The Rise of Patrick Sebile and his Band of Anglers

By Ben Martin, Editor In Chief

F

or those who are familiar with legendary angler and lure inventor Patrick Sebile, it comes as no surprise that he would once again enter the realm of lure and fishing tackle manufacturing and development. A review of his contributions, influence and participation in the world of fishing is a testament to this man’s unmatched devotion and passionate dedication to every element of the sport. A brief review of the Patrick Sebile bona fides: • Holder of nearly 370 records (IGFA, EFSA & FFPM), such as largemouth bass world record by length, but also guided for more than 200 record catches like the All Tackle IGFA tarpon of 286 pounds, 9 ounces. • Top 10 all time biggest fish ever caught. • Voted one of the 10 best anglers in the world several times. • Once voted the world’s best saltwater captain. • Travelled and fished 64 countries to date. • Image/photo on more than 190 magazine covers. • Ranked No. 2 in IGFA’s “most species caught” with 774 different species. • Published in more than 800 magazines, newspapers and journals. • Inventor of more than 200 lures, rods, hooks, reels and various fishing tackle. • Author of seven books. With this extraordinary industry involvement and a lifetime of a passionate love for all aspects of fishing, it seems only natural and appropriate that Mr. Sebile would reunite with the fishing industry under the banner of A Band of Anglers. Welcome back, Patrick. Yes, your new lures are remarkable… as are you.

CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. The following are ICAST winners as well as the new products we feel are some of the most innovative, functional and… frankly impressive, offerings of the year.

or anglers, sonar technology is the most rapidly advancing and functional tool in the boat when it comes to catching more and better fish. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. Either view provides incredibly sharp, real-time scanning sonar images up to 200 feet out, even when the boat is stationary. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. A trolling motor barrel and shaft mounting kit and a transom mounting kit are also included.

A patented gel material paved the way for one of the most innovative tackle management solutions on the market. Lure Lock’s Lure Locker was awarded “Best Tackle Management” at ICAST 2018. Lure Lock’s proprietary ELASTAK GEL securely holds lures and terminal tackle in place. Even with the lid of a Lure Lock case open, you can turn it upside down and shake it and your lures stay in the box. Don’t believe it? Go to the website and watch the videos. The Lure Locker was designed to allow anglers to keep all their Lure Lock cases organized and ready. Constructed with durable ABS plastic, the Lure Locker securely stores up to five Lure Lock cases for ease of transport. It is available in three models, each designed to accept its corresponding Lure Lock case. The Lure Locker is also designed to hang on a wall or pegboard when not in use. correct amount of rigidity. Everyone hates a dull knife, so Outdoor Edge has included a two-stage knife sharpener to keep your edges razor sharp. Finally, Outdoor Edge designed a durable hard-side carry case to keep you organized on the boat and at the dock. With an MSRP of $64.95, be sure to look for the ReelFlex Pak this fall and holiday season.

The featured Rival sunglasses are in Raven color with a ColorBlast Grey Lens. These are perfect for spending long days on the water because of their larger fit and full-wrap coverage. The ColorBlast polarized lens technology filters blue light, which makes colors blast. Rivals retail for about $139. For more details on all styles, colors, and technology, visit the Unsinkable Polarized website.

Unsinkable Polarized had a groundbreaking, and perhaps a little crazy, idea. Because they are so confident in their products being the ultimate watersports sunglasses, they offer them with a Lifetime + Loss Warranty. With floating frames, all polarized lenses and that warranty, there should be nothing stopping anyone from getting a pair of Unsinkable Polarized sunglasses. Best Boating Accessory Minn Kota Built-In MEGA Down Imaging For the first time, anglers have the option of a trolling motor with built-in Down Imaging sonar. Minn Kota’s new Built-In MEGA Down Imaging earned “Best Boating Accessory” at ICAST 2018. Anglers can select a Minn Kota Ulterra, Terrova, Ultrex or Fortrex with the Humminbird Down Imaging transducer integrated into the trolling motor. Humminbird’s ultra-clear MEGA Imaging is the first Down Imaging technology to enter the megahertz range with performance nearly three times greater than traditional 455 kHz frequencies. It results in the clearest, sharpest on-screen images ever seen. With Built-In MEGA Down Imaging, the transducer is housed in the indestructible lower motor unit and the wiring runs through the composite shaft providing clean rigging that is protected from wear and tear.

Best Towing Accessory B&W Tow & Stow Adjustable Ball Mount B&W’s Tow & Stow Adjustable Ball Mount is the most innovative product in recent history when it comes to towing. It seems B&W thought of everything when they designed this receiver hitch. Because of that, it’ll be the last one you’ll ever buy. The Tow & Stow is adjustable to the height of your trailer, which is an important safety consideration, and it’s also super convenient for folks who have different trailers. Whether you’re pulling your boat, camper or equipment trailer, the Tow & Stow quickly and easily adjusts to the proper height, making towing less stressful and safer. For the same reasons, multiple ball sizes accommodate your boat, lawn mower or ATV trailer. This one hitch can be locked into your

As part of the OneBoat Network, Minn Kota trolling motors with BuiltIn MEGA Down Imaging feature i-Pilot Link GPS technology. Anglers can operate their trolling motor from the Humminbird unit, the app or the i-Pilot remote to “follow” a contour at a set speed with the press of a button. The new trolling motors are compatible with Humminbird SOLIX, second generation HELIX, and ONIX models and will be available in fall.

ayaker’s paradise might be the perfect description for the waters of Franklin County, Fla. Skinny waters inaccessible to powerboats are everywhere. In these shallows await redfish, trout, flounder, jack crevalle, pompano and more. Even freshwater species, like largemouth bass, bream and catfish can be had. There are more than 40 canoe/kayak launches in and around Franklin County, most are found within Tate’s Hell State Forest or the Apalachicola National Forest. Kayaker options also include the seemingly endless miles of shoreline along the bays, and the Gulf of Mexico is accessible at roadside.

Seasonal patterns, at times, will dictate the available species, but most are here for the taking all year. Live bait is always a sure bet, but you can keep your load light with a handful of artificial lures and have tremendous success. If you’re here in the fall, redfish will eagerly explode on a walking topwater plug like a Rapala Skitterwalk or a Zara Spook. Nothing will get an angler’s heart thumping more than seeing these bruisers blow up on the surface and peel drag. Trout are also in full force in the fall, and a MirrOlure MirrOdine is hard to beat, but they too, will chomp topwater plugs. Jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp! Shrimp should always be part of your line-up, because they will catch nearly anything that swims. North winds can make the shallows along the Gulf perfect for a kayak fishing trip, and late summer to early fall can provide king and Spanish mackerel action that can’t be rivaled. Steel leaders and stout reels are a must because these toothy critters will strip drag like a freight train before giving up. The Carrabelle and Apalachicola rivers are teaming with bass, bream and catfish, but don’t be surprised if you get caught up just trying to take in the breathtaking scenery and wildlife found in these tidal waters. Otters, turtles, alligators and an endless array of shore birds can be seen in these pristine and diverse ecosystems. The Apalachicola Paddle Jam festival will be held Oct. 5-7. Be a part of history as we attempt to set a new Guinness Book World Record for the largest floating gathering of kayaks! This three-day festival celebrates the Forgotten Coast through paddle sports, music and food, with events happening at various locations in Apalachicola. This event promises to be huge fun! If you’ve never experienced the peace and joy that kayaking can bring, then add this to your bucket list and give it a go; there’s a reason this sport is growing so rapidly. Come see why this area is a kayaker’s paradise! Franklin County features several kayak and boat rentals. For a complete list of rentals, charters and supplies, visit www.floridasforgottencoast.com.

et’s face it, tournament fishing is a male-dominated sport. Women anglers have been striving to make a name for themselves in the co-ed format of tournament fishing, but few have prevailed. On June 23, 2018, North Carolina’s Bass Nation set sail in the BASS Eastern Regional in an effort to win their third championship title. Out of 350 anglers, 175 co-anglers and 175 boaters, one was co-angler Angela Mayo. Though encouraged by her husband for many years to fish with him, Angela resisted at the hand of raising their children and her career as a legal assistant at Sigmon, Clark, Mackie, Hanvey, and Ferrell. Once she agreed, he used his 40-plus years of bass-fishing knowledge to teach Angela everything he knew. She was a quick learner and a natural angler. Thus, a great woman angler evolved. They fished many tournaments together, and in 2014 she joined the Ladies Bass Angler Association (LBAA) as a co-angler. In her second LBAA tour, she earned Co-Angler of the Year. The very next year she braved the venture of “taking charge” and moved over to the boater’s side. In her first year as a boater, she won the LBAA’s 2016 Rookie Angler of the Year. Along the way, Angela amassed an impressive list of local and national sponsors: FishStyx Custom Rods, Angler’s Choice Marine, Mercury Marine, Shiner’s Stash Jerky, Howl-a-Day Inn, Davis Brother’s Automotive, Adventive Graphics, UPS of Hickory #0455, Dr. William Straka... and the list continues to grow as she makes a name for herself in the industry.

She also joined a local bass fishing club, Thermal Belt Bassmaster, as a non-boater, and quickly advanced as a state qualifier. She won for her team on Lake Wylie, which left her as one of the top 10 anglers with a spot at the BASS Eastern Regional tournament held at Winyah Bay, S.C. Anglers from 47 states and nine countries participate in these events. Only those at the top of their game earn their way to the next level. During the BASS Eastern Regional, Angela made history for North Carolina and women anglers. As she weighed in her third day limit, the emcee announced that she had won, making her the first female on the North Carolina non-boater team to move on to the national championship. Angela will compete as a non-boater for the first two days of the BASS National Championship on Nov. 8-9 at Lake Pickwick. The leader after day two, who will have already won a boat, will move on to the boater’s side to compete. On day three, it’s an even playing field with everyone competing to be one of the top three anglers to obtain an invitation to the Bassmaster Classic! No woman has ever fished a Classic qualifying through a co-ed platform. Remember Angela Mayo. She has already achieved a “first” in fishing history, and she has a solid chance to obtain another.

