“Music is my life and I still have to keep the momentum going from the past sixty years I love to communicate and unite people. Doing nothing is not my goal,” says 86-year-old entrepreneur and cofounder of VP Records Patricia ‘Miss Pat’ Chin, as she and her team prepare for International Record Store Day 2024 on April 20 across the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia

International Record Store Day originated in the United States in 2007 and is celebrated in countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan

The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of record stores globally to celebrate the culture of independently owned record stores and the vinyl record culture that has brought these stores into a new era of relevance

A highlight of the day is the issuing of special vinyl releases along with other promotional offerings to mark the occasion, which are only available at participating stores

Miss Pat is eagerly anticipating VP Records’ annual Record Store Day celebration, which will take place this Saturday from 12 noon to 6 pm at their flagship store in Jamaica Queens and at their retail store in Miramar Florida Special guests for

the day at the Jamaica Queens event will be VP recording artist Romain Virgo

shine a light on the sound system and vinyl culture, showing everyone that our music is alive and well, even with all the stages that we have passed through ”

At an age when many of her peers are enjoying retirement and slowing down, the tireless Miss Pat smilingly asserts that none of that is on her agenda

Miss Pat and her late husband Vincent Chin together founded VP Records in New York in 1979 They

“I don’t think of myself as retired at all. I still have work to do and I still have my ears to the streets. I’ve been through it all, from mento, ska, to rocksteady, reggae, dancehall, and dub, and I’ve never lost track of the different trends in the music. My plan is to keep going and to keep preserving our musical legacy for as long as I can” – Chin

had immigrated to the USA from Jamaica having run a small record store, Randy’s Record Mart, and a recording studio, Studio 17, for some 20 years in downtown Kingston

From a tiny retail outlet on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, VP Records has grown to become the largest independent reggae label and distributor of Caribbean music in the world

She believes that entrepreneurship was in her DNA, as she started her own business during childhood while growing up in Kingston as the eldest of three children born to her Chinese mother and Indian father

While at Alpha Girls School, she asked her father to buy her some

rubber bands and marbles, popular novelty items amongst her schoolmates at the time, and, exhibiting her enterprising entrepreneurial spirit, she sold them at lunchtime

“Looking back,” says Miss Pat today, “Maybe that’s how my business sense began to develop ” Her perseverance was instrumental to the eventual success of VP Records, which proudly boasts a roster of present and past artists that includes many of the most popular reggae and dancehall stars of all time including Beres Hammond, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Spice, Lady Saw, Morgan Heritage, and Tanya Stephens Many of them have become her close friends

Having survived and thrived amidst early professional challenges, as well as overcoming several personal tragedies including the loss of her husband Vincent, two sons, and a grandson, Miss Pat continues to persevere, determined to make a difference

In 2006, the government of Jamaica awarded her the prestigious Order of Distinction (OD) in recognition of her contribution to Jamaican music and culture, and 2021 she published her memoir, Miss Pat- My Reggae Music Journey She is also the first woman to have received the American Association of Independent Music Lifetime Achievement Award

Jamaican police issuing more tickets than before

At the recent University of Technology (Utech), Western Jamaica Campus Business Conference held at Sandals Montego Bay in St James on April 11, Hon Dr Horace Chang, Minister of National Security, delivered news regarding the island’s traffic ticketing system

Dr Chang expressed satisfaction with the performance of the new digitized system, highlighting an increase in tickets issued by the police compared to the same period last year

Dr Chang revealed that since the beginning of this year, law enforcement has been proactive in ticket issuance, surpassing the numbers recorded during the corresponding timeframe in the previous year

This surge in ticketing activity, according to the Minister, underscores the dedication of the police force to its responsibilities and is anticipated to contribute to the reduction of road accidents

The implementation of the end-toend digitized ticketing system, which went live in February of the previous year, has streamlined the process of issuing tickets

Utilizing handheld devices, officers can promptly generate tickets, ensuring immediate accessibility of information to pertinent stakeholders

Moreover, motorists benefit from receiving both a physical ticket and an electronic copy via email

