MIND THE GAP: ADDRESSING OVERHEAD BRIDGE STRIKES A troubling rise in commercial trucks striking overhead bridges demands urgent attention. These preventable incidents, notably in British Columbia, cause costly infrastructure damage, severe traffic disruptions, and endanger public safety.

These are not mere accidents but often stem from driver error, improper load securing, poor route planning, incorrect permits, or ignoring height restrictions.

The impacts are widespread, affecting supply chains, emergency response, and public trust.

While stiffer penalties and increased enforcement are positive steps, a broader strategy is crucial. This must involve rigorous driver training on height awareness and route compliance, better adoption of in-cab warning systems and commercial-grade GPS for oversized loads, and a review of permitting. Investing in improved signage and advanced warning systems at low-clearance points is also vital. A concerted effort from industry, regulators, and drivers is needed

to keep our transportation arteries safe and operational. We must ensure that these vital links in our economy are protected from such avoidable damage.

In this issue, Ray Gompf examines the issue of overhead bridge strikes and offers his opinions on what really needs to be done.

125 Years of Mack Trucks “Helping Build Our World and Pioneering the Future”

ery few companies globally— especially those founded in the United States—can claim the honor of celebrating 125 years in business. That number shrinks further when you focus on the automotive and trucking industries. However, Mack Trucks has proudly earned this distinction. On April 8, 2025, Mack Trucks celebrated its 125th anniversary in style against the backdrop of Brooklyn, New York, where it all began.

Mack Trucks has been there—moving materials, people, and products—during some of the most pivotal moments in modern history. Mack was there during the construction of the Hoover Dam; it helped build the Panama Canal, and it transported the brave men and women who served during World War II. In one form or another, Mack Trucks 10

has played a part in building much of the modern world. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, Mack Trucks chose its anniversary to launch an allnew, ground-up on-highway/regional hauler aptly named the Pioneer.

Drawing upon the Mack Anthem and advancing its design into the modern era, the Pioneer represents a leap forward in smart systems, aerodynamic efficiency, integration, and material upgrades. Driving the Pioneer isn’t like any traditional heavy-duty hauler experience—it feels more like taking an F-150 Limited out for a cruise.

The Anthem was released eight years ago, and the Pioneer takes what the Anthem offered and turns up the volume.

The exterior of the Pioneer features a bonded single cab, allowing for greater rigidity and build efficiency. The result is a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape.

For the first time, the Pioneer includes full cab skirts, a raked-back wraparound windshield, and lowered fenders and shoulder lines. The result? A truck that is 11% more efficient than the Anthem, making it the most aerodynamically efficient highway diesel truck in the world (each percentage point in efficiency equates to $500 USD in operating savings).

The front of the Pioneer is bold and masculine, as a Mack should be. The bridge line across the grille houses the Mack nameplate and the iconic bulldog, now in a recessed perch to maintain aerodynamic efficiency. (Side note: if you opt for the top trim Pioneer, the bulldog comes in gold to signify the premium level.) The Pioneer offers two trim color options: Graphite and Brite.

aggressive appearance. The headlights and fog lights are of an active design, moving to illuminate the direction of travel and featuring a signature “M” design when viewed head-on.

As you walk around the Pioneer, you’ll quickly notice the attention to design integrity. The lines of the truck are consistent, flowing around the frame.

Panel gaps are minimized with tight, uniform tolerances. Mack’s designers put comfort and driver usability at the forefront. For instance, ingress and egress are improved with re-engineered step rails: the final step is now deeper than the first, bringing the driver closer to the cab and making entry and exit easier and safer.

Once inside, it’s clear Mack went to great lengths to elevate the driver experience. The Pioneer offers eight inches of additional shoulder room, a one-inch increase in door height, and 3.5 inches more door opening width. Tall grab handles run nearly the full height of the door for improved access. The steering wheel features a flat bottom to

improve legroom and comfort.

