FLY FISHING By Nick Carter

F

ly fishing for bonefish and permit might have originated on the flats of the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, but these islands hardly hold a monopoly on the style of fishing. In the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa, there is an archipelago that claims the highest density of bonefish in the world on one of its outer island groups. The Alphonse Group is three small islets on the southwestern end of the Seychelles, a nation of 115 islands in gorgeous tropical waters northeast of Madagascar. Within the Alphonse Group, Alphonse Atoll and St. Francois Atoll offer more 10,000 acres of hard, white-sand bonefish flats as well as a lagoon with channels, finger flats and coral heads where fly fishers sight fish in clear water to more than 60 species of fish. There are characters familiar to Atlantic flats—bonefish and permit—and there are also species exotic to North American fly rodders, like milkfish, colorful triggerfish and seven species of trevally. Instead of tarpon, the Seychelles offer up the giant trevally, which can weigh in excess of 120 pounds. And with a 10-minute boat ride out of Alphonse Island, anglers can access reef species and big pelagics like sailfish, wahoo, dorado, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna. Either trolling or teasing them up and casting flies to them, these offshore species offer a delightful break from the flats as well as a dinnertime treat on the island. “The Seychelles has become known as the best giant trevally fishery in the world and has become the benchmark for anglers searching for an outstanding saltwater flats fishing experience,” said Keith RoseInnes, managing director of Alphonse Fishing Company. “The sheer numbers and variety of fish species has amazed the fly fishing world, with anglers from across the globe queuing up to sample this ultimate fishing playground.” St. Francois is most well known for its bonefish, with ridiculous

numbers of 4to 6-pound fish and the occasional 8-pounder in the mix. “On falling tides, it is often the case that huge shoals of bonefish can be targeted when leaving the flats in what has been described as a continuous river of bonefish,” said Rose-Innes. “You hunt them on foot and not from a skiff, as the sand flats are hard and white.” It’s also as close to a sure thing as it gets for anglers seeking the Holy Grail of saltwater fly fishing. Good numbers of Indo-Pacific permit populate the flats, and Rose-Innes said his guides have near-perfected the art of catching them. Along with natural environs conducive to awesome fishing, a strong conservation ethic ensures an incredible angling experience. Alphonse Fishing Company tightly controls the amount and type of fishing pressure its waters see, and the fisheries are completely closed a minimum of three months per year. That’s the fishing side of the conservation effort. Alphonse also protects the unique flora and fauna of the islands, which makes for a sensational overall vacation experience, with comfortable lodging among beautiful tropical forests and beaches. Craig Sutton with a Costa Rica yellowfin.

“M

ost people my age buy a house in Costa Rica to retire,” said Craig Sutton, of Nosara Paradise Rentals and FishingNosara. “When I bought my first house in Costa Rica, my life was just starting to get interesting.” Craig first discovered Nosara, Costa Rica on a surfing trip in the late 1990s and immediately fell in love with the people, the culture and the year-round excellent surfing. He purchased a small house near Guiones Beach, bought out his neighbors’ land, and spent the next 15 years building a nature preserve campus of 14 houses plus a pool, common areas and maintenance facilities. One thing was missing from this surfer’s paradise: good fishing. As a native Floridian, Craig’s passion for fishing runs deep. He has been a regular on the kingfish tournament scene for years, with his boat Fishtastic posting top-5 finishes in the several tournaments.