The introduction of the Traffic Ticket Web lookup portal further empowers motorists by allowing them to track the status of their tickets, access records, and prepare for legal proceedings

Dr Chang emphasized the government’s commitment to

modernizing law enforcement through digitization, with the aim of enhancing efficiency and user experience for both officers and the public

The Minister highlighted that Jamaica’s progress in this area has garnered attention regionally, serving as an inspiration for other police forces to embrace digital solutions

Beyond the ticketing system, Jamaica’s police force has embarked on a comprehensive digitization journey

The implementation of the Station Records Management System in 2022 marks a significant milestone in this endeavor, enabling electronic recording of reports, complaints, and administrative entries

This transition from manual entry systems, represented by the traditional ‘big books,’ enhances the accuracy and accessibility of critical information

Dr Chang commended the effective implementation of digitization efforts at

the recently opened Hopewell Police Station in Hanover, citing it as a prime example of the system’s benefits in the western region

The UTech Western Jamaica Campus Business Conference, organized by the 2023-2024 Seminar Group, centered around the theme ‘Digital Transformation and Workforce Readiness ’

Throughout the event, business leaders and stakeholders shared insights and perspectives on navigating the digital landscape and preparing the workforce for the evolving demands of the modern era

Seven babies die from bacterial infection at Trinidad hospital

Seven babies have died in four days from a bacterial infection at the Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad, according to the island’s health authorities

The Port of Spain General Hospital is the main health care facility in the Trinidad capital

The outbreak occurred at the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital, according to a release from the country’s North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA), responsible for the hospital’s management

In a statement on Thursday night, the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) said the deaths occurred during the period April 4 -7

“It is with profound sadness that the NWRHA confirms that during this time, some of the very premature neonatal babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Port of Spain General Hospital succumbed to the infection

“Laboratory investigations revealed the presence of three different organisms serratia marcesens, ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Klebsiella aerogenes all known to pose significant risks to vulnerable neonates

“Despite administering high-dose antibiotics and providing advanced and intensive cardio-respiratory support, the infection claimed the lives of some of these preterm babies, all weighing under 1500 grams and less than 32 weeks gestational age ”

The NWRHA said that the medical team, recognizing the severity of the situation, immediately initiated infectious diseases and control protocols for the treatment of lateonset neonatal sepsis, a condition known for its rapid onset and potentially devastating consequences

The ward has been sprayed and the outbreak is contained, said the NWRHA

“In response to this heartbreaking situation, the NICU was immediately closed to new admissions to prevent further transmission of the infection and healthy babies were discharged

“Since April 7th, no new infection has been reported, indicating the effectiveness of these internal measures in halting the spread of the bacteria,” the NWRHA said

Is it too late to fix the Jamaican Diaspora?

Older Jamaicans, raised in Jamaica may be familiar with the saying: “Wha gaan bad a mawning, caan come good a eveling ” (What began badly cannot be corrected later) This saying seems to describe the current challenges surrounding the Jamaican diaspora and its relationship with the Jamaican government.

There was much anticipation in 2004 when the then Jamaican government extended an invitation to Jamaicans living overseas to attend the inaugural Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Kingston, Jamaica

In South Florida, then Jamaican Consul General to the Southern U S , Ricardo Allicock, was instrumental in apprising those from the region who were invited to experience what the conference was all about, especially as some people didn't fully understand what the Jamaican diaspora meant

The inaugural conference was a very exciting, well-promoted, very well-attended affair Hundreds of Jamaicans living mostly in the USA, U K , and Canada attended the conference The Jamaican Conference Center was packed to capacity, and the atmosphere was largely positive as the government laid out plans to engage the diaspora formally and actively in national development

But the sense of euphoria wasn't lost on everyone Over lunch, during the penultimate day of the conference, a learned Jamaican educator from the diaspora commented to organizers of the conference, and for the formal relationship between Jamaica and its diaspora, that he

couldn't help feeling “the cart was pulling the horse ” Expanding his comments, the educator said he felt the conference should have been initiated and hosted by a Jamaican diaspora organization within the diaspora, not by the Jamaican government He further expressed concern about the functions of the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board (now Global Jamaica Diaspora Council - GJDC) that was announced during the conference The educator, supported by other members of the diaspora, were of the opinion a diaspora board controlled by and reporting to the Jamaican government, was not really representative of the diaspora and its needs How prophetic were these opinions?

