My Perpetual Month of Promise

January is here and we have already had our first round of frigid weather. By this publishing we should be on our way out of it. January and February have been known to be kind of chilly as well so it’s probably a good idea to keep the warm gloves and coats, ice melt and sand bags at the ready. Winter has only just begun. However there is much to look forward to.

Today the snow is really piling up outside and the view from my office window over the golf course is really spectacular. It looks like a winter wonderland. Still, I find in my quiet moments I am longing for the soft, fertile soil I know exists beneath the snow in my garden. It calls to me all the time, rain or shine, summer or winter. The best way to deal with this is to begin planning for spring. And so I do because January is my planning month, my month of promise.

It is the month of promise for better weather in just 90 days. It’s when I look forward to more family gatherings out side, hikes, and maybe a little boat time out on the lake with my husband. It is the time to plan for something new to try, and the promise that enjoyment comes in the experience for me, not necessarily in a success.

In this issue of the Round Up we have one of the best things about spring - George’s Annual Tree & Shrub Sale list over on page 3. This list always helps me plan as I, along with scores of you, try to find space for just one more thing in the garden. I am really looking forward to this sale!

Amber has been working on the garden seed order for this year. We expect it to arrive in February, a little later than usual but we, like many other businesses, have had to get used to the new normal of shipping schedules. We will let you know as soon as the seeds arrive.

The Bonner County Gardeners are always looking for new members to join them. You can find out more about this group over on page 10 and they have a new project in the works. I have spent time with this bunch of great folks. If you love to garden, this is a possible connection for you.

While many of us are weary of the subject of COVID it remains with us. Dr. Duebendorfer has written some helpful information on the subject. Find her article over on page12. And as always we have the list of Bonner and Boundary County Extension classes coming up over the next couple of months so check that list out.

I think I am going to pull the seed box out this week and take inventory. I have been putting it off because a lot of the seeds I have collected came from people whom passed last year. The process will be full of both memories and plans for the season to come, perhaps how to best remember these people. Maybe it will be through the perpetual blooming of perennials placed for remembrance and the promise of a better year to come.

Pressure Canning, $10 Wednesday, January 19, 1-4pm Learn how to safely make and preserve low-acid foods at home such as vegetables, meats, dried beans, and mixed foods. Freeze Drying Class, $10 Wednesday, January 26, 1-2:30pm Want to learn about freeze dryers designed for home use? This is the class for you! Bird Watching as a Winter Sport

Welcome to January, an excellent bird watching month. So far this has been just about the perfect winter. I hope you are able to enjoy it.

When I was growing up I spent quite a bit of time at my Grama Opal and Grampa Pete’s home. They lived barely a half mile up the road from our farm. It was a quick walk along the road for sure. But the added adventure of trying to get there through the woods with no path, that was far more fun. There were no cell phones back in those days so Mom would call grama to make sure we had arrived.

My grandparents had a wildlife book that mesmerized me for hours.

It is difficult to let go of the image of the wide open Cottonmouth viper mouth, ready to conquer some unsuspecting prey. Yikes! Other pages in the book were far less frightening, like images of deer, squirrels, and birds. The bird photos were ok, if you like that sort of thing. But at 10 years old I was not the least bit interested. That non nonchalance was going to change over time.

Fast forward 50 years.

Winter bird watching has become one of my favorite winter sports.

Certainly one can provide food and suet and watch comfortably from the warmth of the living room as birds arrive to feast. But there is a good deal going on out in the forest as well. This is a great time of the year to put on the cross country skis or snowshoes and venture out to observe birds beyond the feeder.

Black Capped Chickadees, Chestnut Chickadees, Nuthatches, Varioles, House Finches, Sparrows and Juncos are common to see in January. If you are able to get outside near a bird feeder it is possible to become familiar with the various bird voices and languages.

By the time spring comes new species will begin to arrive in the forest and at the bird feeder. Each year I look for the Mountain Bluebirds, The Western Tanager, and the Cedar Waxwing. I watch for the Waxwing because it, along with the Robin, is partial to my Rainier cherry crop.

Getting started with bird watching is easy and inexpensive. It is as simple as looking on line to see what birds commonly winter in the northwest. Decide what birds you would like to attract to your yard for watching and then find out what each species likes to eat. Provide the selected bird food in squirrel proof feeders along with a suet ball or brick inside a suet feeder. You can find both at The CO-OP. It may take a couple of days for the show to begin but when it does be ready with your bird book and binoculars. And be careful for a potential negative development.

