PUBLISHER
t’s the most wonderful time of the year! Not only is December the month that Santa Claus comes to town, but this month offers some really good fishing in South Florida. Sailfish will begin moving through our local waters in larger numbers with each passing cold front. Be sure to keep a 20 to 30 pound spinning outfit with a pitch bait ready to go as some of the biggest dolphin of the year will be caught just offshore this month. The prevailing winds from the northeast will push baitfish closer to the beach and the dolphin will follow to pick up an easy meal. Cobia will be cruising the reefs too and will often swim right up to the boat out of curiosity. When they do, you’ll be happy you had a pitch bait ready. December is also the last month to catch grouper as the season closes on January 1st. There are some big ones hanging out on the deeper wrecks just waiting for you to drop a bait on their heads. As we enter the Holiday season, I would like to say thank you to all of our advertisers for their support as we work on growing our free publication. Please support our advertisers and distribution partners by visiting their businesses and buying local. In closing, I would like to wish each and every one of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and all the best for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Keep reelin,

inter is here and a completely new batch of fish are showing up. You have to be adaptive this time of year and change your tactics to meet the new challenges that the winter months bring with them. First off, let’s talk about the strong winds of December. The prevalent wind off Fort Lauderdale for the months of December through February is a medium to strong Northeast wind. This wind direction, coupled with it’s velocity, creates some of the roughest seas we experience in Fort Lauderdale all year long. It’s fairly common to have 4-6 foot seas this time of year. This is great for us larger charter boats because it keeps a lot of the small boats in from fishing and makes for less competition for fish and for spots. We use the heavy wind to our advantage and employ a technique called kite fishing. Kite fishing is where we fly kites off the
forecastS back of the boat that we use to suspend live baits on the surface of the water. The baits are held in the kite line by pressure release clips and are set to dangle right on the surface of the water. The bait struggles to keep its head underwater and creates fish-indistress vibrations. This attracts big game fish such as sailfish from a long distance away. It’s the most effective way to target big game fish in the strong winds of the winter months. The other hot bite this month is dolphin. The strong northeasterly winds of December blow the dolphin in close to the reef. However, that’s not the whole truth. Flying fish are one of the main fish that mahi-mahi eat offshore. When flying fish jump out of the water and spread their fins, they get blown in the direction the wind is going. When the northeast winds are puffing for a few days in a row, the surviving flying fish get progressively closer and closer to shore. That means, after a few days of strong northeasterly

winds, you can expect the dolphin to be in on the reefs in anywhere from 40-120 feet of water. With dolphin, it’s all about the food, so if the food comes inshore, so do the dolphin. There’s great fishing in the winter months and the general rule is the worse the weather, the better the fishing.

he cooler temperatures of December are such a relief from the hot summer we just went through. Even the fall was pretty warm for us this year. With the cooler temperatures, fish like cobia that normally stay deep, rise to the surface water column and are the perfect big game quarry for the drift boats. Cobia patrol the reefs and are most often seen following behind slow moving marine creatures such as sea turtles, rays, big sharks and whales. In December, a common scenario is to have a school of cobia swim right up to the boat and follow slowly behind it. The fastest angler to get bait pitched out there wins the fish. Sometimes a few cobia show up at once, which creates a frenzy of action and some much desired chaos in the cockpit. When I go drift fishing, I always keep a pitch bait ready, just in case a hungry dolphin or cobia swims up to the boat. It helps if you’re wearing some polarized sunglasses and can see down deeper and through the glare of the sun on the top of

the water. That extra or second or two you get to react for spotting the fish first is usually all it takes to be the lucky angler on the trip. Normally, we’re bottom fishing on our drift boat trips, but by keeping a pitch bait at the ready, pays off big-time when you need it. Success happens when preparation meets opportunity. Kingfish, tunas and snappers are also biting good on our drift fishing trips this month. Snappers bite especially good this month and can be caught equally good DECEMBER 2017
on the daytime drift or the night time anchor trips. Yellowtails, mangroves and mutton snappers are our main snapper catch in less than 100 feet of water. Lots of mutton snappers are biting this year, many more than last year. They just raised the size limit on muttons and although we have to throw a lot higher percentage of them back because they are shorts, I can already see the big increase in their numbers. This is a great thing for the future of fishing. Deeper than 100 feet of water,
Good luck to everyone fishing this month. The action on dolphin and sailfish should be great. I’ll sea you on the water.

we catch the vermilion snappers. Lots of variables come into play to successfully catch vermilions including current, wind, speed of the drift, depth, time of day and too many others to list. When the conditions are right, you can crush the vermilion snappers and everyone on the boat gets hooked up with every hook you have in the water. This is the last month for groupers until they close on January 1. We’ve been catching a lot of larger sized black and red groupers the past few weeks. It’s great to see groupers starting to make a comeback. The secret to grouper is to use heavy enough gear to get them out of the rocks before they can take you into their hole and cut you off. It’s an art to catch groupers that’s easy to learn but takes a lifetime to master. Lots of good action to be had fishing the Fort Lauderdale reefs. Enjoy the cooler weather and the good bite while it is here. Tight lines and good luck out there.

