Dear Friends: Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida assisted more than 4,300 men, women and children during FY 2012–2013. Our appreciation goes to the individuals, corporations, organizations, government entities, and foundations who continue to support our mission. Without you, we would not be able to help those who come through our doors. As the year began, we launched the three-year Journey Home Campaign, a $12 million major gifts and endowment initiative to ensure the strength and viability of the Coalition for years to come. With a $6 million head start from Orange County Government and the City of Orlando for construction of our new Men’s Service Center (MSC), the campaign presents unique opportunities to invest in the Coalition, both now and in the future, and help transform the lives of homeless men, women and children.

A caring staff and stalwart supporters have helped to provide a fresh start to our neighbors in need. 02 | LEADERSHIP

By year’s end, our Journey Home Giving Society membership had doubled in size, thanks to our major donors and investors in the MSC and Women in Philanthropy initiatives, as well as our Journey Home Breakfast. In a generous, mid-year show of support, Wells Fargo Foundation, Bank of America Charitable Foundation and Universal Orlando Foundation stepped forward to fund services for military veterans in the MSC. This year brought great anticipation that we would soon be able to transform lives as never before. In August 2012, the first wall panels were raised for our MSC and a beautiful building took shape by year’s end.

With construction continuing into the new fiscal year, prospective clients began signing up to take advantage of the soon-to-come residential programs and our thoughts turned toward an early 2014 grand opening. A rebranding of our organization took place during FY 2012-2013, thanks to the generosity of Hilton Grand Vacations and Gensler. The exciting undertaking resulted in a new logo, colors, typography and vocabulary that better reflect our mission of transforming lives. Introduced just into the new fiscal year, the look is reflected throughout this report. Concurrently, a new website was designed and readied for launch. Among our accomplishments this year, we held the successful 20th Anniversary Hearts of Gold concert, welcomed over 17,000 indispensible volunteers, continued our monthly More Than a Meal tours, and served nearly 300,000 meals. A caring staff and stalwart supporters have helped to provide a fresh start to our neighbors in need. Please read on to find out how you have done so. Sincerely,

Brent A. Trotter President/CEO

Staff From the intake and case managers, children’s services providers and program administrators to our support staff, resident assistants, and administrative team, Coalition employees work tirelessly to help clients get back on their feet. With staff support on-site every day and night of the year, our committed workforce is integral to the ability to provide safe shelter, crucial services and meals to hundreds of men, women and children each day.

35%

Volunteers The tireless effort of volunteers truly keeps the Coalition going. During FY 2012-2013, more than 17,000 volunteers contributed over 60,000 hours of their time and talent to help our organization. These amazing volunteers - our Coalition heroes - tutored students, helped in the daycare, served meals, taught Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) sessions, and assisted at our events. Groups large and small participated in 296 projects, to include serving meals, landscaping, painting, tutoring, mentoring, and so much more.

Clients The face of homelessness has changed, with family homelessness on the rise. In fact, close to 100 families were included among the 673 homeless men, women and children served by the Coalition each night during FY 2012-2013, with a total of 444 families helped over the year. In addition, 2,266 single men and 587 single women came to our doors during the 12 months. With the help of our dedicated staff and on-site partners Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare; Goodwill Industries of Central Florida, Inc.; OCPS LifeStrides Program; and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Downtown Branch; the Coalition continued to offer our residents food, shelter and a path to independence.

Donors Those who provide financial and in-kind assistance to the Coalition play an integral role in fulfilling our mission of transforming lives. Their contributions help us provide hope, shelter and crucial services to clients as they return to a life of selfsufficiency. During FY 2012-2013, 77% of our operating resources came from individuals, businesses, foundations, community and faithbased organizations, and other private sources; 23% came from government contracts. Our Journey Home Campaign enables donors to make a long term financial investment in the Coalition through naming opportunities, special events, annual giving, grants, and other major gift initiatives. By the end of this first campaign year, the number of Journey Home Giving Society members, who contributed or pledged a minimum of $5,000, had doubled. In addition, we generated a greater awareness of our Legacy Society, whose members have provided for the Coalition in their will or estate plan.

Programs

We are more than just a shelter. By partnering with other community organizations, we strive to provide a continuum of care that far exceeds expectations and leads to a better quality of life for our clients and the Central Florida region.