But the showstopper? The upgraded seats. They’re wider and taller than their predecessors and come with heating, cooling, and massage functions. The passenger seat includes a full swivel option and premium material upgrades, including full leather. Once seated, it’s clear: this isn’t your average commercial vehicle. The cabin feels luxurious—on par with the interiors of high-end pickup trucks. This premium feel extends to the drive itself, offering a smoother, quieter, and less fatiguing ride.

Mack Trucks invested countless hours in focus groups, analyzing materials, touch surfaces, and color schemes.

The result? Warmer, lighter, and more inviting interior options. Gone are the dark greys and charcoals—replaced by Air Force Gray and Canyon Brown.

When it looks like metal, it is metal.

Mack also understands that fleet owners and independent operators alike prioritize efficiency, uptime, and safety.

The Pioneer offers optional full digital

mirrors that enhance both visibility and aerodynamic performance. These can be customized in number and position to suit specific needs. Pair this with smart applications like My Mack and Mack Connected, and owners can monitor vehicle performance, track uptime, and anticipate maintenance needs. These tools help reduce downtime and avoid costly breakdowns. The My Mack app even allows drivers to control HVAC functions remotely, schedule reminders, and program pre-set conditions—all from their smartphone.

For a company that helped put trucks on North American roads, designed the first integrated powertrain, and pioneered innovations like oil and air filters in engines, the Pioneer marks a bold new chapter. Load Insurance and the trucking industry

Q: What is the stupidest line any business could use as justification for the way they operate?

A: Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.

A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a friend who owns his own small trucking company and he’d been sitting with his insurance broker in the process of renewing his company’s insurance policy. He noticed the spreadsheet line where it detailed “load insurance”.

Naturally, he asked the broker why the carrier had to pay for a load that’s owned by somebody else for the benefit of somebody else and the broker said, “because that’s the way we’ve always done it.”

That’s not a line I would use on someone who thinks. Thinking has too often been replaced with accepting what you’re told to think. My friend did not say, “Oh OK!” He decided there is something he was going to do about it.

I mentioned to him that in Latin America, shippers are expected to pay their own insurance for their own loads.

The trucking carrier pays for the vehicle insurance as required but the carrier does not pay for the insurance on the load. When you think about it, Canada Post doesn’t insure your package; you pay extra for your own insurance on the package. The courier industry always recommends you post your own insurance on the packages they move around for you. So, if one part of the transportation industry doesn’t pay 14

for load insurance, why not all of the industry? The shipper pays the insurance for their air freight. The shipper pays insurance for their marine moved freight.

The shipper pays for rail moved freight.

Why then are trucking carriers expected to pick up the cost of insurance on somebody else’s load?

There has to be a better way.

It’s time our insurance industry stopped with the “it’s the way we’ve always done it” line and place the insurance burden on the real owner of the load. Trucking carriers need to spend insurance money on their real liabilities, not the liabilities of a third party who happens to be using your transportation services to move their freight to their customer.

Now here’s the big issue. When one starts to change things to fairness, there’s always push back. Change is difficult to achieve. People get defensive about their position and industries are even more reticent to effect change even if it would make their processes easier.

But even worse than push back is the reticence of regulators to get involved. Unless you’re a lobby group, getting to speak to a legislator is near impossible. Unless you’re a lobbyist with a great number of colleagues under representation, it’s spitting into the wind. The insurance industry is reticent to change. The government regulators aren’t known for opening doors to changes especially if they make sense.

It’s almost hopeless.

This is where my friend finds himself.

However, every one of us has abilities we rarely consider and rarely use. We all have what used to be called “a Rolodex”.

No, not an expensive watch. It’s a rotary file of business cards and contacts. Some of these contacts are well known to us, some not so much but we can pick up a telephone and talk to the party or email them and they’ll get back to us. When I was on the road doing long haul, I had a list of mechanics I could call if the need arose pretty much anywhere in the US or Canada.

