Mississippi/Gulf Coast FISHING FORECAST -
December- Captain Sonny Schindler Shore Thing Fishing Charters Bay St Louis, MS 228-342-2295 www.shorethingcharters.com
Its looking like we may have to put on some extra layers of clothes this winter. Assuming that December is going to get chilly, please don’t let that stop you from fishing this month. As long as it is not raining, there is usually something good to get into, all month long. On the good weather days, most of our crews will be down south in the LA Marsh. We usually start in the 9-Mile are and work our way either South or West. You really need to watch your tides, and make sure you can get out of where you are fishing. Sure, we will check the usual deep drains, for speckled trout. Most of the fun we will be having, is sight casting to red fish back in the duck ponds. The best conditions would have to be a blue bird sky, with a rising tide, with little to no wind. Just put the sun at your back, the wind in your face, and keep your eyes peeled for tails, wakes and big packs of feeding reds. On the calm clear water days, we will usually just throw a tight lined minnow on a jig head in front of the cruising reds. On the days with high or dirty water, we normally throw live or dead shrimp under the Boat Monkey popping corks. I have been a big fan of the new Okuma Helios 30 spinning reels. I spool mine with 20lb braided line on a medium heavy , they cast a country mile, and are tough enough to handle any size red in the marsh. On the rougher/windier days, most of fishing we do, will be in close on the near shore reefs. The colder it gets, the better the sheepshead fishing gets. Usually live or dead shrimp is our go to bait for those tasty sheepshead. You can use the corks, fished close against the structure, or either a dropper loop or Carolina rig. Just pay very close attention to your weather and tides. If the weather is really bad, STAY HOME. Tell someone where you are gonna be fishing, and what time you expect to be back. There is plenty of good fishing to be had all month long, just have fun and be safe. Thanks

HUNTING Give Back To Your Roots By Dustin Nelson
The opening weekend of the 2017-2018 waterfowl season is less than a week away here in South Mississippi. Our youth water fowlers are chomping at the bit to rattle off their smoke poles. I’m not sure about everyone else’s youngsters but mine seems to empty his gun every chance he gets. Hit or miss, that smile he has after the chaos is over is worth it for me. Even if u don’t have kids I encourage you to take someone else’s. There’s something about a contagious smile of a young hunter that reels even the savviest of the older generation back to way back when. They seem to appreciate what’s around them without worrying about who’s shooting what gun or how much the next guy just dropped on his new toys. It’s a breath of fresh air seeing a couple old hundred-dollar single barrel 20 gauges laid up in the blind and watching the kids laugh
4 MISS_GULF DECEMBER 2017
dec_GULF_2017.indd 4
after it kicks the crap outta’ them. If you don’t have kids my bets are you know someone who’s does. I encourage you all to look around you and spread your passion for the outdoors with the youth in your community. There’s a lot of kids that would love to go but
mom and dad may be working every day at the yard, or refinery trying to m a k e s ends meet. We need to step up as outdoorsman and go out of our way to be sure these kids aren’t over looked. After all they are the future of the sport that we love and cherish. They need to be taught as you and I were to conserve wetlands and preserve habitat for generations to come. I pray that when I’m old I’m not forgotten. That my son and maybe even
a kid I took as youth will let me tag along every now and again. I’d prolly be ok if they just came over and shared a cup of coffee with me. They could tell me some good hunting stories. Perhaps even stick around long to listen to some of mine.

HUNTING Did You Know That Big Monster Buck Has A Cell Phone And Receives Messages?
Talk to any experienced hunter and ask how many deer he has killed hunting scrapes. I have asked this question many times and have never gotten an answer above a quantity of two. Hunting scrapes all their lives and only two kills. The reason is until now we didn’t understand how scrapes work. The scrape is a buck’s cell phone. This is where he gets his messages. The way messages are left is not in the dirt but on the bottom of the overhanging limb. We believe the PH of the soil kills the pheromones in the urine, preventing deer from getting information. In other words, they can’t tell my urine from a deer’s urine. The overhanging limb is dead center of the scrape for a reason. A deer’s normal body temperature is 104 F. The reason for this is so they can stand the cold climate of the north. Because of the doe’s high body temperature, when she comes in heat she is 112 F. This makes for a large amount of steam rising and floating in the wind, sticking to every bush it comes to. This is nature’s way of making sure the buck can find her when she is in her 72 hour breeding period. The buck does everything in his power to make sure the overhanging limb is dead center of the scrape. The doe comes in, gets in the center of the cleaned out area and urinates and the steam rises straight up to the bottom of the overhanging limb leaving a message for the buck to smell and taste. He will know exactly where she is in her cycle. So if we make scrapes and spray Doe-In-Heat on the bottom of the limb we can start the rut anytime we want. If you find scrapes you can spray and tell the buck it is on. This works best if the outside temperature is 40 or lower. One thing we don’t want to do is spray scrapes in the dark. We want the buck to think the doe is in there in the daylight. The same if you are spraying Dominant Buck. Also, if you spray a scrape, never leave until at least an hour has passed. The reason is if a buck comes in and smells a fresh doe and she is not there it will throw a flag up and he will leave and never come back. A doe feeds at about 2 miles an hour so if you wait an hour to leave he will think she just meandered off. Remember, you must be using a scent eliminator that works. The deer will always come in from downwind. Good hunting.