he month of December means Sailfish in Pompano Beach. It’s still early for the big sailfish pods, but they are starting to come through. You can bet on catching them in 60 to 200 feet. Most of the time I will catch a nice sailfish when we are heading out off Pompano Pier in the morning in shallow depths around 70 feet. Fishing over the deep wrecks will also produce some nice sailfish. For kayak anglers without a GPS just look for the charter boats and you will find them. Some nice kingfish are being caught straight out from the mouth of Hillsboro Inlet in 70 to 120 feet of water. Some of the kings are topping 30lbs. The rat kingfish are scattered in 60 to 80 feet. Try putting a live goggle eye down deep with a downrigger or an egg sinker. Most of my bites have been in medium depth on the slow troll. You can still catch some scattered blackfin tuna over the

s children all across Florida wait for jolly old Saint Nick and his wrapped gifts from the North Pole, December can be a tricky time of year. Big kids await mother nature's forecast, patiently waiting to plan the next fishing trip or two as the holidays often bring travel to the sunny state. Despite the weather conditions with winds usually howling from the north or east and often keeping vessels at bay or on dry land, freshwater fishing can be done in almost any condition and you don't even need a boat. My land based guide service is going on seven years. It was created out of public demand through several social media sites and has been a pleasure not only learning the business, but the fishery as well. Observation is one of my most powerful tools, especially in the ever changing conditions

deep wrecks in 180 to 200 feet. Lots of dolphin have been caught right out front in Pompano Beach. The schoolies are being caught from 200 to 300 feet with the bigger dolphin finally coming through in 180 to 200 feet. Some 20 pound plus fish are being caught in the afternoon.
Traditionally, the afternoon bite in general has been good for me in December. The deep wrecks are still producing the monster amberjacks. Try dropping a glow jig or a tiger striped Jimy Jig as they seem to work best for me. Send a live goggle eye down deep for a shot at a wahoo on the
of South Florida. A good pair of polarized glasses are essential to successful sight fishing. They allow me as the guide to first see if peacocks or other exotic species are in a cycle of spawn. Targeting them while spawning and at their most fragile state, can greatly reduce fry survival. During spawn, they are not much of a challenge and they tend to fight much less due to higher stress levels. Instead, look for peacocks that are swimming in schools and try to take your pick at the largest or most aggressive, but don’t take too much time deciding as the fish will move on quickly. If a pair of peacocks are set on protecting or inhabiting any small area, odds are they are nesting or in a cycle of spawn and it’s best to let them be. A good pair of glasses with the right lenses will allow you to see this and you’ll pick up a vast array of information along the way. After careful inspection, you can see the bed of eggs. They are normally off white to a light
golden color, often found on something flat like PVC pipes, bottles, cans, limestone ledges or flat rocks. This attention to detail is a must for responsible angling today to ensure a great fishery, if not better for tomorrow. Flying Fisherman sunglasses are the brand I use. The company is family operated and located in the upper Keys near Islamorada. They offer a wide range of glasses for the entire family and are available with prescription lenses and more affordable than some of the leading brands. My favorite are the polycarbonate frames with RhinoLenses and AcuTint lens coloring. At the end of the day, I'm just a regular fisherman trying to share my world with others. With the saved money, I can purchase two or three pairs in various shades or more of my favorite fishing tackle and gear. The Okinawa Tug: Before & After Irma
I
took this photo of the Okinawa Tug and Dive Bar on Aug 18th, the night before she was towed out and sunk one nautical mile east of the Pompano Beach Pier. The next morning was a perfect sinking and I took photos and video from my boat while the tug became a perfect artificial reef, landing upright and intact. The Okinawa was a 107 foot Army Tug. Now underwater, the wheelhouse reaches to a shallow depth of just 35 feet. Artist Dennis MacDonald created the Dive Bar amidships with a mermaid bartender, eels, starfish and reef fish as customers. The mermaid gazes into a reflective globe looking off to the stern of the tug. Hurricane Irma got in the way of a lot of divers getting the chance to check out the new wreck, including me and a buddy. We were way overdue to get our kayaks out freediving, so in the morning on a weekday in early November we hit Pompano Beach. It started out calm but didn’t stay that way long as the current was running to the south with a king tide and green water. I knew it was going to be tough gearing up and juggling the GPS, the paddle and a GoPro while trying to remain on the site, then slipping into 70 feet of Ocean. As soon as we did, I couldn’t see anything. So, when in doubt – dive! At 20 feet it cleared up some, but no wreck or bottom was in sight and at 40 feet I started
to drift down current and zig zag, hoping to spot the wreck. I was exhausted, but luckily I saw the big dark shadow off to the east and kicked to her and ascended above the tug. The current was making it tough to relax and breathe up for the next dive, but fortunately the top of the wreck was just in view and the Dive Bar was just under it. On my next dive, I saw the hull was listing to port, so it would be a bit deeper. I dropped on the bow and had to swim past the stack to reach the Dive Bar. The magical mermaid was there, but with no globe in hand. I couldn’t imagine anyone taking this piece of art. My next drop was on the stern and I finally got a good look and shot some video of the Dive Bar, which was wrecked and gone with the exception of the mermaid and one of the bar tops laying on the seafloor. The Okinawa is a solid tugboat and will last through many storms to come, as will her mermaid. I have a feeling that she will not want long for a new globe. On the way back to shore, we shot a few lionfish on the Pompano drop off. These delicious fish are now our fall back dinner, and every lionfish we remove helps the reef. Shoot straight and dive safe!