ake the aggression of a largemouth and the fight of a smallmouth; mix them together in gorgeous scenery one might normally associate with trout. This is the recipe for shoal bass on the upper end of Georgia’s Chattahoochee River. It’s river fishing for a bass that’s as game as gamefish come. Between trout water in the mountains and bustling Lake Lanier, shoal bass thrive in a short stretch of this 430-mile river near the north Georgia towns of Clarkesville and Cleveland. Here, the water is much wilder and more sparsely developed than you’d expect from the lifeblood of Atlanta. The river’s rocky shoals offer perfect habitat for the Chattahoochee’s native river bass. Shoal bass were widespread along the entire course of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin before extensive damming after the 1940s turned the Chattahoochee into a series of large reservoirs along the Georgia/Alabama border. Those reservoirs offer great fishing of their own, but it’s a good thing Georgia DNR identified suitable habitat in several places along the Chattahoochee to reintroduce shoal bass. They are a ton of fun to catch. Jake Darling, of Unicoi Outfitters out of Helen, Ga., is turning people on to a great summer and early fall shoal bass fishery on upper ’Hooch. He said winter is when they catch big shoalies into the 5-pound range on jigs and soft plastics, but when the water is warm these feisty critters look up to feed. They will readily jump on a popping bug, and there’s nothing like the excitement of 2-pound bass exploding on top before bulldogging a deep bend into a 5-weight fly rod. Moving water puts extra muscle on fish, and shoal bass are a perfect example of this. They live their lives swimming against the cur-

rent, darting out from eddies and seams to feed on crayfish, aquatic insects and baitfish. They might not have the size of their larger black bass cousins, but they make up for it with pulling power. On a warm summer morning, Jake launched his small and lightweight Smith Fly raft on a gorgeous stretch of river that runs through north Georgia’s Buck Shoals Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The WMA is a good place to access a long stretch of shoals perfect for wading anglers, but the raft allowed us to navigate broken water and a couple of significant rapids to areas other anglers cannot reach. Bob Rice, publisher of The Angler Magazine’s Atlanta/ North Georgia edition, and I took the angler’s seats in the raft while Jake pulled the oars and directed us to good numbers of shoal bass, some colorful redear sunfish, bluegills and spotted bass. The biggest shoal bass was probably better than 2-pounds and came all the way out of the water to cream a Double Barrel Bass Bug popped through an eddy. We also caught fish on top with Stealth Bombers and subsurface with a Rubber Legged Dragon and big streamers fished on intermediate sinking lines. Anyone who’s fished for shoal bass will tell you they offer the best attributes of largemouths, smallmouths and trout. Some might argue they are better sport than all three. lthough the first day of fall occurs in the month of September, it sure doesn’t feel like it in any waters where redfish live. Fortunately, redfish don’t mind the heat and can be an easy target in the shallow marsh. September is a great month for kayak anglers who love the adrenaline rush of sight casting to shallow-water reds. The shrimp are maturing and abundant this time of year. On a recent trip where I fish in Texas, I had shrimp jumping into the kayak on every muddy shoreline I traveled. When fishing in scenarios such as this, I prefer to throw soft-plastic paddletails. Locating the reds from a distance can be easy when the water is this shallow and the bait is this plentiful. One key giveaway is hovering seagulls. You can bet if a gull is snatching shrimp out of the air, there are hungry fish below them. When kayaking, it depends on the distance as to whether or not I will try to chase down the hungry and potentially fast-moving school. If I am not willing to make the move, I try to watch for a pattern as to where the fish are feeding and stage my kayak in a similar location nearby. This could be along points, in the middle, or in front of drains.

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2

On this particular trip, I noticed skittish bait and distant birds along a north shoreline. I positioned my kayak within casting distance of that shore and fan casted until I saw nervous bait. Once spotted, I would wait for them to cruise the shore into range. When the time was right, I placed my lure with the fleeing shrimp resulting in aggressive strikes. This was the pattern they held most of the day; however I did catch a few in the middle of the cove as well. If I was not seeing nervous bait, I would fan cast 360 degrees to cover more water. I even had a few keeper-sized trout hanging out in the hot, shallow and muddy marsh. This area was roughly 10 feet deep throughout with a silty mud bottom, and the water color closely resembled chocolate milk. The air temp was in the mid 90s, but that didn’t deter the fish from feeding midday through 5 p.m. The strikes were violent and gave the illusion of each fish being larger than they were upon landing them. September brings a change in the season, but it is much more noticeable on the calendar than on the water. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

Not Your Pop’s Poppers!

Chattooga River

By Lee Hiers Unicoi Outfitters

As I write this, we’re in the middle of the Dog Days of summer, and a lot of the trout fishing has slowed down until fall, so I’ve been having fun fishing for bass and bream in the evenings using home-made poppers. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found poppers pretty intimidating: balsa wood, cork, lathes, airbrushes, etc., and I get cold sweats just thinking about spinning deer hair! But there has been a revolution in popper building. There are several pre-made popper bodies available on the market to ease the process of rolling your own by Wapsi, Rainy’s, and others. They come in a number of sizes and shapes, but are usually only available in white. While white is a great color for poppers, I do like to carry a variety of poppers when I go out. Which leads to my favorite pre-made poppers: The Surface Seducer Double Barrel Poppers from Flymen Fishing Company. First, they are a great shape that can be used either as a popper or as a slider, depending on how you insert the hook. They have molded-in eye sockets that allow for symmetrical eye placement (that can be a problem if you’re trying to freehand it). You can get them in six sizes ranging from small bream-size, to an extralarge that uses a 6/0 hook. And lastly, they come in six colors, so you don’t have to paint them if

2 ATLANTA

SEPT2018 ATL.indd 2

september 2018

you don’t want to. But, if you do, they can be easily decorated with Sharpie markers. Flymen really do make it easy. In addition to the popper bodies, they also sell appropriately-sized hooks and matching eyes for the poppers. And most local flyshops will have some of their range in stock. With just the Flymen products, some feathers and/ or bucktail, maybe some rubber legs, and your average trout-flytying setup, you can crank out a seemingly unlimited number of different patterns. And the great thing is, they catch fish! Of course, popper building can get as out of control as any other aspect of fly fishing (and I mean that in a good way!). The next step is an airbrush for more elaborate paint jobs and then it’s a short hop to turning your own custom shapes in foam, cork or balsa. The sky’s the limit! But I recommend starting simply, and this is a great time for that!

September finds the rivers here around Chattooga River Fly Shop in the best shape they have been in for many years. This summer was very kind to us in the rain department, as rivers, streams and creeks here are flowing beautifully down through the mountains and over the incredible waterfalls. Now that most of summer is behind us, the younger folks have all started school, and it seems we have the high summer heat behind us. It is time to look ahead to fall fishing. On a recent fishing trip on the East Fork of the Chattooga, we stopped in at the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery. While in a conversation with the great folks working at the hatchery, they shared about the great amounts of rain, cooler temperatures this summer, and the vast amount of trout ready to go in the rivers for this fall. If you have not ever visited the Walhalla Hatchery, it is well worth the visit to see how the whole process of raising trout happens. Higher water conditions throughout the summer has meant that the trout have had plenty of thermal refuge from any heat we have had. On numerous guided trips this late summer, we have been catching plenty of trout on a variety

of techniques. Still, as it is late summer, the early mornings and late in the day have produced the greatest amount of fish. During the middle of the day, fishing in the well shaded areas of the rivers and streams has also produced many fish in areas of water depths of two feet or more. As we look forward to the cooler temperatures of the fall season, we will start to see the emergence of the first of the “fall bugs”. The rocks in the rivers are loaded with very small dark nymphs as well. Try swinging the larger emerger imitations or a heavy nymph with a smaller nymph dropper through the riffle areas of the river and into the heads of the pools. As daytime temperatures heat up, the fish will move further into the depths of the rivers, so getting a bit deeper with a heavier front fly or a pinch of split shot will help greatly. Streamers are equally productive and will continue as well through the fall season. With the heat of the summer behind us, a good amount of water in the rivers, plus cooler temperatures arriving, the fall fishing here looks to be excellent for yet another fall season. There is still plenty of time to book a guided boat trip for bass and panfish with our guide Zach Hart on the mountain lakes. Stop in and allow us to help you with the flies and equipment you need for a great day on the rivers. We hope to see everyone out on the rivers.

Here in the South, the month of September is one of the most “in between” months there is for the fly fisher. Summertime is winding down and so is the sweet terrestrial fishing of the last eight or ten weeks. Old Mr. Rainbow will still eat a hopper or two, but the lower water levels and the fact he’s been whacked on the head a million times makes a bigun’ tougher to catch right now. September also is the start of hunting season, which will definitely make some of your fishing buddies to op for pursuit of the hairy kind instead of the fishy kind. But hey, losing a couple of these guys may be a plus! Labor Day weekend also is normally pretty much the end of the regular stocking of the hatchery supported streams until next spring. Lake turn-over of our tailwater fisheries usually will begin pretty soon and may knock out those fisheries for a month or so. Delayed harvest in Georgia doesn’t start until November, “don’t ask me why”, but North Carolina will start its DH program the first of October if I can wait that long. All that being said, good fly fishing can still be had up here in the mountains. If we’ve had regular rainfall and fairly cool morning temperatures here in the hills, our high elevation back country streams should be fishing nicely during this time.

Fuzzy high floating dry flies are about all that’s needed to entice these jewels. Just be sure to mash those barbs down for an easy release. A Yellow Stimulator, Tan Elk Hair Caddis, and a Wulff or two all in size 14 or 16, will seal the deal. I try to hold out as long as I can before using nymphs for the next six months, but if you must, drop a size 18 Pheasant Tail off the tail of your dry on some 6x fluorocarbon and have at it! If you’re looking to catch a big trout or two in September, you can’t beat Noontootla Creek Farms for their two miles of some of the most amazing fly fishing only, catch and release trout water in the East. Noontootla Creek pretty much flows right off the Blue Ridge Wildlife Management Area into the valley and contains some monster browns and rainbows. If you see a Facebook or Instagram post of a big beautiful trout from the Blue Ridge area, this is probably where it came from. The water normally remains cold enough to fish even in summertime. Ninety percent of these trout live here year round and are not stockers, but big beautiful wild fish. The fish aren’t easy, but if you’re up for a challenge, you won’t find a better place to wet a fly. Check out their website at www.ncfga.net and give them a call to book a trip.

