commotion you make the better chance these fish will hang around longer. White bait, cut bait, shrimp and Gulp artificials all work well when targeting redfish. Use the high tide to do your searching up in the shallow waters and along the mangroves. Set up on the outside of the passes, weather permitting, and start chumming. It won’t be long until the mackerel show up. These speedy fish add lots of drag screaming action to any fishing trip. I use a long shank 1/0 hook catching mackerel and have fewer cut offs than using a regular 1/0 hook. Try it--it’s lots of fun. Now, if a strong cold front hits the area and drops the water temps 10 to 15 degrees, the fish will disappear for a few days. But, give it a day or two and our great Florida sunshine will warm it back up and bring out the fish again. Hope for a nice cool down during November--we all like

nshore fishing in the Clearwater and Dunedin areas can be the most exciting and relaxing fishing experience you’ll ever have. ST. PETE REPORT FALL TARPON

uring Fall months, targeting tarpon can sometimes be very challenging. During the majority of the Summer, you can find tarpon just about anywhere in the bay--passes, beaches, mangrove estuaries and grass flats. As the water temperature drops, resident juvenile tarpon make their way toward the rivers, creeks, and canals in search of warmer water havens for their winter stay. When fishing rivers, you want to fish areas that have decent tidal flow and a significant change in depth (for example, a point or bend in a river that drops off close to the mangroves or shoreline). Tarpon instinctively take advantage of trenches, drop-offs and potholes in high current areas of rivers, because they can ambush bait easily and stay warm. Many of the residential canals located on the Pinellas side of the bay are sure to hold juvenile tarpon. Fishing docks and seawalls can be very productive day or night. When fishing docks at night, you want to take advantage of lights as many baitfish are attracted to them. Scaled sardines, and live shrimp are your best bet for bait this time of year. You can find live shrimp at just about any bait and tackle store in the area. Some bait shops sell scaled sardines, but most of the time you have to use a cast net to catch them. I recommend catching enough to use for bait, as well as, a few extra to throw as chum. You will be able to find these baitfish at the channel markers and shallowto-deep transition areas nearest boat channels. I use a 10-foot Humpback cast net to gather my bait. I can usually catch enough bait for a trip in one or two casts due to the ease of opening in the net design. If these baits don’t work, I
recommend using cut threadfin herring, or scaled sardines. When tarpon become lethargic from the cooler water temperatures, cut bait on the bottom makes for a more tempting and easier meal. I present my baits with a 2/0 hook free-lined on 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader. The addition of a few split shot weights may be necessary when fishing areas with current. When it comes to tarpon lures, top water plugs are hard to beat. During the summer or winter months, top water lures produce lots of fish. Working a plug on top of the water and watching a juvenile tarpon explode on it is probably one of the most exciting sites that you can experience in Tampa Bay—second only to tarpon fishing during the big migration in May. My favorite top water lure is the Livingston Lures Pro Sizzle in bone/silver color. This lure is always on my boat. It is safe to say that many anglers develop their own techniques for catching juvenile tarpon during the different seasons. Getting out on the water and casting a line is the one tried and true way to do this. Tarpon are some of the most sought after inshore sportfish and, many times, the most challenging to catch. Tampa Bay is home to some of Florida’s greatest tarpon fishing year-round. Feel free to use information from this article and tips from bay area bait stores and other anglers. t’s every angler’s favorite time of the year! The water temps will begin to cool off and the fish will be super aggressive--eating anything in sight. Lucky for us, red tide didn’t make it up into our Pasco waters, so our fishery was safe. But remember, we do have closure on the harvest of
redfish and snook until next year or possibly longer, due to how other areas were affected this year. This is the time of year when you can start to work on the artificial side of things. With the tides becoming lower along with lower water temps, fish will become more active and curious about your bait. First thing in the morning, I like trying out smaller topwater baits such as a Top Pup or a smaller Skitter Walk lure. At higher tides, work your bait close to the mangrove line at a faster pace to lure the fish out for an attack. During lower tides, you’ll look for the mullet schools on the flats. Present the bait and use a slower
retrieval. You should find quality reds with the gator trout moving through those schools. Another one of my favorite low tide baits for big trout and redfish is a bait called “The Slick”. It’s a weedless soft plastic that is super deadly this time of year. Work it slow with gentle twitches, and you should have no problem hooking up with a quality fish Snook are back in their fall homes. Use a bigger artificial for snook and find the outgoing tides ripping around corners, spillways, and creeks. They are waiting for the finger mullet and other small baits to flush out. So, get something good sized and work it with the