all season is upon us. This means the weather will be changing hour by hour and day to day. One day it will be hot and steamy, the next raining and windy and then a cold front. This time of year also means high water and this year it is extremely high. So how do we get more fish tugging on our lines? This is how I approach it. You need to change with the weather patterns. Starting with cooler weather patterns. When it's cold you have to slow down! Worming or your bait of choice, but staying near the bottom is the way to go. Then there may be some days when it's windy on top of the cooler temperatures. Baits with blades such as spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and bladed swim baits should produce. On days when it's warmer try power fishing by casting and retrieving over and over. Use swim baits, swim jigs, and topwater baits. These are a few of my favorites. This is also a time of year to pay extra attention to the moon phases. The monster bass will soon be on the move into shallower water. On to the Hot Spots. #1 - South Miami: Peacock bass fishing is crazy good right now. Fish the airport lakes and canals, turnpike canals and urban canals. Some of my favorite baits are a topwater skitter pop, chugger, Strike King Mini King, X-Rap, Bass Pro XPS Popper and the for sure thing, LIVE SHINERS. #2 - Tamiami Trail: I've been hitting some good ones despite the conditions with all the high water. Worming the bottom, swimming baits such as swim jigs, Gambler Big Easy, Easy Swimmer, Fat Ace and the 16" Snake.

#3 - Holiday Park: Use the same baits previously mentioned just add in flipping the bait into the lily pads and cover. For those of you who do not have boats, Holiday Park rents them as our next hot spot. #4 - Sawgrass Recreational Park: You can always go out here and bend a rod. Sinkos, giggly head, Flat Rap and wacky worms just to name a few. If the water is dirty or cloudy, I like to go with dark colors such as june bug or black. If the water is cleaner or clear, I like lighter colors like green pumpkin or watermelon green. #5 - Holey Land: I have been catching some really nice fish by dragging worms on the bottom. #6 - Lake Okeechobee: If you can get out on a day where the
wind is calm, fish the outside grass. Swim jigs, Gambler’s Big Easy, Easy Swimmer and Fat Ace will work well. If it's blowing too hard to fish the outside, try to find cleaner water on the inside stretches to fish. #7 - Urban canals: Every month I talk about the urban canals. South Florida has thousands of canals, most of which are man made. A lot of these canals are connected in some way. They may be attached by culvert pipes or through aquifers. These canals are probably one of the best kept secrets here in South Florida. So many are loaded with trophy fish as they don't get the pressure that some of the other waterways get. As always, if you’re not going

to eat the fish you catch, please handle them with care and return them gently back to the water. If you see fishing line or trash that has not been disposed of properly, please pick it up. It's up to us fishermen and women to preserve our sport for generations to come. Till next time, Bent Rods and Tight Lines.

EXPERT ADVICE
Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
C
hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT XTRATUF LEGACY 2.0 Engineered to withstand the world’s toughest conditions, the Legacy 2.0 is a hardcore fishing boot 50 years in the making. The latest addition to XTRATUF’s iconic legacy collection features an advanced new outsole that surpasses the SRC slip resistance rating, a textured heel for easy on/off that won’t get caught in gill nets, and a contoured topline binding so it does not rub harshly against calves. Acid- and chemical-resistant uppers along with shin and bib guards keep fishermen protected while a Polyurethane insole ensures comfort for long days on deck. All boots within the Legacy collection are 100 percent waterproof with unique performance features. Each boot is made with XTRATUF’s signature triple dipping technique, which creates a seamless barrier that is highly resistant to many organic and inorganic acids, chemicals and contaminants. The latex neoprene is ozone resistant and is softer, lighter and far more pliable than ordinary rubber. Cushioned insoles with arch support help fight fatigue and stress on the legs and back. All XTRATUF Legacy boots come with a non-marking, slip-resistant Chevron outsole that provides unparalleled traction on any surface in the most extreme conditions.