September Fly Fishing Report September in North Georgia is one of those transitional months where some years we might start to see a little topwater activity shaping up by the latter part of the month and other years we see nothing really happening until the temperatures cool down. What you positively can count on about September is that we are closer to October (which is the true start of striper season). September is the one month where you hope to start to see the changes in the season taking place on all our area lakes. As a North Georgia fly angler, you have a few options to keep an eye out for when fishing our area lakes and rivers. Fishing for carp has anglers getting in their last licks of the season. If the night time temperatures start to cool slightly, the carp will again take one more look at the flats for a meal before heading back into the river itself to find some food. Not only are the carp anglers getting in their last licks, but so too are the river rats who search for stripers in the shallows before they make their journey south to get back to the lakes they call home for the next nine months. The Lanier stripers that have spent most of their summer in and around Helen are making their way back down toward the big lake. Same holds true for the West Point stripers that resided in and around Sandy Springs and Buckhead. For river fisherman, the best news of all is that September does not have as much pressure on the river fish as July and August does. Less pressure on a river usually means better fishing! September can certainly be considered as the transition month. It is also the time of the season when hybrids may begin their topwater ritual on Lake Allatoona, Lake Oconee and Lake Hartwell. While most of our impoundments throughout North Georgia will see cooler nighttime temperatures, those impoundments further south may have to wait until October for the changes to begin. Those lakes that will see changes occur will begin to notice cooler lake surface 4 ATLANTA

SEPT2018 ATL.indd 4

september 2018

water temperatures down into the low 80’s, and with any luck, by the end of the month maybe even the upper 70’s. Combine lower surface water temperatures with the lakes where the Corp of Engineers start to pull down water and you have the perfect environment for hybrids to start hitting the surface. This can lead to some fast and exciting topwater action. The fish are feeding on threadfin shad that range in the 1” to 3” size. It is a perfect opportunity for fly anglers to get in some great fishing. You can expect that from first light until 9am and then again from 5pm until dark will see the most action. Combine that with a new or full moon phase and there is a good chance you will see surface feeding hybrids. Even conventional anglers can get in on this great fishery. Just have a medium to medium light tackle outfit rigged with 10-pound test and a casting bubble along with a small fly and you will be set. Fly anglers should arm themselves with a 6-8 weight fly rod, intermediate fly line and a few small flies to be in the game. Best flies are small Clousers, Albie Anchovies and Somethin’ Else patterns. Lakes like Hartwell, Clark Hill, Carters, West Point and Allatoona (yes the deadsea!) will see this topwater action. Lake Lanier, while not a hybrid lake will see similar action with spotted bass schooling in September. With any luck you might even see small stripers in the 2 to 5-pound class hitting the surface by the end of the month. Use the same tactics that applies for hybrids and you too can get in on this action. What this means for Lanier striper anglers is that you need to keep an eye out for surface feeding fish all over the south end of the lake. From Browns Bridge south to Buford Dam and everywhere inbetween is the area you might find surface feeding stripers. I would key in on the area around Three Sisters as a good starting point. Afternoons will be the time to look for these surface feeders (especially if they are pulling water from Buford Dam). You can call Buford Dam before you

decide to go and see when they will actually start pulling water. Once we get toward the end of September, some folks will pull out their medium heavy tackle and start fishing at night for striped bass using Bomber Long A lures. While it might be just a tad early for this next pattern to heat up, you just never know when Lanier stripers will decide that fall is upon us. One thing I love about September is it also means our

beloved Georgia Bull Dawgs will begin their new season and BEAT ALABAMA THIS YEAR! I fully expect an 11 or 12 win season for Kirby and the boys. By the time UGA is 9-0 it won’t be long before the terns and gulls are back on the pond helping us locate the striped demons. That is why I truly love September! We are simply getting closer to kick off on the pond. GOOOOOO DAWGS, SICK’EM and hope to see you on the pond!

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing Looking Toward the Fall Contributed by James Bradley Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide www.ReelEmInGuideService.com (706) 273-0764 Normal September and early fall conditions with low water means stealth! You simply cannot catch a trout that you have spooked, and it has fled a hundred feet in the opposite direction. Low water conditions also require some tactics that many anglers simply choose not to do. Here’s the short list: observation, learning to use obstacles and cover and finding a trout’s new holding area during low water. Stealth is the way to go for catching. Clumsiness, stumbling, stepping on a limb that breaks underwater or even up on the bank prior to entering the stream, wading too fast, talking too loud, allowing studded boots to slip causing the grinding effect or allowing rod guides to reflect sunlight off them during a cast, these all decrease your opportunities for hookups as trout have superior senses like eyesight, inner ear for hearing and

even a lateral line for vibration sensing. Observation is a key component to know what is going on and where the trout are. Observe the stream from a high bank by staying low to the ground or from behind an obstacle like a tree to hide your presence. Take five minutes and watch everything that comes alive. You can learn more about trout and insect behavior in five minutes than you can fishing for ten hours. Have a good set of polarized sunglasses as they are essential to locating fish underwater. I use amber lenses, but this color is not for everyone. It is easy to see a trout rise to a fly, but many will miss a trout sipping a fly. You will have to train your eyes to see the flicker of a tail or to see a shadow of a trout. Trout turn sideways when feeding on nymphs off the bottom. This is a flash you may see. Be observant!

Use obstacles and cover for your benefit. I see anglers that will climb up onto a large rock to cast from. This angler has spooked everything around that vicinity. Stay down and behind the rock to make your cast from. Most of our mountain streams decline quickly leaving the higher white water to our front as we move upstream. Use the higher elevation of the stream for your benefit by making your approach to your casting spot as low as possible. Do not blow your opportunity by walking upright to the casting spot! Use that large log out in the stream as cover to cast from. These little things will make for more hookups. The trout you caught back in the spring will probably not be in the same riffle or run. As water conditions change, a trout’s lie will also change. When low water appears, feeding lanes change. Learn to read the water and have a basic understanding of trout’s needs. After learning to read the water, you will know where the trout’s lies are. Target that spot and possibly hook up with a trout of a lifetime! Want to play with the big boys? We’ve been hammering those big wild trout at Noontootla Creek Farms. For the best guides on this water simply give us a call and we’ll

hook you up! Reel ‘Em In Guide Service is the only Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide in North Georgia’s Historic High Country region. They have been offering their services to fly anglers since 2001. Local Rivers & Fly Fishing What Aspect of Fly Casting Interests You

Contributed By: Rene J. Hesse Certified Casting InstructorFederation of Fly Fishers & Atlanta Fly Fishing and Camping Meetup Organizer

A few weeks ago while giving a fly casting seminar to eight Boy Scouts, we discussed the different aspects of fly fishing. Facets such as the sport, art, hobby and science were explained. I was shocked by what a few of the kids remembered at the end of the two hour class. One thing really impressed me. To start with, as you know, every kid is different. They all were looking to get their merit badge, but their background, physical ability, attention span and drive were all different. As we spoke, I figured we need to have fun with this. They need to remember that it was fun, not something they had to do. Make it something they want to do again. The kids were old enough to understand dry humor and sarcasm as well as tease back, so we did. When we spoke of the science aspect of fly casting, I could see the light go on with a few of the guys. For fun, I explained that kinetic energy played a huge part in casting, and the formula is: KE = 0.5 x mv2. But who cares, we are fishing! We went on and talked about balanced outfits, flies, and then went down to the lake to do some casting. After a quick demo on how casting works, we started by stripping line off the reel and sweep-

6 ATLANTA

ing the rod tip back and forth until there was enough line out of the rod tip to sweep into a roll cast. After that, we went into the basic overhead cast. Using the visual aid of lifting the rod until the fly line was coming out of the water and then snatching the line off the water until the fly was out of the water seemed to produce the best results. When I could see some of them starting to lose interest in casting, we move on to rock skipping. That got them fired up again, and the casting lesson then continued. By the end of the class, most of them were making a decent 30 foot cast. We talked about a lot of things in that two hour workshop. At times, I wondered if some of them were listening. But at the end of the day, we were talking about things that were interesting about fly fishing, and two of the guys rattled off the formula for kinetic energy that I had said in passing earlier. Can you believe that? It just proved to me that people enjoy different aspects of fly fishing, and who is to say what a kid is going to gravitate to in life. I have another grandson on the way. I hope we can explore all the different things fishing and life have to offer and see what he gravitates to.

Inspiring Our Future Fly Fishers I have learned during my 24 years of guiding on the Chattahoochee that you should never force a child to fish. I had a child one time who really had no interest in fishing. This kid loved sports, especially golf. I immediately told him there were tons of golf balls in the river along the many sand bars. His dad looked at me like I was crazy, but I told the boy if he did not mind wet wading, he could search for golf balls with my fish net. The boy collected golf balls from the streambed while his dad and I fished within sight of him. After about two hours, the boy was wet and cold and decided to try a bit of fishing in the warmth of the drift boat with some great success. I think trying to be creative and to ease a child into the fishing or hunting experience is the key. Keep it short in small doses, starting with a half day ration. Set them up for success by simply monitoring the river/weather conditions.

Avoid harsh air temperatures. Too hot or cold will ruin the experience. My general rule on attention span is basically that their age is the number of minutes you have to get either a bite or a fish on the line. If you don’t get a bite or fish in that length of time, change which side of the boat they are fishing or maybe change flies or give them a snack and then get back after it. My personal “ahah moment” was fly tying. Kids naturally love arts and crafts and often have a keen interest in building something out of natural materials with fur and feathers. Personally, I got more into fly tying in the beginning and later discovered the reward of catching one on my own creation. That pushed me over the edge, and as they say, I was “hooked”! My eight-year-old twins have been trout fishing since they were three years old and have yet to catch one on the fly rod, but they suddenly love to tie flies.

Dog Days and Spoons Will Give Way

By Capt. Wayne Moore USCG www.oconeeonthefly.com We are all looking forward to the end of the “dog days” here on Oconee and anxiously awaiting September. Last year, we had less rain and essentially a topwater bite for hybrids and stripers at the dam all summer. This is because Georgia Power was pumping water up from Lake Sinclair frequently in the morning. This year, it has not been the case, and it’s been tough. The last great topwater bite in a trip I had was mid-June. That will likely change in September with less rain and slightly cooler temperatures. When that pump-back/topwater is on, it’s incredible! Even a novice fly fisherman can catch these fierce fighting fish. For the spin fisherman, popping corks and 1/6-ounce white rooster tails do very well. On light spinning tackle, it’s a rush! Hybrids – As of this writing, even though Georgia Power has not been pumping water, the spoon bite in the morning has been good. There are a lot of great guides here on Oconee, each has their own specialties. When I think about spoon fishing, the experts that come to my mind are Doug Nelms and Jason Nelms. They both have taught me that silver is not the only color spoon to use! Go to Sugar Creek Marina and ask about which spoons are hot right now, and they will hook you up. Fly fishing right now for hybrids is a no go. The fish are holding at 25 to 30 feet deep. As mentioned, this will change in

September. As for other techniques, I am leaving the bait behind for now. I have caught some nice stripers on the U-rig. Look for humps near the dam and I run 2.8 mph 100 feet back. Crappie – Long line, long line, long line. The key here is to find submerged timber mid-lake. You will see crappie on your electronics. What you are looking for is timber in 20 to 30 feet of water that seems to top out about 10 to 12 feet from the surface. If you troll a double 1/16 jig, you will be close to that timber. You will get hung up, but you will catch fish. Use light wire hooks and you can just pull the hook off the tree and straighten it back out: http:// www.litewirehooks.com/ . You can get these at Sugar Creek and Fish Tale Marinas. Largemouth Bass – Fly fishing for largemouths slowed down as the water heated up and the pump back was off. If they are pumping, the largemouth will be closer to the shore and easy to catch on a fly. In September, this will be a great way to land your first largemouth on a fly. I always use either a Wiggle Minnow fly, Henry Cowen’s Something Else or combine the two by using the Something Else as a dropper. Final words – I love the fall, and fishing on Oconee will be great, especially for the fly fisherman. Last year, this bite was great in September and October. By November, we will be chasing the birds as a giveaway for where the schools of fish are. We are booking up September and October quickly, so call 706-816-4281 or e-mail me at wmoore1700 @outlook.com and request your dates. Water temperature: 88-93 degrees, water level: full pool, clarity: stained/ clear. The bite will continue to get better as the temps start to get cooler. The topwater bite is by far the most productive. The mid-day bite is hit or miss as the fish are scattered most days. Covering as much water early is the best option to catch fish or fill a limit. The quality fish will be caught early, with an occasional bonus fish later in the day on plastics. C-rigs, shaky heads and Texas rigs are the best baits for the remainder of the day. If the wind puts a chop on the water and the sun is out, you can catch a few on a jerk bait. As fall nears, the shade will continue and the bass will be close by. Backs of creeks will start to produce fish. Just keep your head down and grind it

September is a great month to get out and either visit some of your favorite wild trout water or explore new opportunities. Summer temps are beginning to drop, many of the summer crowds have ventured back home and it’s tough to find many wild trout that will refuse a Parachute Adams. This pattern in an easy tie, and no wild trout angler should head out without having a few of them in the box.