I would attend trade shows and talk to a wide range of people in support roles and file their business cards. Now I must tell you, the Rolodex in your mind is always better than the Rolodex on the wheel of cards or even in your searchable Rolodex on your phone. One of the people in my mind’s Rolodex I remembered had written some software a few years ago and an insurance company operating in Latin America and the world had adopted his software for their operation in Latin America to help trucking companies find loads and know the load was insured by the shipper. So, I asked him why we can’t do that in the US and Canada, and it appears that’s exactly what he was thinking. Now that people are asking questions and there’s a train of thought to ask questions with the view to changing things to the way it’s done in the rest of the world, the right people are being asked the difficult questions and success is going to happen. It may take a while, but the questions are now being asked, and changes will happen.

Trailer Safety and Equipment Maintenance

I

recently read an article about a Wabash lawsuit stemming from a 2019 accident where two people in a Volkswagen car were killed when their car went under a nearly stationary 2004 Wabash trailer. The original award was $462 million and later reduced to $108 million. The rear impact bumper was blamed for failing and they blamed Wabash for lacking safety when federal requirements at the time the trailer was built, were met. How many years is a manufacturer held accountable for a piece of equipment they manufactured many years ago? The stock has dropped over 60% in the past year, and the company has lost a lot of money.

A trailer that is 15 years old would have travelled 2 million miles or more I estimate. I would estimate the guard rail would have been replaced or straightened 2-3 times during that time.

Who is responsible for maintaining those repairs and replacements? Was it even Wabash who did the maintenance?

Who were the mechanics? Did the replacement or straightening adhere to current standards or the standards at the time the trailer was built?

I know Great Dane will not warranty a bumper if it wasn’t ordered for the trailer by VIN and installed by an authorized dealer. How many other manufacturers do this? Most trailers have a 5 year limited warranty from new.

Some trailers only warranty to the first owner, and when ownership changes within the original manufacturers warranty time, the warranty is lost.

The federal government is who regulates safety.

The trailer in the accident was built to federal requirements at that time. The lawyers said that Wabash did not keep up safety standards and there were better safety features available. So now a manufacturer must use safety beyond the federal requirements? That is what the lawsuit said and the jury agreed.

The jury felt Wabash could have built a stronger rear bumper, but chose not to.

when it was built? Who maintains it?

Who inspects it? A trailer is only given an inspection once a year. Should this frequency be increased? When should a trailer be retired for no longer being able to keep up with current safety regulations? Once a manufacturer warranty is over, how many years must they be responsible for the trailer? I think the people who are certified mechanics and parts manufacturers should also play roles.

The lawsuit did not point out that both passengers in the car that were killed, were not wearing seatbelts. It also didn’t point out the driver was legally drunk. The original rear bumper was made to withstand impact at 30 mph which was within federal regulations at the time of manufacture and the time of the accident in 2019. Only in 2022 did regulations require bumpers withstand impact up to 35 mph. There was construction and traffic was slowing and almost stopped so the trailer was not moving. The speed of the car was estimated at 55 mph. If vehicles ahead of you are slowing down and almost stopped, why was the car going so fast at impact? And why are the lawyers arguing that Wabash should have built the rear guard to withstand a speed of 55 mph? The lawyers referenced the accident that killed Jayne Mansfield in 1967, long before the accident in 2019, which had nothing to do with the current accident.

Trailers are a necessity in trucking.

Trucking is an essential industry as we all learned during the Covid 19 pandemic. We get angry at them for being big and slow and in the way.

We want to hurry around them and we curse them for congesting traffic. I think that truckers should have their own lanes. If they have their own lanes, there is less chance of collision with a passenger vehicle. But I don’t see you complaining when you sit down to eat the food they brought you. We all have to learn to cooperate with trucks and their trailers on the road. We must recognize they are heavy because they are carrying the things you need, and it is dangerous to us in a car if we get in an accident with one. Respect trucks and their trailers because we need them, be more patient around them, and maintain a good distance from them. If the courts are siding against manufacturers who followed the law, then the laws must be adjusted by governments to meet the standards that the courts think are appropriate.

I think this case does bring up the issue of maintaining a trailer. Should it be maintained to a higher standard than

5 Ways To Get The Work-Life Balance You Need

In this connected world, it’s all too easy to let work obligations cut into your personal time. While greater flexibility is crucial for many, it’s important not to let the idea of ‘working from anywhere’ lead to ‘always on the clock’. If you’re looking to bring more balance back into your life, start with these five tips.