“The problem with fishing in Costa Rica is that fish are so big and so harsh that they will destroy your tackle, plus the costs for fuel is astronomical at $7 a gallon and rising,” said Sutton. “Captains trying to make ends meet would have to choose between new lines, new tackle and a full tank of gas, or putting food on the family table.” After years of struggling to find a captain in Costa Rica who was willing and able to fish aggressively, Sutton realized his only option was to build his own boats and crew them with hand-picked locals. “These guys had the drive and the talent to be great fishermen, they just lacked the tools and the logistical support,” said Sutton. “The team-centered approach allows FishingNosara captains to pursue the fish as aggressively as a professional tournament boat without being distracted by losing lures or running up the gas bill.” FishingNosara launched their first boat, The Wanderer, in 2009 and have added a boat every year since. The results have been astounding. In the 2017 season, the five-boat FishingNosara team ran over 730 trips with over 80 marlin releases and 800 sailfish releases. More importantly, the team inflicted zero billfish fatalities. “Reviving and releasing billfish is a sacred priority to us as conservationists, plus it makes good business sense,” said Sutton. “We have created a market of charter fishermen, which means billfish are worth more money alive and swimming than they are on a scale at the meat market.” As for retirement for Sutton, don’t bet on it anytime soon. Last April he scored a billfish grand slam (blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish) to win the Ship of Fools Billfish Tournament in Costa Rica. Sutton is looking to up-the-ante again in 2018. Back in the States, a new version of the Fishtastic came online this year. It’s an exact copy of the 32’ Eduardono Harvester currently in Nosara, and Sutton is already amped up for a new challenge. “My goal with the new boat is to snag a tournament winning king mackeral in July then go catch marlin in August… seems like a good way to bring two worlds together.”

M

urrells Inlet, S.C. has always been a fishing town. Long before Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand began drawing tourists to experience the beaches, shopping, golf and nightlife that have made it famous, Murrells Inlet was a fishing village. And it’s no wonder. The inlet itself is an inshore angler’s dream. It’s an enclosed system, one of very few inlets on the east coast free from the influence of the Intracoastal Waterway or coastal rivers.

There’s no dirty water flowing in from upstream, and this system of marshes and backwaters is a completely saltwater environment, with no freshwater pumping in to reduce salinity. The result is excellent fishing and exploration of backwater creeks for speckled trout, redfish and the doormat flounder that Murrells Inlet has gained a reputation for. Another thing the area has a well-earned reputation for is huge red drum, which hang out around the jetties to provide anglers with the bulldog runs only a big bull red can provide. It’s some of the best red fishing on the east coast, with fish in the 20- to 40-pound range arriving in numbers in both spring and fall. For those who don’t mind a short boat ride to fill the cooler,

there are numerous nearshore reefs that can be easily accessed with a half-day trip and a run of less than 5 miles. Mackerel, sharks, black sea bass, reds, flounder, bluefish, spadefish and more make for an exciting outing even for the family, and you’ll come back with a cooler full of delicious fish. Out to 15 or 30 miles, there is also excellent trolling for king and Spanish mackerel, cobia and amberjack, as well as bottom fishing for snappers, groupers and sea bass. But those who want to get serious should look into a full-day trip to the Gulf Stream. From 55 to 70 miles offshore, opportunities for tuna, dolphin, wahoo, marlin and sailfish abound. Trolling the Gulf Stream for big-game species off the lower end of the Grand Strand is tough to beat anywhere. So… it’s easy to see why Murrells Inlet has always been a fishing village, and perhaps the best way to experience it is from a base camp at the Inlet Sports Lodge. Located at the heart of Murrells Inlet, the Inlet Sports Lodge is a comfortable and classy boutique hotel that caters to anglers and golfers with the finest amenities in the area. It’s minutes away from three marinas, works closely with the area’s best charter captains and can accommodate boats up to 25 feet. There’s a fish cleaning room for prep, as well as gas and charcoal grills available in the courtyard to cook your catch. Or, for those who’d rather let someone else do the cooking, the COSTA Coastal Kitchen and Bar on-site offers up fine, fresh Italian and seafood fare. There are also several other restaurants nearby that prepare the kind of delicious right-out-of-the-water dishes that have made Murrells Inlet the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina.” And don’t forget the golf. If days on the water paired with days on the links sounds like the perfect way to relax, the Inlet Sports Lodge has you covered. With golf packages booking a wide variety of the Grand Strand’s famous courses, there’s more golf than you can swing a stick at, including two award-winning courses with the same ownership as the Inlet Sports Lodge. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Plantation are two of the finest courses in the area as well as the nation. For more information on fishing, golfing and the Inlet Sports Lodge at Murrells Inlet, S.C., go to www.inletsportslodge.com/ or call 877-585-9360.