The Shaking motion and rattling sounds of these lures will have the wahoo racing behind to make an attack. Winter time fishing in south Mississippi can prove to be extremely difficult. For one thing, we really don’t know when winter is here. Our December weather is not easy to track. Within one week's time we have days with temperatures in the high sixties and seventies and water temperatures as high as fifty to sixty degrees. A few days later, temps drops to the low thirties with water temps well below fifty degrees. Finding fish in unpredictable weather can really keep a lot of anglers off the water during the
cold months. But if you do find yourself able to make it out on the water, try to remember these few tips. If the water temps are above fifty degrees, stay shallow. If you have some days in the thirties, that’s when you want to go deep to offshore structure. When fishing shallow, target areas on the lake that offers shade- docks, bridges, piers- some kind of cover that provides shade when the sun is high or that offers deep contour changes on your maps when those temperatures drop. When the bass need to regulate their bodies
temperature, they don’t have to travel too far away from their ambush points to get to the warmer water. They can run to deeper water if it gets too cold for them or they can get their heat directly from the sun by staying near those covered areas. Remember that bass will hold positions and that they are opportunistic feeding fish during the winter months, so fish each pylon thoroughly and quietly. I have my main three baits ready to go when I am targeting winter bass. A swim jig with a craw pattern trailer or a paddle tail trailer. Depending on what the bass are feeding on, I will have a swim pattern bait, flipping jig, and a square bill. Start out by flipping a jig to each pylon and remember to base your jig color and trailer on that lakes forage, matching the hatch. Same principle with swim baits. I always change from power fishing to finesse fishing because the bass can easily spook during this time of year. l their core temperatures are already low, so they are not as aggressive as they normally are. Start out slow. If flipping a jig or swimming a swim bait does not
produce a finesse strike, then I will make long cast parallel to the area that I am targeting with a square bill. If finessing them with a slower and quieter presentation doesn’t get their attention, then the erratic swimming action of a square bill banging into structure will get you a reaction strike and stir the other bass in that area. These tips have worked for me when trying to figure bass out in cooler, unpredictable weather. Safety tip: Even though it is cooler outside and you may not think you need to drink water, dehydration will still occur. So please, bring plenty to drink, let someone know your float plan, wear your PFD. I will see you out on the water.
FRESH EATS REVIEW If you are In Pascagoula and you’re looking for a place to have lunch that’s quick and easy without compromising on taste and service Paradise Deli and Grill is your place. Located at the corner of Delmas Avenue and Magnolia Street, the downtown restaurant offers seating both inside and outside on the patio. Inside, the high wood planked ceilings and lightly colored walls coupled with friendly service and music create a great atmosphere to get away for lunch. sandwiches are also available as wraps at no extra charge. The Paradise Burger is a great place to get started if it’s your first time in. The taste of the charbroiled ground beef patty and the jalapeno bun are the first things to stand out about this burger. It’s dressed with bacon, pepper jack cheese, fried onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and Paradise’s signature sunset sauce. The size of the burger is more than enough to satisfy and is affordably priced at only $8.95. Paradise is also home to what I consider to be the best chicken sandwiches around. The fresh charbroiled chicken breast is always juicy and marinated to perfection. The Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich is chicken marinated in teriyaki sauce and topped with lettuce and pineapple. Served on a sour dough bun and priced at $7.75 the Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich makes a great choice for
a filling lunch with a lighter feel. If you are filling a bit more adventurous go for the Caribbean Jerk Chicken or Shrimp sandwiches. Marinated and seasoned with Caribbean jerk spices, both items are the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. The chicken sandwich is dressed with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, pickles, Paradise’s signature sunset sauce and served on a cheese jalapeno bun. The Shrimp sandwich is sunset sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes on a Po-Boy bun. Paradise Deli and Grill is open Monday thru Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Visit there website at www.paradisedeligrill. com and like them on Facebook to receive the daily specials. Goat Herding ‘