That day the organizers present subtly criticized the diaspora for lack of initiative to establish an autonomous Jamaican diaspora organization within the diaspora “The diaspora hasn't done anything about building an organization in the diaspora, so the Jamaican government has taken the initiative,” an organizer said He also emphasized the role of the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board was primarily advisory in nature, and nothing stopped the diaspora from forming an autonomous organization and board that addressed the interests of the diaspora, and liaised with the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board and the Jamaican government

Since June 2004, attempts to build such an autonomous Jamaican diaspora organization have been fraught with challenges and criticisms Today, 20 years later, on the eve of the 10th biennial conference, the problems and challenges seem to have escalated A new group has emerged challenging the Jamaican government's attempt to control and manage the diaspora

This new group, which has no formal name, but consists of the leadership of the Jamaica Diaspora Crime Prevention and Intervention and Prevention Task Force, has been in dispute with

the Jamaican government for months The group is dissatisfied over what it regards as the government's “failure to effectively manage crime, violence and corruption in Jamaica ”

The leadership of the group has sought an audience with the government to discuss its concerns, without success Some months ago, they sent a letter to Jamaica's ambassador to the US requesting an audience with her but got no response After this snob, the group held a number of protest rallies including in Miami

With the 10th biennial conference set for June, the group has also announced and advertised its own “1st Biennial Diaspora Conference” coinciding with the dates of the Jamaican conference This parallel conference plans focus on issues of crime, violence, corruption, and healthcare

Not surprisingly, the Jamaican government has taken umbrage to this parallel conference, particularly with the protest group promoting its conference as being held in association with the GJDC

The protest diaspora group has moved to register its Global Jamaica Diaspora Council as a Florida organization, with plans to do so in other states, and with the IRS

In fact, the move to register the GJDC as an organization is filling an open void Despite several previous recommendations to register the GJDC as a US organization, that was never done

In recent years, several groups emerged within the diaspora, with different missions that would best be addressed by a centralized autonomous diaspora organization Groups like the Jamaica Diaspora Taskforce Action Network (JDTAN) based in South Florida worked to support several areas in Jamaica Others like Jamaica Diaspora Southern USA, also based in South Florida haven't succeeded in their ambitious missions However, none of these

Florida Emerges as Prime Destination for Migrants Under Biden's Parole Program

A recent report from the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies sheds light on Florida's rising status as a primary destination for migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua who have been accepted into President Biden's humanitarian parole program According to the report, based on analysis of the latest U S Customs and Border Protection data, approximately 326,000 migrants from these four countries have arrived at airports in Florida over the past year

The data underscores Florida's significant appeal to migrants, with 84% of them choosing the Sunshine State over other cities like Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta This preference aligns with the state's status as home to the largest Haitian, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan, and Cuban communities in the U S Todd Bensman, a Senior National Security Fellow at CIS and author of the report, emphasizes the importance of public awareness regarding the destinations of these flights

“Public knowledge of where these flights deliver migrants should matter to local, state, and national leaders in cities struggling with migrant influxes, who could use the information to financially plan for their care, or petition the federal government to stop the flights,” writes Bensman

He argues that local, state, and national leaders could utilize this information to better plan and allocate resources for the care of migrants, or to engage in legal action against the federal government regarding the parole programs

Critics, particularly from right-leaning circles, view these parole programs with skepticism, advocating for stricter immigration

Jamaica’s Chief Justice announces training programs to enhance judiciary leadership

In a strategic move aimed at fortifying the leadership core of Jamaica’s Judiciary, Chief Justice Hon. Bryan Sykes has unveiled plans to introduce comprehensive training programs

These initiatives form part of the Judiciary’s recently launched Strategic Business Plan spanning from 2024 to 2028

Set to be implemented by 2025, these training endeavors, spearheaded by the Court Administration Division (CAD) in collaboration with various sector stakeholders, will cater to a spectrum of judicial officers

Judges, registrars, board administrators, and supervisors will undergo specialized

training to enhance their capacities in effectively managing the nation’s courts Speaking at the official launch of the strategic plan on Wednesday (April 10) at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St Andrew, Justice Sykes outlined impending structural changes within the CAD

These alterations aim to bolster support for internal stakeholders and streamline operational efficiency

In a bid to ensure the leadership of the courts is adequately equipped to fulfill their mandates, Justice Sykes emphasized leveraging training opportunities provided by external entities such as the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF)

He underscored the importance of tapping into the extensive training expertise of the military to tailor leadership development initiatives to the specific needs of the judiciary

Justice Sykes highlighted the importance of nurturing strategic thinking capabilities among judges and court officers

By empowering them to analyze and contribute to matters of national significance, the judiciary aims to proactively engage in shaping policies and frameworks

This proactive stance includes considerations for potential developments such as the proposed elevation of Portmore to the status of a parish, requiring foresight in anticipating legal service needs and infrastructure requirements

policies They argue that the Biden administration's approach has encouraged increased migration and strained border resources

The Biden administration, on the other hand, defends its actions, attributing the surge in migration to broader global factors driving people to seek refuge The humanitarian parole program was initiated over a year ago to address the crisis at the U S -Mexico border, initially focusing on migrants from Venezuela before expanding to include those from other countries

With record numbers of asylum seekers and undocumented migrants overwhelming immigration authorities and border communi-

ties, the administration has faced mounting pressure to address the situation The parole program, which requires migrants to have a financial sponsor in the U S and to enter through an American airport, has admitted approximately 30,000 individuals per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela

Republicans have been vocal critics of the program, accusing the administration of bypassing immigration laws and admitting individuals who would not otherwise qualify for legal residency Senator Rick Scott, in particular, has condemned the program, seizing on the report to criticize both the administration and his Democratic challenger, Debbie MucarselPowell

"While Joe Biden and Democrats claim the crisis at the southern border is not their fault, they are simultaneously flying unvetted illegal aliens into Florida by the hundreds of thousands as part of a program they themselves created,” said Will Hampson, a spokesman for Scott’s Senate campaign

In response, Democrats have pushed back, blaming Republicans for failing to collaborate on border security legislation earlier in the year The proposed bipartisan bill aimed to overhaul the asylum system, providing faster and tougher enforcement measures while addressing the influx of migrants at the border

However, it faced opposition from top House Republicans, stalling efforts to address the ongoing immigration challenges

“Scott had the opportunity to come to the table and work on this bill in December alongside Republicans and Democrats, and he refused,” wrote Mucarsel-Powell “Instead, he spent months opposing the compromise before the deal was even finalized ”

Trinidad and Tobago divided over CCJ Membership

Trinidad and Tobago finds itself at a crossroads regarding its membership in the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), with divergent views among legal experts and politicians

Despite being the seat of the CCJ, the country remains hesitant about fully embracing the court

The CCJ, established in 2001, was envisioned to replace the London-based Privy Council as the apex court for Caribbean nations

However, only Barbados, Belize, Dominica, and Guyana have fully adopted it, while others, including Trinidad and Tobago, maintain a

limited engagement, confining themselves to the Original Jurisdiction

In the wake of the passing of Michael de la Bastide, the inaugural president of the CCJ, tributes poured in, underscoring his significant role in the region’s legal landscape

Attorney General Reginald Armour lauded de la Bastide’s contributions and urged Trinidad and Tobago to fulfill his vision by embracing the CCJ

However, not all voices support immediate integration into the CCJ

Saira Lakhan, President of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers, advocates for a referendum

on the matter Lakhan emphasizes the importance of public opinion, suggesting that rushing the transition from the Privy Council to the CCJ might overlook the benefits of the former Lakhan highlights the need to address shortcomings in the local judicial system before prioritizing CCJ membership

She argues that focusing on improving accessibility and efficiency in local courts is paramount, particularly for marginalized communities

The House of Assembly in the Bahamas recently passed long-awaited anti-gang legislation aimed at curbing gang-related activities in the country

The legislation, known as the AntiGang Bill 2024, introduces stringent measures, including severe penalties for individuals involved in gang activities

Under the bill, a “gang” is defined as a group of three or more people, formally or informally organized, who engage in various criminal activities either individually or collectively

Gang-related activities encompass a wide range of offenses, from recruiting individuals into gangs to retaliatory violence, kidnapping, threats, and benefiting from gang operations

The bill outlines significant penalties for individuals found guilty of gang

involvement

Gang leaders or members can face imprisonment for up to 25 years

Moreover, those who commit offenses as gang leaders or members, as well as those who coerce others into joining gangs, could be sentenced to seven years in prison

The Anti-Gang Bill 2024 grants expanded powers to law enforcement agencies For instance, the Minister of National Security can apply to the Supreme Court to declare a group of people as a gang if there are reasonable grounds to believe they are engaged in gang activities

Additionally, police officers have the authority to arrest individuals suspected of gang involvement without a warrant if there is reasonable cause

Individuals affected by decisions

under the new legislation have the right to appeal to the Court of Appeal within 21 days

Furthermore, the bill allows for the forfeiture of gang-related property and assets, including those benefiting from such activities

Addressing the ongoing issue of gang violence

The passing of the Anti-Gang Bill 2024 comes amid a pressing need to address gang violence in the Bahamas

The country has witnessed 37 homicides so far this year, with several incidents linked to gang retaliation

Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis had pledged to introduce the toughest anti-gang legislation ever, emphasizing the government’s commitment to combating gang-related crimes

Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar expressed intent to transition all criminal appeals to the CCJ but faced obstacles during her tenure

Her successor, Dr Keith Rowley, criticized the delay in embracing the CCJ, citing Trinidad and Tobago’s unique position as the host nation

Trinidad and Tobago’s path to full CCJ membership is laden with political and procedural hurdles

With the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) holding a slight majority in Parliament, securing the necessary votes for constitutional amendments remains uncertain

Fix the diaspora fromA7

groups publicly challenged the Jamaican government like this group planning the parallel diaspora conference

Some people believe it would be more effective for the new protest group to attend the Jamaican conference and aggressively express its concerns, rather than hosting a parallel conference

Despite the existence of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council, that body is rather irrelevant to the diaspora

When elections are held to elect members of the council from different regions in the diaspora, the votes cast are abysmally low

Very few of the council members elected in the past decade have accomplished much in representing the diaspora Most seem more interested in their selfaggrandizement than the diaspora's interest

It will be interesting to see how the current impasse plays out, but it has been a long time coming As was commented at the initial 2004 Jamaican diaspora conference, and suggested repeatedly by others in the diaspora, steps should have been taken since 2004 to form an autonomous Jamaican Diaspora organization The Jamaican government should not be leading the diaspora

The situation went bad from the beginning (mawning), and may be too late to be corrected now (eveling)

Broward County Transit’s Project Homeless Connect addressing homelessness in the county Community

In the ongoing battle against homelessness, Broward County Transit (BCT) is stepping up with a compassionate and comprehensive strategy to address the countywide issue

Recognizing the need to support individuals experiencing homelessness while ensuring the safety of passengers, BCT has collaborated with various agencies to launch Project Homeless Connect

“At BCT, we are committed to both supporting our riders and fostering a safe and secure environment,” says Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/General Manager, Broward County Transportation “Project Homeless Connect exemplifies this commitment through collaboration with Broward County Agencies, Law Enforcement, and community organizations ”

Since November 2023, BCT has joined forces with the Broward County Human Services Division of Housing Options, Solutions, and Support (HOSS-D) team and other community partners to address homelessness at bus terminals, stops, and specific routes