Before long you may find yourself choosing to bird watch rather than fold laundry, clean the house, grocery shop or organize the garage.

This is a risk all bird watchers must embrace.

After being a Toastmaster member for only a year, I had the confidence to share my experiences publicly by speaking to several non-Toastmaster organizations, ranging from a university Economics class to a venture capital roundtable, highlighting my 8 years of work in improving healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa. I wish I had joined Toastmasters much earlier in my life. That said, it is never too late to share your stories!

Toastmasters will help you build the skills and confidence to express yourself in any situation. In addition to public speaking, I have found that Toastmasters improves interpersonal communication skills and confidence when I am in formal or informal group settings.

Communication is one of the most important leadership skills to learn. As an example, storytelling and the use of humor can be an excellent means of getting your point across.

We learn through structured meetings and through many paths that we can select online.

Pathways is the new Toastmasters educational program. Although Toastmasters International has been in existence for 98 years, Pathways brings new technology to communication, such as elective projects in the Presentation Mastery Path, which include: Create a Podcast, Creating Effective Visual Aids, Building a Social Media Presence, and Public Relations Strategies. As a part of completing any of these projects, the Toastmaster member prepares and delivers a speech to their Club.

Pathways currently offers 11 Paths that you can choose from when you become a member. These collectively embed over 300 competencies! Whether you choose Presentation Mastery, Effective Coaching, Persuasive Influence, Strategic Relationships, or other paths, they each have organized project content. Each Path has 5 levels and 3-4 projects per level. As you complete each project online and complete the speech to your club, the completion details are automatically sent to the Club’s Vice President of Education for acknowledgement.

Weed of the Month : Tribulus terrestrus - Puncturevine

The dead of winter is always the best time to bolster education. Weed control professionals spend this valuable time immersed in research in order to build up our programs by learning about herbicide & biocontrol developments, new control techniques, new invasive species, grant opportunities, changes to applicable state and federal rules and anything else that comes up. We also provide education to the public via seminars, curriculum based classes, articles and meetings (one-on-one and group settings). This is a great time for landowners to gather new ideas and knowledge, and to use that information in planning your attack for the upcoming field season. Given the nature of where we live, everyone gets busier once the weather turns nice, so off-season preparation is ideal. If weed control action is something that you know your property will need in the coming year, feel free to reach out if you would like assistance developing a plan. You may need herbicide (or other management) recommendations, you may need info on application equipment, you may want to take advantage of cost share assistance…you get the idea. Things like site visits and aid with weed identification obviously needs to wait until the growing season, but the more that can be planned ahead of time, the better. Even if it’s just a hand written outline with a few bullet points. I’m always happy to help.

Weed of the month is Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris). This invader is a mat forming annual on the Idaho Noxious Weed List. Puncturevine can be a summer or winter annual that produces several flushes throughout the season if conditions are right. The seeds need warm temperatures to germinate, but they can handle nearly any soil type. Leaves are hairy with an opposite structure and the stems sprawl out, creating mats. The flowers are 5-petalled and pale yellow in color. The fruiting bodies are hard, spiny burs, and they’re a pain…literally! It’s native to the Mediterranean region and was unintentionally introduced to North America by European settlers. Burs [containing the seeds] hitchhiked over here on sheep wool, which they easily latch on to.

Given the nature of spread, the little buggers also grab hold on to footwear, clothing, equipment tracks/tires and the fur or feathers of any animal that crosses its path. Puncturevine mostly infests trails, roadsides, parking areas and waste areas—but if does find its way into a pasture or hay crop, the fruiting bodies can cause oral injuries to livestock. It poses a safety issue with young children and small pets if they get into a nearby patch, in addition to the burs being sharp and rigid enough to puncture bicycle tires. In areas of widespread infestations, it’s not uncommon to come across signage alerting cyclists to be vigilant about staying on paved portions of pathways due to Puncturevine; Boise is one of those areas. Luckily, none has been found in Bonner County as of yet, although there is some in Kootenai County. Just last year it was discovered in Boundary County for the first time in an industrial parking lot—contaminated equipment most likely carried it there.