Mississippi/Gulf Coast FISHING FORECAST -

November- Captain Sonny Schindler Shore Thing Fishing Charters Bay St Louis, MS 228-342-2295 www.shorethingcharters.com

Hoping for a “November to remember”!!! What’s not to love about November? We get cooler temperatures , much less boats on the water, and usually more predictable fishing. Once the water temps start cooling, the fish begin ganging up back in the Bays and marshes. Most of our efforts will be focused in the 9-mile area, to Lake Borgne in the Louisiana Marsh. The trout will be working on the points and drains off the larger bays. If you can, fish the tides, with a hard falling being our favorite. Live shrimp and or live minnows are great for locating the fish. If the points are full of bait and and diving birds, go straight to the artificial. A good shrimp imitation like the Savage 3-D are lethal. Matrix soft plastics are also deadly. Live bait or plastics, we always fish under the Boat Monkey popping corks. The red fishing in November is some of the best we see all year. The ponds and shallow bays deep in the 9 mile area will be loaded with slot reds. Just watch your tide, and winds. A stout north wind will blow all the water out of the shallow ponds quickly. Dead shrimp tipped on a Matrix soft plastic on a 3/8 ounce jig head is all you need. If the water is low and clear, tight line em. If the water is high and dirty, put em under a. Boat Monkey popping cork. The big flounders should be on the move in November as well. The shore lines from lake borgne to Bayou Caddy are our favorite. It can be a lot of casting and slow bumping baits, but when you find em, it’s amazing!!! We like throwing live minnows or shrimp tipped soft plastics. Just keep the hooks wet and stay with it. Enjoy November it’s such a fun month to fish. Take the kids and take your friends. As always, have fun and be safe.

HUNTING Release the Hounds By Dustin Nelson

As I write this we are just 40 days away from all being good in the world. November 24, 2017 marks the opening day of Waterfowl season, and for the next 60 days, duck hunters all across the United States can fill bags of green tops, sprigs and whatever else. As for us in the South it has been an unfortunately hot Fall thus far but, it looks as if some cool air is on the way. With that comes the perfect opportunity to start running your four-legged friend through the motions. Some of us have seasoned dogs while others like myself are faced with the daunting task of training a brand new pup. I’ve seen a lot of dogs with great drive but lack the obedience it takes to be steady when it’s crunch time. We’ve all had the friend that brings his dog and it paces from one end of the boat to the other or sits on a stand whimpering uncontrollably. When those flying steaks are locked up the last thing you wanna see them do is flare. Not only is it beneficial to you and everyone around you to have an obedient dog, it’s also for the safety of the dog. For instance, a dog that has a habit of breaking before it’s sent can prove detrimental for the pup. You never know when there may be some low flying birds and a lot of times if you’re not the handler it’s hard

4 MISS_GULF

to notice the dog even broke. They don’t call em’ man’s best friend for no reason. It’s often that bond that anchors generations of duck hunters deep in the traditions of water fowling heritage. I know of some hunters that don’t even bring a gun to the woods and they just go to watch their dog work. I say that to say this, cherish every hunt you have with your best friend, and know that no matter how stubborn they can be sometimes that their sole purpose in life was just to make you happy. It is really and truly all they want. That’s a pretty admirable trait in my book and a scarce quality that humans lack. So take the time outta your day to train them and show compassion towards them as they love the sport just as much or more than we do.

HOGS: Should We Love Them or Hate Them?