Case Management

Children’s Services

Case managers serve as a lifeline to Coalition residents, providing one-on-one assistance to help create individualized plans for their future. They offer guidance and support throughout a client’s journey back to independence. Case managers also refer clients to our on-site partners, where they have access to job skills training, childcare, social services, educational opportunities, mental health counseling, and other assistance. More than 2,300 clients benefited from case management services this year in our Center for Women and Families (CWF), Women’s Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC), community housing and substance abuse recovery programs.

On any given night during FY 2012-2013, the Coalition served an average of 273 children with an average age of eight years old. Most of these children did not understand why they could not live in their own home or sleep in their own bed, and we strived to maintain a sense of normalcy for them in this time of family uncertainty. Over the year, we taught 76 children in our Early Childhood Development Center, with its fully-licensed daycare and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten programs. In addition, about 250 young artists participated in the six creative sessions, Family Art Days and visits to the Orlando Museum of Art offered through our Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) Program.

Kadette, a single mother, came to the Coalition with her two sons after she was laid off from her full-time job. As she thought about the help she has received from Coalition staff, Kadette shared, “... If total strangers could have faith in me, I need to have faith in myself.”

Three-year-old Shelly came to the Early Childhood Development Center with separation anxiety and pronounced behavioral issues, including outbursts of anger toward other children. With help from our onsite daycare, Shelly became social with other children, began to sing and dance, and fully participated in age appropriate activities. The services provided through the Early Childhood Development Center changed Shelly’s life.

81%

of the women and children at the Women’s Residential and Counseling Center were victims of crime.

Victims of Crime Nearly one in every four women is a victim of domestic violence and approximately 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year. The Coalition offers the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program at our Women’s Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC) and Center for Women and Families (CWF), which provides support and advocacy to adults and children who are homeless and have been victims of crime, predominantly domestic violence. An average of 41 new crime victims came through our doors at the CWF each month this year and 30 at WRCC, for a total of 835 individuals served. In fact, 81% of our residents at WRCC were victims of crime. Staff also received 3,113 calls on our crisis phone line this year. After leaving an abusive husband, Sherlann relocated to Florida in search of a better life. When she could not find a job, Sherlann turned to the Coalition for help. With assistance from one of the Coalition’s on-site partners, Goodwill Industries, Sherlann was able to find a job and now says her dreams are once again within reach.

Substance Abuse Recovery Our First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery Program is supported by 12-step recovery strategies and helps clients overcome addictions so they can return to lives of self-sufficiency. This program offers support groups, life skills classes and other services, and is comprised of components for both men and women. The women’s component is housed within the Center for Women and Families. This year, 82 women participated, working together with an offsite substance abuse facility. The men’s program has an emergency shelter phase located in our Men’s Pavilion, as well as a transitional housing component located in our nine on-site apartments. Together, these services helped 238 men this year. John struggled with alcohol addiction in the past. Upon entering the Coalition’s First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery program for the first time, John’s mood was bad and he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. After learning about the numerous programs available with this program, John began to feel that, “There’s actually hope left in the world. I can actually get my life back.”

Community Housing Program Our Community Housing Program helps qualified clients obtain affordable housing and offers rental assistance, case management, and other supportive services. The Community Housing program consists of two parts - Scattered Site and Housing Now. Individuals and families qualify for Scattered Site as long as they have had an income for the past 90 days and at least $ 1,000 in savings. This year, 22 families with 36 children took part in our Scattered Site program. Housing Now is a rapid rehousing program that targets newly-homeless families. The program helped 62 families this year with a total of 156 children. Nearly 80% of clients engaged in the Community Housing Program for two or months transitioned to permanent housing upon exiting the program. The life of Mark and Vivian began to unravel when their ailing daughter passed away in 2012. Unemployed and needing a place to live with their younger child, they found themselves at the Coalition and working with a case manager. Regaining employment, they qualified for the Housing Now program and were able to move into a place of their own. Vivian shared that they “...have no idea where we would be without this.”

Events

Coalition for the Homeless depends on the community’s generosity for 77% of our operating resources. Special events provide a way to invest in us and have a great time while doing so.

Hearts of Gold The Coalition held its 20th Anniversary Hearts of Gold concert on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Hard Rock Live, where over 1,400 people rocked with a purpose to the music of Southern Rock classic 38 Special. Presented by Bright House Networks, the event raised over $214,000 for our programs and services throughout the year. Emceed by Domino of radio partner 105.9 Sunny FM, the evening featured VIP receptions, a fabulous silent auction, a touching client video, chance drawings, a specially-designed t-shirt, and the opportunity to “Text to Give” via one’s mobile phone. In addition to Presenting Sponsor Bright House Networks, major event sponsors were Dellecker Wilson King McKenna Ruffier & Sos, Starwood Vacation Ownership, Walt Disney World, and Hilton Grand Vacations; our television partner was WFTV Channel 9.