A specialized team of street outreach workers, including a licensed clinical practitioner, engages with individuals, assesses their needs, and provides referrals for shelter and housing Through this collaborative effort, over 324 individuals

experiencing homelessness who frequently use public transportation have been identified, with essential services such as shelter placements, case management, mental health resources, and legal assistance provided

Project Homeless Connect at the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Terminal has been a success, since launching on February 20, 2024, and has yielded positive results:

• 19 individuals sheltered

• 20 individuals connected with addiction recovery services at the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC)

• One person received medical care

• Another individual was reunited with their family

In addition to these direct interventions, the project has enhanced the transit center environment by compassionately storing individuals’ belongings and implementing improvements like deep cleaning, upgraded lighting, and enhanced customer amenities

A remarkable story emerged during a February 24 outreach event, where a woman, at her lowest point, battling addiction, found hope Initially hesitant, witnessing the support around her inspired her to seek help Now, 49 days sober, she thrives in residential treatment

“We view this initial effort as a huge success, ” says Cuff Lonergan, “ we will continue to monitor activities at our Broward Central Terminal location and provide similar services as necessary with our shelterless support partners ”

In the coming months, Broward County Transit, alongside homeless outreach partners, plans to expand outreach to additional locations including the Northeast Transit Center in Pompano Beach, FL, the Lauderhill Transit Center in Lauderhill, Florida, and the West Terminal in Plantation, FL

The apology was accompanied by a pledge to give parcels of land it had received from those who profited from slavery to the most vulnerable people in Jamaica and The Cayman Islands

During an ecumenical service on Sunday at the Webster Memorial Church in St Andrew, Jamaica, the UK church group acknowledged the harrowing legacy of slavery — that subjected millions of men, women and children to backbreaking labor, violence, and dehumanization — and expressed regret for the actions of their ancestors

The apology was read by Rev Tessa Robinson, moderator of The United Reformed Church UK and accepted by Rev Gary Harriott, moderator of The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands

Robinson said that the apology is rooted in the gospel that calls on sinners to repent of what has been done in the past and to be reconciled

“We, the general assembly of The United Reformed Church, mindful of our own history and that of our antecedent bodies, apologize for our role in transatlantic slavery and the scars that continue to blight our society, our church, and the lives of black people in our midst and around the globe today We have heard the pain of sisters and brothers who have been hurt and are still being hurt by these legacies, including the continuing scourge of racism,” the apology read

The United Reformed Church, formed in 1972 through the amalgamation of various denominations across England, Scotland, and Wales, acknowledged its complicity in the transatlantic slave trade, highlighting the financial benefits it received from donations linked to slavery

In its apology the church acknowledged its “share in and benefit from our nation's participation and that of some of our own antecedent bodies in transatlantic slavery”

It further made a commitment to find constructive ways to move from saying 'I'm sorry' into concrete actions of repairing justice

Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange accepted the apology but said that the government of Jamaica would continue to pursue reparations

“It is not enough that the enslavers and their descendants should regret the suffering that slavery inflicted on our ancestors When you have done something wrong, you must take responsibility for it, apologize and try to set things right,” Minister Grange, who attended the church service, said

Rev Harriott reiterated The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands' commitment to supporting the most vulnerable by offering parcels of land, adding that “landlessness has significantly hindered formerly enslaved people in their drive towards generational creation ”

This apology follows similar gestures by other institutions, including the Church of England, which apologized last year for its historical ties to slavery

The apology followed the revelation that the organization benefited from donations from a fund dating back to Queen Anne in 1704 intended to help the poorest clergy The fund was invested in the South Sea Company, which traded in African slaves

The organization also pledged to support communities affected by slavery with a £100-million (US$127 million) investment over nine years However, experts advising the church on the initiative have recommended a new target of £1 billion

According to a report launched at The University of the West Indies, Mona, last year June, England owes the descendants of the enslaved in 31 countries in the Caribbean, Central America and North America US$24 trillion, of which US$9 5 trillion is said to be owed to Jamaica