Track your time. The first step to reclaiming balance is to find out where the imbalance lies. Put some effort into tracking your time for a week or two and see where and how it is being used. Many companies have online time-tracking tools that you can trial for free. Do some research to find the one that works best for you. Take this information and see if you can lessen distractions throughout the workday so that it doesn’t start crossingover into your evenings or weekends.

Set boundaries. Prioritize your schedule and communicate your availability with colleagues and clients.

Being clear on your work hours and response times will help reduce the need to check on work after hours or on your time off. If there is a need to check in after-hours, set a specific hour to do so and time limit for your responses.

Schedule breaks. Add breaks to your daily calendar so that not only is your time blocked off, but you’ll also get reminders that a break is needed.

Whether it’s a 15-minute stand up and stretch or an hour-long lunch with a walk and some fresh air, taking time away from your desk will increase your overall productivity, help with creativity and reduce levels of stress.

Automate tasks. With today’s technology, automating tasks is a safe and reliable time-saver. For those that run their own business, cloudbased accounting software, such as FreshBooks, can save you time by automating processes to create invoices, track expenses and calculate taxes, leaving more time to focus on the rest of the business.

Set priorities. Plan your day the night before and prioritize your tasks by their importance and urgency (high, medium and low) along with how much effort will be involved to complete them. Once the priorities are set, block out time on your calendar for the high and medium ones and the lower priorities can be worked on in between.

T.T. Burger Arpoador

I

went on a cruise to Antartica, and it ended in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I stayed a few days in Rio to explore before heading back to Canada. I have never had such terrible food lacking any resemblance of nutrients in my life on that cruise, so I was excited to get off the boat and get some real food!

If you ever get to South America, you will not be happy if you are a vegetarian. The culture is obsessed with meat! I didn’t see many vegetables eaten either. Mostly only potatoes and usually in a french fry form. Argentina has the highest beef consumption in the world. Then USA and Brazil in third.

If going to Rio, I highly recommend the area that T.T. Burger is located, called Arpoador. It’s where Copacabana and Ipanema Beach meet. I could walk to both beaches in a few minutes. This area is safe as well. There are parts of Copacabana beach where there are pick pockets and cell phone thefts. In Arpoador, there are police everywhere and I felt very safe. I was easily and safely able to walk about 5 minutes from my hotel even while dark to grab a burger.

Not many people in Rio speak English, so it can get frustrating. I 24 MAY JUNE 2025

left multiple shops because of lack of communication and found translators didn’t help much. Luckily, I walked in T.T. Burger and one of the employees spoke great English. He helped me through the ordering process on a computer kiosk. I chose their classic TT Burger, though he did highly recommend the truffle burger. My classic had 180g of premium Angus blend, melted semi-cured cheese, organic tomato and lettuce, a touch of acidity with sweet and sour red onion pickles and TT sauce. I also ordered some fries, and he strongly suggested I get a large dulce de leche shake. You also get to choose how done you want your meat patty. I went with well done.

The T.T. stands for Thomas Troisgros, who is a 4th generation chef, so I knew I was in for a treat. I sat down and they placed cutlery down and a paper placemat to eat on. The placemat says, “Preparado Para Comer O Melhor Hamburger Da Sua Vida?”

Which translates to “Are you ready to eat the best hamburger of your life?”

After about 5 minutes, the food arrived.

The shake was the first thing I tried, and it was caramel deliciousness. I’m glad I got the large shake. The french fries were very crisp and salted perfectly. I usually hate fries but these ones; I ate

every single one of them. They’re not quite as delicious as McDonalds fries, but still excellent. The burger was juicy and dripped. My hands got quite dirty, which is a sign of a good burger. I saw signs about guava ketchup. Honestly, I couldn’t get the ketchup packet open to try. My hands were too greasy, and I couldn’t get it open! But I did see you could buy bottles of it.