Lanier Stripers

Forecast By: Steve Scott http://TeamLanier.wordpress.com/menu August water temps climbed to just under 90°, and I believe September will be about the same. The downline, lead core and the umbrella rig bite will be the predominant method for catching stripers. Be sure you know where you are at all times as you target these summer stripers, meaning if you are downlining, stay deeper than 50’ in the clearings next to trees. I am using 8” of 10-pound fluorocarbon leader. Early in the morning, downline one-third back from creek mouths at 48’ or greater. In the afternoon, downline the river channel near the mouth of the creeks 70’ deep or greater. Looking for that subtle difference in the surface water temp could make the difference in getting a bite. If using lead core, slow down your speed to 2 mph and use a 3-ounce bucktail jig 8 to 9 colors out which will range between 40’ and 44’ deep. Keep your umbrella rigs out at least 100’ at 3 mph, but change your ¾-ounce jigs to 2-ounce for the deeper water stripers. Areas to target are south of Browns Bridge to include Shoal Creek from the humps in front of East Bank to SC8, the mouth of Bald Ridge Creek, in Young Deer Creek from the community dock to the humps in front of Tidwell ramp and around the south side of the island at LM18. Lead core in the morning 8-9 colors with white on white over the 30”

main lake points at the mouths of creeks, then 6-7 colors at LM18 at the crossroads, power reeling over 30’ to 50’ humps. An 18” leader with at least 20-pound mono or braid should be used with a 2-ounce bucktail jig tipped with an 8” to 10” chartreuse paddle tail or a Ben Parker spoon. Weighted directional bobbers should also be used when downlining to spread out the drops using a variety of depths. Stage your downrods in the rod holders with the desired depth attained by pulling out enough line, then use the bait net to hold and hook the bait, then release the bail so that the bait plummets downward immediately with the help of the 2-ounce pencil weight. Put a 3-ounce 9 arm umbrella rig with 2-ounce jigs out 100’ with White Trash paddle tails moving at a slower speed to make sure the rigs are getting down. TIP of the Month: Do a quick in and out to check bait water temp using an infrared thermometer. This eliminates the time the tank lid is open without having to reach in to grab a floating thermometer. Steve Scott TeamLanier.com, 404-27-3481.

Lake Oconee

Lake Oconee is full with the water temperature in the 80’s. Bass fishing is slow. Go at first light and use a Strike King white and chartreuse buzzbait on the rip rap. If Georgia Power is pulling water, then stay with it and back up your buzzbait with a #7 Shad Rap in the baby bass pattern. Make sure the bait is in contact with the bottom. Bounce it

off of the rocks. As the sun comes up, move to the deep docks and pitch a jig as far back under the dock as you can. Work the jig out slowly. You can also pick up some fish off of the deep humps down near the dam. Use your Lowrance to find the humps with a lot of structure on them. Use a Carolina rig with at least a 1/2 ounce weight and a long leader with a dark red or red black Culprit worm. Work the worm down the hump to deeper water and fish the heavy brush. Work the worm slowly into deeper water.

Local Lakes & Forecasts SEMINOLE

Forecast By: by Paul Tyre paultyrefishing@yahoo.com Water temperature: 88 degrees, lake level: 8” below full pool, clarity: stained and clearing. The bass fishing on Lake Seminole has been incredible this summer. The topwater bite has been amazing. Three baits have been very productive; a frog, a buzzbait and a walking bait. A KVD Sexy Frog and a KVD Poppin’ Perch have worked well over the top and through the holes of the topped-out hydrilla. It takes the right equipment to properly cast a frog. To get the big bass out of the thick grass, braided line is a must. You’ll need at least 50-pound line. I prefer 65-pound line on a heavy action rod at least 7 feet long to wrestle the bass out of the grass. A high speed reel, at least 7.1.1, helps too. The buzzbaits have been getting some aggressive strikes along the edges of the grass lines on the main lake. I prefer a Strike King Tour Grade buzzbait in white and chartreuse.

and I replace the back treble hook with a feathered treble hook. I have had quite a few guide trips with several big bass being caught. One husband and wife team, Chase and Brittany Crowe, who came up from middle Florida, caught several big bass while out on Lake Seminole using the techniques I described. They were happy with their catches and promised to come back again for another trip soon. The bream and the shellcracker are

still bedding strong on the lake. They’re being taken on red wigglers around mayfly hatches, which are still hatching. The mayfly hatch has been really productive this summer, resulting in a lot of fish being caught and coming across the docks at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge. For current information and/ or to schedule guided bass, bream or shellcracker trips, contact me at (850)264-7534 or paultyrefishing@ yahoo.com.

Lake SINCLAIR

When fishing a buzzbait on Lake Seminole, you’ll want to use at least 50-pound braided line to get a good hook set. A 7’ medium heavy rod is a great tool for this. A Strike King KVD Sexy Dawg has been seeing some great action this summer too. This bait has a unique sound that drives the big bass crazy. I like to throw this bait on a 7’ medium action rod with 30-pound braided line,

Bass fishing is fair. The bass are shallow early. Most of the fish have moved to deeper water for the summer. Most fish are now being caught on the creek and river channel ledges 6 to 10 feet deep on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, pig and jigs and Carolina rigged plastics. Submerged road beds and deeper main lake points are also

producing some good bass. Crappie fishing is fair. The fish are holding on brush, stumps and manmade cover in the flats in 8 to 12 feet of water. There are very few fish shallow. The river and creek channel ledges are not producing many fish. A lot of crappie have moved to the ledges. Spider rigging with live minnows is the way to catch these summer time crappie. Shooting docks with a 1/24 ounce Jiffy Jig is still producing some fish. Crappie are still being caught around the docks, and the night fishing is really good also.

Bass: Fair - As the days start to get a little shorter and the temps cool just a little, expect a slow improvement in the fishing. Largemouth are still being caught on deeper brush piles, ledges and road beds, basically holding to a summer pattern. Try big deep diving crankbaits or Texas rigged Ol Monster worms. Best fishing is around brush piles in these areas if you can find them. Water generation always improves this bite. Downsize baits in these same areas and improve your chances for spotted bass. With the unusually high water from this summer’s rains, some fish choose to remain shallow, and this pattern should only improve as the water cools. Topwater baits such as Whopper Ploppers, Zara Spooks and Spro Poppin frogs can still be effective

for shallow fish, especially around grass and weed beds. Try targeting areas north of the 219 bridge in the Chattahoochee. Also, have a jig handy to pitch into wood cover in these same areas. Slower than normal, but still fairly consistent, spotted bass are still your best bet. Spots are being caught by casting Spot Remover heads loaded with shaky tail worms or just fishing a drop shot Zoom finesse worm or mini lizard around deep structure or bait. Also try a small Texas rigged worm or a pign-jig around blow down trees. Try fishing around the bridges and bridge pilings with small crankbaits, and shaky head rigs, especially during periods of water generation. Linesides: Fair - Hybrids and stripes are still down lake and will occasionally decide to hit on a lure. There was a really big shad hatch this year making the fishing tougher than normal all this summer. It’s just too easy for them to get the real thing! Expect the down-line

bite on live bait to continue to be at least OK as we move toward early fall. A few fish are surface schooling (very inconsistently) on the main lake and can be caught on Roostertails, topwaters, popn-cork rigs and Storm Swim Shad lures. Trolling with crankbaits is also fairly effective. Try old faithful, the Railroad Trestle Hump and the humps out from Amity Park for decent results. Crappie: Fair - The fish will typically move out and hold on deeper brush and structure or under docks. Try drop-shotting minnows or shooting docks near deep water for the best results. Some fish will start to move a little shallower as the water slowly cools. Minnows fished under a float will usually work on them when you find them. Night fishing is still

September 22nd Harvest Moon

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

SEPT2018 ATL.indd 13

pretty good. Try under the bridges with lights. Catfish: Good - Lots of channel cat are being caught by the few anglers that target them. Live and cut baits (and worms of course) fished on bottom will catch cats all over the lake, as long as fairly deep water is nearby. Jug fishing is also fun and productive. To target flatheads, go to a larger bait like a 4-5 inch bream or large shiner and fish the same areas. Be sure to increase the size of your rigs as fish in the 20 to 30-pound range are fairly common. Now is the time to book your fall striper trips to insure you get a good day! Peak fall fishing is from October 15th - December 15th. For more info on booking a trip, go to my website LakeWestPointFishing. com - THANKS!

Catching Monster Bass by Billy Darby

Do you want to catch a monster bass? If so, stop fishing for numbers or limits or a full sack. You must dedicate a few trips for just one trophy. Think big, use big lures and heavier tackle. Vacate the areas where noted stringers of three pounders are consistent or tournaments are won. Even if a school of nice fish appear, restrain from using the same old common tactics of 1215’ medium sized crankbaits, and if the water depth will allow, cast a super deep diving lure well past the school, crank down to maximum depth, then slow your retrieve to a minimal speed. Monsters very seldom school, but they do take advantage of the smaller fish supplying the meal with injured prey or residue falling beneath the feeding frenzy. On the same note, I have had very good success by casting past schooling hybrids and stripers with big football jigs trailed with 5” Big Bite Fighting Frogs or heavy Carolina rigs with a super large Big Bite 10”

Kreit Tail Worms crawled beneath the surface activity. The plastics prevent the unwanted bite, as hybrids seldom hit slow crawled plastics. Relating to the seasons of course, keep in mind that the super girls hang out in shallow water during the spawn and pre-spawn cruising stage, but even then, stick with very large lures to prevent smaller fish from interrupting your quest. Any other time of year, depend on old brush piles or natural timber that is rarely visited by other anglers. Study your Lake Master maps for sharp ledges and search for target areas that look like a giant could be inhabiting a comfort zone or calling a specific spot home for many years. Confidence is the name of the game. Learn to fish slower than ever before, sometimes waiting even minutes before lure movement. I had been vertical jigging in the same 10’x10’ area trying to maneuver my spoon as snug to the inner ledge as possible for about 15 minutes before a very gentle but recognizable tug foretold her demise. Trash Fish By Capt. Cefus McRae Nuts & Bolts Fishing Series

