As Chairman of the Skills Group, I’m proud to be the feature of our new ‘Departure Lounge Magazine’. The name of the magazine ties in nicely with our exclusive departure lounge and park & service where we offer the most relaxing and convenient way for you to join our coach holidays.

New for 2015 is our brochure full of 138 top destinations, some of which are featured inside this magazine. Look out for the party breaks where you can meet me and the team, always popular with all our guests we’ve shared some excellent memories and we hope to meet new and old friends on in January and February.

News for 2015 is that we’re proud to announce and welcome Laver Holidays into the Skills Group. Laver share a similar family run background to Skills and have a lot to bring to the group and our customers.

Laver joined us in April 2014. Earlier in the year I spoke with the editor at Route-One magazine and said “Laver Holidays has a loyal following that we want to grow. It also has a strong, family-oriented brand, and that is something we want to retain.” The move is positive for both companies as we look to integrate and develop both products offering more variety for all our customers.

5 MINS MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL...

While we had Nigel’s attention we decided to ask him some more questions getting to know the man behind the business, he began to talk about how he is currently involved in competitive Ballroom and Latin dancing, recently returning from the National Finals at the winter gardens in Blackpool, so we asked what sort of music are you currently listening too? “I’m currently listening to Classical music on my Ipad.”

If you had to pick, who’s your favourite Classical composer and why? “Frederick Delius” Nigel went on “I just love the flow and drama of his music.”

Travelling must be a big part of Nigel’s life; pretty hard to escape when you’re the boss! But over the years we asked where’s been your favourite destination that you’ve travelled too and why? Nigel reflects on his time in Afghanistan, visiting in 1997 on his motorbike, Nigel conveyed; “It was full of raw natural beauty, both the scenery and the people were beautiful.”

Popular Poppies

FACTS Skills Coaches: 17 attended Skills Passengers: 990 of you paid your respects by visiting the memorial art installation with Skills.

Total Visitors predicted: 4 million Total Poppies Made: 888,246 representing the colonial deaths.

Designed by: Ceramic Artist Paul Cummins who from Chesterfield who is a University of Derby PHD student.

Arriving early on a beautifully clear, fresh, November morning the crowds already assembling close to the Tower of London, wherever you turned cameras flashed as a legion of tourists lined up to take their once in a lifetime pictures, buzzing with a hopeful reminiscence.

But the crowds weren’t gathering to see a celebrity on the red carpet; instead they had arrived to witness the glittering and symbolic display of 888,246 individually planted ceramic Poppies designed by Derbyshire’s very own Paul Cummins, forming part of the art installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, each Poppy hand crafted immerses you in the surrounding grounds and represents the life of a British military fatality during WW1.

Swiftly we were navigated towards the garden entrance; there we proceeded to join a tide of bewildered faces as we continued along down a path to the right of the poppies.

The crowd remained extremely calm and subdued. It was hard not to get carried away, losing yourself with deep emotions in reflection of those who fell, protecting the lives of others and somehow trying to understand what we were encountering together.

Skills’ Directors would like to offer a huge thanks to all of the passengers who travelled with us to the Tower of London, it’s been an astonishing success with record breaking numbers who paid their respects to attend the Poppies at the Tower of London.

Jessica is this year’s new Skills continental manager, Jessica has been working in a vital customer service role since leaving school.

Before joining Skills Jessica started out at East Midlands airport gaining valuable experience within the travel industry.

Starting out Jessica gained important experience before eventually being promoted to dispatcher of interchange for turnaround of the aircraft, which was a; “massive responsibility.” Essentially this meant she was in charge of all aircrafts.

Having come from the world of aviation, Jessica firmly has her feet on the ground and is excited to start planning future 2015 and 2016 tours. New tours already available include; Oberammergau & the Bavarian Alps, the French Riviera and Lake Maggiore. “It was a hard decision picking a top 5, but I couldn’t leave these out.”

Jessica hopes to bring a fresh appeal to Skills continental tours offering new tours and exclusive itineraries including a full day excursion to Milan when visiting Lake Maggiore. Day 3 - Today spend time at leisure in Carlisle.

Day 4 - Join us on another full day excursion as we visit Grasmere and Bowness-on-Windermere. We then head to Lake Windermere, the largest natural Lake in England at 12 miles long. Bowness in particular is a hub for watersports and is now Cumbria’s main tourist destination.

Day 5 - Today we say goodbye to the Lake District as we retrace our steps home.