I saw a lot of locals in this shop and that’s why I went in. It was busy and a fun spot where people were truly enjoying their meals. I noticed it first driving by, then walking by and knew I had to go in a give it a try. I really loved my burger, fries and shake. T.T. Burger has locations in Sao Paulo as well. I would absolutely stop in if I’m ever in Brazil again. It wasn’t a bad price either. Everything came to about $16 so I think it was reasonable and right by two gorgeous beaches. T.T. Burger is a great spot to enjoy on a beach day, or any day. Be sure to ask for a glass of water too because the milk shake makes you very thirsty.

Distracted Driving: It’s not Worth the Cost

Distracted driving has become the most serious hazard on the road.

A

lthough distracted driving has been against the law for more than a decade, it seems to be worsening. Cell phone use is a significant distraction, but it’s not the whole story.

The three main types of distractions while driving are visual (looking away from the road), physical (taking your hands off the steering wheel), and cognitive (letting your mind wander from the task of driving). It comes down to the inability to pay attention to the driving task. Losing focus for a few seconds can be like driving with your eyes closed.

Factor in the time required to return your focus to driving when you get your mind back on track. Those few seconds are all it takes to make your day go sideways.

Fines for distracted driving start at $368 and add four points to the driver’s record, minor punishment when you consider the possibility of causing a collision that involves serious injuries or fatalities. The Insurance Corporation 26 MAY JUNE 2025

of BC (ICBC) considers distracted driving as one of the high-risk driving infractions that lead to interventions and prohibitions under BC’s Driver Improvement Program. A driver with two or more violations within 12 months will undergo a review of their driving record and may have their licence suspended for three to 12 months, a significant penalty for a professional driver.

Using an electronic device while driving is the most common, but other activities are also distracting: radio, books on tape, podcasts, daydreaming— anything that can take your focus away from your task. In most jurisdictions, distracted driving charges usually fall under using an electronic device while operating a vehicle. Causing a crash while distracted by other means may fall under a charge of driving without due care or consideration. No one wants any of those charges.

Avoid the temptation. Before you

drive, take a moment to clear your cab of anything that could be distracting. Put away loose items and ensure your phone is secured and Bluetooth is enabled. Take a moment to clear your mind of outside thoughts, like what you’ll be doing at your destination, issues at home, or other worries. Training your brain to focus only on driving can be easier said than done when there’s a lot on your mind, but the effort is definitely worth it.

When you set out, focus on your route. Although it may be the same route you drive most days, traffic changes constantly, so it’s important to keep your mind on the driving environment.

Set aside time to deal with everyday stresses–planning for it means you will have a clear mind to focus on your responsibilities as a driver. Think of it as putting on your game face.

Remember that distracted driving comes at a cost we can’t afford. It’s important to stay focused.

HTEC Opens Sixth Station Strengthening BC’s LightDuty Hydrogen Refueling Network

HTEC announced the opening of its sixth retail light-duty hydrogen refueling station, located at 688 Southeast Marine Drive in Vancouver, BC, in partnership with 7-Eleven Canada and utilizing Cavendish Hydrogen equipment.

HTEC’s broader H2 Gateway Program rollout, including hydrogen production and liquefaction facilities, additional refueling stations, and zero-emission fuel cell electric trucks.

HTEC designs, builds, owns, and operates Canada’s first network of hydrogen refueling stations. The Southeast Marine Drive location joins HTEC’s five existing stations in the Lower Mainland, Kelowna, and Vancouver Island, marking another important milestone in making hydrogen a viable alternative fuel for customers seeking low-carbon transportation options.

Additional support was provided by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) through the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative, and by the Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA) through the CleanBC Go Electric Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Program—a collaborative effort between BC Ministry of Energy and Climate and CHA to expand hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the province.

The development of this station was partially financed by the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) through its Charging and Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure (CHRI) initiative, announced last year, which supports private-sector deployment of largescale clean transportation infrastructure.

2024 BMW i5 M60 Is It Better Than an M5?

n some of my other reviews of German vehicles, I’ve often referenced that I’ve owned a few BMWs and absolutely loved them.