On a recent fishing trip, the first three casts of the morning produced three fish. That’s pretty outstanding. Three pitches, three fish. Under normal circumstances I would be gleeful, and possibly even do a little bragging, but those three fish were all gafftop sailcats, and it just so happened that I wasn’t fishing for saltwater catfish. Instead, I was targeting speckled trout. But for the first couple hours that morning, all I seemed to be able to catch were what many people call Trash Fish; sailcats, ladyfish, lizardfish, stingrays, toadfish and a sea robin. I think I caught every one of them. Now, I don’t know exactly who came up with the moniker “Trash Fish” for these species. Probably someone who didn’t appreciate the tarpon-like jumps of a ladyfish or the drag-screaming runs of a big sailcat or stingray or the uniquely interesting leg-like pectoral fins of a sea robin. Actually, I’d put a couple of those in the “Most-valuable” category. A lizardfish is probably one of the best baits you can use to catch monster gag grouper. Lady-

Local Lakes & Forecasts fish are a preferred bait for catching tarpon, spinner sharks, and bull redfish. There are some Trash Fish that inhabit the freshwater environs as well. Ever caught an alligator gar? Most folks put them in the Trash category. I don’t. They fight like crazy. They jump, and they look really dangerous when you get them close to the boat. Hundreds of very sharp teeth on that long snout that will mess up your day. A lot of people consider carp to be a Trash Fish. But if you ever plan to fly fish for bonefish or redfish, carp are one of the best sparring partners you’ll ever find. Carp will cruise the flats of our inland rivers and reservoirs and will do just about everything bones and reds will do. It’s a great way to practice your casting prowess, stealth and retrieves. Plus, when you get a carp to take your fly, it’s a fight like you’ve never seen before. Trash? I don’t think so. If there’s one fish that probably deserves the status of Trash Fish would be the toadfish, not especial-

ly pretty to look at. Their jaws and small teeth can do some real damage to your fingers. They don’t put up much of a fight, and they’re not terribly good on the table. At least that’s what I’ve heard. I can’t honestly remember ever being served toadfish, or being hungry enough to try to cook one that I’ve caught. By the way, they also call the toadfish a “Mother-In-Law Fish”. Someone must have been really mad at their mom-in-law to brand the toadfish

with that name. Now that I’ve reflected on the subject, I am considering removing several of the aforementioned species from my own personal Trash Fish list. For me, any fish that puts up a great fight, offers some aerial acrobatics or drag-screaming runs deserves its rightful place as a sport fish. But I think the toadfish will always remain a little bit on the trashy side Tight lines and calm seas.

If you’re sick of the rain, then join the crowd. However, remembering back two September’s ago, we were praying for rain. Our North Georgia lakes are busting at the seams with water, but enough with the rain talk, let’s talk striper fishing. This is a perfect time of year to catch tons of schooling fish in the Georgia mountains, and there’s no better way to do that than by booking a trip with Blairsville, GA’s #1 striper guide: Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. Currently, Lake Nottely is still at full pool. Water clarity is clear and slightly stained in the backs of creeks, and water temps are in the mid 80’s. Striper fishing has remained about the same lately. We’ve been catching a ton of smaller schoolies in shallower water and some larger stripers in deeper water over the channels. The early morning and late afternoon bites are your best times to see some action. Target creek mouths and points off the main lake channel. The majority of our fish have been caught from Point 7 to the dam. Downlining live blueback herring over a 30 to

70 foot bottom has been the best technique. We have seen a pretty bad thermocline, so keep an eye on your baits. Below 30 feet and they’re toast. The fish will continue to school up through the next month or so and will stay over deeper water. Just remember to keep an eye on your electronics and watch for schools of stripers when cruising the lake. Also, remember to try to get the fish back into the water as quickly as possible after they are caught. September is a fantastic month for catching a lot of stripers and bass on this North Georgia lake. Give Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service a call and let the area’s #1 rated guide service put you on some of Lake Nottely’s best trophy stripers during the fishing trip of a lifetime. Local Lakes & Forecasts Lake Lanier in September-Make the Right Choice Contributed By: Jim “Jimbo” Mathley www.jimboonlanier.com A traditional September on Lake Lanier offers anglers many choices of approach. This September on Lake Lanier should be no different. The lake has been above full pool all summer, and we should go into September about 1 foot above full pool. The water temperatures have been normal for late summer, so the traditional late summer patterns should be in play. Often during these kind of conditions, you can find fish very deep as well as very shallow, and some in between. Today we will look at the options for fishing Lanier this September and how to approach catching bass in this key transitional month. Location: Understand that the primary concern of both game fish and baitfish are oxygen and food source, in that order. During a normal September, the “comfort zone” of both the baitfish and spotted bass become multi-faceted. In September, we often find spotted bass in 3 different types of locations: 1) Very deep (30-50 ft) off the ends of humps and points, relating to timber lines. 2) Very shallow in the backs of creeks and creek arms in major tributaries around the lake or shallow on rocky bluff walls. 3) Suspended in the mouths of major creeks around brush in 20-30 feet of water, as well as deeper pockets near the main lake. Now that we understand where we can find them, let’s look at some of the tools we can use to catch them in each of the above situations. Lures and Presentation: Deep 1. Drop-Shot – This is a great tool to target deep fish. This presentation can be made vertically into cover or it can be cast toward the target and slowly retrieved. I prefer the Lanier Baits Fruity drop shot worms. Light line is a must. I prefer 6-8 pound test at the most. Light line helps provide a more natural presentation and will garner more strikes. 2. Jigging Spoon/Flutter Spoon – Always a great option when the fish are deep. In general, I prefer the Flexit spoons, but choose your favorite in this category. A flutter spoon can be a great option this time of year as well. Experiment with the presentation once you have located the fish. Some 22 ATLANTA

SEPT2018 ATL.indd 22

september 2018

sort of rip/pause or fast reel/pause cadence should do the trick. Their mood and the presentation required to catch them will vary daily with conditions. Look around timber lines and tree tops near the mouths of creeks. Lures and Presentation: Shallow 1. Buzzbait – While Lanier is not necessarily known as a buzzbait lake, this can be a very effective tool in both shallow situations discussed above. Make your retrieve an erratic one and present around cover where possible in addition to steep rocky banks early in the morning. I like the Picasso choices for a buzzbait. 2. Spinnerbait- An old favorite that can be deadly around flooded shoreline cover and also by shallow docks and blow down trees, as well as steeper rocky banks. 3. Crankbait - Opt for a shallow to medium diving plug and work the same areas as you would the spinnerbait. I am a big fan of the SPRO offerings. 4. Jig/Worm - When the fish are not chasing, don’t be afraid to pitch worms and jigs to the flooded shoreline cover. This can be a very effective technique to catch fish with a smaller strike zone. Chattahoochee Jigs rule! Lures and Presentation: Suspended 1. Topwater – When the water starts to cool, the topwater action can be awesome. Look around man-made brush on off-shore structure such as humps and points for the fish that are hanging out. Topwater baits such as a Chug Bug and a Zara Spook can be an excellent way to catch these fish and a lot of fun too! 2. SuperSpin by SuperFish Baits – This is an excellent producer on Lanier. Fish the bait at the depth you see the fish suspending near bait balls. Understand the fall-rate for your rig and count the bait down to the depth of the fish and maintain that depth. 3. Jerk Bait – Another great tool for targeting suspending fish. Choose a bait that suspends at the depth the fish are holding and experiment with your retrieve cadence until you zero in on what the fish are looking for any given day. The SPRO McStick or

McRip are great options here. 4. Spy Bait – This bait has become popular in the recent years. It is a great option when the fish are not hitting your topwater or jerkbait presentations. Cast this bait out, count it down to 10 or so, and then begin a very slow retrieve. This technique is the epitome of finesse fishing. Slow and methodical is the key. I like the Duo Realis offerings in

the G-fix 80 size. I still have some dates available in September, so call me to enjoy some great September fishing. See you on the water! Local Lakes & Forecasts

Fishing Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair By Kim Lin, Logan Real Estate As with the best area places to eat, you need to get in good with the locals to find out where the local fishing hotspots are. We spoke to Mark Smith with reeltimeguideservice.com, and got his take on fishing Lake Oconee through the seasons. Spring- Late spring is a great time to be on the water. The weather is warming up and the fish are hungry and getting ready for their spawning run. April is probably the best month for catching the trophy fish as they move into shallow water looking for food. Do not overlook March and May as they can be just as good as April. Summer- June can be one of the best months for striper fishing on Oconee. As we move into summer the crappie fishing will just get better and better, and there will be

large numbers of great tasting fish. So far this summer, crappie and striper fishing are reported to be excellent and expected to be great throughout the summer and getting on the water early will have your fish box loaded up before 10 am. Fish for crappie and striper when Georgia Power is moving water, if you can. Alternatively, try for crappie by night fishing off a dock or under a bridge. If you’re using minnows, adding a little ice to the water will keep it cool and extend the life of your bait. Fall- When the fall colors are out, the fishing is great. Big schools of striper and hybrids travel the lake looking for food. The crappie will be stacked up in the timber, and they will be feeding on small minnows. It is a great time to enjoy the low humidity and good fishing.

Winter- This is the time of year when I look to the skies for direction. Why look to the skies when the fish are in the water? Look for the sea gulls. The sea gulls will indicate where the bait is and where the stripers are. If you are willing to put on your heavy coat and gloves, the fishing is great under the birds. Fishing with a boat is preferable on Lakes Oconee and Sinclair, but if your situation is such that you’re land-bound, you still have options. Lake Oconee has several Georgia Power boat ramps and parks where it’s permitted to fish along the bank. These are located in the

areas of Double Branches, Lawrence Shoals, Long Shoals, Old Salem, Parks Ferry, Sugar Creek and Swords. Lake Sinclair allows fishing from the piers located below both the Wallace Dam and the Sinclair Dam. Also at Sinclair, there is a fishing overlook above the tailrace area directly below the dam. It is reported that the fishing is excellent in these areas and boasts a number of species. No one knows the Georgia’s Lake Country like Kim and Lin Logan Real Estate. Local Lakes & Forecasts Fishing Resume…. What is That? Contributed By: Jay Striker www.jaystriker.com Last month I talked about sponsorship, and this month we go a little deeper in tools needed to showcase you as an angler. One of those tools is having a fishing resume. I have found that each one of the fishing resumes that I have seen all looked different and contained different things. This is expected as all anglers will have varying backgrounds. What is a fishing resume? A fishing resume is a written summary of your fishing career that allows one to look at it in a quick fashion and determine several things like; who you are; what you have done; when you did it; and where it was done. Most impor-

tantly, it shows what you can do for your potential sponsors. Understand that a fishing resume is not like a normal resume that you would use as if you are applying for an everyday job, however, it is like applying for a job but in the outdoor industry. So your focus is on all of the strengths that you have acquired being in the outdoors. Often I get asked to assist other anglers in putting together a fishing resume, but I caution them that they need to have some experience in order to have an effective resume to show you in the best light. When creating a fishing resume, understand