GLAMPING TO PRIMITIVE CAMPING BY: MISTY WELLS

all is finally here, and temperatures are finally cooling off in the Sunshine State. It’s time to get out that camping gear and sleep under the stars. November is one of the best months to go camping in Florida. Temperatures are down and the bugs have somewhat started to disappear. There are so many parks, islands, camp grounds and off-the-beaten-path places to pitch a tent, it’s hard to decide where to go first. Depending on the level of camping you want to do, there are places for primitive to glamping all over the state. Let’s start with one of my favorites, glamping, that means glamorous camping. No, I did not make it up, it really does exist. My favorite place to glamp is the Westgate River Ranch located in Central Florida, about two hours east of Tampa, Florida. Picture a scene from “Out of Africa--white tents laden with real furniture, a comfy mattress and a real air conditioner. Did I mention a camping butler brings you coffee and fresh cinnamon rolls in the morning? There is plenty to keep you busy at the Westgate River Ranch, from cruising the waterways on an airboat, riding the ranch on horseback and skeet shooting to getting down and dirty in the swamp buggy. On Saturday night, they feature a Ranch Rodeo complete with bull riding, barrel racing and the always entertaining calf roundup for the kids. Don’t forget the marshmallows and hot dogs. Each night your camp concierge comes to light your campfire to keep the camping party going.
Now if that is not exactly what you are looking for, I suggest trying out Ft. Desoto Park for some of the best camping in Florida. Ft. Desoto is located on the West Coast of Florida in St. Pete. It is a 1136-acre park rich in history and no shortage of waterfront campsites. You need to be sure to visit the historic forts that date back to the early 1800’s. Ft. Desoto was a perfect location for defending the West Coast of Florida. Ft. Desoto park offers pier fishing, great kayaking along the shores and island to island and miles of amazing bike trails. One thing I should warn you about are the racoons. They can get pretty friendly when there is food in the campsite. Be sure to lock up what you don’t want carried off. Looking to get more primitive and move closer to nature? I suggest checking out Anclote Key Preserve State Park located offshore of Tarpon Springs. Travel back in time, unplug and feel like you are ship wrecked on a deserted Island. If you don’t have a boat, you can always take the ferry. You need to bring everything that you
need--tent, water and food. The Island will provide plenty of adventure. Although most of these places are quite different, the one thing they have in common is that you may need to confirm a reservation beforehand. TARPON RESCUE BY: GIAN DIBELLA
A
fter receiving word from local business owner and avid conservationist, Jeff Harrell of Bar Fly (Safety Harbor) about a local honey hole in distress, several local fishermen jumped in to help. The problem at hand was the devastation about to fall upon a local estuary in Tarpon Springs where we all have enjoyed catching juvenile tarpon and snook for decades. A local builder had obtained permits to backfill a natural spring and build a housing development directly on top of it. The mission at hand was to coordinate an effort and rescue as many of these fish to be relocated locally into a nearby canal system. We all watch the news and read stories of environmental destruction, but how often do we see it happen in our own back yard? Recent developments surrounding aquatic habitat loss have peaked our interest as anglers. The negative impact has made us more aware of our own ability to preserve and maintain our local estuaries. I had the privilege to assist in this local effort and learned a valuable lesson. Personal involvement and a little elbow grease can go further than social media banter. Through the work of what can only be described as magic, Jeff was able to round up the support of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT), FWC, and most importantly a supportive and eager community of anglers and business owners. What started as a knee-jerk reaction blossomed into one of the most impressive shows of hard work and dedication I have
ever witnessed. BTT was able to secure insurance and permits that allowed the crew to carry out the plan and ensure success by any means necessary. Within hours of setting things into motion, folks began to arrive to watch and support what was taking place. Armed with kayaks, seine nets, and an appetite to succeed, these folks plunged headfirst in the muddy remains of what once was an estuary. Through hard work and an all-in mentality, they started carefully pulling one tarpon after another, placing them in holding tanks where they were immediately transported to a nearby canal system. Neck deep in mud, risking infection, swimming in piles of dead tilapia and trash, these brave folks risked it all to lend a hand in saving the next generation of the precious game fish we all hold so dear. It was truly a sight to behold and a true pride to assist. All in all, over 60 tarpon were successfully transferred and released healthy. There is a lesson in this for all of us who consider ourselves responsible anglers. Pay attention to what’s happening in your communities, stay involved in the preservation of your local habitats, and teach your kids how to respect and enjoy the environment which surrounds us. I
t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow
water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. hen Bob Sundstrom, of Odin Lure Company, created his Oozzie Jig in 2011, he knew right away it was something special. It worked wonders on the New Hampshire coast for cod, haddock and stripers, and he patented his new technology that allows hard baits to disperse a steady stream of fish-attracting scent. A
laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-
t a r p on t o grow up to 40 pounds. Anglers make casts to large schools of rolling tarpon over shallow eel grass flats early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders
