The Irony of Living in North Idaho

By Kathy Osborne It is July. How can it be July already? Weren’t we just under three feet of snow and then so much rain that the very ground was a sponge? Now, here we are, just a few weeks later and summer is upon us! Such is north Idaho.

This kind of weather is what makes us slow down to smell the flowers when they bloom yet blast through all we need to do in the blink of an eye. How ironic that we should tell new comers “Slow down. You are in Idaho now” while living every season as fast as we can to cram it all in. For all our whining about the long winters the truth is we need them by the time summer is done with us.

So, to add to the chaos that is summer I submit yet another “things to do” list which can be found on page 4. But this one is a bit off the beaten path.

This one is a list of out of the way places including second hand stores, eating establishments, and short hikes. Raising a family in the northwest is expensive and much of the magazine published “to do” lists of places and events to check out are just too expensive. This is an effort to point out that our area is full of interesting places to go, good food to eat, and decent, inexpensive places to shop all on a shoestring budget.

You will see on this page that the Sam Owen Fire District is having their annual pancake feed coming up in July. I have attended this fund raiser in the past. Not only is the food excellent and an absolute bargain, but the drive to the station is gorgeous as well! Check out the article on page 27 of this issue for more information and directions to the station.

As we blast through the next few days and put the 4th of July behind us, it will be time to get ready for the many county fairs, rodeos, horse shows, and garden shows coming up! In particular, check out the Garden of Artistry ad on page 4 for yet another opportunity to slow it down and walk through the work of numerous artists in a spectacular setting. Admission is free and the show continues for three days.

It will seem that the warm days of July and August are short lived indeed as the evening temperatures begin to dip in September. But before that happens, lets make the most of where we live, be that swimming at the many public beaches, canoeing Sand Creek, hiking Gold Mountain or Scotchman Peak, or sitting in a porch swing with iced tea conversing with the neighbor - let’s make the most of it.

And don’t forget, while this area is filled with beauty and many that live here live well, many do not. If you have extra food in your garden, extra eggs, or maybe too many apples, consider a donation to the food bank!

A Where to Go & What to Do List for Country Folk

I have been toying with this idea for a while and finally decided to jump in. There is no end to publications in the northwest calling attention to places to eat, to stay, and to play all of which cost a small fortune. This is not that. This is a new list for people short on cash who want a good place to go out and eat, a good outdoor adventure, and a place to shop all on the thrifty side. In the little town of Priest River, Idaho there is a cafe, AJ’s Cafe. This spot is the quintessential location for breakfast and lunch. This establishment is only open until 2 PM. The prices are excellent, the service is warm and friendly, and the location is right in the heart of the Priest River Business District. Frequented by friends and neighbors in the community of Priest River AJ’s is a great place to eat before venturing out to discover the historic district, museum, or city park. Al’s is located at 215 High Street in Priest River. It was rated #3 of 15 Priest River restaurants on Trip Advisor.

Second on my list is a very family friendly day hike near Bonners Ferry, Idaho – Myrtle Creek Falls. The walk is short – only about 25 minutes. Beautifully displayed butterfly information stations are all along the path which includes a fantastic metal bridge above the creek and about 4 small switchbacks en route to the actual falls. This spectacular water work crashes through vertical rock faces to the creek below. Well cabled off for safety, the top of the path has a bench and stair steps that could double as another seating area. Take the kids. Take the dog. It is free! From U.S. Highway 95 in Bonners Ferry, drive west on Riverside Road this road turns into County Road #18, driving past the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge to the Wildlife Refuge office which will become visible.

You’ll find the Myrtle Creek Falls trailhead 1/10 of a mile northwest of the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge visitor center.

Third is a quirky little second hand store, of sorts, in the heart of Sandpoint – Serendipity Emporium on First at Bridge Street. This shop will appeal to the free spirit in you while the prices will definitely appeal to your wallet. Serendipity is a must stop on any trip to downtown Sandpoint. And that’s it for this issue!

Independence Day Trivia: It turns out that Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a “lap top” of sorts. The object actually was a small desk designed to sit upon ones lap. The lid propped up to create a strong writing surface and a drawer held the writing ‘pens’ and ink necessary for the task.

The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall

Bells. When was the last time you heard the clear ringing of a bell to call school into session? To call worshippers to the sanctuary? Or to announce the hour of the day to all in the community? Many such bells are gone from our culture replaced with the buzzing of cell phones which alert us to all we need to know. The time, temperature, what message from our friends. Cell phones are convenient but we have lost something valuable, powerful, and epic in scope by removing the bells from our everyday life.