Golf Challenge

Taste of the Nation

Journey Home Breakfast

Twenty-nine golfers dedicated a day of marathon putting and driving skills to support the Doug Spencer 17th Annual Golf Challenge on Friday, April 19, 2013, raising over $81,600 to benefit the Coalition. The event took place at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club in Kissimmee.

Again the year, the Coalition was honored to be a local beneficiary for Share our Strength’s 23rd Annual Taste of the Nation® Orlando. The hugely successful event took place on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Raising over $248,000 to fight childhood hunger, the night netted the Coalition about $55,000.

Our third Journey Home Breakfast took place on November 13, 2012, during National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, with 350 guests attending. The event was held at the Rosen Centre Hotel and provided an opportunity for those already invested in the Coalition to invite others to consider supporting the agency’s mission. It was generously supported by SunTrust Foundation with a gift of $10,000 to start the morning off.

Once again, top fundraiser was event namesake and chair, Doug Spencer, who single-handedly raised $12,390 for his 102-hole afternoon. Mike Schiappa was next, raising $8,210 for the cause. Other major fundraisers included Neil Peroga, Brian Wilson and Tony King. Kevin Aust topped the charts as to number of holes played at 168 holes! Hilton Grand Vacations was the day’s corporate sponsor. Event sponsors were Zerion Group and Spencer Consulting Services, which also provided lunch. Other sponsors included Stephens-Barrios and Tews Company, as well as those who named each of the 18 holes.

Over 2,300 people enjoyed delicacies prepared by 37 of Central Florida’s leading restaurants, wine and other beverages, live music, the “throw-down” cooking completion re-match, a silent auction presented by Neiman Marcus, chance drawings, a live auction, a chance to win the 100-bottle wine cellar, and much more. Emceed by DJ’s Scott McKenzie of MIX 105.1 and Paco of 105.9 SUNNY FM, the evening was presented by Darden Restaurants and organized by a volunteer steering committee representing a variety of local businesses and organizations. The Honorary Chairman was City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

A touching video, produced for us by Valencia Community College Film Department, brought tears throughout the room; and formerly-homeless student Angel Sanchez shared his inspiring story of hope. Musical entertainment was provided by singer-songwriter Matt Shenk. Our daycare youngsters presented each guest with a house key tied to a card about Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month. The event resulted in 15 additional members joining our Journey Home Giving Society and raised over $191,000 in one-time gifts and pledges for the Coalition’s programs and services. EVENTS | 13

GOVERNMENT PARTNERS Orange County Government City of Orlando

With $6.6 million in capital funding support from the City of Orlando and Orange County, the Coalition is completing a new Men’s Service Center (MSC) on our main Central Boulevard campus. Replacing the current Men’s Pavilion, this two-story, residential facility will serve one of the most underserved segments of the homeless population – homeless men – and we couldn’t be more excited! The facility, opening spring 2014, will allow us to provide men so much more than a meal and a place to sleep for the night. Now, we are poised to offer services that will help men move toward lives of independence... services such as: access to mental health counseling referrals, life and job skills training, access to educational opportunities, employment services, and health care referrals. So many past and present Coalition Board members have put blood, sweat and tears into this project. We are especially grateful to Ruffin Rhodes and Rhodes + Brito for creating the original vision; Tim Baker and Baker Barrios Architects for their generous in-kind pro-bono work as our design architect; and Glenn Fournier of Fournier Associates for donating thousands of hours of his real estate development, project management, and contracts expertise to lead this project on our behalf. We express our appreciation to the corporations, philanthropic foundations, individuals, and families who have invested in the Men’s Service Center this year by sponsoring programmatic initiatives, specific rooms, and various spaces within the facility. Your generous financial support will enable us to offer hope and case managed assistance to 250 men each day and to raise the level of assistance for specialized populations, such as the elderly and physically disabled, military veterans, and First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery Program clients. This, in fact, is our dream coming true to help homeless men reach self-sufficiency and transform their lives. We thank you for your commitment to doing the same. Our FY 2012-2013 Men’s Service Center investors are listed.