HUNTING

Here in Mississippi, hogs are taking over and it is not a slow process. They were the first animals to be domesticated about 6000 years ago in China. De Soto brought them to the New World in 1539. There are hogs in 40 of our states here in the U.S. There are many bad things associated with hogs but there are many good things also. The number one thing for us as hunters is they are really fun to hunt. They are also very tasty. Insulin and about 40 other medications are made from pigs. Because of their acute sense of smell, they have been used as landmine sniffers in battlefields as drug sniffers for the DEA. The bad things far outweigh the good when you let these things loose to take over, and take over they will. One sow can have two litters of 8 to 16 piglets a year. They begin to reproduce at about six months old, so it won’t be long before her litter is producing their own litters and so on and so on. So, in a five-year period, that original sow could be responsible for the births of over 1000 piglets. They destroy crop fields. They will eat anything. They even love to eat snakes. They will literally fight over a snake. Can you imagine how many turkey nests and baby turkeys get eaten by them. What about baby quail, squirrels, and deer? Things to Know: 1. The lifespan of a wild hog is about 8 years 2. The gestation period for a wild hog is 115 days 3. Hogs communicate through various grunts 4. The heaviest hog on record is named “Big Bill” weighing in at 2551 lbs. 5. They don’t have any sweat glands, so they stay cool by staying out of direct sunlight, drinking water and wallowing in the cool mud. 6. A wild hogs squeal can be as loud as 115 decibels 7. It is said that a hog can smell a small peppermint 7’ in the ground 8. A wild hog can detect a human figure from 100 yards away 9. A sow can have 2 litters of 8 to 16 piglets a year. After six months, those piglets will reproduce. Then, their piglets will reproduce. So, one sow can be responsible for over the births of over 1000 piglets in a 5-year period. 10. When a wild hog eats a deer, there is no evidence left. They eat bones and all. 11. A wild hogs top speed is between 30-35 mph, for short bursts. They can run a mile in 7 minutes, with a cruising speed of around 11 mph. 12. Did you know Wall Street got its name from hogs? Yes, on Manhattan Island farmers built a wall beside their crop fields to keep the hogs out. The street built along the wall became known as “Wall Street” COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

PELAGIC PREDATORS By Nelson Outdoors Pro – Derek Stiglet

Derek Stiglet with a Wahoo

A l o n g w i t h t h e Tu n a f i s h i n g t h i s t i m e o f ye a r a l s o comes great Wahoo fishing. As Summer comes to an end and Fall approaches, plus size wahoo between 60100lbs, star t showing up in higher quantities. Wahoo are a ferocious, Pelagic Predator known for their sharp, razor-like teeth and blistering speed which can reach 60 mph!! A Wahoo attack ing a bait at this speed will leave the drag screaming as they make their initial run after being hooked. The main necessity in your tackle f o r r i g g i n g f o r w a h o o i s s t e e l l e a d e r. W h e t h e r y o u a r e live baiting, trolling a lipped shake bait, high speed trolling or even dropping jigs down deep under a bait pod under a sargassum line, Steel leader is a must-have when targeting wahoo due to their sharp teeth and abrupt attacks that can sever a monofilament leader on contact. I typically tie a 4-5ft length of steel leader using a haywire twist knot to a ball bearing swivel that is tied directly to the monofilament mainline. Then a haywire twist to the lure or live bait stinger rig of your choice. My go-to baits can vary from a Rapala X-Rap 30s or Bomber CD30s pulled at 5-8 knots, to a live hardtail being slow trolled around 2 knots, to a high speed jet head lure pulled between 12-18 knots even up to 20 knots!! Besides the variety of fishing techniques you may choose for targeting wahoo, never leave the dock w i t h o u t a n a m p l e s u p p l y o f s t e e l l e a d e r. T h e s e toothy critters put up a heck of a run and their “racing” stripes along their body light up in the blue water as they near the surface for a gaff shot!

The Fall transition is now in full affect. This is the time of year where I love to sit back on a relaxing afternoon and strip the ten and twelve-pound test fluorocarbon line from my reels and change over to fifteen and seventeen-pound fluorocarbon line. I do this because I am specifically targeting cover. I want to add a little strength to my line so that it will hold up to the abuse I plan give it. I am looking for laydowns, submerged trees, vegetation or lightly scattered lily pads. Why? Because this is a typical place for baitfish to hide from bass and a perfect place for bass to ambush bait. Keep in mind that the bass are trying to fatten themselves up for the colder months. They are hitting anything that even slightly resembles bait fish. The typical pattern for me is to start out by picking up a square bill. Bright colors like chartreuse or white around the mouth of a creek seems to always do the trick when searching for those aggressive bass. The square bill is a great shallow water search bait because it is designed to stay in the two to four-foot range which is exactly where the bait fish will be. It reflects a fleeing baitfish and any bass that can see the opportunity to steal a meal will more than likely go for it. Another great fact is that it deflects off of timber, rocks and even grass, adding to its erratic movements which triggers bites from big bass. This is another reason why the square bill is always tied on during the Fall transition. Bass just cannot resist its erratic swimming action. As the morning progresses and the sun starts to raise the water temps, I typically move from my initial spots that I started out on using other techniques that we will discuss in next month’s issue. But, I want to let you in on a secret of mine that has worked wonders for 10 MISS_GULF