Boundary County achieved eradication of the lone infestation at last check. We have it on our EDRR (early detection, rapid response) watch list in Bonner County, as an unfortunate arrival is plausible. We have a lot of new residents arriving from areas where Puncturevine infestation levels are high. Additionally, the peak tourist season coincides with the time of year when many invasive weeds go to seed. All it would take is an outdoor recreationalist getting a bur wedged in the tread of their hiking boots (from as nearby as Spokane or Post Falls), then visiting our area to go for a hike on a popular trail like Gold Hill or Mickinnick for us to have a new issue on our hands with high risk for spread. It’s also worth noting that Puncturevine thrives during hot summers, so if we get another one of those…

My primary push is for prevention; use a boot brush between hikes, and wash ATVs & equipment between sites. Let’s keep the carpet of thorns out of Bonner County! My next push is for prompt notification if you find, or suspect, an infestation of Puncturevine. A confirmed infestation would automatically be an EDRR situation where my department would put the wheels in motion to get it treated right away.

The Bonner County Gardeners Association will begin the 2022 Membership Course at the end of January. The course is limited to 12 this year. BCGA is collaborating on a new project, called the City Nature Challenge. This challenge is an effort to document as many wildlife species as possible during a four day period, April 29 to May 3, 2022 in towns and cities around the world. The study will assist in determining diversity of animals and plants in our midst, and will help connect people to our environment. The Challenge is to get as many people as possible involved in a friendly competition. A trophy will reward the winning town. For more information, go to www.inaturalist.org. Growing Onions Fropm Seed Onions are a staple in our kitchen; they are an ingredient in most dishes that we prepare. Running out of onions is a catastrophe, a trip to the store no matter what the weather . This year, an abundance of lovely onions, several varieties, allows many months of onion security.

We grew them from seed.

There are three ways to grow onions: from seed, green plants, or bulb sets. Onions from seed must be started very early, up to 12 weeks before planting out. Onion seeds don’t maintain their viability for long, so use fresh seed for best results. If you are itching to start gardening in January, here is your opportunity. The earlier one plants the seeds, the larger the resulting bulbs will be.

An advantage of starting onions from seed is that one has more of a selection of varieties. When choosing, keep in mind that onions are sensitive to latitude. Growing at our latitude requires long day varieties for best results. To start onions inside from seed, fill sterilized pots

with a good quality seed starting potting soil, moisten it well, and plant the seeds about ¼ inch deep, and about ½ inch apart. I cover the pot with a plastic bag to maintain humidity and set them in a South facing window or under a light. The best temperature for germination is from 65 degrees to 85 degrees; they should sprout within a week. Keep them moist.

When the baby plants grow tall enough to start drooping, give them a “haircut,” and remove about 1/3 of the tops. You can use these trimmings in a salad. Do not rush to plant these babies in the garden. Wait until the soil temperatures are over 50 degrees, in May. If the temperature drops to below 50 degrees for a period of time, the onions may “vernalize,” which means they act like we have returned to a colder season and now they must bolt to seed. Onions have shallow roots, so be sure to provide a rich soil for them. Add plenty of compost when planting out, and plant the little plants about 4” apart for larger varieties. If you plant them closer, you can thin them and use the pulled plants as green onions. Onions don’t like competition, so keep them weeded, and give them plenty of water. A good mulch is useful for both these goals. In August or early September, the tops of the plants will start falling over, which is a sign that the onions are maturing. You can start pulling them when most of the tops are down.

Cure them in a warm dry place for at least a week—I like a longer curing time. Some say to cure them in the sun, but with hot weather, shade seems to work better. When the tops are dry and the outer part

Winter Horse Activities- Minus the Equine By Samantha Harvey

The weather may be limiting horse activities, but there are still plenty of options to keep you busy and prepare for the upcoming riding season.

Tack- Assess, Inspect, Clean Winter is a great time to sort, purge, and maintain tack items. Buying horse items can quickly evolve into a collection of many, and rarely is the time set aside to prioritize the needed maintenance to make them last.

I suggest doing at least a semi-annual tack safety review. Check for cracked leather, loose or missing stitching, overstretched elastic (such as on girths,) unevenly stretched stirrup leathers, uneven wear spots, and that buckles or snaps are functioning.

The dramatic seasons in the Pacific Northwest can take a toll on leather items. Assess that your tack storage area has air circulation, limits moisture exposure, and minimizes drastic temperature changes.

Even if infrequently used, leather still needs regular care.

Tack cleaning and maintenance method(s) may take some experimenting before settling on a preferred approach. Various soaps, oils, and creams can be used as cleansers and conditioners to protect the leather.

Always place absorbent material- such as newspaper or old towels, etc. where ever you will be tack cleaning. Use soft sponges or cloth (old t-shirts are great) to clean the leather, absorb extra oils, and not create accidental scratches. Old toothbrushes are great for cleaning hard-to-reach stitching.

Begin by applying a small amount of product to prevent over-saturating the leather. Allow time for absorption of the product before adding another coat. The quality, use, and type of leather may require different cleaning methods and an assortment of products.

Any material items such as saddle pads, blankets, shipping boots, neoprene protective boots, polo wraps, cotton string cinches, cotton lead ropes, etc., will need washing. Sores on the horse’s skin often occur from the ill-fitting and dirty tack.

Use cold water to wash or soak, and check the type of material before using mild soap (skip if it is mohair or wool) to prevent potential skin irritation to the horse. I prefer to air dry most items to avoid potential shrinkage/damage.

Bits can accumulate a thick build-up of saliva and debris. Soak them in warm water to loosen foreign matter (do not use any soap), and the unwanted material will easily wipe off with a soft sponge.

Assess the horse’s current feed/exercise program The animal’s diet is usually based on human convenience rather than designed for the individual equine. Semi-annual assessments of the horse help evaluate the quality of roughage, quantity/frequency/amount, exercise, age, and general health. Notice changes in the horse’s weight, manure, water intake, appetite, and energy levels. The health of the coat and hooves, or sudden changes in behavior, can reflect dietary issues and potential health concerns.

Keep records of any changes in the horse’s weight, adjustments/ changes in feed, health issues, etc. This great tool helps you recognize if potential seasonal dietary changes are needed. Take profile, front and rear pictures for future reference.

Plan for the Future Winter can drag on, and when warmer temperatures finally arrive, folks are often inundated with spring clean-up, limiting time spent with the horse. Every year, I hear riders discussing how quickly spring and summer pass without accomplishing their riding goals.

Even if currently limited to minimal or no riding, this is an opportunity to assess your short and long-term horsemanship and riding goals.

Take time and write down realistic goals. What obstacles or challenges are preventing you from achieving them? Pinpoint what continued education or experiences do you and your horse need, to improve current skill-sets to work towards success? What are indoor learning options sans the horse to increase your equine knowledge?

If interested, budget to partake in a horsemanship clinic, attend a competition, or participate in a packing trip. It never is too early to start planning. Even if “life happens” and you have to deviate from or adjust your initial goal(s), you will be better prepared to do so by early planning.

Rider Physical Shape, Awareness, and Focus Equine enthusiasts frequently fixate on the horse’s condition and exercise program but rarely look at their personal health. Riding is not about sheer physical strength or stamina.

Irrelevant of their age or experience, many riders have limited mobility.

Tight hip flexors and hamstrings, lacking awareness of and balance in their sit bones fatigued from inconsistent breathing patterns (holding breath when anxious,) rigidity in the neck/shoulders/hands, and are often in a state of mental distraction. Each of these unintentional and unwanted behaviors influences the quality, or lack of, communication between the human and horse.

Wintertime is an opportunity for refining body awareness. Indoor activities can include gentle daily stretching, the reawakening of fascia (affects your muscles), and refining mental focus. A variety of low-impact mobility exercises, conditioning regimes, and intentional focus exercises can improve the ability to adapt, remain physically balanced, improve coordination, and maintain cognitive presence. By doing so improves having independent aids, and an improved timing of intentional communication with the horse.

As with most things in life, there is always the option to improve.

Prioritizing ongoing commitment to first improving oneself increases the fulfillment of time spent with the horse, irrelevant of the initial goal.

Horsemanship is a journey, not a destination.

ment. Timely prescription nebulized Albuterol and steroids, Doxycycline, and/or anti-histamines by a qualified practitioner become necessary now. Those with asthma, COPD, or emphysema should be on inhalers/nebulizers, steroids, and doxycycline right from the beginning.

At this point, oxygen prescription and prone position will be essential.

It is important to track oxygen saturation, as it can drop without perceptible symptoms or cause mental disturbance and fatigue. Previous practice with breathing exercises will now bear fruit.