“What is a fishing resume? A fishing resume is a written summary of your fishing career that allows one to look at it in a quick fashion and determine several things like; who you are; what you have done;....”

that you are presenting a snapshot of your past and not a book about you. Most potential sponsors have seen enough of them and will stop reading after the first page. Make it no longer that 1-1/2 pages. I recommend these seven items to have in your fishing resume: 1. Picture: A picture of you will give your sponsor a quick memory of who they were talking to when you follow up later on. 2. Contact information: Just like traditional resumes, who you are and where you’re from and number with email. 3. Objectives: This is where you make a brief statement that provides the reader with what you plan to do and how you plan to do it. Keep this to one paragraph. Short and sweet. 4. Education: Knowing that you have taken the time to study shows that you have a certain discipline about you. When people tell you education doesn’t matter, it just simply not true. Trust me on this one. 5. Fishing Background: I recommend putting only the last three years of events and trails you have fished, because it shows you have been active in the industry. 6. Industry Outreach: Having a

strong industry outreach activity on the fishing resume is a good thing. It means you are using your skills to benefit others, such as supporting benefit tournaments or organizations such as Wounded Warriors Project and doing boat shows and expos. 7. Current Sponsors and Goals: Showing that you already have some sponsorships helps, and this is where you want to list all that you have and understand that they will call on them to see how you are doing. If you don’t have any sponsors, then make sure to show your passion in helping the sponsor meet their goals moving forward. Having a fishing resume is a must when trying to develop yourself in the fishing industry. It gives potential sponsors a quick glance at you and make a determination if you can be an asset. You only have one chance to make a first impression, so make it count. I recommend using professional resume paper that has been printed at the print store, because it sends the message that you took the time to care and that speaks volumes. Please take the time to like my New FB page; On Deck with Jay Striker. See you on the water!

Local Lakes & Forecasts lake HARDING

By Steve McCorkle “Colonel” Stevemccorkle61@yahoo.com September welcomes the beginning of SEC Football and other sports like dove season and bow season. School has also started back so the traffic on the lake will begin to decrease. This can be good for the fishing as there will not be as much fishing pressure and not as much boat and jet ski traffic. The lake should remain at full pool during September as this year is not a year for drawdown. I also expect the water to remain clear and still have plenty of shoreline vegetation. During September the best patterns for bass on the main lake are to concentrate around the docks with structure fishing a Texas rig worm, swimbait, trick worm, topwater bait, or spinnerbait. Early in the morning or late in the evening, targeting grass beds or other vegetation with a trick worm, buzzbait, or topwater can also produce. If the docks do not produce for you, then back off to the ledges and points

with a Carolina rig worm or crankbait. Up the river, fish the blow downs along the deeper banks with a Texas rig worm, jig and pig, trick worm or swimbait. In the early morning and late evening, fish the grass beds in the small pockets or shallow points of the river with a trick worm or buzzbait. If you decide to chance going all the way to the shoals at the north end of the lake, then fish a Texas rig worm or a swimbait around the rocks in the deeper pockets to catch the shoal bass. Just remember that you cannot keep the shoal bass and must release them. This area is really better to fish from a smaller boat such as a kayak or canoe as the rocks can really damage the hull of a fiberglass boat. Nighttime is also a great time to fish for bass. At night, bass can be caught fishing the lights on docks, especially the submerged lights. Best baits for nighttime are Texas-rig worms, trick worms, swimbaits and rubber shad baits. Striped bass and hybrids can be caught on the main lake around rocky points and deep water or at night around lighted docks or upriver

around the rocky points or up at the shoals. The best baits are jerk baits, rubber minnow baits, swimbaits, spinners such as Red Fish Magic or live shad or minnows. The crappie are still biting under the bridges and around docks with deep water at night as long as the dock has good lighting to attract baitfish and the crappie. Crappie are also biting early in the morning and late in the evening around submerged structure. The best baits are minnows during this time of year. Bream, shellcracker and other sunfish are biting well. Target the

back of coves and around docks on the main lake and in the backwaters up river. Live bait works best with crickets and earthworms being the best all around baits. Artificial baits such as small Beetle-Spins also work well. Usually chartreuse or yellow work best. Catfish are also biting real well on Lake Harding. Catfish can be caught around docks and other deep water structure. Best baits are chicken livers, stink baits, dough baits or even raw hot dogs. Most people fish for catfish by using a bottom technique. Good luck fishing.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Shopping Local for Quality By: Ryan Kennedy YouTube: Ryan Kennedy Fishing Instagram: ryankfishing ryankfishing@gmail.com As outdoorsmen, we know that when all the chips are down and it’s time to catch that tournamentwinning fish or take the shot on a deer of a lifetime, the last thing we need is for our gear to fail. For a fisherman, the worst nightmare imaginable is to have a big fish on the end of the line and have your hooks straighten out or to hear that eerie pop in the line that means your trophy catch is swimming back out into the depths of open water. For a bow hunter, the worst nightmare comes from a failing broadhead, a rotated peep sight, or worn out bowstrings that turn an expensive bow into a pile of parts. It’s life. Products are going to fail, and if it happens at the wrong time, you are going to pay the price. Now, there is no cure-all that will eliminate problems in the outdoors forever, but you can make sure that you are using quality gear and performing routine maintenance to

keep everything in top shape. Looking back at the purchases I’ve made over the years, I can remember certain products that just weren’t what they were “supposed” to be according to the advertisement I got in the mail from big-box stores all around. So, what gives? I bought the product thinking I was making a good investment, but in reality, it was just another massproduced piece of garbage that wasn’t made to last. That is one of the many reasons I shop local. The “problem” with shopping local isn’t really a problem at all. This imaginary problem is simply a preconceived notion that shopping at a mom-and-pop store is going to break the bank. In many cases this isn’t true at all. A lot of times you will find yourself getting a better bang for your buck while shopping local and ending up with a much higher quality product. When I think of products I can trust day-in and day-out that are

offered at a more than fair price, I think of two different shops near me. When it comes to fishing gear, especially purchasing hand-tied jigs, you can bet that I will be found at The Dugout in Kennesaw, GA. With owners and employees that will give you an honest opinion without the sales gimmicks, some of the best custom jigs around, and prices that won’t leave a hole in your pocket, The Dugout is always among my top places to go for fishing gear. Now for my bow hunters out there, I’ve got the one stop shop for you. Whether it’s arrows, broadheads, rests, releases, sights, strings, cables, you name it, Backwoods Bowstrings in

Woodstock, GA has got you covered. Shannon Gott, the owner (who has over 35 years of experience as a bow technician), takes significant care of all his clients’ bows and crossbows alike. Strings and cables are made to order with BCYX material ensuring that they haven’t been sitting on some back shelf in a warehouse for ages. I know without a doubt that I can go into Backwoods Bowstrings and get Mr. Gott’s honest opinion based on experience with the products he offers, and know that I am walking out of his doors with gear that I can trust. Stop falling victim to overpriced poor-quality goods folks… shop local!

Local Lakes & Forecasts Fishing in September Dr. Andrew Cox As far as fishing is concerned, September is a transition month. The first of the month continues to have hot air and water temperatures making some days outdoors uncomfortable. However, those outdoors will feel tinges of fall during morning hours. For the later days during this month, anglers will definitely feel the first days of fall leading into full swing fall angling in October and November. I have written about fall fishing in previous articles. Readers will probably surmise that this is my favorite time of the angling season. Anglers on the water during this month may find fish schooling on area lakes and waterways. Anglers may catch schooling bass, hybrids, and possibly stripers. Unfortunately, this fishing activity is over just as quickly as it begins with the fish moving elsewhere or going into deeper water. Crappie and catfish may be found fishing during evening hours.

Over the course of this month, anglers can find cooler water temperatures, hopefully making fish more active and in shallower water. Anglers can explore streams and rivers entering reservoirs. With their cooler, shaded, and flowing waters, fish may be easier to locate and catch. September is a good month to explore Georgia’s trout waters. The Chattahoochee River from Lake Lanier’s Buford Dam into Atlanta’s northern suburbs offers good bank, wading, and boat access, particularly within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation areas. Some stretches of the river also offer angling opportunities for shoal bass and stripers. Checking the national recreation area website will show you various access points. Streams and rivers in Georgia’s extreme northern counties continue to provide excellent trout fishing. Make sure to consult the Georgia fishing regulations

to determine special regulations regarding certain streams in the North Georgia trout fishing area. Most trout streams continue to be open to fishing during this month. Information available through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will provide information on the trout stocking schedule for area waterways. An added bonus of September fishing is that area waters are not as crowded and with lower boat activity. School is in full swing by the time this month rolls around, particularly after the Labor Day holiday. Hunting and keeping up with college football takes other outdoor enthusiasts off the water. Accordingly, there is typically less boat traffic with quieter and more tranquil water conditions.

Though continuing to be hot and muggy at times, September reminds us that fall is just around the corner. Good fishing can be found over the course of this month for the angler willing to be outdoors and able to adapt one’s angling methods to the gradually changing water and weather conditions. Good angling and be safe. Author’s Note: Dr. Andrew Cox is a contributing writer to outdoor publications and newspapers. He is a member of the Georgia Outdoor Writer’s Association. He has been fishing the waters of Georgia, Alabama, and north Florida for over forty years. Dr. Cox financially supports his fishing habits as Professor Emeritus at Troy University, Phenix City, Alabama. He may be contacted at andrewtrout@aol.com.

Eric Welch Welch’s Guide Service www.welchsguideservice. com 706-455-2323 Water temperature: 84-85 degrees, level: 1/2 foot below full pool, clarity: clear. The bass are still scattered, and this has been the hardest year to pattern bass with all the rain and storms we’ve been having. The baitfish have not been traveling in big schools. You will find smaller schools of bait, and once the fish hit them, they are not regrouping back together, which is not good for a topwater bite. Water temp and lake level has been staying the same due to the rain. I’m still starting out at daylight looking for fish that are breaking. You will see some fish breaking around in the flats, but they don’t stay up long. I’ve been targeting these fish with a new Strike King Baby Z fluke with a 1/8 ounce head, throwing in

the breaks or just throwing it and letting it fall back down and then pop it back up. I’ve been getting a few blow ups on the Whopper Plopper, but they are not taking it, as most of the bait they are feeding on is only 2 to 2.5” long. I’ve been getting some fish on a dropshot with the Strike King Baby Z. I’ve been picking up some fish around brush with a Strike King Fat Baby finesse worm Texas rigged or shaky head. Also try fishing around docks with a Strike King Ocho wacky style with a 1/16 tungsten nail weight in the head. Maybe we will start getting some cooler weather and the fish will start going into thier fall patterns. Don’t forget 2018 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Tournament. Water temperature: 85 degrees, lake level: full, clarity: 3 to 5 feet. The striper fishing on Carters remains consistent. The fish are deep in the daytime and not as deep in the dark. Finding fish that are willing to feed in either situation is key this month. In the dark, the fish are willing to come check out a Hydro Glow light and feed on anything that doesn’t require much work. Fishing fresh live bait is key to getting them to feed. The stripers that are eating at night, or at least searching for a meal, are in the 50 to 60 foot range over a range of bottom depths. Schools of 4 to 6 fish are the norm right now with lots of fish coming to inspect baits only to reject them and descend back down. In the daytime, the stripers are schooled up on the bottom, usually below a large quantity of bait. Live alewife or a Ben Parker spoon is the way to go. Day-

time fish are easy to find in the mouths of the creeks, but getting them to eat can be difficult. The hybrids are a different story, and that’s the reason we target them more in the warmer months. They are anywhere from 30 feet to the surface feeding on small baits at night. They show up in much larger schools and are much more eager to eat your baits. The way to go right now is 3 to 4 inch shad on small circle hooks. Look for them in the creeks on the south side of the lake anywhere from 30 feet out to the mouths. In the daytime, they are holding near trees and timber. The spot bite has been ok with live bait. Finding them is the problem most days. After you find them, they are schooled up and competition for food makes them easy to catch. Deep water in the creek arms and shallow water edges on the main lake are the place to hunt green fish. The walleye were feeding ok before the big storms, but after the water came way up with all the muddy runoff, we haven’t seen many.