Once upon a time the city of Sandpoint was graced daily by local church bells that often played a song and then established the time. Everyone knew when it was noon. Those bells, like others in our lives have been used to get our attention, to move us from one place to another, to establish a sense of order or connection.

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania resides a bell no one living today has ever heard. Its ring fell silent in the 1840s when a crack developed. Metal workers actually drilled small holes to widen the crack, stop it from progressing, and restore the tone of the bell. However, shortly thereafter another crack developed which rendered the “repair” a failure. With this the Liberty Bell itself was silenced forever.

Fortunately we live in a world of technological magic and with a little math and the knowledge that the tone of the Bell was E-flat, some students were able to approximate what the Bell sounded like. This can be heard at https:// www.nps.gov/inde/photosmultimedia-soundofthelibertybell.htm The Bell was not given the name “Liberty” in the beginning. In fact, no one really noticed much about it at all particularly the Bible verse inscribed on it - Leviticus 25:10 “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof.” This verse was intended for the Israelite nation to remind

them in the Jubilee year they were to release all property back to the original owners and slaves were to be set free. And so it was that the inscription on the Bell became the rallying cry for Abolitionists seeking an end to slavery here in the United States. They were the first to refer to the bell as “Liberty” and again some years later by those demanding the right of women to vote.

The Bell was hung in the belfry of the Pennsylvania State House, a structure we now know as Independence Hall which can be seen behind the bell in this image. This shows the beautiful glass hall where the Bell is displayed, but my experience was much more organic. When I first laid eyes on this historical artifact it was wrapped in clear film under a temporary, well guarded structure awaiting its new permanent home.

Independence Hall is beyond words but we all try to describe the intersection of time and space. This is where the arguments ensued. This is where men chose to risk their reputations, their fortunes, and their lives to birth a country through treason and war if necessary. In the Independence Hall Assembly Room it is as if they are all still there the history is so thick.

The tables, the fireplaces, the pens and papers.... one can almost hear the emphatic words of men unwilling to live another day under tyranny. Not everyone in the colonies wanted to break with England. But Independence was declared in this room. As history has born out the 13 Colonies were ill equipped for a war with England. Had it not been for France, we may well have ended up with a very different looking country.

Millions of people from the United States and around the world make the pilgrimage to Philadelphia every year to see this amazing object. I am glad to have been one of them so many years ago.

There is no charge to see the Liberty Bell, nor Independence Hall. But one should plan to spend hours in these rich historical buildings. Beyond our own two uniquely American documents, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, one may choose to visit one of the four last remaining copies of the Magna Carta. This centuries old document had an direct impact on American Law regarding principles of freedom, the rule of law, and due process. The document resides in the National Constitution Center.

Weed of the Month

By Chase Youngdahl, Bonner County Weed Department With summer well underway, vegetation is thickening and the weeds are continuing to develop...some even going to seed. If you haven’t had a chance to treat your weeds yet, it’s not too late—for many species, treatments through July and even in to August can be effective if the proper herbicide mixtures are used. Call the Noxious Weeds office for additional details and recommendations.

Weed of the month for July is Dalmatian Toadflax (Linaria dalmatica). A state listed noxious weed, and a very hardy perennial in the Figwort family. Introduced from the Mediterranean region of Europe as an ornamental, it grows to be 3-4 feet tall and develops bright yellow snapdragon looking flowers.

The stems are rough and somewhat woody at the base and become herbaceous towards the top. The main characteristics to note are the color and feel of the leaves…they are waxy and have a blue-ish tint. Dalmatian Toadflax spreads by both roots and seeds—the root system consists of a deep taproot, reaching 4-10 feet deep, and some creeping lateral roots. Each plant is capable of producing 500,000 seeds per year! However, the seeds fall near the parent plant and need to be carried away by vehicles, shoes or animals to spread.

Dalmatian Toadflax is well adept, growing in crop fields, pastures, roadsides, forest clearings and even riparian areas, and tolerates the poorest of poor sites—it has been known to grow in sub-arctic conditions. It is a persistent, aggressive invader that can drive out native vegetation to the point of altering the plant composition in a given area, thus decreasing native habitat for the animal community. While Dalmatian Toadflax does contain alkaloids, which are toxic to domestic livestock and some big game animals, it is in relatively small concentrations so a significant amount needs to be ingested in a short period of time for poisoning to occur.

I have observed Dalmatian Toadflax go to seed [in Bonner County] right around now, early-mid July, most of the time. The number of viable seeds they produce is outrageous, but they do not travel far on their own and the seed life in the soil is relatively short compared to most other noxious weeds. Even though it’s an invader that can spread overwhelmingly, it can be controlled with the right strategy.

As is the case with most perennials, hand pulling is effective with Dalmatian Toadflax when the plants are young and the root system is less extensive; and mowing prevents the plants from going to seed, but does very little to control it due to vegetative reproduction. Cultivation at two week intervals throughout the growing season provides reasonable control, probably the best method for a mechanical option. The most effective herbicide options are chlorsulfuron products, trade names include Telar®, Glean® and other generic chlorsulfuron may exist. Use one of these products along with a silicone or vegetable oil concentrate surfactant for best success—a non-ionic surfactant may suffice, but the silicone/vegetable oil surfactant helps to penetrate the waxy leaves. We Have A Lot Going On This Summer

Summer is a very busy time for the CO-OP Country Store. Everyone is busy getting gardens in. By July, cherries are coming on, hay is ready to put up, and of course the county fairs are just around the corner!

While Co-op Energy is out and about setting tanks and servicing keep fill orders, here at the store we are helping folks with everything from replacing pumps and water lines to keeping wild interlopers out of the yard and garden.

Haying season will be upon us soon so twine is flying out the door. Patti and George have a new line of Clam Shell retro patio furniture which is very popular this year. We still have a few retro BBQs as well.

July 4, 2017 is an important holiday for us so the CO-OP will be closed that day. We will reopen July 5 at 7 am for regular business hours.

County Fair season will be here soon and the CO-OP will again have a booth at the Bonner County Fair August 8-12. The theme this year is about getting back to our roots. The CO-OP has very deep roots in Bonner County dating all the way back to 1934, making it one of the oldest cooperatives in North Idaho. Stop by our booth and see our 80+ year history in pictorial form.

Bees, bees, bees! Everyone it seems is interested in talking about honey bees! This last spring various CO-OP employees had the great pleasure of speaking to several hundred youth about the importance of honey bees to our ecosystem and our food supply. We went to both class rooms and the Pre-Fair at the Bonner County fairgrounds.

BCGA Garden Tour Sunday, July 16

It’s time to gather some friends, put on your best garden hat, and plan a festive day visiting some of the finest and most intriguing gardens in the area. Seven hosts will open their gardens to the public for the annual Bonner County Gardeners Association Garden Tour. The tour is on Sunday, July 16 from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are $15 and are available at each of the gardens, or can be purchased in advance via PayPal at the BCGA website, www.bcgardeners.org.

Here are the gardens: “Shangri La”, Lindy Lewis, owner, 60 Bella Circle, Sagle, Idaho. A peaceful earthly paradise teeming with life and vitality. This garden features three mounds harmoniously filled with trees, flowers and shrubs. A whimsical art piece welcomes one to this garden.

A sunny veggie and berry area on one side of the house is balanced by a shade garden on the other. Blooming beds and a bubbling fountain provide color and movement.

Interesting hardscaping using recycled elements and art pieces combine with trees, shrubs and flowers in a relaxing and inviting garden.

“Hidden Meadow”, Seth and Kathi Samuels, 340 Leisure Lane, Sandpoint, Idaho. A former pasture, this 5000 square foot garden is now a productive place of rest and beauty. Fruit trees, berries and veggies as well as flowering perennials combine to provide a peaceful respite from the noise and activity of busy lives.

On August 12, BCGA plans to hold a plant sale at the fairgrounds on the final day of the Bonner County Fair. Members will share their garden favorites, perennials for fall planting, house plants, ground covers, vines, berries and more. Stop by and say hi and take home a few new additions to your garden.

Harvest Time in the Garden It’s July, and a walk through the garden reveals the reward for all the hard work of planting, weeding and watering for many weeks. Suddenly, the abundance can be somewhat intimidating. Maybe one planted a bit too much of something, or the plants grew much more prolifically than planned.

Don’t despair, this is a beautiful event.

What to do with all this produce happening all at once? Berries are easy.

Freeze the extras for a taste treat in the winter, or freeze them already measured for batches of jam to make later. Homemade jams and jellies are wonderful gifts.

Beans can be highly productive. Eat them every night for dinner. Pickle some. Blanch and freeze them.

Summer squash. Pick them when small, sauté them, steam them, stuff them, use them in stir fry. Make Zucchini relish.

Lettuce. Salads are so refreshing in summer. Get creative with lots of salads.

Root crops. Use carrots and beets as needed, leave the rest in the ground for later. Pickle extra beets. Pull onions and garlic when ready, allow to dry in shady area with air flow, then store for later use.

Tomatoes. Eat fresh in everything, can them, sauce them, dry them, make salsas, and celebrate them every day.

Peppers. Peppers dry very well for later use. Fresh, they are good raw or cooked, stuffed, sautéed, in all their flavors and colors.

Finally, please do not let all this wonderfully nutritious food go to waste.

The local food banks are eager to provide as much fresh produce as possible. Anything you donate will be appreciated and used. Fresh vegetables are expensive in the stores and are often passed by for less expensive options. Donate as much as you can as often as possible. Donations to food banks are tax deductible. And it feels good to share.

Integrative Cancer Care – The Cutting Edge – Part I Gabrielle Duebendorfer, ND

Imagine having been diagnosed with advanced cancer, you’ve gone through the agonizing first few weeks and have made a decision about treatment and people are starting to find out what is going on. Whoever you meet has this horrified look on their face and they either completely ignore you, are extremely awkward talking to you, proceed to tell you about who they know who has cancer, or won’t stop giving you advice about what you should do. You start to feel like you want to hide out at home, take a different aisle in the grocery store when you see somebody you know, maybe even get outright depressed or get obsessed with researching every lead on the internet.

When somebody we know is diagnosed with cancer we have to face the possibility of getting sick and dying as well – an uncomfortable situation that most of us are not equipped to deal with. Getting sick and dying has not been integrated into our way of life. Here are some ways to helpfully approach somebody who, for that matter, has any serious disease. First of all see the person, not the disease – he/she is still alive, living a life, but has to live with something difficult. However, this does not mean you should ignore this difficulty! You could begin with acknowledging what you know and sharing with how this situation is affecting you – dare to be vulnerable by expressing your emotions, which will be an invitation for them to share if they so chose. “How are you doing?” with a face full of agony is not going to be very inviting to share. Offering specific help like giving a ride to treatment, bringing dinner or taking the kids on a particular day of the week, is more helpful than saying “let me know what I can do to help.” Talking or inquiring about regular life issues, once the difficult issue has been acknowledged, brings a sense of normalcy to the encounter – life does go on. Invite the friend to an outing like you normally would or check in and share from your life via text or email, which gives them the choice to response on his or her own terms without any pressure.

Integration doesn’t just happen on the level of disease/death and life but also with regards to treatment. (1) Naturopathic and other integrative practitioners acknowledge the paradigm that cancer is more of a metabolic disease, a natural evolution, comparable to a wound that is never healing, rather than a tumor centric view of a growth that has be cut out and cells that have to be killed. (2) Israel & Schwartz (3) describe malignant growth to be the same as fetal growth in that both grow exponentially and in an undifferentiated way. This renewed, unchecked fetal growth pattern can be changed by cleaning up the microenvironment surrounding the cancer cell (terrain). In fact early cancers have been shown to spontaneously regress while established cancers can remain dormant.

Changing the terrain may prevent progression and contribute to regression.

Surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy are very effective with reducing the tumor load, but if the immune system and the mitochondria don’t get much help after that, the system is overloaded with the task of cleaning up treatment toxins and cancer cell debris. It takes a good 1.5 years to restore the immune system to fully functioning capacity after chemotherapy. Dr. Nasha Winters says that 70% of cancers recur unless the underlying terrain is addressed (1) So let’s talk about terrain. The extra-cellular matrix is influenced by toxin and pathogen exposur and elimination capacity, nutritional status, blood sugar and insulin balance, hormone equilibrium, inflammatory status, and stress response. For example, there are particular genetic variations that code for enzymes that break down estrogen and other toxins. If one has an overload of toxins in general, or excessive exposure to estrogen like compounds like plastics or commercial meat and dairy, and a poorly functioning elimination system overall, the risk for recurrence of breast or colon cancer is higher. These pathways can be supported nutritionally (methylation support) and elimination function can be improved (e.g. castor oil packs).

Integration in oncology needs to happen both on the social and medical level – it is truly the cutting edge of oncology. In part II of this article I will cover more ways to address the terrain to stabilize the cancer process as well as other naturopathic methods to complement conventional cancer care.

Recipes...

Ah, summer! Fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh eggs and milk and cheese! And if you don’t want to produce any of it yourself it is easily obtained at the local farmers markets. But how to prepare all this wonderful food without slaving over a hot stove when we would really rather be outside? One answer is to enlist the crock pot as often as possible. Bread is almost as cheap to buy at the market as it is to make. And sometimes even steak for the grill is a better buy than ground beef so keep your eyes open for those amazing meat sales through the summer.

Here are a couple of recipes intended to help make summer dinners easier and still take advantage of fresh vegetables. Enjoy!

Colorful Sweet Corn Soup

2 cups sweet red peppers 4 Tablespoons butter (not margarine) 1 Large yellow onion, finely chopped 5 cups sweet corn kernels ( fresh right off the cob if you can) 5 cups chicken stock 1.5 cup light cream Salt and pepper to taste ( garlic salt can give this soup a kick) In a medium soup kettle saute the onions and pepper in the butter on medium low heat until the onion is translucent.

Add the chicken stock and corn.

Continue to cook for another 5 minutes.

Stir in cream, salt, and pepper.

Simmer for 10 minutes on low heat until the flavors are blended.

In a medium skillet place the oil and onions. Cook the onions on medium high heat for about 6 minutes. Stir frequently.

Add tomatoes continuing to cook another 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon remove tomato and onion mixture to a large bowl. Let cool to room temperature.

Whisk eggs together in a medium bowl, add ham, cheese, herbs, salt and pepper if desired. Add tomato mixture.

In a heavy cast iron skillet melt the butter over medium low heat. Add the egg mixture. Cover with glass cover and cook just until eggs begin to set.

Shred additional cheese on top and garnish with parsley.

Continue cooking just until the edges become crispy. Remove from heat and set aside to cool for two minutes.

Uncover, and cut into wedges with a serrated knife.

Serve with fresh fruit if desired.

This easy summer dish can be served hot or cold, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Hands down one of the most versatile and nutritious dishes for a quick meal through the summer months! Enjoy!

Serve hot with a bit of dried parsley sprinkled on top, and with hearth bread.

Pineapple and Lime Cooler 16 oz. canned unsweetened pineapple chunks Juice of 3 limes 1/4 cup sugar 2 cups mineral water, still or not Ice cubes to serve In a blender combine the pineapple, lime juice, and 1 cup of mineral water. Blend until smooth.

Pour the puree into a sieve over a large bowl and press the pulp through with a wooden spatula.

You may put the sieved pulp into a pitcher to chill or simply add the remaining mineral water and sugar to taste. Serve over ice.

Basic Mediterranean Frittata I used to know a couple who prided themselves on the amazing garbage soup they made from leftovers in the fridge. Left over meats, vegetables, herbs and spices transformed a strange collection of simple items into wonder in a bowl.

A frittata can do basically the same thing.

This egg dish lends itself very well to almost any leftover in the fridge you care to add. A bit of care though- some things like onion, peppers, carrots, and other heavy vegetables still need to be sauteed first to avoid that “un-done” taste.

Chores! Who Needs Them?

Chores. I once heard a joke in which the comedian pointed out he was about 11 years old before he realized his name wasn’t “Git Wood.” We laugh at such stories because for older folks they harken back to a time when chores were a part of everyday life. So who needs chores? It turns out we all do.

Up until WWII the rural landscape of America was made up of thousands of farms and simple homes. Many of these farms grew crops and raised livestock. These two ventures alone required many hands through the day to get it all cared for and children were called upon early in life to milk cows, feed chickens, cook, clean, and often care for younger siblings. This was all in addition to attending school of some sort if they were lucky, and even then, often until only 8th grade.

Chores were a normal way for everyone in the family to participate in the smooth running of the home. Cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, sewing and gardening were all part of chores girls were often expected to help with, moreso as they got older. Although many young women did in fact learn to ranch and deal with livestock, mostly the young men were involved in this aspect of rural life.

But in the 1940s men left for war and many women moved from the farm to the factories to work during those war years. The idea of men’s work, and women’s work was skewed and so was the concept of chores. Many families left the farm and moved closer to towns where the work was.

As the youth no longer needed to do so many chores they were able to get part time jobs after school to earn their own money. This changed the home dynamic of chores as well.

Says Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace In Your Home “By paying children for chores with an allowance, you may be teaching your kids the value of work, but you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it.

Suppose you’re giving your son an allowance for mowing the lawn, but then your neighbor offers him slightly more for mowing his lawn. Does that mean your son should stop mowing your family’s lawn and mow the neighbor’s instead?”

Good question. Perhaps children will understand the value of the family unit better if they understand their place in it - what their own responsibilites are- much the same as adults identify with their own job purpose. Perhaps going back to the concept of chores and homework before phone, TV, or friends needs to make a comeback in our culture as helicopter parenting gives way to parenting through example and ...chores. Kids may not like it, but the responsible anchor of chores is an old and trusted method.

The Many Benefits of Journaling by Kathy Osborne

Journaling, in one form or another, has been around since the written language was created. If we consider the hieroglyphic written history of the Egyptians, for example, recorded history or stories written as symbols have been around even longer. It is the ability to write, to convey knowledge, to record an event which makes up history and history is not just national or only about a community. It is also about a single person who is able to write down thoughts. It is these thoughts that can change the person, or change the world.

When we journal we record our lives. This means we can write about current events, family issues, or business decisions. We may record the death of a loved one and all he or she meant to us. We may include a photograph or a poem along side the record. We may write down an idea for an invention and let that idea perk throughout the journal allowing it to become more than just the seed of an idea.

When we cannot sleep at night it is often because something is “on our mind.” Journaling helps us to remove the idea from our mind and put it to paper. It allows us to write down the part that is bothering us and allows us to process in a tangible way. When we write down where to squeeze the budget just a little more, or how we will speak to a coworker the next day, it releases us to go to sleep and sleep through the night.

Creativity, problem solving, awareness of our surroundings, decisions for the future, new business ideas, inventions, relationships, new recipe ideas, and much more can come from journaling. Maybe this is the time to try it.

Osprey Cruise Planned for July 15

The Osprey is a fish-eating hawk commonly seen in northern Idaho. At least 100 pairs nest annually in the Coeur d’Alene Lake region including the lower reaches of the St. Joe and Coeur d’Alene Rivers.

Adult Osprey along with the young of the year birds begin their annual southward migration in mid-September, traveling all the way to Baja California, Central America, and many all the way to South America. The adults return in late winter/early spring to the area where they originally hatched.

The University of Idaho and the Idaho Fish and Game Department have been studying and banding Osprey at Coeur d’Alene Lake for over 35 years.

The work is done to determine survival and mortality rates and to further define the migration patterns and wintering areas of the population.

To conduct this research, young of the year pre-flight Osprey are briefly taken from nests just before fledging. A band with a unique number is gently applied to one leg, and the 6-7 week old birds are safely placed back in the nests.

You may be wondering what the adult Osprey think of the process. The adults take flight when the research boat approaches. They make their displeasure known with loud, screeching calls intended to scare the biologists away; and, to tell the young Osprey to lie down flat in an effort to hide. Yet, these brave biologists have years of experience banding and they can understand ‘Osprey’ language. Knowing the adult birds are only using scare tactics, they go about their work and get away from the nest in no time flat.

The banding process goes very quickly. After the leg bands are applied and the biologists move away, the adults immediately return to the nests to find their young safe and secure...but sporting new leg bands.

None of us know if having a leg band is a status symbol or an embarrassment in the bird world, but the bands allow for the gathering of some remarkable information to help biologists learn about the species and to manage populations.

An Osprey viewing cruise has been scheduled for Saturday, July 15. The trip will run from 9am -11am. Boarding begins at 830. Be on time as the boat, piloted by Captain Carl Fus of Coeur d’Alene Lake Cruises leaves the dock promptly at 9am!

The cruise will be leaving from the east side of the CdA Resort boardwalk

by Tubbs Hill and McEuen Park. Parking is available at the McEuen Park parking lot and on nearby city streets.

The cost of the trip is $20 for adults. Children under 12 are free when with a paying adult. A family rate of $45 covers two adults and three children up to age 18. Seniors and students are $15.

Space is limited to 150 people and reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce at (208) 664-3194.

Wildlife Biologists will be in a small boat that will travel alongside the Lake Coeur d’Alene Charter Cruise boat. Wildlife Biologist and renowned Osprey researcher Dr. Wayne Melquist will take young of the year birds from nests and band them, while the passengers on the cruise boat watch and take photos.

Speakers on the cruise boat will include wildlife biologists and experts on bird species. They will be on board the cruise boat to provide fascinating biological information on several wildlife species. Sandy Emerson will emcee representing the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Natural Resources Committee and the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Dr. Lisa Manning, Lake Coeur d’Alene Waterkeeper, will present on her program that ensures our lake and watersheds are fishable, swimmable and drinkable and let you know how you can become involved.

Invited guest speakers also include the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality’s CdA Lake Management Team, the BLM, the Inland NW Land Conservancy, and the Cougar Bay Osprey Preservation Association.

Bring binoculars and a camera. Sun hats and sun screen are advised.

The annual event is sponsored by the Natural Resources Committee of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. Cooperators include The Nature Conservancy, the Idaho Fish and Game Department, the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the University of Idaho, the Audubon Society and the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Building Finances for the Future by Judy Baird

My last two articles were based upon my conversations with a local insurance agent and focused on how having insurance, or not having it, may impact your financial picture. We talked about how life insurance can protect a family from financial devastation and disability income insurance can protect one’s ability to earn a living.

There’s a third piece to the foundation of financial protection and that’s building for tomorrow. Building for tomorrow can be, and should be, more than just retirement. Let’s think of this differently. Let’s say our goal is to have financial security and to protect ourselves by having access to a fair amount of funds (cash) at some point in the future.

There are two basic options that can help us save for the future. Savings products are usually thought of as the first option for saving. Savings accounts are typically designed to be low risk and are most often guaranteed against loss. These include bank savings and checking accounts, CDs (certificates of deposit), bank IRAs, insurance products (which also can be IRAs), fixed and indexed annuities, and fixed and indexed life insurance.

Investments are the other option. These products are designed to be moderate to high risk and reward one for taking risk. These products all have a potential for loss of value. These products include real estate investing, metals (gold, silver, and platinum), stocks, bonds and mutual funds, group retirement (401k, 403b, 457), IRAs, and variable life insurance and annuities.

Now is the perfect time to start asking yourself some hard questions, regardless of your age. SAM OWEN FIRE DISTRICT TO HOST ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The Sam Owen Fire District will be hosting its 13th annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, July 22, so take a break and forget about cooking. Instead, go over to the Sam Owen Fire Station #1 for a breakfast that will start your day off right. A scenic drive along Highway 200 will take you to the Sam Owen Fire Station #1, located at the junction of Peninsula Road and Highway 200 in Hope. A steaming hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice and coffee or tea breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., all for only $5 for adults and $2.50 for kids under 12.

After breakfast take time to tour the station, meet the firefighters and our new Fire Chief, Jeff Wilkins and congratulate outgoing Fire Chief of 15 years, Bob Wathen on his upcoming retirement. You’ll have the opportunity to sit in the trucks, meet Phineas, the firedog and try on the equipment. It’s surprising how heavy it is. There will be free handouts for the children and the first 50 children will receive fire chief hats.

This is the major community event and only fundraiser for the Sam Owen Fire District. The monies raised are used for supplies for the fire house, including uniforms, communication devices, and important firefighting equipment. Over 60 volunteers, plus the firefighters and fire chief spend untold hours to collect donations, cook the meal and serve you a delicious breakfast. 2017 marks our 15th anniversary and we invite you to join us and celebrate.

The Sam Owen Fire District is committed to providing the highest level of fire protection and emergency services to all its residents, businesses and visitors. The District’s volunteer staff made up of local residents of various ages and backgrounds has been trained and equipped for both structure and wildlands fire fighting. We’ve got past medics from the Navy, past wildland firefighters, pilots, CPAs -- they all donate their time and expertise.

They train 3 times a month to hone their skills and keep up on the most current methods. The volunteers have either completed or are completing the nationally recognized Essentials 1 training course for fire personnel. In addition, a number of the volunteers are qualified EMTs and others have completed training in first aid, life support, rescue and extrication.

With several fully equipped fire fighting and rescue trucks, the District is able to respond to any fire or emergency situation. The rescue vehicle has the latest in extrication, land and water rescue equipment. The four-wheel drive wildlands vehicle can reach our most remote areas, and many of the volunteers have completed intensive training in wildlands fire fighting.

Predators in the Rural Setting by Kathy Osborne

Living in the rural landscape certainly does have its benefits. One of those benefits is the opportunity to raise animals for meat, milk, and egg production, often in conjunction with a garden. Many have moved to the country for just this reason and many are finding that keeping the garden and livestock safe from predation can be a bit of a challenge.

I have raised mostly chickens for 9 years on my small farm and have experienced the shock of discovering some of them dead, obviously the result of an attack. But, once over the shock, a farmer must quickly discern the clues of the attack to determine what predator was most likely involved and how to immediately take care of the imminent threat to the rest of the farm.

When it comes to poultry there are three main predators to be concerned about. And frankly, taking the time to build a predator proof structure is neither complicated nor expensive.

The three most common poultry predators are the raccoon, the coyote, and the skunk. Less likely but also a potential threat is the weasel and birds of prey.

Raccoons are opportunistic animals that can destroy an entire hen house in one night if the door is left open. It is true that they will mostly eat human food, pet food, nuts, fruit, eggs and snakes. But they will also climb over the top of a chicken pen to catch a chicken. Typically they do not consume the entire bird. Raccoons are nocturnal so unless a wildlife camera is set in place, the raccoon will likely never be seen.

This is why it is so very important to make sure that chicken houses are equipped with a door that closes completely and can be latched shut.

Raccoons can also open doors and windows.

Skunks are less likely to attack grown chickens than they are to eat whatever eggs are left ungathered in the hen house. Skunks also tend to be more active in the later part of the day and into the night. 35TH YEAR George was a thoughtful husband. He wanted to give his wife something special for her birthday which was coming up soon. As he sat on the edge of the bed, he watched his wife turning back and forth and looking at herself in the mirror. “Reta,” he said, “What would you like for your birthday?”

His wife continued to look at herself and said, “I’d like to be six again.”