NOVEMBER 2017

nov_GULF_2017.indd 10

me over the years. When the sun is peaked and the water temps are at their highest, go back to the same area that you started your morning out on and start all over again with this in mind. If you had success on the square bill, throw it again, or try to go up a size or two. If not, then have three other baits ready to throw. Start by pitching big jigs into cover, have a spinner bait tide on and never forget the jerk bait. Remember to stay with natural colors. The bass may have been finicky that morning, but with the water temperature changing, and with more light penetration, you may have a better chance. I’ve had a lot of success just by following those simple steps. I hope this helps your chances of catching that fish of a lifetime. See you out on the water.

Parker Poles

Brad Parker By Cameron Staff

I

t’s an overcast evening in Vancleave, Mississippi and a light drizzle on the windshield is a sign of the rain to come. I’ve just arrived at the Parker Poles workshop to meet with owner Brad Parker to discuss his craft and custom fishing rods. We exchange greetings and handshakes in the driveway before heading into the shop. “I even turned the A/C for ya” he jokes as we walk in. The shop is a nice sized metal building, some of which is used for storage while the rest serves as the rod shop. There is a room with a workbench and tools of the trade that is used for repairs and custom rod-work. The outside of the room is lined with rod blanks, various grips, rods for repair, and crafted custom rods. Tell me a little bit about your background: I was raised on a chicken farm in Carthage, MS. Even though I spent most of my time in Central MS, I spent my holidays on the MS Gulf Coast with my Dad. I was blessed to be exposed to both freshwater and saltwater fishing my entire life because of this. After graduating from MSU, I took a job as an Industrial Engineer at Ingalls in Pascagoula. This move enabled me to fish even more saltwater. The more I fished, the more I

became frustrated with production rods. I couldn’t find the rod I needed. This frustration pushed me to find a better solution. I ended up taking a rod building class in Florida. From there I started building for myself and a few friends. American Tackle Company noticed some of my rods and signed me up for their team. Between the doors American Tackle opened and the demand for my rods, I opened Parker Poles. Aside from being American Tackle Company Pro Staff, what has been a big break for Parker Poles? It would have to be Captain Ronnie Daniels. I have been building rods for his charter business and tv show for a few years now. This relationship has helped me get the Parker Poles name out there. What is the best thing about building your own rods? In the beginning it was about being able to create my own rod that fit me. Now I enjoy doing the same for my customers. It is very satisfying building rods for people that are serious about fishing and can appreciate the time I spend to create a rod that performs better than they expected.

What does the future hold for Parker Poles? I have a business plan I have been working on. I hope that in time I will have the time and money to make it a reality. I am working toward having three lines of rods: A budget minded production line, a mid-range line of “stock” rods, and a high end custom line. I first met Brad speaking at a seminar at Ocean Marine in Ocean Springs, but you can catch him at the upcoming Biloxi Boat Show. Thanks to the knowledge, hard work, and craftsmanship of engineer Brad Parker, Parker Poles is firing on all cylinders with no signs of stopping.