Local Lakes & Forecasts lake Allatoona Striper/Hybrid

Allatoona should remain at full pool, 840 feet above sea level, throughout September. We saw some surface temperatures approaching 90 this summer, but we didn’t experience the blistering heat of years past. A mild fall forecast would have the lake experiencing earlier than normal temp drops and turnover which would be great for our striped fish. Summer patterns will hold while hybrid and smaller striper continue to feed on schools of shad all over the lake. The bigger fish over 10 pounds will be hard to find since they are still sheltering from the heat in their summer haunts. Overall, the fishing this summer has been good, and the lake has plenty of threadfin shad for its forage base. The thermocline will remain in place throughout September and into October in the 22-24 foot range. Downlining and slow trolling weighted flatlines with live threadfin and small gizzard shad will be the ticket until turnover begins. Morning and evening are primary feeding periods, but cloudy days can make for an allday bite. Good areas have been Iron Hill, Bethany Bridge/Red Top, Stamp Creek, Cooper’s Branch, Illinois Creek, Kellogg Creek, Little River, and up in the Etowah River

towards Canton. There are fish everywhere, so take your time with your electronics and find them before you put baits down. Usually 2-3 hours of graphing to find good fish will pay off better than randomly plopping baits in the water. Surface activity is always a bonus when you have hybrid in a lake. As always, keep a keen eye out for the telltale splashing and thrashing of a wolfpack of hungry linesides which can be seen from a mile away. Bucktails, casting spoons, popping cork and fly, Rooster Tail, Chug Bug, Sammy, Spook, and even ¼ ounce jigs with curly-tail chartreuse or white plastic will take these aggressive feeders. Dropping down a live bait while casting at the breaking fish may score you a better quality striper or hybrid. Also, this time of year is a good time to follow hungry fish back into Little River into the shallows where they ambush the plentiful supply of baby shad schools. If power trolling is your thing, U-rigs and leadcore will work well into late October/November when the lake begins turning over. Capt Mack’s umbrella rigs are the way to go. Bumping bottom in 18-20 feet across long points will draw the hits. You’re likely to get hung up a good bit, so keep a u-rig retriever on hand. HINT: Be courteous on the water to your fellow anglers and make sure you give wakeboarders dirty stares.

Local Lakes & Tournaments lake lanier striperS Forecast by: Clay Cunningham www.catchingnotfishing.com 770-630-2673 Fishing has been all over the place on Lanier the past few weeks with some good days and some tough days. I’m looking forward to some cooler weather. Right now the water temperature is in the low 80s and the water has been surprisingly clear. As the lake turns over in the coming weeks, expect this to change. The first part of turnover typically occurs the last two weeks of September. Look for the pattern to change quickly as the water temperature drops on the lake. Downlines will continue to be best in early September. The correct setup is a Shakespeare Striper Series light action rod paired with a Penn Squall 20 Linecounter reel. The Linecounter is very important. Spool the Penn Squall with 15 or 20-pound Trilene Big Game line. Then rig up a 2-ounce Capt. Mack Swivel Sinker and a Gamakatsu 1/0 Octopus hook

the Berkley J-Walker 120 and the Berkley Driftwalker. These two baits are new and just hitting the market. Pick a shad based color or a bone color and you are good to go. Look for schooling fish and cast right in the middle of them. Just be prepared at all times or a striper will take your lure and rod. Looking forward to fall and some cooler weather.

The fish are easy to find on your Lowrance, but getting them to bite is another story. Just keep putting the bait right on their nose and wait. Mid-lake still seems to be holding most of the fish, but don’t overlook the pass. I have marked a lot of fish in there this

week. They just don’t want bite. We are marking some big schools in the Allatoona Creek arm, out over open water at Stamp Creek, and a few more from Galts to Kelloggs Creeks. The fish are on the move, so you should be as well. The topwater bite has been hit or miss, but keep a Spook Jr. ready just in case they pop up. The south end of the lake has been best for topwater action right now. Trolling may be the best allaround bite going right now. Mack Farr U-rigs in all white seem to be the ticket for the trollers currently.

You still need to be concentrating in the deeper, cooler water in September. You should try your luck as far down the lake as the dam and Goat Island area. In a normal year in September, I will be fishing my baits at 35-50 feet and at a water depth of 50-120 feet. Mornings usually produce best at the hours of 6am until around 11am, and the night bite should be best from 6:30pm until around midnight. In September, your weekday fishing will not be crowded with all the recreational boaters, however, the weekend boaters will still be out and about, maybe not quite as crowded as last couple of months, but you will definitely have company on Saturday and Sundays. As always, be alert of

your surroundings and practice defensive driving. You should start seeing a few surfacing fish this month, so keep your favorite topwater lure tied on to a good medium action spinning rod and keep it handy for that spur of the moment boil. If you are still having to entertain family and friends on your pontoon boat, it’s a good idea to keep that same rig on your pontoon, because when you least expect it, you will run up on some surfacing stripers. If you are planning on doing some fall and winter time fishing with us, now is a good time to book those trips to get the date you desire. Call or text me at (256) 401-3089.

Patience is the key to putting fish in the live well. We need to be enjoying the smaller bass on the table. We must work on lowering the population for a while so the fish can grow larger. Please look into the Swab-ahog program and help us gain the data we need to begin stocking the Florida strain in our river, as it is working in other Alabama lakes. Forecast by: Capt. Wes Carlton Georgia Lake Fishing 770-318-9777 www.georgialakefishing.com Water temperature: 81 degrees, lake level: full, clarity: clear. Bass: The bass bite has been awesome the last couple of weeks. We have caught most of our fish near the main lake channels on point and humps. The drop-shot bite has really picked up. Try using a Robo Worm or a Zoom Fluke Jr. The key to finding these summertime bass is staying close to grass or structure. I pay close attention to my electronics when scanning for grass and fish. This bite should continue over the next few weeks with some topwater action starting to happen early in the morning.

Trout: The trout bite has been a little tough lately. The few fish that we have caught have been deep. Try trolling small crankbaits (Ugly Duckling size 7) in and around the southern portions of the lake. The brown trout bite should pick up over the next couple of weeks. Look for these fish to start showing up in the 20 to 30 foot depths on long points. Yellow Perch: The perch bite has been great lately. These fish are in every creek in the lake. We have had good success fishing the grass beds and clay bottoms in the 20 foot depths. Jigging and crappie minnows seems to be producing the most numbers. We have also caught some 16-inch yellow perch on a drop shot rig tipped with a worm. This pattern should continue for the next month or two. Good Luck!

FISH & FISHING

LW Tour pro Clent Davis, of Montevallo, Ala., brought a fivebass limit to the scale Sunday, Aug. 12 that was the heaviest sack of the three-day 2018 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Ouachita, Arkansas. Davis’ final day weight of 17 pounds, 13 ounces catapulted him from 10th to first place and earned him the $300,000 top prize. With a three-day total of 15 fish and 36 pounds, 13 ounces, Davis beat out second-place Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops pro James Niggemeyer, of Van, Texas, by more than seven pounds. “I don’t believe that I just won this,” said Davis, a former FLW College Fishing standout for the University of Montevallo. “I almost walked away from professional bass fishing last year. I was burned out on fishing. I sold all of my gear – my boat, all of my rods, my reels, every piece of equipment that I had. It wasn’t from failure, it was because I was burned out. Davis’ decision to rejoin the tour—after some prompting by FLW Tour Senior Tournament Director Bill Taylor—was definitely the correct one. He finished the season ranked No. 25 in the Angler of the Year race—his best finish since his rookie season. He cashed checks totaling more than $62,000 in seven events and qualified for his third Forrest Wood Cup appearance. “I knew that the only way that I was going to win this week was fishing brushpiles,” Davis said. “There are so many ways to catch fish on this lake, but if it was going to happen for me, it was going to be offshore, fishing out of the brush.” Davis relied on a 12-inch, plum-colored Mister Twister Mag Buzz Worm fished in the 22- to 30-foot depths. “I fished awful all week, losing fish, but I caught enough to squeak into the top-10 by 1 ounce,” Davis said. “I’m not supposed to win

t times, success on the water comes from changing your approach. Let me share some examples. No matter what lure you choose, there’s a compelling desire to cast it as far as you can and retrieve it on the surface or just below it. Trollers insist on a full spread well behind the boat on top of the water. Anglers who prefer to drift with the current fish natural baits or artificials a distance from the boat on the upcurrent side and closer to the surface. Even those who fly kites on the offshore grounds keep live baits barely splashing on the skin of the water. The tendency in all of these examples lies in ignoring the fact that distance on the water must be measured vertically as well as horizontally. Most fish species spend the major portion of their existence at or near the bottom of the water. Consider, too, that there are some species that will suspend at mid-depth or cruise somewhere between top and bottom in search of food. Even moderate attempts to cover vertical distance as well as horizontal can make a difference. If you enjoy casting and retrieving an artificial and you have two outfits, rig one with an artificial that skims the surface or just below it and put an offering on the other that will sink to the bottom. Alternate them on casts, and you will quickly learn where the fish are in that spot. If trolling becomes your technique of choice, rig one line on a downrigger or weight it sufficiently so that it covers the mid-depth or close to the bottom. And, if you are just drifting with offerings streamed on the upcurrent side, fish at least one of the baits or lures at a reasonable depth. Probing the depths becomes even more important when there is structure on the bottom that attracts fish. Some species will hug the structure while others will probe and prowl the area. Fishing a bait or working a lure from the bottom to the surface in these waters

often is paramount to success. It is usually more productive if you focus on the upcurrent side of the structure. Veteran anglers keep an outfit on board expressly for deep jigging. It’s rigged with a leadheaded bucktail or some other type of metal that boasts the weight to get the offering to the bottom. It can be rigged with natural bait, a natural bait tail behind the bucktail or an artificial tail such as a plastic worm. It works on countless species. The key is to drop it to the bottom straight up and down and then retrieve it with a bunch of moves with the rod. You’ll find it is much more productive when the retrieve is close to the boat rather than working it to the surface at an angle. Vertical jigging won’t work every time, nothing does, but it’s a method you want to remember and use when other approaches don’t produce fish.