My M3, 535i and the amazing M5. All three of these were great yet the most mind-blowing was my 2012 M5. It was a fun, luxury rocket that did everything you expected and then some. It was the epitome of “The Ultimate Driving Machine”. That was until I drove the 2024 BMW i5 M60 and I would now say it could be better than the M5.

Driving my M5 was an absolute thrill. Back when gas prices were much lower, I would stomp on the pedal throughout the day and the M5 would deliver mind blowing performance.

Even though I would have loved a manual, mine was an automatic.

Regardless, it was just fun to drive, and of course, it was a luxury vehicle.

Now the 2024 BMW i5 M60 doesn’t only look great, it is absolute beast of a machine. We all know that electric vehicles have the ability to deliver massive amounts of power, but being able to deliver such power that pays homage to legendary performance and driving experience is another matter.

BMW seems to have done that to almost perfection.

I had driven the i4 eDrive40 a couple of years ago and that car was a delight to drive. So, it really set the stage for

the i5 M50. As soon as I sat inside the 2024 i5, I knew I was in for a great week. There’s an impressive amount of technology in the i5, but it’s tasteful, still retaining the classic look of BMW. The large 14.9” curved screen, aimed towards the driver, houses all controls for the vehicle. There are some physical buttons, but overall, BMW has moved towards touch controls. It’s a cleaner look for sure, but I’m still a fan of simplistic buttons for basic controls.

The cabin is spacious and comfortable, like the gas-powered version. All seats, front and back, are comfortable and are designed to keep you in place whether cruising at 120km/h or doing enthusiastic driving NATIONAL MAGAZINE

around windy roads. And if you feel like a massage, the option is there.

Connectivity is a breeze with most cars nowadays, whether just with Bluetooth or using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. One caveat here is that when using the native system or trying to navigate through the apps, you really have to look carefully as the app icons are small. Many times, I pressed the wrong app button. Nothing major but just a point I noticed. The i5 M60 does offer a few options on user input: touch, the rotary controller and for some functions, gesture control. I used touch and the rotary control equally, and in all honesty, gesture control’s novelty wears off pretty quick.

The fun begins when you get in the car, but the real experience starts when you start driving the i5 M60. Right off the bat, I noticed the car to be nimble, more like a 3- or 4-series. Remember that this is a 5-series so it has some size and weight to it. With the lower center of gravity and heavier weight, I expected the i5 to behave “weighty”, especially when going around turns and corners. This was not the case at all.

Not only does the i5 cling to the road, the front end will tackle any windy road like a rock star. You really have to drive it to experience the level of performance that this car delivers.

with the M badging and this gives plenty upgrades. Right off the bat is the two electric motors, which put out a combined 593 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. This translates a 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of under 4 seconds, which will smoke the outgoing M5. Then there’s the adaptive M suspension, resulting in a more responsive and sportier ride. Add to this the tuned suspension, M Sport brakes, and rear-wheel steering and you’ve got an i5 that will keep a smile permanently on your face. Since the i5 is electric and you have no orchestra from an engine, the 18-speaker 655-watt Bowers and Wilkins surround system will deliver amazing audio to the cabin.

there was still a lot of unsettled weather in Vancouver. From rain and snow to clear days, the car behaved perfectly.

Even on slick roads, the M60 remained poised, never unnerved. I come back to my point of the car being nimble and being able to handle like the smaller i4, even though it weighs 2, 380 kg, which is darn close to full-size trucks.

I was able to throw it around so many different types of roads and take corners and not once did it feel big and bulky.

And when do you drive a BMW and not use the various drive modes? Never.

The i5 M60, like others in the line-up, has five drive modes, ranging from Sport to Digital Art. Not all of these 42 MAY JUNE 2025

actually change the actual performance; for example, Digital Art transforms the infotainment display into a piece of digital art and changes the ambient lighting and powertrain sounds. I kept the car mostly in Relax mode, which has softer suspension and is meant as the daily mode (for me anyway). Even in this mode, the car still performs, so don’t let the name persuade you otherwise. Sport just amps up the already available power in the M60, like getting an immediate dosage of steroids.