FLY FISHING

Pumpkin Spice ‘

Fly Fishing Forecast – November By Captain Richard Schmidt www.richardschmidtflyfishing.com November is the Harvest Season. decorations around the house start consisting of fall foliage and pumpkins. When I see pumpkin decorations come out of the attic, I know it’s time to start tying some big flies and venture out to my own pumpkin patch. But the pumpkins I’m looking for are big and they swim in the water. This is the time of year when, the big bull redfish (over 20 pounds) have just finished their spawning offshore and move back into the shallows to fatten up for the winter. The bulls can usually be found lazily floating in about 16 inches to 2 feet of water on the outer edges of the marsh. The orange hue of the suspended pumpkin is a sight once seen,it is seldom forgotten. If they are not on the edges, I like to search the duck ponds in

the same manner I do for black drum. By now most of the drum have mysteriously disappeared and the big tails I see in the middle of the deeper ponds are from giant redfish. To feed these large fish, I throw a large fly. Like the fat kid at McDonald’s says “Super Size Me!” Whatever redfish fly you have the most confidence in, use that pattern, just tie it bigger or supersize it! I like to use a mullet pattern tied on a 2/0. I especially like the Sandbar Mullet tied by Nick Vlahos of Sandbar Flies. My favorite colors for fall are purple and black and if/when I get refusals on purple and black, I switch to a lighter colored fly like white and red. I also keep a bunch of bunny tailed, tarpon toad looking flies in my box except they will have medium

sized lead eyes to get them down to the business end of the fish. If I get refusals on those flies, I will sprinkle them with pumpkin spice and most big female redfish can’t refuse it. To throw these bigger flies with accuracy, you may want to use a ten weight rod. I use an eight weight rod, mainly because I do not own a

ten. I use a short (8 feet or less) 16 pound test leader with a 20 pound test fluorocarbon tied to the end to protect it a little from the oyster shells. I hope yall get to enjoy a Pumpkin Spice Mochalatte-chino this fall and most importantly get a chance to visit the pumpkin patch.

PADDLE SPORTS Paddling the Ms Barrier Islands By Eric Richards Pascagoula Paradise Paddlers One of the great advantages we paddlers have in living on the Mississippi Coast is the variety of paddling venues. The cypress swamps, the rivers, the marshes, the barrier islands. The barrier islands? Yes. They are much more accessible for paddling than most people realize. They can be reached by paddling, but this requires the right kayak, lots of experience and training, and paddling stamina, as it’s at least a three hour trip each way. Throw in the potential weather issues, and this method of barrier island paddling is very difficult. But, if you travel to the islands by boat, why not throw your kayak in the boat? One or two kayaks in the typical 20 to 25’ island boats can be crowded, but is very feasible. It takes a little effort to load them, and some foam pads and bungee cords to secure them, but it opens up one of my favorite venues for paddling

on the coast. Once you reach the island (Petit Bois and Horn are my destinations of choice), and unload, you’ve got miles of scenic beaches to cruise along. One huge benefit is that you can stop anywhere along the way and stretch your legs or explore the island. Also with the clear water that is found at the islands, you’ll enjoy watching fish, crabs, dolphins, and even the occasional alligator swim underneath you. Yes, alligators occasionally venture out into the sound from the island ponds. The best paddling is on the north side of the islands, since it’s shallow and calmer than the south side. Paddling the south side of the islands should be done only by very experienced paddlers due to the rougher conditions, including breaking waves. Also, the tips of the islands should also be avoided as the currents can be very strong there.

Using a boat to transport your kayak or board also allows for a little more sophisticated camping if you would like to stay for more than one day. Hauling your camping gear on a kayak to the barrier islands means that you have to pack extremely light, and with that gear your weather limitations are greater. If you’re hauling everything in a boat, heck, throw in the Yeti, along with a nice tent and air mattress. Make yourself comfortable. Save your energy for paddling along the island. For reference, Petit Bois is

approximately 6 miles long and Horn is about 14 miles long. One option is to anchor the boat near the middle of the island and make a morning paddle in one direction and an afternoon paddle in the other. Even better is to have a nonpaddling friend drop you off at one end of the island and pick you up at the other end. If you’ve not done it, paddling the islands is a whole new paddling experience. As with all paddling, use common sense and good judgement and have a great time!