f you want to be a successful bass angler, you have to learn to fish a jig. I don’t know anybody, anywhere, who’s a successful bass angler, who doesn’t know how to fish a jig well. It is so versatile, and it catches quality fish. Personally, I love a good jig bite, so it’s also one of the most fun ways to fish. There’s not another lure on the market that has been tweaked and built to fish different types of cover and structure like a jig, and that’s part of its appeal. Jigs come in so many different shapes and sizes that the possibilities are endless. Changing out the jig’s trailer can make all the difference in the world, too. If you are just starting to get serious about jig fishing, an “Arkie”-style jig would be best to learn with. A 3/8- to ½-ounce size, really the first kind of bass jig head that ever came out, is where to begin. I use it for flipping, as it works well around wood, rock, gravel, ledges, and you can even swim it. You basically fish it like a soft plastic worm. Cast it out and

let it go all the to the bottom on a slack line. Pull it off the bottom a few inches and then crawl it along. Most of the time when you’re casting or flipping, you’re imitating a crawfish, so think about a one of those walking around on the bottom. He’s not going to be jumping around a lot. If something chases him, he might scurry along quickly, but they usually move fairly slowly. Fishing a jig does take the right gear. I fish 20-lb. Vicious fluorocarbon with an improved clinch knot, a good high-speed reel and an NEPS 90HF rod from MHX. It is a 7’6” heavyaction rod with a fast tip. That rod is absolutely perfect for jig fishing. You can make accurate presentations with this fastaction tip, and the heavy power gives you the backbone to pull fish out of the cover. There are tons of jigs with this style. The best ones always have a good Mustad hook. Keep the colors simple; green pumpkin and orange in clear water and black and blue in dirty water. Jigs are weedless and made to be fished in heavy cover. Give them a try, and you’ll soon see why everyone who bass fishes likes a jig.

Charleston’s Sheepshead Offer Southern Hospitality By Tom Schlichter

L FISH SMACK is the Ultimate Fish Attractant. Odin Lure Company partners with BioEdge Fishing Products to make the exclusive Fish Smack attractant. This is the perfect mixture and designed specifically to be injected into the Baitwell of all Odin Lure Company lures. The gel-like mix will slowly release the attractant scent as the lure is retrieved. Attracting more fish stimulates fish feeding. FISH SMACK will attract fish from afar. ike most southern ports, Charleston, S.C. offers plenty of inshore angling opportunities. You’ll find redfish in the bays, seatrout in the channels, plus flounder, cobia and spadefish on local wrecks. “Those are all fun,” said Darcy Hill (#fishcharleston), but if you want to hook something with a real sense of Southern hospitality, the inshore sheepshead fishery is tough to beat. From Isle of Palms to Folly Island, and right on up into the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers surrounding the city, you’ll find these battle-ready fish hugging structure.” An abundance of sheepshead doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. Quite the contrary, Hill pointed out, “Sheepshead can be challenging to catch. You have to poke into all the nooks and crannies amongst structure points, and keep moving until you get on them.” For bank fishermen, Hill recommended public access points like the Folly beach, Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant piers. Boaters should tie-up to pilings, docks or other structure (where legal) and fish each piece thoroughly. Sometimes, she said, moving your bait just 5 or 6 inches to one side or the other makes a ton of difference. “We generally use fiddler crabs or oysters for bait,” explained the 32-year old Folly Island resident. Bury the hook in your offering and hide the point. To get the bite started, chum with crushed oysters or barnacles. Fiddlers work best from May through February while oysters rule in cooler months. Get your line tight to structure, then lift it up slightly and drop it down slowly. Most bites come on the drop. The end of the ebb and start of the flood usually see the best scores.” Setting up for sheepshead, Hill uses a Carolina-rig with a size 1 Owner Mosquito hook, a ¾-ounce egg sinker and a 1-foot length of 30-pound test mono leader. She’ll team this with a fast-tip rod and KaskKing 3,000 series Kodiak spinning reel filled with 40-pound test KastKing Super Power or KastPro braided line. “I like the abrasion resistance of these lines,” she noted, “and that Kodiak reel just gets the job done. Last week it out-muscled a 15-pound spadefish.” Keep in mind, Hill added, that sheepshead can be light biters, so watch for line twitches in addition to feeling for strikes. Set the hook hard because these fish have a big set of teeth and tough lips. Pull straight up, not to the side. Keep your rod high and walk the fish away from the nastiest tangles as you reel up. Charleston’s inshore sheepshead average 3 pounds but can push into double-digits. Two years ago, Hill took fellow KastKing pro staffer Christin Kruger on her first sheepshead foray. “She caught a 10-pounder!” laughed Hill. Now she’s a sheepshead fan for life.” October is prime time for Charleston’s sheepshead. Boaters can launch at Shem Creek (free) (www.ccprc.com/3301/Boat-Landings) in Mount Pleasant, or at Isle of Palms Marina (www.iopmarina.com; $15 weekdays/$20 weekends). For overnight accommodations, consider Shem Creek Inn (www.shemcreekinn.com) in Mount Pleasant or Sea Side Inn (www.seasideinniop.com) on Isle of Palms.

he action peaked at the end of August here in northern Costa Rica, with multiple sailfish releases and daily shots at marlin battles. Frank Bellizio, Bob Sherley and Chet Jasak had the trip of a lifetime with sweet sailfish and mighty marlin releases. Once they got home we received this: “I returned last week from my trip to Nosara,” wrote Frank Bellizio, of Tampa, Fla. “It was great to finally get to go fish with your team in Costa Rica. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the trip and will recommend Fishing Nosara to everyone. “Bob has ALS and his mobility and strength are not the best. Both Capt. William and Capt. Francisco really accommodated us so that we were able to help our friend land both a sailfish and marlin. “Bob was a diver and commercial fisherman in his earlier years. We are all 71 or older, and he said this was probably his last chance to catch a sailfish or marlin. Capt. William on the Wanderer and Capt. Francisco on the Explorer made it happen. “If Capt. Francisco wanted to, he could have ended our day earlier, but he hung in and we got the sailfish late in the day. Capt. William had to work the Wanderer over and over to keep the marlin in position so Bob and I could get it landed. These men and their crew (Johnny and Elias) are much more than just employees, they have heart, and you are blessed to have them on your staff.” Kathleen Clarke of Ottawa, Ontario came to us as a novice angler, but after her trip on the Discoverer she is a full-fledged big-time bluewater angler. “Just wanted to let you know that we had an incredibly amazing time on our fishing trip,” Kathleen wrote in an email. “I don’t think that it could have been any better. Capt. Carlos and Mate Kevin were stellar. I would highly recommend that crew to anyone. “Kevin kept the boat very clean and tidy and made sure we all had everything we needed. Lunch was excellent, also, as was the fruit. We caught a mix of mahi-mahi and sailfish, also saw porpoises and turtles.” Most recently we received this one: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic thank you for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team,” wrote Jeff Broom, of Jacksonville, Fla. “In three days we got three marlin, two blues and a massive black, three sailfish, a huge dorado, and a good deal more tuna and mahi. “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. It was definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’”

hen the Spanish conquistadors came to Ecuador, they were in search of gold. The Incas found most of their gold in the headwaters of the Amazon. I recently found gold in the Ecuadorian Amazon… golden dorado. I’ve spent 25 years on the rivers of Ecuador leading kayak and fishing trips. Three years ago, I decided to find golden dorado. Most dorado fishing occurs in Bolivia or northern Argentina. It just didn’t make sense to me that Ecuador, with such similar topography didn’t also have golden dorado. As a fly fishing guide, one of the most fun and sometimes challenging aspects of the job is finding new fishing opportunities. It isn’t unusual for my friend and co-guide, Bob Gernandt, and I to float some stretch of river we’ve never seen to develop a new fishing destination. Doing this in another country can be a bit more complicated, especially when you are heading into one of the biggest jungles in the world. Having a lodge in the cloud forest of the Amazon has allowed me to tap into local knowledge. It also helps to have a partner in-country who knows the lay of the land and can speak the language. Last February, my partner Angel and I spent a month tracking down dorado leads. Angel visited one community after another with photos of golden dorados. The first breakthrough was learning that indigenous communities call the fish by its Ketchua name, Gualo. That led us to a handful of possible rivers to check. We were dependent on local river transportation. The indigenous communities have used dugout canoes for centuries to transport people and goods in the roadless jungle. These canoes are 12-meter-long boats carved out of a tree trunk. We were able to check out three different sections of rivers using these narrow and incredibly tippy canoes. The advantage is these boats can negotiate whitewater while being pushed upstream by a 40-horse outboard. They are almost impossible to stand in, so they are not the best platform to cast an 8-weight fly rod from. We eventually transported a raft and fishing frame upstream in order to float a section of river. It didn’t take long to catch several Ecuadorian golden dorado as well as another species of fish call sabalo. Sabalo fry are the favorite food for dorado, so they are likely found together. If the sabalo survive the dorado, they grow into great sport fish. Their shape is similar to a largemouth bass, but they are much more aggressive and hard fighting. The golden dorado prefer rapids and fast water at the washout of rapids, while sabalo like smooth fast water between rapids. It presents an ideal situation for fishing because there’s no down time! Once you catch a golden dorado, you are hooked for life. These are some of the hardest hitting, hardest fighting, highest jumping fish in the world. I can’t wait to hook into more gold. Ken can be contacted at Endless River Adventures, 800-2247238, endrivadv@cs.com, www.endlessriveradventures.com. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

ick Ratliff, 21, of Elizabethtown, Ky., a senior at Campbellsville University, will be fishing the big show when the Bassmaster Classic launches on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in March. He’s also riding around in a fully rigged Toyota Tundra that’s pulling a Nitro Z20 bass boat, and he’s holding a check for $7,500 for tournament entry fees. It’s all thanks to some last-minute heroics that helped him win the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket. Ratliff fought down to the final minutes of the third day in an oh-soclose bracket against a scrappy West Virginia University junior, Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, Va. The anglers wrapped up the day with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. Ratliff, who is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing, plugged along consistently, throwing a weightless wackyrigged stickworm and keeping his faith. “I had the feeling I was behind,” he said. “I kept my head down, and I knew if the Lord meant it to be, then it would be.” With just 30 minutes left in fishing time, Ratliff picked up three more fish that allowed him to cull up to his winning 13-8. Ratliff was emotional and stunned as family and friends hugged and congratulated him. “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said of the win and the Classic berth. “It was so close. I thought I’d lost. I really did.” For more information, visit Bassmaster.com/college.