but those teeth are designed for eating barnacles so monofilament is a piece of cake for them to gnaw through. I keep the most realistic crab fly I can find tied to the end. I’ve had pretty good luck with a #2 olive merkin crab with very little flash. The goats can be found in abundance on the inside of the barrier islands or n the marsh near oyster piles and derelict piers. The water is gin clear this time of year which is great because you can spot the fish a mile away, but is bad because they can spot you 2 miles away. Now to the hard part. Stealth is going to be key here. You are only going to get one shot. It is best to keep your backcast low and to a minimum. Cast a few feet away from the fish as it will spook with your typical redfish presentation. When the crab hits the water, many times the fish will hear the fly hit and rush towards it. If not, pick up and reposition. When the fish comes to inspect, slow twitches should keep him interested. You will see the fish tail up on the fly several times, but just keep slow,
PADDLE SPORTS IN PASCAGOULA, MS. By now, you all have probably caught so many redfish that your arms are sore and you are looking for more of a challenge. Well you’re in luck! This month I’m going to give you some tips on how the catch the elusive sheepshead. A.K.A. Cajun Permit because of their frustrating similarity of chasing a fly down only to turn it’s nose up at it and give you the middle fin. I know most of you don’t go out targeting sheepshead, but they are always worth a cast or two. The first step is the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared! I like to always have a rod rigged for sheepshead in the gunnel. And the differences between my redfish set up and sheepshead setup are subtle but necessary. My sheepy rod will have a 10 foot 12 pound leader. Lighter is better,

PADDLE SPORTS Paddling the Ms Barrier Islands By Jimmy Krebs Pascagoula Paradise Paddlers What’s better than spending a beautiful fall afternoon on the water in a kayak or canoe? Having a fish fry on the bayou during the trip! An annual tradition began a few years ago to enjoy a fish fry during our group paddle in Bayou Cumbest, located in East Jackson County. The idea was proposed by the Paradise Paddlers’ speckled trout kayak fishermen who fish the Bayou area. Although they may not share their specific honey holes or lures, they certainly are generous with their haul of specs for whoever shows up for the feast. The group launches from the Point ‘O Pines boat launch, and paddles the several miles down the Bayou to a shell midden on the east bank of the Bayou. There is good, solid, shaded ground with room for a large party. Paddlers are encouraged to bring their favorite dishes or dessert
to share, and a cooling beverage. Other items such as plates, napkins and service ware are provided by folks to share with the group as well. Not only do the kayak fishermen provide the fish, but our speckled trout anglers also do the cooking! The seasoning is just right and the filets come out of the fryer golden and cooked the way you like ‘em! Mmmm, mmmm! I’m slobbering just thinking about it! The location of the fish fry picnic is in an area of an Native American shell midden, and folks may take the short walk east through the brush to the salt flat where the Native Americans temporarily camped on this same ground, trading with others from several villages of various tribes, fishing and collecting oysters. Artifacts are occasionally found of the Native Americans’ presence, but folks are
encouraged to not remove the items they may find. I have seen deer, and sand hill cranes on occasion at the site. Routinely, blue heron, egrets, kingfishers, swallowtail kites, night herons and Osprey are seen. Raccoons regularly walk the banks looking for a meal, digging clams and other shellfish. I have seen dolphins in the small bay where the cookout site is located. Personal items to bring are sunscreen, clothing as the weather requires, a chair, bug spray (the bugs have not been bad in the past, but you never know!), a camera, and your appetite. Be prepared to get your feet wet as landing your

kayak may require some wading since the bank is small. Also shoes should be worn since the bottom is shell covered. The event is like kayak tailgating - informal, sociable, and relaxed. Of course, there maybe some tall tales about fishing, kayaking, or football! The paddle fish fry is tentatively planned for the second weekend in December this year. Exact details will be posted to the Mississippi Kayaking group on Meet-up.com. EXPERT ADVICE
Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
C
hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier. For more information contact David Maney at 888-3409021 or www.FowlersSunglasses.com

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT XTRATUF LEGACY 2.0 Engineered to withstand the world’s toughest conditions, the Legacy 2.0 is a hardcore fishing boot 50 years in the making. The latest addition to XTRATUF’s iconic legacy collection features an advanced new outsole that surpasses the SRC slip resistance rating, a textured heel for easy on/off that won’t get caught in gill nets, and a contoured topline binding so it does not rub harshly against calves. Acid- and chemical-resistant uppers along with shin and bib guards keep fishermen protected while a Polyurethane insole ensures comfort for long days on deck. All boots within the Legacy collection are 100 percent waterproof with unique performance features. Each boot is made with XTRATUF’s signature triple dipping technique, which creates a seamless barrier that is highly resistant to many organic and inorganic acids, chemicals and contaminants. The latex neoprene is ozone resistant and is softer, lighter and far more pliable than ordinary rubber. Cushioned insoles with arch support help fight fatigue and stress on the legs and back. All XTRATUF Legacy boots come with a non-marking, slip-resistant Chevron outsole that provides unparalleled traction on any surface in the most extreme conditions.