Kayak Fishing Report By: Benton Parrott Hobie Regional Team Everything Kayak Pro Staff Fishing Guide dbparrott@bellsouth.net Cooler temperatures mean cooler waters and fall fishing should be heating up. I like being able to cover all the water columns so I’m always ready with several rods rigged up when I hit the water. Starting off with topwaters usually being a skitterwalk or spook jr depending on the wind. Then for my mid-range in the shallows I like throwing mirrodine or shad rap shad. Both do well producing reds

and trout. Soft plastics and cover all ranges depending on how you rig them. I usually use a ¼ to 1/8 oz. jig head flutter bouncing them off the bottom. Bull reds should be gathering in passes and off the bar. I like using 6” curly tail on a jig head or a surface popper for some fun. These large schools of bulls make it easy to sight cast when they are swimming through. Not to miss in November. Nov.4h is Spankn the Specks in Gulfport, MS. This is a 3-speckled trout stringer tournament with honors going to the top 3 anglers. There are also awards for largest red and flounder. Its only $40 to enter and you can sign up at www.everythingkayak.com or at the store Everything Kayak 15240 Creosote RD. Gulfport, MS. We keep a running tab of all the happenings in the kayak community on our Facebook page Kayak Fishing U. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360-degree light on at dark and low light conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT WORLD’S BEST ANCHOR – TRUE OR NOT TRUE? By CAM Staff For tress Marine Anchors tout their super lightweight anchors as “the world’s best anchor.” After field testing their model FX-7 on boats from 18 feet to 24 feet, we absolutely agree. These anchors are so lightweight a child could pull them back in. The sharp edge/ point easily secures to any bottom. For boaters not able to enjoy the ease of a “windlass” anchor system, the Fortress super lightweight anchors are the next best thing. If you ever retrieve or throw a Fortress Anchor, you will never go back to the belief that “heavier is better.” It’s not, and these anchors are definite “game changers.”

TIPS FROM A PRO

FRESHWATER BRANDON LESTER

B

eing from middle Tennessee, I was introduced to many diverse fisheries in my younger years. This area of the country has long been known for great smallmouth bass fishing, as it should be, but in my opinion it can’t compare to the smallmouth fishing in the Great Lakes region right now. I am certainly not bashing the smallmouth fishing down south, but fishing the Elite Series allows me to see some of the best lakes in the country, and the “good ole days” of smallmouth bass fishing on the Great Lakes is right now. Flowing out of Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River is one of my favorites on our schedule because it fishes similar to the rivers back home. The river has a lot of current, which positions the fish. The water is clear, and you can catch smallmouth from 2 feet deep all the way out to 60 feet. The St. Lawrence is absolutely full of smallmouth, and 30- to 40fish days are just another day on the water. In addition to the fishing, the area is also just an awesome place to spend time. Waddington, N.Y., which is our host city when we go, is in a very rural part of New York with lots of cropland and cattle farms. If you’ve not visited this fishery, I strongly suggest you do. Lake St. Clair is on fire right now. The final Elite Series tournament of the regular season was held there this year, and overall bass weights were absolutely phenomenal. The big smallmouth of the tournament weighed almost 7 pounds. In the past, tournaments on St. Clair were won by guys who ran to Lake Erie or Lake Huron, but not anymore. It seems now that St. Clair is the place to be. The style of fishing is different than most smallmouth destinations. Lake St. Clair is just a big bowl-shaped lake with a shipping channel running through the middle of it. That’s about the only real contour change on the whole lake. The big keys are

looking for clean spots in the grass and finding bait. If that doesn’t fit your style, you can run up the river toward Huron or down the Detroit River toward Erie. Both rivers have plenty of current and plenty of smallmouth. After fishing a tournament on Lake Champlain this year, it is my new favorite lake in the country. The smallmouth fishing is phenomenal, and you can catch big largemouth, too. The smallmouth hang out on offshore shoals, old bridge blow-throughs and rocky structure around the shoreline. If you get tired of catching them, there is an abundance of milfoil, docks and reeds where largemouth bass are willing and ready to bite. Lake Champlain, in my opinion, has the healthiest population of bass of anywhere I have ever fished, and that makes it fun, period. Plattsburg, N.Y. is a great place to visit, as well, with lots of cool sites to see. If you make one of these trips, be sure you’re prepared with the right MHX rods, Mustad hooks and Vicious fishing line. Hit Brandon up on Facebook or Instagram with any questions.

