MAKING CO-OP ADVERTISING WORK FOR YOUR CUSTOMER

any manufacturers offer advertising co-op for their dealers. Normally the amount of co-op advertising that the dealer has access to is based on a percentage of their annual purchase with the manufacturer. I recently watched a marine repair and engine repair store get a full page ad for 12 months for free! That’s right! $8,000 worth of 2022 advertising for free.

Here’s how they did it.

Suzuki gives the dealers $250 of co-op for each engine they purchase. Normally they cover up to 50% of the price of the ad up to the amount of co-op credit funds available to the dealer. Suzuki just raised this percentage to 75% for their dealers who advertise in Coastal Angler Magazine. Why? Because they love us, they know we send them business, and they want to encourage their dealers to tie local advertising into their national advertising program with us. Obviously we’re the only publication that has local and national ads in the same magazine. But this particular Brevard Suzuki dealer didn’t stop at 75% co-op. He said, “Put this Furuno logo in the ad, too. Suzuki and Furuno go together like peanut butter and jelly. Suzuki will not mind, and neither will Furuno.”

Simple! Brilliant! Free full page ad.

If you haven’t approached your local Suzuki dealer for advertising, you’re leaving money on the table. Also, keep in mind coop advertising contributions are available from an array of manufacturers in the marine and related industries.

MONETIZING EDITORIAL An Interview with Joe Woody, Co-Publisher Great Smoky Mountains The Angler Magazine

W

ith rising printing and shipping costs, ensuring revenue on each page of our magazines has never been more important.

In an interview with the Great Smoky Mountains franchise owner, Joe Woody, we discovered a previously untapped resource for economically increasing page counts and deepening our partnerships with our writers.

CAM Staff: Joe I’ve noticed you are publishing 24 pages in your local edition, and it seems like you have quite a few guides running ads with you. How have you done it?

Joe Woody: As I’ve reached out to potential new contributors, I give them a choice on how we structure their monthly fishing report.

Option 1—Send me your 250-word forecast for your area each month and as I have space, I will publish it. No charge.

Option 2—Send me your 250-word article, and I’ll place an 1/8th page ad under it for $75 a month.

Option 3—Run a 1/2 page ad for your guide service for only $250 per month and then submit a monthly report of 400 words and a photo. That’s equivalent to a full page in the magazine each month for only $250, because that 400-word article takes up a 1/2 page of space. I also let them know as business owner to business owner that because we’re a free magazine that I need to have revenue on

Cherokee Lake

C

herokee Lake in East Tennessee is a jewel that is very accessible from the surrounding states of North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky.

There are a lot of amenities on Cherokee Lake to include many campgrounds, marinas and a few restaurants. But most important is the fishing!

Cherokee Lake is home to many species of freshwater fish, some of which are very popular and some that are little known. Most people thing of “Cherokee” as being a striper fishing lake, and there is some truth to that. The striper population is very strong, thanks to the stocking efforts of the TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency). Striper can be found throughout the year, from the John Sevier Steam Plant dam at the north end of the lake in Rogersville, all the way to the southern tip of the lake near Jefferson City. trolling live and artificial baits, and fishing “down lines” with live biat.

While using these methods, it is not uncommon to catch some decent Hybrid Bass, otherwise known as “Cherokee Bass”, and white bass.

Crappie fishing is phenomenal on Cherokee and slabs can be caught most all year long.

Techniques include long lining, spider rigging, vertical jigging and using live minnows or goldfish. The list of effective artificial baits used is as extensive as that of what is available.

Bass fishing is also very popular on the lake and many tournaments are held throughout the year and include local tournaments as well as regional and nationally recognized tours. Large mouth and smallmouth are equally plentiful on the lake and catching a trophy bass is a common occurrence.

Springtime smallmouth fishing is one of my favorites and can provide non-stop excitement on a good day.

Catfish tournaments are also

common on Cherokee as are sport fishermen seeking a good catfish dinner. Blues, Flatheads and Channel Cats are all plentiful throughout the lake. The techniques vary for each species and I will cover that in a later article.

The population of Walleye, sauger and saugeye are little known to most, but they are large in number and size. Techniques used while fishing for these species are very similar to techniques used in the northern parts of the country such as the Great Lakes. It is not uncommon to catch walleye in the 25 – 30 inch range with the common eater size (15-20 inch) providing impressive numbers.

As you can see, Cherokee Lake affords many opportunities for the fishing novice, to the seasoned tournament veteran. I haven’t

mentioned every species that is living in the lake, such as paddle fish, blue gill and the popular gar for the bowfishers. That said, Lake Cherokee is truly a jewel located in the District IV region of East Tennessee. There are numerous resources available to help in learning the lake, most of which are available at local marinas and by visiting the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency online. So stay safe out there and remember, “You Cant Catch Them On The Couch”.

CAM Staff: Joe, would you mind sharing with the rest of our franchise owners how many of those monetized editorial deals you have?

Joe Woody: I currently have five of the 1/2 page deals at $250 per month and two deals for full page ads with an adjacent 1/2 page of editorial for $400 each.

Those are both guides who also own shops, or shops that have required one of the staff to produce the editorial each month.

CAM Staff: Joe, if my math is correct that’s an additional $2,050 that you’re generating each month from editorial, correct?

Joe Woody: Yes, that’s correct, but one thing to keep in mind is that I have not so far been able to convert my original forecast writers to the paid program. I still have several that get their forecasts for free, but the pay-to-play program has worked with almost all of the new writers that I’ve reached out to. I’m pretty certain that over time I will have all my contributors helping to shoulder the cost of my forecast pages.

The truth is, our writers get quite a lot of business from their monthly fishing forecasts, and when a new writer sees what our media kit cost for a full or half page ad is, they know that they are getting an exceptional deal, and it seems to me that they don’t mind doing a little work to get that deal.

Scott and Kyra Goodman are the new franchise owners of the Miami edition. They have been together for 15 years and have a 16-month-old son, Aston.

Scott has a background in media, PR and marketing consulting that spans over 20 years. He has been self employed for 15 years as the owner and partner of various advertising and PR agencies. He was also the marketing manager for Fox Sports FL and Fox Sports Sun, where he designed campaigns to advertise and monetize outdoor products including 17 fishing shows.

Kyra is a full-time Advanced Registered Nurse Practioner in Miami, and she will be assisting Scott with operations.

Scott says he “likes the idea that if I work harder I can directly impact my own success, and I also like the idea of being part of a larger brand, building brand equity, and the opportunity to meet and work with people with like interests and values.”