Around day 14, the virus may begin to cause clotting and major organ damage, indicating higher aspirin doses or other anti-coagulant prescriptions. Severe chest heaviness and low or rapidly dropping O2 rates need to be evaluated at this point with EKG’s, X-rays, and labs.

Sometime around day 30, death will be more of a reality if symptoms continue to be worse, at which point the decision has to be made whether to go to hospital or call hospice. If you have multiple risk factors with complications already and have lived a full life, you might seriously consider hospice care. Comfort medicines (morphine and Lorazopam) and adapted natural support make that transition entirely possible.

In closing, I would like to use an analogy from a recent cross-county ski trip, where fluffy and quite deep snow caused difficulty breathing and sweating. Listening to my body I slowed down, pacing myself according to my breath, so that I could absorb the beauty around me and enjoy the ski despite the difficulty. I kept going until the top, knowing that downhill was going to be easier, back home to familiar territory – exhausted but strengthened and inspired through my adventure.

Similarly, getting sick provides opportunity to slow down to listen to your body and pace yourself, i.e., rest. Conscious nose breathing facilitates not only slowing down, but also increases oxygenation. Fever and sweating are the healthy body’s response to fight the virus, doing housecleaning and strengthening the immune system in the process.

Rather than suppressing this process with symptomatic relief, your body can be supported with fever hydrotherapy, liquid diet, and supplements, enabling it to keep trudging uphill according to your capacity.

You know that at the top you will either face your mortality or it will go “downhill” to familiar, yet healthier territory. What an opportunity to be present without any external distractions, face your mortality, evaluate what is really important for you, and connect with a higher power – a kind of self-emptying that may be difficult but perhaps in a way inspiring.

Along that vein I would like to publicly acknowledge the few “COVID-19 educated” practitioners in town who have been willing to actively treat and support more severe COVID-19 cases at home - including controversial Ivermectin prescriptions. My hope is that these articles will motivate more practitioners to step forward as it is not too late to prevent more hospitalizations and deaths by combining both vaccinations and out-patient treatments. I also hope that they might inspire more tolerance and interest for views that might not fit into your own narrative, in the process learning something new. Continued on Page 13

I have received lots of positive feedback about my COVID-19 articles (www.aspenwellspring.substack.com) - mostly from those critical about the vaccines, though somebody recently refused to post my blog reference on her social media for not being enough anti-vaccination. On the other extreme, those who think getting the vaccine is the only kind and right thing to do, have mostly been silent. I find that quite disappointing as both of these stances are avoiding COVID-19 reality and preventing possible dialogue. I hope to facilitate that middle ground with these articles and invite you to give me constructive feedback at aspenwellspring@substack.com.

As I described in my last posted article, the vast majority of COVID-19 deaths are in those over 70 with underlying conditions (1). A study in BMC Geriatrics (2) found a 37.5% significantly higher COVID-19 mortality rate in the over 80 versus 65-70 year-old group, asserting that besides chronological age, long-term residence in nursing homes and secondarily comorbidities are worse or equal risk factors in the older group. Only 1% of COVID-19 deaths happen in the “healthy” (1) – meaning without obvious disease. This percentage is even less for those truly healthy and fit regardless of age.

However, while this virus looks and acts very much like a strong flu for most people, in the vulnerable, COVID-19 can turn cause critical illness in unpredictable ways by triggering an exaggerated inflammatory and blood-clotting response, leading to multiple organ failure. Even the less severe Omicron variant, likely more air born (3), is already causing significantly higher hospitalizations and deaths just by the sheer number of sick.

I want to emphasize that even “mild” infections can actually be quite brutal. A Nature journal article (4) notes an average duration of fever, headaches, and musculoskeletal pain of 8 days, with 13% of people develop breathing difficulties for an average of 20 days. There is nothing more frightening than intense tightening in the chest, air hunger, difficulty breathing, breathlessness, and a feeling of suffocation.

Whether you are vulnerable or not, please do evaluate whether you have enough resources and help at home in case you should get sick with COVID-19. Are you willing to be sick with proper support or do you want to avoid it at all cost? Do you have a primary health care provider who is able to support you in the treatment of your choice?

Waiting to call the hospital once you are really sick will be too late as the best time to intervene is from day 1-5 of symptoms onset! It is not too late to implement previously discussed supportive measures and make a plan.

Depending on how you answered above questions you might want to consider getting vaccinated. I will cover potential side-effects and benefits in a later article, but for now please know, that if you are older, especially above 70, and have 1 or more risk factors, your chances of getting hospitalized and dying from COVID-19 are way higher than from any vaccine side-effects. Please let go of any ideological conviction and really evaluate this option.

If you are ok risking severe COVID-19 infection and are confident in supporting your body to deal with it despite vulnerabilities, you might want to print out posted summaries of immune support, treatment options, symptom tracker, and fever hydrotherapy. Also make sure to have a pulse oximeter on hand. Throughout this time, natural support including fever hydro therapy, liquid diet, basic and possibly new homeopathics/supplements/herbs according to symptom presentation and practitioner discretion, continues to be important.

Prescription as well as natural antiviral treatment is most effective during the first 5 days, as it prevents the virus from entering into and multiplying inside the cells.

If you are high risk, please do consider Ivermectin - despite all the bad press. I was on the fence with this one for a long time as I have no prescribing experience and have had good results with the naturopathic approach.

However, diving into the data (6, 7) and talking to practitioners who have used it clinically during the pandemic, I can now confidently support its use in the context of a larger supplement protocol and under supervision.

Market information as of December 23, 2021 Lumber is making another run to higher ground and currently sits around $1,100/Mbf. Just a few months ago it was hovering around $500/Mbf. Again, the old adage of supply and demand is at play. When lumber prices fell demand picked up as more do-it-yourselfers entered the market and wholesale yards added inventory.

Then the lumber supply pipeline started constricting as the hang over from a bad Northwest fire season took effect, and more recently, record rainfall hit British Columbia, a region that produces significant lumber. The resulting floods and mudslides from the heavy rain destroyed transportation routes, which caused mayhem in the wood products supply chain. Consequently, lumber supplies became tight as demand increased and lumber prices went up.

Now to the local log market. Well, as you can see from the above prices, only modest changes. Most mill yards contain acceptable log inventories for this time of year, so there has been little incentive to increase prices. Again, supply and demand dynamics.

With current mill inventories in mind, I’m hard pressed to see much of a log-price change in the near future.

Darning Socks - a tried and true old fashioned way to save money and keep your good socks for another season

Have you seen the price of wool socks?!? The price of ANY socks made from natural fibers like cotton or wool is off the charts this year. It is not uncommon to find a two pack of men’s or women’s wool socks closing in on $20. For an individual this expense may be manageable. But for a family these prices can be a challenge. So this may be the right time to go old school and pick up a skill set that has largely faded into the annals of country living lore - sock darning.

Darning is a sewing technique for repairing holes or worn areas in fabric or knitting using needle and thread alone. It is often done by hand, but it is also possible to darn with a sewing machine. Hand darning employs the darning stitch, a simple running stitch in which the thread is “woven” in rows along the grain of the fabric, with the stitcher reversing direction at the end of each row, and then filling in the framework thus created, as if weaving. Darning is a traditional method for repairing fabric damage or holes that do not run along a seam, and where patching is impractical or would create discomfort for the wearer, such as on the heel of a sock.* I learned to darn socks when I was a teenager because my Dad had several pair of wool socks that needed repair. The only thing wrong with them was a hole in the toe or the heel. Wool and wool blend socks were not terribly expensive but that money was hard earned and could be spent better elsewhere. That’s farm life for you.

During the COVID pandemic of 2020 our life changed and I found myself with more time to sew than before. While I certainly got all the baby quilts done I discovered the basket of cotton and wool socks that needed repair. So I decided to tackle this project as well. The needles for darning were already in my kit, but not the heavier cotton thread I needed. I found it at Walmart but you could probably also find it at a local yarn shop as well.

Getting started is fairly easy: darning needle, heavy darning thread, and a darning surface of some sort to hold the sock in place while weaving the patch. Some people use darning eggs or a wooden darning mushroom or preserved gourd. All will work but I prefer a small glass pint canning jar. This is because I can pull the sock tight over the jar and stuff the top of the sock into the jar opening to keep it stable during the weaving process.

Above is an image from Hobby Farms Magazine*, a perfect example of what a strong darning should look like. The patch weaves the thread into the good part of the sock well beyond the hole edge. The weave patch begins beyond the edge of the hole and works toward and through the hole.