t’s got the beaches, with fine white sand and the emerald green waters of the gorgeous northern Gulf of Mexico. It’s got the nightlife, the shopping and fine dining, the beautiful golf courses and everything else that draws vacationers from around the world. But what Destin, Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island—the heart of northwest Florida’s Emerald Coast—have more of than anything else is fishing. Back in 1956, Florida Gov. Leroy Collins called Destin “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” after catching a big king mackerel on a 15-minute photo-op boat ride during the Destin Fishing Rodeo. More than 60 years later, the historic Destin Fishing Rodeo just wrapped up its 69th annual October-long event, proving once again that this fishing village is just as lucky as ever. Daily weigh-ins at the rodeo give spectators a close look at what the waters off the Emerald Coast have to offer. Excitement builds on the docks in front of the landmark AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar when big tuna, wahoo, king mackerel, dolphin, groupers and snappers come to the scales. And in the Billfish Division, the big sportfishing yachts are out there pulling spreads for sailfish—and marlin that easily eclipse the 500-pound mark. There have been a couple grander blue marlin caught on the northern Gulf Coast over the years and a few more that came very close to tipping the scales past the 1,000-pound mark. Even swordfish show up pretty regularly, meaning there’s a real possibility for a grand slam fishing out of the marinas of Okaloosa County. It’s world-class fishing on the Panhandle, which in recent years has seen the big pelagic species moving closer to shore with changing currents. And what’s more, the action is yearround. There’s a good reason the world’s largest charter fishing fleet is based out of Destin Harbor.

Nearshore

Nearshore, warm and fertile Gulf waters coupled with numerous wrecks and reefs to create some of the most bountiful fishing Florida has to offer. With a short boat ride less than 8 miles off the beach, anglers can bottom fish or troll with family pleasing and cooler-filling consistency for amberjack, numerous snapper and grouper species, cobia, blackfin tuna, king and Spanish mackerel and more.

Offshore

Due south about 25 to 30 miles out, the continental shelf drops and there are multiple renowned hotspots, with some of the best big game fishing in the Gulf. South Florida seems to get most of the bright, hot spotlight when it comes to the big pelagics, but serious anglers out of the Emerald Coast quietly and consistently catch serious fish. Whether it’s a full-day trolling trip or an overnight expedition deep into the Gulf, dolphin, blue marlin, tuna and

wahoo are available to those who mean business when it comes to fishing.

Inshore

Those who would rather explore grass flats and oyster beds in search of trout or tailing redfish will also find that on the Emerald Coast. Inside East Pass and Okaloosa Island, Choctawhatchee Bay spreads out vast and shallow. It’s the perfect place to launch a skiff or a kayak into 130 square miles of inshore action that’s some of the best on the Panhandle.

Spring Cobia

Finally, any discussion of fishing options around the Emerald Coast has to include the cobia run, which is one of the best on the planet. Book your charter now, because in spring—peaking in April—cobia that have migrated north along the Gulf Coast arrive off the beaches bringing some of the most exciting fishing there is. This is sight fishing for one of the ocean’s tastiest and hardest fighting fish, and during this spring run they can arrive with weights in excess of 100 pounds. With a spotter in the tower, you cruise the clear blue-green waters looking for the telltale brown shadows of a pod of cobia doggedly pushing west. With a Airline_CoastalAnglerAd_3-2016_Layout 1 3/18/16 1:07 PM Page 1 smooth approach, the boat moves to intercept, and then it’s up to the angler to make an accurate cast with a live bait or a jig. Anticipation is almost unbearable for a few seconds before the take, and then bedlam breaks loose. Cobia put up the most unpredictable fight in fishing. They are capable of long, drag-burning runs, leaps, rolls and deep dives, but sometimes they save the thrashing until they hit the deck. Either way, catching a big cobia is exciting, and there’s no better grilling fish that swims. So, while the Emerald Coast offers gorgeous beaches and all the activity of a top-notch beach vacation destination, on the water it remains what it was before the Miracle Strip and Harbor Boulevard grew up around it. It’s one of the best fishing destinations in the world in terms of quality, quantity and variety of angling opportunities. For information, go to www.emeraldcoastfl. com.