Can Cannabis Help or Harm Heart Health?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and Florida According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the African American community is the hardest hit among racial groups The causes of heart disease are well-known — smoking, excessive alcohol use, obesity, diabetes, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity — so preventing it has a lot to do with individual lifestyle choices, including the use of cannabis

The growing normalization of recreational and medical marijuana across the country has prompted increasing concern about how cannabis affects heart health, especially when it is smoked or inhaled Two Florida healthcare professionals who share that concern are Drs Shamarial Roberson and Kyron Tamar

Dr Roberson's areas of expertise include epidemiology, chronic disease, infectious disease, and emergency response She formerly held the position of Deputy Health Secretary for the Florida Department of Health, the department that includes the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) Dr Tamar is a retired board-certified surgeon who spent nearly 39 years in public and private practice Since becoming a medical marijuana-qualified physician in Florida, he has seen more than 8,000 patients

While the OMMU does not list heart disease as a qualifying condition that is treatable with medical cannabis, Dr Tamar says people suffering from the ailment often struggle with other health issues that qualify for treatment He mentions chronic conditions, such as pain, anxiety, insomnia, and depression, as qualifying illnesses stemming from heart disease

“The National Institutes of Health has a study that stated oxidative stress is what causes all diseases as we age Cannabis is an antioxidant, [it] restores [oxidative] balance, so it's going to help with heart disease,” says Dr Tamar Low-THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) medical

cannabis and/or cannabidiol (CBD) can help calm excitable emotions that quickly increase heart rates, reduce pain, and induce a more restful sleep, resulting in improved heart health, he explains, adding “sleep is the most important part of wellness because we rest, repair, renew, and regenerate ”

But administering medical cannabis or CBD to patients with an underlying condition of heart disease takes great care, he cautions Inhaling cannabis, whether through smoking or vaping, is out, Dr Tamar says, because that delivery method deprives the heart of oxygen, makes it work harder, causes blood pressure to rise, and damages the lungs

He often recommends long-lasting skin patches, balms, gummies, tinctures, or gel caps as more suitable treatment options But he cautions, “ you have to pay so much attention to dosing ratios because low-THC protects the

heart, high-THC hurts the heart But some people have protection with the higher doses of the low-THC ”

Dr Roberson advocates for a healthy lifestyle as the best approach to preventing or combating heart disease Exercise, weight control, avoiding tobacco, and eating fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, while “making sure your mental health is together” help protect heart health and are essential to maintaining a healthy heart, she says

She encourages people with health insurance “to make sure you ' re seeing your primary health care provider on a regular basis to get screenings, to make sure your hypertension is controlled If you have high blood pressure, make sure you ' re looking at your cholesterol to ensure your levels are right, make sure that you're checking your A1C and watching for pre-diabetes,” she explained

For the uninsured, Dr Roberson says federally qualified healthcare centers, which are located in communities across Florida, are good resources for low- to no-cost treatments of high blood pressure and diabetes She also says an initiative sponsored by the Florida Department of Health, Heart Health Plus, partners with health departments in counties experiencing a disproportionate level of heart disease and related risk factors Currently offered in 15 counties, Heart Health Plus provides blood pressure self-monitoring programs and seeks to increase referrals to additional selfmanagement and healthy behavior support services, such as diabetes prevention programs, diabetes self-management education and support, and the Quit Your Way services of Tobacco Free Florida

Both doctors warn against using unregulated cannabis and CBD, including illicit weed and Delta-8 and Delta-9 gummies “They don't know what they're getting, and it could be very dangerous,” Dr Roberson says, referring to people who buy recreational marijuana illegally or those who buy CBD products in convenience stores

They also are in strong agreement that studies on cannabis' effect on heart health have led to questionable findings “A lot of the studies, they were not conducted for medical marijuana products in itself,” says Dr Roberson

Dr Tamar calls for the federal government to delist marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, saying, “Removing it will allow the research to show us the benefits of cannabis in treating heart disease because there's no debate that cannabis can lower LDL (low-density lipoproteins) ” High levels of LDL, commonly called “bad cholesterol,” increase the risk of heart attack and stroke