George knew just what to do. On the big day, he got up early and made his wife a bowl of Fruit Loops. Then he took her to an amusement park where they rode all the rides. Five hours later, Reta’s stomach felt upside down and her head was reeling. Never the less, George took her to McDonald’s and bought her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Next, it was a movie with popcorn, soda and her favorite candy.

As Reta wobbled into the house that evening and flopped on the bed, George asked her, “Well, Dear, what was it like to be six again?”

Reta looked up at him. Her expression changed. She said, “I meant my dress size!”

Where We Find the History, and the Story, Behind the Object

Everyone has objects that are dear to them: objects which have been handed down through the family, have survived a journey, been given by a loved one or kept to commemorate an important time. They hold meaning for their owners who tell stories about them based on their personal significance or importance to the family or community. For every object there is a story to tell, and the Bonner County History Museum houses a vast collection of curious and fascinating objects. These artifacts can help us visualize the past and see events as something tangible or relatable – in essence, objects are natural story-tellers.

The objects you will encounter on display in the museum’s newest exhibit were treasured by someone, or are linked to a historical moment in Bonner County, thus earning a place at the Museum. These unique objects tell the stories of our community, and beyond - from early settlers to today.

Two of these unique and remarkable objects are a violin and a degumbe, a type of cello, handcrafted by R.W. Parr in Edgemere in the 1920s. When R.W. and his wire Orra, along with five of their nine children, arrived in Edgemere in 1915, he was already an accomplished wood worker, but it was at the sawmill he built on the old Andrew Merritt property that R.W. began to craft his instruments. The first violin he ever crafted was made from a cedar fence post, and R.W. would often experiment with the tone and quality of various different woods.

Over the years he used locally grown spruce, pine, cedar, yew, black walnut, and several varieties of maple, but he preferred yew wood not only for the neck and scroll of stringed instruments, but also for the recurved bows he built as well. R.W.’s decision to craft musical instruments was no coincidence. Both he and his father were accomplished fiddlers, who often played for local dances and gatherings. R.W. taught all of his seven sons how to play the violin as well, and the family was often enlisted to provide the entertainment at events throughout North Idaho.

R.W. Parr could produce violins at the rate of about one per week, a remarkable speed considering both the primitive woodworking tools he had available as well as the incredible quality of workmanship he was able to achieve. Along with locally harvested wood, R.W. also used stick glue from England, and a hot amber flake glue to complete the construction of the violins. He also used an old foot-powered dental drill to make the “F” holes at the top of the violins.

During the time he created his instruments, between about 1900 -1936, the general school of thought was the varnish applied to the violin had an impact on the tonal quality of the instrument, which is why R.W. never finished his masterpieces, preferring to leave them unvarnished to protect the sound quality of the wood.

That didn’t mean he didn’t often experiment with various glues, resins, pitches, varnishes and shellacs. On at least two occasions, chemical explosions occurred lighting his violin shop on fire. But that never deterred him and R.W. continued to work to improve his craft throughout his time working in Edgemere. Each instrument he created was unique and thus R.W. numbered each of the over 350 violins, 5 violas and 12 cellos he handcrafted.

The museum owns violin number 348, the last R.W. Parr created in Edgemere before he moved his family to Pullman, Washington in 1936. Along with the number, it is dated April 10, 1936, R.W.’s 60th birthday, and inscribed “made in Edgemere, Idaho by R.W. Land Values: Where Are They Now?

Since then prices in the three northern counties of Idaho have stayed relatively flat. Below is a chart showing the median sales price for vacant 5-10 acre lots for the three northern Idaho counties from 2003 to May 31, 2017.

From the summarized information above one can determine that the price per acre drops as the acreage size of the land purchase increases. Considering the first half of both charts, one can see that the number of lots sold started to increase before the sales price of lots increased. In 2004 the number of 5-10 acre vacant land parcels began to decrease while the price of comparable parcels continued to increase for another two to three years, when prices began to fall. One could expect the price of property to start to increase two to three years after the number of lots begins to increase.

For the last few years it appears that the number of lots sold has begun to increase in Bonner and Kootenai County. However, the first five months of this year show a decline. This softening will likely keep prices stable going forward. Unlike housing, where there is only 4-6 months of inventory for sale, there is plenty of inventory of 5-10 acres lots for sale. At the current sales pace there are 1.3 years of inventory in Kootenai County and 2.2 years of inventory in Bonner County. In Boundary County there are 4.2 years of 5-10 acre vacant lot inventory. High inventory puts negative pressure on prices.

What about other vacant land lots of variable size? Previously the discussion has been based on 5-10 acre lots, and prices discussed are based on the lot regardless of size. Below is a table based on actual land sales regardless of parcel size for the previous 12 months ending May 31, 2017.