Now if some cheeky driver pulls up in a sports car and wants to race, press the dedicated Boost paddle (active for 10 seconds and unleashes maximum power) and blow his doors off.

The 2024 BMW i5 M60 is an amazing piece of machinery, loaded with top notch engineering, performance, and technology, wrapped up in a beautifully designed exterior. Yes, design and looks is a personal opinion, and the i5 M60 looks as good as it performs. The large kidney display, surrounded by BMW Iconic Glow, makes a statement, especially in the dark.

All this doesn’t come cheap, with our test car coming up at almost $110K. Is it too much? Maybe. But now, you’ve got a vehicle that again defines “The Ultimate Driving Machine” and is perhaps a worthy, and better, successor to the legendary M5.

Striking infrastructure with oversized loads.

E

ighteen! Yes, eighteen times, in a short space of time, oversize loads have struck bridge overpasses and there’s no excuse for even one.

There’s a considerable process involved in hauling oversized loads that restrict those loads from all roads, except for those listed on written permits unique for each load to which the driver, and escort (if required), must strictly adhere.

There are also listed on the permits when movement on selected roads is allowed.

The permits are extremely specific and clearly written in detail. These permits to move an oversized load must be in the driver’s possession before the load ventures onto the listed public highways and at what time it’s allowed on such public roads.

The theory is if the driver of the oversize load follows the details listed on the permit, no infrastructure strikes will not happen.

Apparently, there’s impatience to either wait for the permit documentation to arrive or there’s an inability to read the instructions of that permit. Maybe there’s internal pressure for the driver to get going without said permit. Also, in some cases, the oversized load can be restricted to less than the posted speed limit.

Now, it’s up to the driver, while on route, to check the bridge height of each and every overpass or infrastructure obstruction along the way, that it provides clearance for the load the driver has measured and that it matches the permit. Pulling oversized loads is not 44 MAY JUNE 2025

for the young driver fresh out of truck driving school. Oversize loads should be restricted to well experienced drivers with proven skills.

The oversize load permit is to be followed to the letter without fail. There’s absolutely no room for deviation. The only cause for a bridge strike is driver error. Now, infrastructure being struck can happen when a dump truck with its box raised strikes infrastructure and usually the dump box shears from the truck and causes great deal is traffic congestion, if not severe damage to either the infrastructure or vehicles unlucky enough to be in close proximity.

These situations often result in that driver being fired and charged by authorities with a variety of traffic violations. Sometimes, if serious loss of life is involved there could be criminal charges as well.

To say these wrecks are driver error is often correct but also an understatement.

I’m sorry if the rest of this piece is going to sound like it’s repetitive but to strike infrastructure is a distinct lack of proper training. There just can’t be another reason. As we move into red seal skilled trades training for truck drivers, the oversized load will become an advanced skill that must be recognized as having been trained, tested, and mentored. This training and such should be noted as an endorsement of the driver’s licence, possibly as a separate certificate of training to be held in the personnel file at the employer’s head office.

Before the red seal part becomes the norm, governments must monitor the few companies that are involved with over size load movements. If a carrier is involved in an infrastructure strike, then that carrier must go on a watch list until they’ve proven to be reliable. If a carrier is involved in a third strike, then that carrier’s authority must be withdrawn forthwith and the owners, directors and administrators must never be involved in the movements of oversize loads again, ever. No, ifs, ands or buts. Just find a new way to earn a living.

As for drivers of oversized loads, one infrastructure strike and you should find a new career because trucking isn’t for you. Eighteen infrastructure strikes is eighteen too many, especially for one jurisdiction. That’s not acceptable for the entire country.

Insurance companies must also play their part in weeding out the bad actors and ensuring those bad actors find a new career other than trucking.

These wrecks are symptomatic of an ill-trained workforce which again is unacceptable. These wrecks are symptomatic of an administration that doesn’t follow through with verifying skills and background checks. These wrecks behoove the weight of the government bearing down on these companies that are involved in these unnecessary wrecks.

Without proper provable training and without concentrated enforcement, these wrecks will continue which is totally unacceptable. Let’s make trucking good again.
